the Principal’s Message Dear Ernest Just Middle School Community, As we prepare for the holidays and the winter season, I would like to take the opportunity to give thanks to the entire Ernest Just community. Everyone, from our staff, students, and parents to our local businesses to community civic associations and local alumni chapters of sororities and fraternities, has been very supportive of our young scholars and the work we face in preparing them not only to enter college and the workforce but also to become engaged as positive global citizens. Our students have shared this spirit of thanks and community by organizing and supporting a wonderful food drive for those in need. They have brought some great ideas to the administration with respect to recycling and ecology. Through the support and resources provided by Omega Psi Phi fraternity, our students have helped build a memorial and educational garden dedicated to Dr. Ernest Just. We have had the unique opportunity to expose some of our students to the thinking and writing of Richard Wright. These are just some of the accomplishments we have been able to achieve in a short time. We look forward to many more great things from our students and our community. We will continue to provide exciting and creative educational experiences with a focus on literacy and promoting student thought and engagement. Please enjoy the company of friends, family, and loved ones, and give thanks for the strong community we have here. Principal’s Message Dear Ernest Just Middle School Community,

As we prepare for the holidays and the winter season, I would like to take the

opportunity to give thanks to the entire Ernest Just community. Everyone,

from our staff, students, and parents to our local businesses to community civic

associations and local alumni chapters of sororities and fraternities, has been

very supportive of our young scholars and the work we face in preparing them

not only to enter college and the workforce but also to become engaged as

positive global citizens. Our students have shared this spirit of thanks and

community by organizing and supporting a wonderful food drive for those in

need. They have brought some great ideas to the administration with respect

to recycling and ecology. Through the support and resources provided by

Omega Psi Phi fraternity, our students have helped build a memorial and

educational garden dedicated to Dr. Ernest Just. We have had the unique

opportunity to expose some of our students to the thinking and writing of

Richard Wright. These are just some of the accomplishments we have been

able to achieve in a short time. We look forward to many more great things

from our students and our community. We will continue to provide exciting

and creative educational experiences with a focus on literacy and promoting

student thought and engagement. Please enjoy the company of friends,

family, and loved ones, and give thanks for the strong community we have

STEAM - Video Gaming Tournament Our students participated in a Video Gaming Tournament and Conference

sponsored by The Patriots Technology Training Center on Saturday, December

12th. They were able to interact with video game designers, test out video

games, and get to know more about the process of creating/designing video

games.

They then participated in a tournament with some of the most popular games

on the market today. A few of our students made it to the final rounds and we're

just short of winning the grand prize of $100. I was so proud of our students and

how engaged they were about learning more about technology, arts and the

science and mathematics behind the video gaming.

STEAM - Parent Night

We had our first STEAM parent night in conjunction with our other special

programs on December 9th. We gave our parents and students the opportunity

to see how we are implementing STEAM in our school this year. Stay tuned for our next parent night in the Spring!

ANATOMY AFFECTED

COMMON COLD: Caused by a virus or bacteria; normally

affects the nose, throat and upper airway.

FLU: Caused by a virus or bacteria; affects the nose, throat and

upper airway.

BRONCHITIS: Inflammation of the lining of the bronchi and the

main airways of the lungs.

PNEUMONIA: Caused by viral, bacterial or fungal infection;

can be caused by inhalation of substances such as

chemicals, water or vomit (aspiration pneumonia); inflammation of

the alveoli (air sacs) deep within the lungs.

TRANMISSION

COMMON COLD: Initial symptoms start 12 hours to 3 days after infection. The virus is easily

transmitted in airborne droplets from coughs and sneezes from infected people, even when

a handkerchief is used. It is also spread to the nose and throat by way of hand-to-hand

contact with infected individuals or by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus.

FLU: Symptoms develop 24-48 hours after infection. The virus is spread in the same manner

as the common cold.

BRONCHITIS: Initial onset is 24-48 hours after infection. Acute bronchitis is often caused by a

viral infection which spreads from the nose, throat and sinuses into the bronchus and

bronchial tree. It can become a recurrent problem for people with chronic obstructive

pulmonary disease. In older people and those with a heart or lung disorder, the infection

can spread farther into the lungs causing pneumonia.

PNEUMONIA: Bacterial pneumonia has a rapid onset and symptoms generally develop

within a few hours. It is harder for oxygen to pass across the walls of the air sacs or aveoli in

the lungs to the bloodstream because they have become inflamed with white blood cells

and fluid. Pneumonia may develop as a complication of a viral infection, such as a

common cold. Other causes of bacterial pneumonia in healthy

adults include infection with Haemophilus influenza, Mycoplasma

pneumonia, pseudomonas and klebsiella bacteria. The

bacterium known as Legionella pneumophila also known as

Legionnaires’ disease is spread through air-conditioning systems.

Staphylococcus aureus bacteria usually affects people in the

hospital with other illness, especially the very young or elderly

population.

SYMPTOMS

COLD: Mild chills and fever, body aches and mild headache; fatigue; runny or stuffy nose;

sneezing; sore throat; mucous producing cough; clear, yellow or green mucous.

FLU: Fever higher than 100 degrees F.; moderate to severe chills and body aches, extreme

fatigue and weakness, severe chest discomfort, non-productive cough.

BRONCHITIS: Irritating, persistent cough that may produce clear sputum or large amounts of

ATTENTION

Reminders Log in to schoolmax on a regular basis. Where you see 0’s, ask for an explanation from your child. Zeroes usually mean work that wasn’t done. Zeroes are disastrous to the student’s bottom line. If you don’t check, some students don’t do.

We sell agenda books for $ 3.00. Have

students write

down all their

assignments in one

place so that you

can monitor. (Yes,

children still need to

be monitored).

ERNEST EVERETT JUST NOVEMBER 2015

Ernest Everett Just Middle School’s Art program is exploratory and conceptual in nature. Children are able to explore a variety of thinking processes, art forms, materials and techniques, and sources for inspiration such as observation, memory, and imagination. Students look at, talk and write about art from different cultures and times, as well as their own art and art of peers. Students use creative, critical and design thinking processes to solve problems or challenges to make meaning of their world. The visual art elective works in tangent with many core academic areas of study in terms of themes and context to build cross-cultural connections. We are continuously expanding in terms of media and themes in each sequential course. Throughout the program, students engage in various forms of communication, utilizing a rich vocabulary and a variety of technological resources. Students continue to utilize their art knowledge, while studying career options, identifying skills required for each career, and identifying ways to utilize and support the arts community.

6th and 7th grade students visited the SciTech Learning Center where they had the opportunity to work as engineers. Their task was to design a rain garden that produced the greatest amount of fresh water.

Mrs. Brown's 7th Grade Science along with members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc, planted shrubbery behind the school. The garden can be viewed from the library, and will be used as a learning station for our students. We would like to thank the fraternity for their donation to plant the garden.
