Teacher checklist
Location – Field of Mars Reserve, western side of Pittwater Road, East Ryde. Bus access - give supplied access information to driver. No bus entry into Field of Mars Reserve. Cost - DOE $16.00 per student, no GST. Non Gov School Cost: $26 per student (GST free, minimum charge $550) Bring - essential items only: medications, food, water, sunblock, hat and raincoat in a small backpack. Teddy or soft toy – students need to bring their own teddy or soft toy. Clothing - sports uniform. No mufti. Hats and sturdy closed shoes essential for all visitors. Staffing - classroom teachers will be involved in all activities including rugged bushwalking. Parent helpers - are essential for the smooth running of the teddy bears’ picnic. We recommend a minimum of two parent helpers per class. Please pass on the attached information note to your allocated parent helpers. No preschoolers. Name tags - students need to be placed into even groups of about 6. Give each group a red or yellow animal name tag attached. There needs to be the same number of red and yellow animal groups. Name tags need to be pinned on and visible. Extreme or wet weather - may result in the excursion being modified, postponed or cancelled. This includes days predicted to be above 35ºC, high winds, extreme bush fire danger and dust storms. Ph: 98161298 Cancellations - less than two weeks notice $100. This does not apply to cancellations due to weather. Medical or special needs - please notify staff.
Limited bin access - all student waste will be taken home by students so ‘nude food’ containers are encouraged. Student welfare - students will be outdoors most of the day walking along rugged terrain. It may not be suitable for students who have been recently unwell. Pre excursion activity - read the attached letter from Edward, Chief Teddy, to the students.
Learning activities
Earth walk The focus of the bushwalk is to immerse the students in nature and develop sensory awareness of the bushland environment. Students will explore the features, colours and sounds of the bush through sensory activities such as touching textures, listening to bird calls, matching colours and smelling ‘whiff tea’.
Teddy bear tag This game reinforces the needs of life: Plants for food, Air, Water, Shelter. Through a game of ‘tag’ each ‘bear’ or pair of ‘bear brothers/sisters’ collects four students wearing badges, one of each P-A-W-S, so that they have all the needs of life.
Musical trees This game reinforces the importance of trees in providing the needs of life. Students as ‘bears’ dance around and when the music stops every bear goes to a ‘tree’. ‘Chainsaw Charlie’ sneakily cuts down trees until the bears stop him. The students explain the importance of trees and replant those cut down.
Teddy bears’ picnic Groups, with an adult, will follow clues leading them on a trail to discover what the teddies need to survive in the bush. The route will lead them to surprise picnic lunch spot under the trees.
The old forest story The students will be told a story about a forest that is cleared. Students suggest actions that could be taken to provide for the animals’ needs of life.
Create a forest Working in groups, students use natural materials and plastic animals to create a model habitat for Australian animals. (This activity may be omitted if time is short.)
