Into the Woods
About Into the WoodsThe Woods here are those of Mallarme’s faun in Debussy’s Afternoon of a Faun, and Debussy and the faun make an appearance towards the end of the piece. But at the beginning there is no hint of this; the dark green (to me) of Debussy’smasterpiece begins to appear about midway – hence this piece is a journey into themagical Woods of Debussy’s youth. (The piece has often been performed with adancer, which heightens this experience.)dancer, which heightens this experience.)
The sounds on the tape are all digital modifications of samples provided by mycolleague at the University of Maryland, Professor William Montgomery, whopremiered the piece. The sounds of Debussy towards the end were provided bymy Kurzweil synthesizer.
Into the Woods is available on Unseen Leaves (EMF CD 045)
