ETCS Properties & expected Benefits
• Austrian Solution– ETCS Level 1 - Infill realised with Eurobalises and Euroloop
• Optimised ETCS Level 1
– High operational performance:“The ETCS Level 1 system operating with one or two optimally positioned infill balises is
almost as efficient as a system with continuous information transmission” 1)
– Cab signalling offers differentiated speed profiles adapted to the real switch speeds of a route
– Good cost / benefit ratio
– Safety increase / SIL 4
1) Study RWTH Aachen: “Influence of automatic train control components with an infill functionality on capacity“, commissioned by UIC/2006)

Experiences
• Experiences gained on the Vienna – Budapest line ide ntified the
main issues
– Insufficient overlap situation
– Train brake model is conservative infrastructure has to react
– Need of accurate configuration management for docum ents and
ETCS data during the ETCS implementation process
F. CernyERTMS-Platform 13/10/2006 Paris
Solution implemented in Austria
• Introduction of a minimum release speed
– Justified on a risk analysis a release speed of 20km/h is introduced
– 20km/h is a practicable speed to approach a signal
– Exception possible for highest safety needs (0km/h release speed)
• New stations/interlocking projects will respect minimum overlap of 50m if possible
• Implementation of Euroloop
– Start up of trains in case of 0km/h release speed (see exception)
– Performance increase
F. CernyERTMS-Platform 13/10/2006 Paris
Conclusion
• The solution for the Austrian application ofETCS resolves the presented issues
– Infill with Eurobalises and Euroloop and
– Introduction of a release speed
– Using ETCS L1 for Cab - signalling
• achieving
– high operational benefits,
– substantial safety increase at
– reasonable implementation- and lifecycle cost.

For the mainlines (3000 – 3500 km)starting in 2007 in 5 stepsaccording to :• Austrian BFS concept (Austrian traffic control system)
• Useful lifetime of the UIC analogue radio (mostly more than 10 years over the time)
• European Corridors

Cab Radios
• ~ 600 engines are already equipped with dual mode radios ( because of border crossing locomotives to Germany) – DB SIM´s
• 6 engines additionally will be equipped with radio Test Devices
