CC.1.4.2.L Demonstrate a grade appropriate command of the conventions of standard English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Capitalize proper nouns. Use commas and apostrophes appropriately. Spell words on common spelling patterns. Consult reference material as needed.

Materials= three copies of the song, “The Contraction Song”(Wilson,1988), A paper that lists all the contractions

Procedure:

1) I’ll begin by asking the students what they know about contractions. This will help me know how much I need to explain about contractions.

2) I’ll explain why we use contractions. I’ll tell the students that they are a “shorter form of 2 words” and they are especially helpful when speaking and are also helpful in writing

3) I’ll explain the rules of contractions by the words of the song: a) I’m the first word; don’t change me.” B) “When you change the second word, a shorter word you’ll see. C) Certain letters “Certain letters are taken out.... one word will remain.”

4) 4) I’ll provide them with a paper that lists all the various kinds of contractions there are. 5) I’ll explain that I have a “neat song” which is FUN and explains the “rules of contractions.”6) I’ll introduce the song, explaining that the tune is sung to a song that they already know (“Mary had a little lamb”) and after singing the first verse once, invite the students to sing along!7) I’ll ask questions like, “Does the first word ever change?” No!8) Then I’ll sing the rest of the song several times emphasizing to the students to listen

for “the rules.”

Evaluation: Now I’ll have the students write at least 6 contractions they like on a colored paper to hang in their house.

Note: I’ll gives each student a copy of “The Contraction Song” to practice at home. Rationale for including music: Besides the obvious (teaching the rules of contractions), this song will help students easily remember how to do contractions, of all that learning can be fun!

Lesson#2

Grade level=Second Grade

Subject=English

English Language proficiency levels=2.5-3.0

Vocabulary words= contraction, apostrophe, shortcut

Objectives= 1) Students will review what contractions are

Page 3: eslportfoliobyvirginia.weebly.com · Web viewDon’t change me, don’t change me.I’m the first word, don’t change me!Please just let me be2. When you change the second word,

2) Students will understand that when “doing contractions,” you don’t change the “first word.”

3) Students will learn that it’s the “second word” that is changed.

4) They will learn about the affirmative contraction words with will and is.

PA academic standards= CC.1.4.2.L Demonstrate a grade appropriate command of the conventions of standard English grammar, usage, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. Capitalize proper nouns. Use commas and apostrophes appropriately. Spell words on common spelling patterns. Consult reference material as needed

Materials= computer to show power point, pencils, worksheets

Procedure:

1) I’ll begin by asking the students what they remember about contractions. This will help me know if remember what was taught from the previous lesson.

2) I’ll show a power point that explains why we use contractions (to use a shortcut). I’ll tell the students that they are a “shorter form of 2 words” and they are especially helpful when speaking and are also helpful in writing. The power point will show and explain how an apostrophe takes the place of the missing letters.

3) Our first example in the power point that will be given is contractions with will. Many contractions are formed with pronouns and the verb will. An apostrophe (‘) takes the place of the letters wi in will.

4) An example of the contraction in a sentence will be shown.5) I’ll show other contraction words with will.6) I’ll introduce in the power point contractions with the word is, am then are. Sentences with these contractions will be shown.

7) Students will complete a paper called butterfly contractions. Each wing of the butterfly will have a word and in the middle below the butterfly they will choose from a list of contraction words. They will pick the correct contraction word and glue it below the butterfly.

8) We will sing the contraction song for fun.

Evaluation:

1) I will orally ask the students to give me sentences made with the contractions taken from the lesson. I will write them down.

2) The power point has a quiz that gives sentences with the two words .There are then four sentences to choose from with sentences that contain contractions. The students will choose in multiple choice form the correct answer. The contractions they’ll use are is, are and am. They will receive a lesson #2 quiz the next day. They will have to write the contractions for two words given based from affirmative words we learned the previous day. I will use this to see if I need to reteach anything.

3) I’ll show the power point again that explains why we use contractions etc….. Everything from the previous day taught will be shown of the affirmative contractions. I will show the negative contractions now. I will look at the handout given from day one with all the negative contractions listed.

4) I will give a sentence with a negative contraction as an example. The students will then be asked orally to give me some examples of sentences with negative contractions.

5) Students will complete a paper called butterfly contractions. Each wing of the butterfly will have a word and in the middle below the butterfly they will choose from a list of contraction words. They will pick the correct contraction word and glue it below the butterfly. They will do this with the contractions words for would and various negative contraction

words.

6) Students will complete a bumble bee contraction page which is completed in the same way as the butterfly contraction page. The words given will be ones given as a review from previous lessons like the word is. 7) Then I’ll give students a paper to complete where they will have to choose the correct negative contraction to fill in the blanks of a sentence.

Evaluation:

1) I will orally ask the students to give me sentences made from the words taken from the lesson today. I will write them down. I will ask them to remember the contraction for will not since the spelling changes.

2) They will receive a lesson #3 quiz the next day. They will have to write the correct affirmative contractions in the blanks for sentences given. Then they will be given sentences with two words that make a negative. They will have to write a negative contraction to replace the two words given. The first part of the quiz will be like a review and the second part will be based off of the new negative contractions learned.

Teacher Instructional Recommendations

1) The students need books for extra help in classes to be available to take home.

2) They should keep a dictionary they make with new words they learn every day.

3) The students would benefit from having an afterschool club where they learn English and do activities with other American children.

Parent Recommendations

1) The students should practice reading from books with help from their older sister or brother every day.

2) The students can practice and review what we learned together with the flash cards I gave them and play the contraction Bingo game as well as practice the song I gave them.

3) The parents may want to learn English at the school since this would not only help them have greater opportunities but also help them inspire and converse with their own children in English. Concord Elementary has English classes offered for parents once a week.

Section #10 Reflection

1) Language- I have learned that the English language is much more complex and hard to learn then Spanish. I was teaching my students about contractions and there were many times that I myself forgot what to do or forgot how to write something correctly. I found that I had to tell my students that you just have to memorize certain things like the contraction for will not is won’t. Some things can be confusing like the contraction for he’s can stand for he is or he has.

2) Culture- I learned that people from different cultures are a lot of fun to be with and they want to learn about new things. However they may lack the means or support to get involved in doing cultural learning experiences. For instance the family I worked with did not go to the movies or get out much because they have no car. The parents whose first language is Spanish also did not actively engage in many cultural learning activities because they did not have a group of friends or family to go to events with. For this reason I took them all to the movies to see Big Hero #6. They all loved it and really appreciated the gesture. I plan on inviting them to more cultural events.

3) Observing, planning, implementing and managing instruction- I learned that a concept or subject like contractions can take a several lessons, days, and weeks to learn. I learned that in order to make learning engaging and interesting for children

Page 10: eslportfoliobyvirginia.weebly.com · Web viewDon’t change me, don’t change me.I’m the first word, don’t change me!Please just let me be2. When you change the second word,

it is fun to incorporate games, songs, food, crafts, and prizes the lessons.

4) Assessment- I learned that you can gage learning in many ways other than written tests, or quizzes. When my students sang the contraction song or answered questions orally I could tell they were learning and doing do without any stress.

5) Professionalism- I learned that even when you work outside of school to teach you must always be professional including how you dress, talk, and behave.
