Tennis
Editor’s note
But the reason I am doing this
magazine is because I am going to
explain how to play tennis and learn to
like it like me. I play tennis four days a
week and take two lessons, one day
with my dad and one day with my
friends. My favourite tennis player is
Nadal because he is number one in the
world. I think it is cool when someone
gets aced or does an over head smash.

5. If you do not know the best way to hold the ratchet hold it with continental grip the same way you hand shake a friend but don’t let go at the end.
6. As you throw the ball up keep your eyes on the ball toss the ball up a few times and when you get used to were the ball goes the most then swing at the ball.
7. After you serve with your tennis racket move approximately one foot and a half behind the base line because the ball will bounce pretty far past the baseline (depends on what ball you are using) any further your opponent will probably do a drop shot that you can’t get to.
Danger! Avoid getting hit by your partner’s racket at all costs getting hit in the face is not worth winning the point.
9. The last thing you need to know is how to do a regular shot from the base line to any were on the court. To do a regular shot you need to go low to high when you hit the ball with your racket.
How To Hit A Tennis Ball (without tennis skills) Playing Tennis For
Beginners
So you think you can go on a tennis court
and serve a tennis ball and start playing?
Well, think again. You’d probably double
fault serving every time and miss the ball
attempting to hit it. If you think your
talented enough to start playing tennis,
here’s where you start. Read and learn.
1. The three things every tennis player needs are a tennis racket, a few tennis balls and some tennis shoes. A $20 racket is good to start with, plus if you break it, you only lost a $20 dollar piece of equipment.
2. You need to start on an indoor court so there is no wind to curve the ball. Don’t go out playing tennis where you’ve never played on before like on an outside court. You should feel comfortable in your surroundings and have an idea were the wind is blowing.
3. Once you’ve picked out the right tennis racket the first thing you need to learn is how to serve because that is the first thing you do. Get a friend that is good at playing tennis, take notes, and learn from him.
4. To begin with walk out next to your friend and line up directly sideways to the net, depending on the serve you are trying to do),at the baseline and take a few shadow swings (a swing without a ball) so you get used to it.
A Babolat is a good tennis
racket to have once you
get good.
All good tennis players
need some tennis shoes.
In 1875, Babolat is the oldest company specialized in racket
sports and the largest in stringing. You can easily tell that it is a Babolat racket because it has two black lines running across the bottom of the racket and you can also tell because it says Babolat all over it. Babolat has built a reputation for providing products to many of the champions who have won in many tournaments.

This awesome tennis racket is used in every stage of
tennis even for pros and beginners. It was created in 1875
but has gotten better since then. The picture up there is
the newer version of the racket. So be sure to get it.
As with most Babolat rackets its
performance is extremely excellent
You can also re-grip the racket so it’s stickier than before or you can over grip the racket to make it fit your hand (over grip is when you keep the grip on and just put another one on top). The racket frame is made of graphite, titanium and carbon fiber. The string is made of Kevlar. The grip is made of latex. The price of this racket is $119.00. The first Babolat tennis racket was made of wood and the string was made of natural marital such as cow guts or other animal guts. When you buy one of these tennis rackets it comes with a vinyl case to protect the racket being damaged. The width of the racket is can be 23-26 mm long the length is 26 inches weight is 245 grams.
The first part of this racket that is usually noticed is the frame
or strings because they are the largest parts in the racket.
You can re-string the racket to make it more powerful and
less control or more control and less power.

Rafael Nadal #1 in the world right now
because he is the greatest tennis player of all.
Nadal 2002-2004
On April 2002 Rafael Nadal won his first ATP match against
Ramon Delgado, and became the ninth player to enter the
open era (the open era is a tournament where professional
tennis players verse amateurs) at age 16.In the following
year, Nadal won two challenger titles and finished the year
in the top 50s.At his Wimbledon match public on television
in 2003, Nadal became the youngest man to reach the third
round since Boris Becker in 1984. During 2004, Nadal played
his first match against Roger Federer #1 in the world at
Miami in the 2004 Miami Masters, and won all sets. He is
one of the six players that played and won against Federer
that year. He missed most of the clay court games, including
the French open because of a stress fracture in his left ankle.
Nadal at 18 years old and 6 months became the youngest
player to register in singles victory in a Davis Cup final for a
winning nation. By beating number two in the world Andy
Roddick, he helped helped Spain clinch the 2004 title over
the United States in a 3–2 win. He finished the year ranked

There was one moment in my
life I will always remember I
was just a kid who liked to play
tennis until this very moment I
am going to tell you about.
It was the final match and it
was broiling hot and I was on
the sunny side receiving the
serve. He finally served the ball
and it came at me and it came
fast. I won the game the score
was 4, 2 for me.
It was a nice hot relaxing
summer day and I was cooling
down and eating breakfast in
my basement when my dad
came down and told me that I
was going to play in a
tournament. I was really
nervous and I did not want to
go to it because I thought I
would do horrible and also
because I just want to play
tennis for fun not
competitively plus I would have
to play with complete
strangers. After that my dad
and I went to some tennis
courts so he could get me
ready for the tournament.
When we went home to rest I
was extremely tired so my dad
said “you have to get more
stamina so that I don’t get
tired as quickly”. The day after
I will always remember…
By Eric Nguyen
was the tournament and so we booked a
court a few minutes before the first match.
It was a round robin so after I finish the first
match I rest a bit then we have to start the
next. It was the day of the tournament and I
was still scared. We went to our court to
warm up. We started volleying then we
moved on to mini tennis (the service boxes)
after that full court (the whole court
excepted double alleys). My Mom and my
brother called me to say that the
tournament was starting so I had to get
ready. My first opponent was, like I said a
total stranger. We got out on to the court
and he spun his racket to see which one of
us will serve, it landed up so he served (and
that’s good because I don’t like to serve
first) and so if he gets to serve than I get to
choose which side I get to go on. I chose the
shady side because it was a really hot day
and if I was on the sunny side I would burn
up but, after we finish the first game we
have to switch sides any way. After that we
started playing right away and the
breaks between games were only
a minute or two and I was getting
tired and I was really looking
forward to the next rest. My
opponent hit the ball sky high and
it was heading out. I was about to
win but the ball could curve in so I
had to get ready. It landed out
just by tiny bit and I won the
match but that was just the first
one, but out of 2 more. I went out
on the bench to rest and while I
was resting I watched my next
opponent to check his playing
style. The break was over and now
it is time to start the game I spun
my racket and he won the spin
also he chose that I served first.
The final score was 3, 4 a close
match but he won that match.
This time the break was longer
than before because we were
supposed to get lunch and so we
did. When we go it was the final
match and it was broiling hot and
I was on the sunny side receiving
the serve. He finally served the
ball and it came at me and it
came fast. I won the game the
score was 4, 2 for me. I had won 2
out of three games and therefore
I came 3rd in my first tournament.
Advice from the Tops with Eric Nguyen
Michael Treagus
What is the difference between the U.S open, Wimbledon and all the other big tournaments?
Well most of the tournaments are different than others from the courts because they can be grass, clay and hard courts.
Sangwon Kee
How do you swing the racket without letting go of it?
You ether grip your racket tighter or you get a new better grip.
But after I tried to grip it tighter it still could not keep it in my hand so I went and bought a new grip but I did not know how to put the grip on.
Well the first thing you do is get the little piece of tape and put it at the small end of the grip. Then you wrap it all the way down to the bottom of the racket. After that you go to a court and play tennis and you should be fine.
Eric Lee
How do you count the score in a game?
15, 30, 40 after 40 you get a game but, if you get 40, 40 it would be deuce and then advantage left\right
Judson Stanton
I broke my racket string what do you
do with it now, do I get a new racket?
Of course not. You can get it you can
get it restrung at the store you got it
at.
Kyle Sue
I keep missing the ball because I ‘am
usually not ready when the ball comes
at me. Could you give some advice
you me?
If I was you I would keep my feet
moving, setup early and run to the
ball.
Jorge Rodriguez
I know there are a few types of grips
to hold the racket. What are the grips
and when do you hold them.
There is eastern backhand grip, continental grip, eastern forehand grip, semi western grip and double handed backhand grip.
You can use eastern backhand and double handed backhand grip when you are hitting a ball from the backhand side, continental when serving and volleying, eastern forehand and semi western for balls coming from the forehand side
Duncan Harrison
Are there shoes specialized for
tennis or do you just wear any type
of shoe?
There are tennis shoes but they
can look like other shoes so to
make sure it is a tennis shoe check
if the bottom looks similar to this
And most tennis shoes are white.
Ben Swan
What is the best brand for a tennis
racket?
Well I would say that Babolat is the
best brand because Some famous
tennis players use that brand of
racket and so do I.
Thomas Swan
What is the difference between
tennis and badminton?
The difference between then is
that you use different types of
rackets and balls and also you keep
track of the score differently.
Answers Questions
Dylan Freddi Why do you bounce the ball when you are about to serve?
You bounce the ball when you are about to serve because when you are about to serve you need to be calm so you
can hit the ball exactly where you want. Otherwise it would be part of you serving routine.
Then Head (A company that makes
tennis racket) created the first composite framed tennis racket in 1969 and that’s when the rackets looked a lot like the newly made ones today.
In the 1970’s the success of metal rackets began the experiment of making rackets with non traditional metals which are glass fibre, carbon fibre. But carbon fibre was very expensive because players preferred to use it more than other rackets made of different materials. Also it was much stiffer and stronger than the other materials.
The history of the tennis racket
Introduction to the tennis racket
Lawn tennis is the earliest form of tennis and that’s what they called it when it was first introduced in the 1870’s but now we call it real tennis. Real tennis is played with a tennis racket with a wooden frame but the frame is not like the frame in any rackets you would see today because it looked more like a badminton racket then a tennis racket!
But it was only till the 16th
century was when they started to use it.
Soon After that William Augustus Larned (the winner of many grand slam cups) invented the steel framed tennis racket and that’s when the frame started to look a bit more like the ones you see today but still a bit like a badminton racket.
The first form of the tennis racket
The first form of the tennis racket was made
by French monks in the 1870’s and it had a
wooden frame and the strings where made
of sheep intestines. Also they are much
lighter than the more recent made rackets.

Tennis is a great sport to play but without the
tennis racket it would almost be impossible to
play so that’s why some monks in France made
a racket with a wooden frame to play tennis
but tennis originated from handball where you
are supposed to hit a ball over a net with just
your bear hand. That would be really tough to
hit a ball over a net with just your hand so they
made the racket so that it would be easier to
hit the ball over the net.

Problems/controversies
Some problems in making the tennis racket was
that when they first made the tennis racket they
did not have the right materials to make it and
they did not know the best form to make it as.
Conclusion
In the 1870’s the wooden racket was invented
In 1922 William Augustus Larned invented the steel tennis racket
In 1969 Head made the composite tennis racket
In the 1970’s other rackets were made with other materials
I think that in the future we will have lighter tennis rackets.
Eric,
I have written to you to tell you about your
interesting articles about tennis. I, who does not
really play tennis, thought your articles were
perfect for a beginner. When I got to the article
called “Babolat Tennis Racket”, I read about it
and thought it sounded like a top notch tennis
racket. I would certainly like to try this tennis
racket, but it costs over $100. I also thought that
it was very interesting that Babolat used to make
their racket out of cow guts of some other type
of guts and wood. It looks like they have done a
lot of work since then! I wonder what Babolat
will do next! I like the way you put some of the
history and all the good labels on the picture. I
am sure it will be very nice considering how the
racket looks now and how good of a racket they
sound like.

the tennis racket that I wrote about is the
same as the one I am using to play with at
the time.
Dear Eric: I was never a tennis
player, but Tremendous Tennis has
inspired me to start playing. Your
article called “Welcome to The U.S.

readers don’t just read you
encouraging written work, but also
have a visual effect.

Thanks Lauren for the nice letter
about my magazine and I hope you
get good at playing tennis good
luck.
Eric,
I was really interested in your instructions
article on how to properly hit a tennis ball
because I always play badminton during the
summer for fun with my family, but never
tennis. However, I’ve always been curious
about playing tennis. My dad says tennis is
harder than badminton, but how much
harder is it actually? Following your
instructions article, maybe I could finally try
playing tennis!
-Jessica, B.C. Canada
Thank you for the very nice letter Jessica
tennis I think is a little bit harder than
badminton but only because the ball is
allowed to bounce so you have to move
more to get to the ball and the ball
comes at you much faster than a birdie
does.
