Where did it come from so fast? No major holidays are in August, but many personal ones are taken as people travel before schools resume. The origins of August date back many centuries. The Roman calendar used to have only 10 months on it since they liked to keep track of things by tens. Many of the months got their name from when they appeared on the calendar. For instance, December was so called because it was originally the tenth month. Then two extra months were added to the calendar it never got renamed. Hundreds of years later Julius Caesar began tweaking the Roman calendar a lile and the seventh, which was called the fiſthmonth, got renamed July for Julius. His successor Octavian, beer known as Caesar Augustus, completed the work and the eighth month called the sixthmonth was renamed in his honor because thats the month he became Counsel of Rome. July and August are the only months named for people who actually lived. Prey swiſt way to have your name immortalized throughout human history, just have it printed every year on a calendar. Statues can be melted down or crushed, and plaques can be replaced, but you cant rename a month every me theres a new emperor. Also, since some of the months are named for the gods (like Janus, Mars, and Juno) you get your name elevated to a nice immortal spot. The New Testament scriptures refer to Caesar several mes and for the me of Jesus ministry it would have been Tiberius. Other Caesar references depend on when the wring occurred, but Caesar Augustus is the only one menoned by name. (cont.) . In Lukes gospel we hear his name called out as the one who issued a decree for a census that makes Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. It is quite possible that Luke was playing nice and wanted to make clear that the Kingdom of God was not a replacement for the Roman Empire. The Pax Roma, or peace of Rome, that was established by the reign of Caesar Augustus was not threatened. Historians credit Pax Roma for lasng two hundred years. We know the difference is the Kingdom of God endures forever, the Peace of Christ passes all understanding and we will not need a calendar to measure the span of eternity. Our names are wrien for all eternity even if they are forgoen by history. Grace and Peace, Pastor Warren

Dear Friends of Marion FUMC,

The month of August is upon us as July has ended.

Hundreds of years later Julius Caesar began tweaking the Roman calendar a little and the seventh, which was called the ‘fifth’ month, got renamed July for Julius. His successor Octavian, better known as Caesar Augustus, completed the work and the eighth month called the ‘sixth’ month was renamed in his honor because that’s the month he became Counsel of Rome. July and August are the only months named for people who actually lived.

Pretty swift way to have your name immortalized throughout human history, just have it printed every year on a calendar. Statues can be melted down or crushed, and plaques can be replaced, but you can’t rename a month every time there’s a new emperor. Also, since some of the months are named for the gods (like Janus, Mars, and Juno) you get your name elevated to a nice immortal spot.

The New Testament scriptures refer to Caesar several times and for the time of Jesus ministry it would have been Tiberius. Other Caesar references depend on when the writing occurred, but Caesar Augustus is the only one mentioned by name. (cont.)

. In Luke’s gospel we hear his name called out as the one who issued a decree for a census that makes Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. It is quite possible that Luke was playing nice and wanted to make clear that the Kingdom of God was not a replacement for the Roman Empire. The Pax Roma, or peace of Rome, that was established by the reign of Caesar Augustus was not threatened. Historians credit Pax Roma for lasting two hundred years.

We know the difference is the Kingdom of God endures forever, the Peace of Christ passes all understanding and we will not need a calendar to measure the span of eternity. Our names are written for all eternity even if they are forgotten by history.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Warren
