“THE kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out at dawn to hire laborers for his vineyard.” (Mt 20,1) Thus starts the gospel we heard recently at Mass. It’s a parable that contains a precious lesson—a warning, in fact—especially to those who feel advantaged and privi-leged in life for a number of reasons.

As the parable continues its story, the landowner agreed to pay the laborers who were hired at the first hour the “usual daily wage.” But since he noticed there were still idle people in the different parts of the day, even at the last hour, he decided to hire them just the same, promising to pay them what he thought would be just.

At the end of the day, when paying time came, he chose to pay all his laborers the same “usual daily wage,” including those who were hired at the last hour. Obvious-ly, those hired at the first hour felt unfairly treated.

“These last ones worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who bore the day’s burden and the heat,” they said. But to this, the landowner said, “My friend, I am not cheating you. Did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what is yours and go…”

The parable simply tells us at bottom that God cares for everyone of us. He does not make distinction of per-sons insofar as loving is concerned. His love is universal. It covers all.

This is the thought that should be with us everytime we see the differences and the great variety of conditions we have among ourselves. Yes, we have to acknowledge our differences, our advantages and disadvantages, etc., but we should not forget that God loves all of us and that we too should love everybody else the way God loves all.

Let us remind ourselves that our differences are meant to develop, if not enrich, everyone through the dynamics of complementation and supplementation. Let’s see to it that we are not unduly entangled with the unavoidable tension and conflict, and that we manage to go past them and see the bigger picture.

What is incumbent on us is to give what we have, what has been entrusted to us by God—our talents and other gifts—as much as we could for the common good. This is where our true joy and self-fulfillment. It’s in giving that we truly love, and that we truly get blessed.

We should never think that our talents, gifts, blessings and other privileges and advantages we can have in life are a right to lord it over others, or to be proud and vain, or to expect more privileges. They are never meant to make us feel superior to others, turning us into conceited persons.

If ever, these things should only make us more aware of the greater responsibility we have to contribute to the common good. That consideration, which we should try to be with us always, should sober us and stop us from making fantastic, baseless ideas of ourselves.

These gifts and blessings should make us more hum-ble and more responsible, as well as more discerning as to what God has in mind for their proper use. That’s because when not referred to God, these things can have no other effect than to spoil us.

And that’s when we, unwittingly perhaps, lead our-selves down the road to a blinding self-righteousness. We have to be most wary of this danger which is very com-mon and can come to us in subtle ways.

The worst form is when we use our “sanctity” because we may be a priest, a nun or a monk, as a claim to superi-ority over others. This can happen when we have little or even no patience for those who may not behave “proper-ly” in certain liturgical celebrations and we feel we have the right to scold them in public.

The real saints and heroes never thought it beneath them to suffer the inadequacies and the mistakes of oth-ers, following the example of Christ who even went to the extent of washing the feet of his apostles, and who clearly

said that he came to serve and not to be served.Since any authority on earth is a participation of the

authority of God, those who have it, especially the sacred ministers, should see to it that the exercise of their au-thority would make others see God instead of their own selves.

We have to follow the example of St. John the Baptist who said, “He must increase, but I must decrease.”

shattered for good if nothing effec-tive and credible moves be made to enhance his image and change the seeming ugly perceptions about his credibility now before the start of the 2016 presidential campaign.

The alleged graft and corruption charges hurled at him in the past few months that regularly appear in print, seen and heard in broadcast channels nationwide have somehow eroded his once-upon-a time high credibility as a person and as a mod-el public servant.

His address to the nation last Sept. 18 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) purport-edly to explain, defend and justify the alleged overpricing of the mod-ern parking lots in Makati that were constructed during his incumbency as mayor of Makati, was not con-vincing.

However, it is too early to predict that the Vice President is already a goner in his presidential bid. It is still a year and a half before the 2016

elections and many developments relative to this issue will still surface that could change the present per-ceptions of the Filipino people about the Vice President.

Besides it appears that, while there are already several presiden-tial dreamers and hopefuls who have albeit clandestinely expressed a de-sire to become head of state, they still have to create a strong and con-vincing massive impact of accep-tance from our people at this point in time.

It is still a wait and see stance on whom among them will eventually capture the imagination of Filipino electorates to vote for on Election Day.

However, Vice President Jejomar Binay must appear before the blue ribbon committee to answer ques-tions about this graft and corruption issue leveled at him to clear his name and put the issue at rest.

board of elections inspectors as the winner based on the strength of the votes he garnered, 3,945, as against Acol’s 3,857 votes or a difference of 88 votes.

Acol, a businesswoman, said that she tried to get inside the municipal hall last July 23 but failed to do so as the building’s entrance was locked with dump trucks placed just outside the front of the building.

Upon the advice of her lawyers, she rented a pri-vate place where she holds office as mayor of the town, Acol said.

Acol said that while she is supposed to hold office in just over a year before the conduct of the 2016 elec-tions, she still want to discharge the functions as may-or so she could serve her people. (LIZBETH ANN A. ABELLA)

that the Tacloban airport had nine flights per day with an average airline seats per plane of about 70. “That means we lost 79% of our airline seat capacity,” she said.

Based on their tourist target for this year, 2,109 tourists are to arrive a day in the region using the DZR Airport. Assuming that 80% or 1,687 visitors arrival via Tacloban Air-port, the region will have a significant gap between visitor air seat demand and supply, Tiopes said.

“Presuming that of the 630 passengers from nine flights per day, 80% or 504 of them are visitors, then we are losing about 1,183 tourists per day,” she ob-served.

For 60-room Hotel Ale-jandro, the situation since early September has been unusual.

BORONGAN CITY, - Provincial environment and natural resources officer Arturo Salazar warned against burning of garbage in one’s backyard or open burning, locally known as “pagtap-ong,” as it is one of the causes of global warming and climate change.

Salazar said this during the Kapihan Para sa Ka-likasan, a radio program of the Philippine Informa-tion Agency and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources aired over Radyo ng Bayan Boron-gan-DYES on Friday, September 26.

He also added that aside from effects on the environ-ment, burning garbage is also against the law.

The Ecological Solid Waste Management Act or RA 9003 prohibits open burning.

cancellations,” said Nellie Abiertas, front desk officer of Hotel Alejandro.

The airport was shut-down on September 3 for emergency patching of large pothole, as recom-mended by airline compa-nies. After 24 hours, the runway has reopened, but only for propeller driven aircraft to give way to long term repair.

The situation prompted airline companies to cancel flights to DZR Airport.

Only the Manila-bound Philippine Airlines tur-boprop planes and Ce-bu-bound Cebu Pacific’s small aircraft use the air-port.

The DZR Airport has 2,100-meter runway. Un-like Airbuses, smaller air-crafts can only use half of the runway, paving the way for the massive rehabili-tation of runway’s asphalt overlay.

Civil Aviation Au-thority of the Philippines (CAAP) Tacloban area manager Efren Nagrama said that massive runway

rehabilitation works may end early December.

The DZR Airport is one of the country’s busiest air-ports in the country, cater-ing 611,397 inbound and outbound travellers from January to July 2014.

The CAAP office has no available comparable 2013 data since all records were swept away by big waves.

Tiopes, on the other hand, said that the limit-ed operation will contrib-ute to sustainable tourism growth in the future as it will ensure “long term safety.”

“If we were to weigh the effect of having an airport with limited operations versus ensuring the safety of passengers and the in-tegrity of the aircraft, latter takes precedence. We just have to bear the short term inconvenience,” she added.

DENR warns against open burning

RA 8749 or the Clean Air Act also bans burning of garbage because the process leads to “poisonous and toxic” fumes as well as greenhouse gases which cause global warming.

He explained that when garbage is burned, it not only contributes to air pollution. It will, in the long run contribute to global warming and ultimately cli-mate change.

Salazar emphasized the importance of waste seg-regation and proper waste disposal in mitigating the effects of climate change.

Also, he reiterated the other ways of protecting the environment like conserving energy and planting trees. (PIA8- ESamar)

TACLOBAN CITY-The Department of Agriculture (DA-8) is now monitoring the rice areas in the region in anticipa-tion of the El Nino phenomenon.

“Nearly half of the region’s 169,502 hectares of rice ar-eas that most of them are in Samar areas are endangered to drought during an El Nino phenomenon,” said Elvira Torres, DA regional technical director for research and regulation.

Its priority is the 81,096.79 hectares of rain fed rice areas that are sensitive to unfavorable impact of a dry season.

The rice farmers are encouraged to use the diversified rice farming and to adopt an effective water management approach as a way to lessen the impact of the phenomenon.

DA readies for possible impact of El Niño to farmers in the region

The Department of Science and Technology had earlier announced that El Niño phenomenon may start affecting the Philippines in June and peak by end-2014.

Among the 44 provinces in the country projected to be hit by the weather phenomenon, Samar was identified to be as “moderately vulnerable.”

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala had earlier an-nounced that their department has identified some interven-tions as the country braces for the El Nino phenomenon.

Among these interventions include cloud seeding and giv-ing of shallow tube wells and introduction of drought tolerant crop varieties.

The region has a total 74,143.09 hectares of irrigated areas and a total 14,263.05 hectares of upland rice areas.

The DA has its promotion of the Green Super Rice Variety for 22 pilot areas in the region. (JONA MAE ESTIL, LNU Intern)
