Effective teaching and learning is well underway at Erina High School as Term 2 flies by. I was very pleased to see the positive application that year 7 and 9 made in the recent NAPLAN tests and look forward to receiving some very good results. Term 2 is always a busy term with assessment as the staff prepare the semester one reports. Thursday June 26 : 11-12 students and parents

Wednesday July 24 : 7-10 students and parents

Tuesday July 3 : 7-10 students and parents

Wednesday August 7 : 7-10 students and parents

Request for interview times will be forwarded in the semester reports

Our new year 7 2014 student advisers have been appointed. Congratulations to Sarah-Jane Bissett and Ali Bangura who have accepted these very important positions. Ms Bissett and Mr Bangura will commence visits to our partner Primary schools later this term as we commence our year 6 into 7 transition program. I was very excited today to sign off the completion of our new trade training facility for Construction. This brand new $700,000 facility funded by the Federal Government will be a fantastic addition to our School. It has industry standard machinery with plenty of space for constructing large projects in the covered outdoor workspace. The official opening of the Trade Training Centre will occur later in the year where I will extend an invitation to parents to view this fabulous new facility. I have attached some pictures for a sneak peak at what it looks like.

Erina High School has recently received a significant funding grant through the Improving Literacy and Numeracy National Partnership Program. This program is aimed to support students who are performing below the national minimum standard in NAPLAN results. The program that Erina will deliver is aimed at improving student reading and comprehension. Mr Chapman and Mr Schoffl will develop the program focused in stage 4 which will be implemented across all curriculum areas. Our school development day focus in term 3 will be around the literacy continuum and how staff map students reading and comprehension identifying areas of strength and development. From here we will implement explicit reading strategies to reinforce how to interpret and infer meaning from text in an effort to build student confidence and skill in reading. Improved reading also assists students writing ability as they generally will have a more extensive vocabulary to draw upon when extended writing tasks are presented. Recently EHS hosted a parent forum through random invitations sent to parents we were able to gather important feedback from our school community and how we can strengthen our image in the community and become the local secondary school of choice. Emerging themes from this forum were around improving our image in the community through better promotion of our programs and student achievements, tighter monitoring procedures for uniform, truancy and discipline in classrooms and improved communication between home and school.. There were lots of positive comments on the all round nature of the school being inclusive, staff being approachable and improvements noted with transition, and uniform. It is our intention to hold another forum before the end of the term to report back on the actions developed to address these themes. If you are interested to attend the next parent forum please contact me at school so an invitation can be sent to you. As the cooler weather is now upon us I am concerned our standard of uniform is slipping and seek parent support in ensuring students have and are wearing the winter school uniform. A copy of the uniform code is included in the newsletter, please be aware that girls wearing tights without a skirt over the top are being given a skirt to wear from the uniform clothing pool or parents called to bring the skirt to school. Tights without a skirt over the top are usually not flattering and I seek parent support with this matter. Jeans are also NOT school uniform it is GREY pants for junior boys, NAVY pants for junior girls, BLACK pants for senior boys and girls. Jumpers/cardigans/sloppy joes are NAVY for the junior school and Black for the senior school. Parents needing assistance with school uni-form should contact the school where support can be provided. Thank you to the many students who are working so positively at Erina High School and maximising the learning opportunities being presented to them, Effort Crowns Success!! Yours Sincerely,

Mrs Karen Nicol Principal

PLAN-IT-YOUTH

PROGRAM

Plan it youth is a mentoring program that has been operating throughout the Central Coast, Hunter area and many parts of New South Wales for more than 15 years. It is directed at mentoring students in State schools in years 10 and 11 who have a wish to leave school for an Apprenticeship, TAFE or planned careers after turning 17 years. It is generally one period a week for 8-10 weeks during school hours. On the coast alone some 150 students a year benefit from this program. As a mentor I completed an initial training course through TAFE which also covered necessary Police enquiries to cover working with children. I have been mentoring for some 8 years and had the pleasure of working with some 20 plus students at Erina High School both boys and girls. In the mentoring role we endeavour to recognise the skills and abilities the student has and build a strong résumé that he or she has the belief, confidence and pride in to present to employers. We also try to give the student greater awareness of life after school and prepare them for that transition. As a mentor we are totally non-judgemental and have the interests of the student as our principal aim. As a general rule mentors are retired. The program is operating successfully at Erina, Kincumber and Berkeley Vale High schools in the immediate area and other schools outside that area with strong success over many years. Your student will be given the opportunity to participate in Plan-it-Youth program. I encourage you to explore this opportunity. To be part of this program please contact Di Pursehouse in the Careers Office on 4367 7353. Brian Jackson Head Teacher—Board of Studies

Biggest Morning Tea Success! Erina High School staff were extremely generous on Thursday 23

rd May when they

opened their hearts and their wallets to donate $900 to the Cancer Council for the

Biggest Morning Tea and fund raising Raffle!

Sweet treats and goodies were in abundance while staff took the opportunity at Break 1

to have a quick chat over a cuppa. In taking part, all were contributing directly to ground

breaking research, prevention programs and crucial services that benefit cancer patients

and their families across NSW.

This year marked the 20th Anniversary of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea which, along

with the huge Raffle, has become an annual event for Erina High staff which is always

met with much enthusiasm and a kind spirit of giving.
