Mercy and compassionToo much turmoil all around war, fam-

ine, epidemic, calamity and political un-rest. Peace is apparently becoming moreand more elusive in spite of the generalintercession for peace across the globebeginning with oneself. The Ebola virusdisease, though declared by the WorldHealth Organization as treatable, is caus-ing shiver to the peoples bones. This isespecially much so that the agency itselfreported that the Ebola outbreak is out ofcontrol. For now more than 700 deathswere reported since February this year in-

cluding 60 health workers and 1,363 moredown with Ebola.

With these gures on the Ebola out-break, certain Filipinos released the ideaof mass extermination, as in the Holly-wood lm Outbreak, to contain the fur-ther spread of the dreadful disease. To theconservative mind of the God-fearing, thesuggestion is uncalled for much less out-rageous and revolting. Still, proponentsmaintain such insinuation as lesser evilthan seeing or at least knowing the pa-tients horribly enduring excruciating painand slowly dying while putting at greatrisk practically everyone around them, in-cluding the health workers. Where is mer-cy and compassion in this design?

Mercy and compassion collectively setsthe tone of Pope Francis visit in the Phil-ippines. The Holy See, seat of the RomanCatholic Church hierarchy and located inVatican City, revealed the theme of PopeFrancis visit to the Philippines that cen-

ters on these two virtues, that is A Nationof Mercy and Compassion. In a pastoralletter, the Catholic Bishops Conference ofthe Philippines, declares, Our compas-

sionate shepherd comes to show his deep

concern for our people who have gonethrough devastating calamities, especiallyin the Visayas. He comes to conrm usin our faith as we face the challenges ofwitnessing to the joy of the Gospel in themidst of our trials.

To resonate this special drift while Fili-pinos await the visit of Pope Francis, CBCPpresident urged the Catholics across thecountry to pray during the Mass, particu-larly before the post communion prayerto recite the national prayer for the papal

visit, from August 1 this year to January14 next year. While churches in the coun-try, have started the prayer, the Archdi-ocese of Palo where the Pope is said tohold a special mass, a special local prayercould possibly be recited in lieu of thenational prayer. Archdiocesan Vicar Gen-eral Rex Ramirez disclosed that the localchurch has prepared our own prayer forthe Archdiocese, which is yet to be ap-proved by Palo Archbishop John Forros-uelo Du.

Mercy and compassion is not just to becarried on in prayer but as the CBCP urgedshould be couple with acts. The prelatessaid these acts of mercy, which should bedone at least one act everyday, could in-clude giving food, to hungry beggar, visit-ing those is prison or helping the recoveryefforts for the typhoon victims. Obviously, barely thinking of killing the thousands ofpatients of the Ebola virus disease is notan act of mercy and compassion, much

more in doing it so or any lawlessnessin the society that further places the ag-grieved and deprived in greater jeopardy.

PEOPLE nowadays, especially the young ones, would reer toit as a blast rom the past. But I would not go that ar. My recentvisit to a southern town in Cebu simply made some stirrings,at once gentle and sweet, that just the same lef me completelythankul.

Te other day, I went to see a riend-priest who was just re-assigned some days ago to Argao, some 68 kilometers south oCebu City, and I elt like I stepped into the past, into things oun-dational and rudimentary. Already used to the blare and glare othe big city, I was pleasantly surprised to have a eel again o whatit was when I was kid.

Te visit reminded me o my roots, o what I consider as my

basic cultural and social beginnings, my primal identity thatsince then has acquired layers upon layers o conditionings. I im-mediately elt some sense o nostalgia crawling slowly, leisurely, into my mind and heart.

I am happy to say that such roots and beginnings, while pro-vincial and parochial in character, was open enough to accepturther and even oreign influences. I believe that my own ex-periences and my own lie itsel, as it is so ar, can attest to theveracity o this affirmation.

What I elt in Argao was a certain air o pristineness thatcertainly is not close-minded and rigid. Tere were also signs omodernity and contemporaneity. In other words, it is also flow-ing with the times, but at its own pace. Its not stuck in the past, and much less is it inert and dead. It has a lie that glows with acertain charm and aura.

I took lunch in a little restaurant, with very simple urnish-ings but with splendid yet cheap ood. It was clean, and the

servers were so simple in their ways that they had no qualms instarting a conversation with me who must have been a completestranger to them. I elt immediately at home.

I then visited the church. Its old, yes, with clear vestiges o thecolonial times, still in that baroque mould, but artully made upwith images, altar table and the ambo artully gilded and aith-ully restored.

I was happy to note that there was no sign o an imposed,out-o-place innovation made, now sadly common in many oth-er churches that would seem they were being slowly emptied otheir true character.

Tere was a uneral Mass when I went in. What I saw were or-dinary people, simply dressed and without much pretension, andall showing a piety so palpable and sincere I instantly remem-bered my past attendance at Masses in my rural town in Bohol.

Te priest who said the Mass, the riend I was visiting,deliv-

ered a homily that I thought was apt or the kind o aithul in at-tendance. It was doctrinal and exhortative, with a little bombastthat I thought the people appreciated.

Finally, I was able to spend time with my priest-riend. Hehappens to be a composer and he played some o his pieces onthe machine. Tat was when I was deeply struck by something.

He actually has been giving me some CDs that contained hiscompositions. I remember I tried playing one o his songs, but Iimmediately turned it off, since my immediate reaction was thatit was out o step with the tenor o todays world.

Not so this time when I was with him and in a place like

    Despite of Yolandas impact

    - Te gross regional domestic product (GRDP) o theregion grew by 5.7% in 2013 largely due to better peror-mance o manuacturing industries, offsetting economiclosses rom supertyphoon Yolanda.

GRDP measures the value o goods and services pro-duced by a region. Te GRPD o all regions sums up to thegross domestic product o a country.

Te regional economy rebounded rom a 6.4% drop in2012 to a 5.7% growth in 2013, contributing 2.2% to lastyears national economy.

Evangeline Paran, regional head o the Philippine Sta-tistics Authority-National Statistical Coordination Board, said Eastern Visayas is the eleventh astest growing regionlast year, but lowest in terms o growth compare to Centraland Western Visayas regions.

    Te industry sector, with a share o 41.1% to the GRDP,posted a 14.1% growth, a significant rebound rom 18.8%

decline in 2012. Tis was due to the strong perormance inthe manuacture o basic metals.

Te brisk perormance was a result o resumption ooperation o the Philippine Associated Smelting and Refin-ing (PASAR) Corporation. A total o $670 million exportrevenue was recorded rom the Leyte Industrial Develop-ment Estate, accounting to almost 75% o the regions totalexport earnings, said National Economic and Develop-ment Authority Regional Director Boniacio Uy.

year. However, construction subsector only expanded 9.2%

in 2013, lower than 29% a year ago. Contributing to the de-cline was the stricter rules imposed on real estate lendingand the tightening o mass housing incentives by the Boardo Investments.

Likewise, the big drop in the total value o new con-structions rom approved building permits rom third tothe ourth quarter o the year dragged the subsector gains.Tis was mainly a repercussion o supertyphoon Yolanda, which prevented the construction o buildings during thisperiod, Uy explained.

In contrast, other key industries registered contractionlast year. Te services industry, which contributed 38.9% tothe regions production, dipped rom 7.3% in 2012 to 4.5%in 2013.

Te drop in the services sector was largely contributed

by 18.4% decrease in real estate and business activities dueto the large decline in the number o dwelling units thatwere damaged by last years super typhoon, Paran said.

Uy explained that decline in the services sector couldhave been higher had there been no financial intermedia-tion activities, which consist o borrowing rom banks andremittances rom abroad or typhoon victims. Tese activi-ties posted an accelerated growth o 14.6% in 2013.

Agriculture contracted by 6.6% in 2013 rom last years3%. (SARWELL Q.MENIANO)
