A note from our Board

Barksdale ParkGreat communities have great parks. The Heritage Parks and Trails (HPT) committee has been working hard for the last year to upgrade and modernize Barksdale Park. Barksdale Park is located in the green space between the communities of West Fork and Moncrief.
Currently, there is a tot lot that serves kids up to 5 years old, about 1000 square feet of open space, two benches and walking trails. The park was developed and installed by Hillwood in 2001. The park has not been updated as families and residents all around have grown.
With the support of the Heritage PID Board, HPT is finalizing the plans for the future upgrades, so please review the drawings and please provide your feedback. The committee meets every month and held a meeting on Oct. 7 at Barksdale Park to get residents comments and feedback. The committee is always looking for everyone's comments, so please visit their next meeting.
Sincerely,
Neftali OrtizHeritage, Past-President

Last month, about 230 Red Cross blood drives were canceled in 23 states, resulting nearly 7,500 uncollected blood and platelet donations. With seasonal flu epidemics and inclement weather still affecting much of the country, the Red Cross needs healthy, eligible donors to make an appointment to give blood or platelets in the coming days and weeks to help maintain a sufficient supply. Rules for the Holidays
The holidays are here, and for many people, that means lots of festivities with friends and loved ones. With all of the merriment that’s sure to ensue, it’s important that residents who are hosting celebrations are not only considerate of their neighbors, but also take note of the association’s rules. A complete listing of our association rules and regulations can be found in our Declaration of Covenants, Easements and Restrictions (DCE&Rs), but here are a few key items to look up that are particularly pertinent during the holiday season:
Outdoor Decorations: Decking the halls with seasonal ornaments is a great way to bring the holiday spirit home. Many love to spread the joy by decorating the outside of their homes and front yards as well, but before you scurry up that ladder to hang the decorative lights along the side of your roof, take a quick peek at the DCE&Rs to find out the guidelines for outdoor decorations, as well as the guidelines for flags and signs if you plan on decorating with those. This will help make sure your outdoor winter wonderland isn’t an association violation. (Per Article 1, Section 1.7 (z): All exterior holiday decorations must be removed within 30 days after the holiday to which they relate.)
Parties: We hope you all have plenty of chances to eat, drink and be merry this holiday season. If you plan on hosting a large get-together or party, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind. First, keep the revelry and noise to a minimum, and wind the party down at a reasonable time—you don’t want your celebrating to interfere with DCE&Rs to find out what the association deems acceptable noise levels and what the quiet hours are, as well as guidelines for hosting parties.
Parking: The holidays bring many people together, and that means extra cars will need to be parked. To make sure your guests are covered, look at the DCE&Rs to find out the rules on visitor parking in the association. (Per Article 1, Section 1.7 (d): Visitors or guests of a resident of a Residence may park their vehicle on the street, provided, however, any such parking shall be only temporary, from day to day, and shall not exceed 48 hours in duration without the written consent of the committee.)
Overnight Guests: It wouldn’t be the holidays without Uncle Marv and Aunt Ethel bunking in little Jimmy’s room. Of course, depending on how long your overnight guests are staying, you may need to let the association know. The DCE&Rs will give you a breakdown on the rules for both short-term and long-term guests, so take a look at them before you break out the extra cost.
Following the association’s rules and regulations helps ensure that all of our residents can enjoy this special time of year, so please help us by doing your part. Stay safe and have a wonderful holiday season.
Please visit www.heritagelifehoa.com/documents to view the DCE&Rs or contact the HOA office with any questions at 817-741-1912 or [email protected].

A hot cocoa bar at your next holiday gathering can be a fun new tradition. Celebrate the season, get your friends and family together, sip some great hot cocoa and let the memories begin.
Creating and preparing a hot cocoa bar is easy. Two basic steps are involved, deciding on toppings and choosing the hot cocoa recipe. Marshmallows and whipped cream are standard toppings for hot cocoa but don’t let your imagination stop there! Your hot cocoa bar can include crushed peppermint candies, finely chopped candy bars, peanut butter
chips, cinnamon chips, butterscotch chips, white chocolate chips and thinly sliced Andes mints. Other options are pourable ice cream toppings, decorating sugars, multi-colored sprinkles, and ground cinnamon. Candy canes and cinnamon sticks are great for stirring.
Choose a hot cocoa recipe to be cooked in a slow cooker or Crock-Pot which is the easiest and most convenient way to ensure your cocoa is hot and ready for your guests to enjoy.
Here are the ingredients needed for a simple slow cooker recipe for 8 guests:• 2 cups heavy whipping cream • 7 ounces sweetened condensed milk (half a 14 oz can)• 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips• ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder • 6 cups whole milk • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract• Pinch of saltSimply combine all the ingredients in the pot and cook on low for two hours; stirring occasionally to combine milk and chocolate.
You can ladle the hot cocoa in holiday themed ceramic mugs or paper cups. Your hot cocoa bar can be unpretentious or as elaborate as you desire. No matter the decorations or the simplicity of the setting at your gathering, your friends and family will enjoy each sip of their delicious hot cocoa creations!

Go outside. A 15 minute walk outside will boost your mood and in-crease your energy level. Being outside is a good resource of vitamin D which helps support your immune system.
Opt for a protein. Most people have a tendency to choose a quick car-bohydrate such as chips, crackers or candy when feeling hungry. Try choosing a protein such as yogurt, eggs, almonds or goat cheese which can help to stabilize blood sugar levels, can improve concentration and supports muscles and bones.
Get extra sleep. Sleep is as needed as eating, drinking and breathing for whole body health. A good night sleep reduces body stress, improves your memory, and contributes to a happier disposition. During winter, the days are shorter, try going to bed a little earlier.
Eat fruit and vegetables. For overall health, eating fruits and vegetables are known to reduce risks for strokes and heart disease, protect against certain cancers, and help to lower calorie intake. Fruits and vegetables are an excellent source of vitamins and fiber and should be included in your diet year round.
Laugh. Laughter is good for your general healthiness and wellbeing. Besides making you feel better, some researchers say that one minute of laughter is like a mild workout increasing your blood pressure and pulse rate which makes you breathe faster directing oxygen to your tissues.
Laughter balances your mind and body, eases tension and helps release anger.
Tips for Staying Well This Winter

Holiday AromasNow that the holidays are here it is time to once again enjoy the holiday aromas and smells of freshly baked pies, cakes, cookies, breads, and spiced apple cider on the stove reminiscent of time with family and friends. Whether you are actually baking for the holidays or not, you can fill your home with holiday scents using candles, wax melting pots, reed diffusers, plug-ins and much more.
It is said that smells can inundate your mind with a flurry of memories almost instantaneously, influencing your mood, feelings and even work performance. A smell can transport you back to a childhood memory or feeling. Fragrance com-panies are constantly seeking to express emotions and feelings such as power, desire, vitality and relaxation in perfumes, candles, lotions and oils in order for consumers to purchase their products knowing that smell plays an important part of our psychological make-up.
Filling your home with aromas and smells of the holidays can have a profound impact on you and your family’s body and brain. Studies show that the smell of peppermint can give a burst of energy and help with concentration. The smell of chocolate may increase your memory power. The smell of cinnamon has been linked to attention processes. And the aroma of vanilla might help you feel more relaxed and happier, significantly lowering negative feelings.
During the holidays, remember to infuse your home with aromas and smells which can positively enhance memories, boost moods and create a relaxing atmo-sphere for you, your family and friends.
I hope everyone had a great time at the Fall Festival on October 21st. We had a lot of great costumes,
pumpkin painting, games and lots of fun!!
