MAX POTENTIAL

“Showcasing young leaders making a difference in th eir local community” Max Potential is a program that brings together young people who display leadership potential, with positive role models in our community. The benefits of this program are far reaching, as it is seeking to grow the potential of our leaders of tomorrow and guide them to make decisions which will benefit our entire community. Four Year 11 students from Erina High School took part in the MaxPotential program in 2010. The students were: Nadege Green who worked with a local Primary School to host a visit by the Central

Coast Mariners; Ryan Coughlan organised an indigenous AFL day for local Primary School Students. Clayton Davies raised boys’ awareness of dance at the Naidoc Day celebrations at

Erina High School; and Laura Harding organised a dance festival for residents of the Alloura Waters

Retirement Village.

Stage 4 learners have an interesting term ahead as they commence new design and technology units and make the change between geography and history. Some class changes have occurred between A stream and mixed ability classes to reward students who have shown diligence and aptitude in semester 1. The ‘A’ stream classes move more quickly through the curriculum and examine topics and skills to a greater depth. In semester two students in stage 4 will be monitored to determine class placement for 2011. Later this term year 8 students will commence a program which will assist them to identify their supplementary subject choices for Stage 5 and the School Certificate.

Another Biggest Morning Tea Success for Erina High School!

The generous staff and students of Erina High School again outdid themselves with yet another hugely successful Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for the Cancer Council of Australia on May 27th. This year’s theme was Alice in Wonderland. Participants made a generous donation to enter the morning tea which allowed them to partake of the delicious cakes, sandwiches and savouries that were on offer. For a small entry fee staff could enter the Alice in Wonderland Trivia Quiz and the Guessing Competition which was also open to students. Brittany Pyne of Year 9 correctly guessed the number of lollies in the jar, and for her trouble won a jar of 853 lollies to share amongst her friends…or not! The Queen of Hearts Raffle was the biggest and best yet and raised over $600 alone. The total amount raised by the Biggest Morning Tea was a whopping $1221 which included funds from the Student Cake Stall which was held during Break 2 on the same day. I would like to thank staff and students for participating in the morning tea and for their generous donations and spirit of giving. A very special group of Year 11 students volunteered to assist on the day by setting up and running the Cake Stall and by moving around staffrooms and the playground with the Lolly Guessing Competition. Those students were Kristen Weddle, Kyle Gardner, Erin Altmann, Felicia Clark, Nadege Green, Natalie Knowles, Mitchell Evans, Thomas Moors, Mikayla Kelso, Blake Wyllie and Rebecca Knight. Alexander McKenzie of Year 7 generously donated a cake for the cake stall which I believe he cooked himself; so big thank you goes to Alex for his generosity too. I would also like to thank the following sponsors for their extremely generous donations of gifts or services, without whom the raffle could not be held:

BASKETBALL NEWS

15 years Boys Basketball The team consisted of Kaine Taylor, Shivaji Bhattacharya, Jordon Zorro, Noah Easton, Shannon McEwen, Tom Akamarmoi, Jason Clegg and Blake Lyon with assistance from Richard Cridland and Dillon Bombas. Our first game was against Northlakes HS at the Terrigal Basketball Stadium. This was a very close game and all the Northlakes boys were tall. We started the game badly and the boys were nervous, but as the game progressed we settled down and Tom and Blake scored frequently with good assistance from Shannon and Shivaji. We eventually won 28-24. Game 2 was against North Sydney Boys High at Terrigal Basketball Stadium. Again our opposition was very tall which made our job difficult as we only have three tall boys. Noah added height to our team as he did not play the first game due to an injury. Our basic skills let us down with everyone sharing the scoring. Jason sunk our only 3 pointer of the game. We lost easily 66-18. Many thanks to Richard and Dillon who helped out at training and with the scoring of our games.

15 years Girls’ Basketball The team consisted of Jessika Manners, Brittany Payne, Phoebe Winter, Dana Crosland, Angela Redden, Charlotte Zorro and Emily Haywood. Our first game was against Lisarow HS and we played at Central Coast Youth Centre at Niagara Park. We were up against a team of representative players and Lisarow immediately went to a commanding lead. By half time we were down by 15 points but all the girls tried their best. As some of our girls were new to basketball we were

relying heavily on Emily, Charlotte, Angela and Brittany to control our game. From the half time mark the girls suddenly started to take charge of our older and more experienced opponent. Our defence tightened and suddenly Lisarow were not scoring. Emily and Brittany took control and as a team outplayed Lisarow in an exciting second half. Phoebe, Dana and Jessika started believing we could win and with great teamwork we nearly did! We lost 44-41. I genuinely think if the game went for five more minutes we could have won. Well done girls! A Whatson (Coach)

A WORLD CLASS PERFORMANCE Congratulations to Mitchell Tysoe of Year 12 who placed 6th at the World Junior Championships in Moncton, Canada in his favourite event the 110metre hurdles. Mitch achieved the best result by a NSW athlete at the World Juniors meet and this result is a wonderful reward for the hours of training and commitment to ‘Personal Best’ that he brings to his sport. Mitchell made a very decisive start to his World Junior campaign with a superb win in his heat in a personal best time of 13.72, run into a headwind. 'It felt great from the very start. I got out first. I was mainly worried about my start, and it came together for me. One of my goals was just to get out of the heat, and I'm very happy.'' Mitchell continued his great form in the semi-final, placing third in 13.77 and progressing to the final, where he finished sixth in 13.87 into a strong wind of 2.4 m/s.

OUR ROTARY CONNECTION Congratulations to Bethany Matheson who has been successful in her selection to attend

the National Youth Science Festival in January 2011. This is a most prestigious event which brings together the best and most committed science students from around Australia! Bethany is being sponsored by Erina Rotary who will be holding a garage sale and sausage sizzle at Erina High School on the day of the Federal Election– August 21st to help Bethany fund-raise for the festival. Please consider voting at our school and buying a sausage sandwich to help Bethany on her way.

PARENTS’ AND CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATION NEWS A sincere invitation is extended to all families within the school community to join our dedicated band of P&C members who support students and staff to improve learning opportunities at our school. Your input will be valued and research shows that the contribution you make to the education of your children and their connectedness to school is truly enhanced by your efforts.

The next meeting of the P&C is scheduled to be held in the Erina High School library on Wednesday August 18th at 6.30 pm. An overview of some of the work and achievements of the school during the past months will be a part of the evening and the new P&C tab on the school website will be previewed. Check it out at: www.erina-h.schools.nsw.edu.au

SCHOOL ZONES…KEEPING OUR CHILDREN SAFE Our location on the Entrance Road poses real concerns as students negotiate traffic during their journeys to and from school. Fencing of the median strips has been a welcome addition to other safety measures already in place. The laws regarding school speed zones have been made in response to community concern and accident data. These laws INCREASE the SAFETY of our students and are not just revenue raisers. I would urge all those driving in the vicinity of the school to abide by both street signage and the established school zones to ensure our students have a safe environment during their travel to and from school. The following link is a useful reference about the fines and demerit points lost for traffic offences in school zones. : http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/schoolroadsafety/

SUCCESS FOR ERINA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT... We applaud the achievements of Samuel Yeats (Class of 2001) and winner of the Anthill 30under30 award.

Name: Samuel Yeats Age: 25 (b. 1984) State: NSW Industry: Internet Hosting Services Company: Ultra Serve, Rejila While most people were hanging out with mates during lunch breaks in Year 10, Samuel Yeats was negotiating with the receiver of a failed Telco to acquire its hosting customers. Nine years later, Yeats is now the founder and CEO of Ultra Serve, a leading Australian managed internet hosting service provider, competing and winning contracts in head-to-head competition with industry giants such as Telstra, Macquarie Telecom and Web Central. “Ultra Serve has rapidly grown over the past few years,” says Yeats. “Clients are looking to reduce costs and find ways to work more efficiently – both are the business’s key value propositions.” In 2008, when Microsoft, Google and Amazon all launched their respective cloud services infrastructure, cloud computing became the new darling of the ICT industry. But Australian businesses are not spoilt for choice when it comes to locally-based services. Yeats and his Ultra Serve team pioneered the launch of Rejila, the first Australian cloud infrastructure platform. The service allows users to share a large pool of computing resources and dynamically change their share depending on their needs at any given time. “Cloud computing has quickly risen as a flexible and scalable hosting solution that is both cost effective and environmentally responsible,” says Yeats. He is not expecting the company’s rapid growth to plateau any time soon, with cloud hosting projected to grow into 78 billion dollar industry by 2012! ENTREPRENEURSHIP ACCORDING TO SAMUEL: What motivates you as an entrepreneur? Closing the next business deal, the challenge and stimulation of keeping up with an ever-evolving and developing industry, seeing the business grow and seeing our clients grow (working with fast-growth clients stimulates my entrepreneurial brain).

What is 30under30? 30under30 is an initiative that was launched in early 2008 to encourage and promote entrepreneurship among young Australians. Each year, Anthill readers nominate young Australian entrepreneurs deserving of recognition for their outstanding entrepreneurial endeavours. Anthill’s editorial team then identifies and profiles the top 30 Australian entrepreneurs under the age of 30.

WHAT’S COMING UP FOR SENIOR STUDENTS Our senior students are all working towards importa nt academic benchmarks :

Year 11 students will complete preliminary course s tudies this term and commence their

HSC year in term 4. Year 11 semester one reports indicated that the majority of students are

managing the demands of senior study well and should feel proud of their achievements.

Students should be vigilant and complete all tasks identified in N determination letters as non

-completion of these tasks will result in them failing to satisfactorily complete the preliminary

course and so be unable to progress to Year 12 in that subject.

Year 12 students approach that time when their secondary studies will end. Trial HSC

examinations will commence on Friday this week and continue through weeks 5 and 6. All

HSC course lessons will conclude at the end of term 3. A formal Farewell Assembly will be

held for year 12 students and their families on Friday September 24 th. It is vital that students

remain focused and build on their current study pattern in term 3 in order to achieve their best

results in the HSC external examinations which commence on Thursday October 14th.

A range of support systems will be provided for yea r 12 in the coming weeks to assist

them in their preparation for the HSC. Our careers adviser Mrs Pursehouse should be the

first point of contact for UAC entries, TAFE deadlines and scholarship availability. Mr Allomes

will continue to deliver the UAI preparation program for students seeking to maximise the

university entrance rank. Year 12 students will receive a separate letter advising them of

procedures in the lead up to the HSC, the exams themselves and sign out guidelines. This is

a very busy and emotional time for our most senior students. School personnel are

experienced and here to help… just ask!

An important routine for all year 12 students should be a daily check of the year 12

careers noticeboard in bottom ‘A’ block. Information on courses, scholarships, traineeships

and apprenticeships will be posted there daily. Deadlines come ‘thick and fast’ in the second

half of term 3 and must be met!!!

A careers newsletter will be published as a supplement in this newsletter each fortnight.
