The Music department was awarded a “Grade 1 Outstanding” report by Ofsted. Around 80% of music students progress to H.E music and music technology based courses. 42% of students are awarded places at leading conservatoires; many on scholarships. 65 students study A Level Music and 65 students study A Level and BTEC Music Technology at Xaverian College. The department also runs ABRSM Theory Classes.

The music department has many impressive ensembles including an outstanding orchestra with over 110 musicians and a fabulous choir with over 120 singers. There are also a large number of impressive chamber ensembles including chamber orchestra, big band, studio band, flute group, clarinet group, saxophone group, string group, brass band, jazz band, chamber choir, percussion ensemble, and many rock bands. There is also enrichment provision for urban music and popular music.

The music and music technology facilities are second to none. They include 13 rehearsal rooms, 6 recording rooms, a studio, 2 computer suites (Mac & PC) with professional quality microphones.

Our music resources are among the best found in any sixth-form college. Students are encouraged to take an active role in these musical activities and to form and direct their own ensembles.

Young Musician of the Year…

RNCM Performance Master Classes The RNCM visit Xaverian College on an annual basis to run a performance masterclass. Students receive extensive feedback for their performances and advice on how to prepare for auditions. Xaverian students are currently embarking on auditions to universities and music colleges, this opportunity enables students to focus and understand the audition process. The RNCM visited Xaverian on the 2nd of November and spent 3 hours coaching our fantastic students. Katie Chatburn is the RNCM’s Professional Development and Musicianship tutor in popular music. An accomplished cellist, composer and writer, Katie specialises in music for film, instrumental concert commissions and rock and pop string arranging. Holder of a Masters degree in composition from the RNCM, Katie has worked for established acts such as Imogen Heap, Neil Hannon, Marillion, Essie Jain and Parka and has undertaken composing and performing projects for the BBC, C4 and Boosey and Hawkes as well as a range of up and coming bands, solo artists and film makers. Her music has been played at major venues including the Royal Festival Hall and has been performed by a range of ensembles including the Locrian Ensemble, the Acapella Singers, Hull Sinfonietta and The Pennine Spring Music Orchestra. In addition to her role at the RNCM Katie is a composer and consultant for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and is also writing, producing and arranging recordings for Faber Music as part of the government led Sing Up project.

The summer concert was held at the RNCM, the concert was a huge success and was a collaborative concert featuring ensembles and musicians from Xaverian College, One Education and MANCEP schools.Xaverian College String Quartet & Flute Quartet – Directed by Duncan ReidThe Xaverian College String Quartet and Flute Quartet, directed by Duncan Reid, performed a selection of pieces before the concert and during the interval in the concourse of the RNCM’s concert hall.Xaverian College Big Band – Directed by Neil BowdenThe Xaverian College Big Band, directed by Neil Bowden, is one of the college’s exclusive and leading ensembles. Neil Bowden takes immense pride and joy in writing bespoke arrangements to highlight the section leaders and vocalists. The Big Band performed ‘Tribute to Maurice’, an arrangement of songs by Earth, Wind & Fire to commemorate the life and work of Maurice White; the legendary founder of the group. The band finished by playing a disco classic – ‘You Should Be Dancing’ by The Bee Gees, featuring several the college’s talented vocalists.MYSO & Xaverian College String Orchestra – Directed by Kate MoranThe Xaverian College String Orchestra teamed up with Manchester Youth String Orchestra, MYSO, to perform a selection of pieces; Evening Prayer from Hansel & Gretel by E. Humperdinck, Czar’s Evening Waltz by Andreei Obukhov and Mikhail Shishkin, and Agincourt by Doug Spata.Xaverian College Concert Choir and The Showcase Choir – Directed by Ged MarciniakThe Xaverian College Choir, directed by Ged Marciniak, is made up of music and music technology students, non-music students and staff members; the choir also included guest singers from Loreto College. The choir performed ‘Bogoroditse Devo’ from Rachmaninov’s Vespers.The Showcase Choir, directed by Ged Marciniak, was a new and exciting venture for ‘One Education’. The choir was a celebration between Xaverian College, One Education and MANCEP schools. The choir sang ‘This is Me’ from the film The Greatest Showman and finished the concert with the Showcase Orchestra; performing a medley of songs from Schonberg’s ‘Les Miserables’.The Showcase Orchestra – Directed by Andrew LevendisThe conclusion of the concert saw another collaboration, this was a joint orchestra consisting of the Xaverian College Orchestra, Manchester Youth Wind Orchestra (MWYO), MYSO, King David musicians and Loreto College musicians. The orchestra performed Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No.5, John Williams’ ‘Empire Strikes Back’ and concluded the concert with Schonberg’s ‘Les Miserables’; accompanied by the Showcase Choir.

The Xaverian College Young Musician of the Year competition was held on Friday the 3rd of November. The competition took place in front of a packed house in the college’s Drama Studio and was a wonderful evening. The competition has been running for many years and assists students in their preparations for conservatoire auditions; giving them invaluable performance experience. The panel members consisted of Xaverian College music staff and peripatetic instrumental staff. Director of Music, Andrew Levendis said, “The adjudication of this year’s competition was extremely difficult. It was an absolute pleasure to hear musicians perform in a variety of genres. I am very proud to be the musical director of such an amazing department and work with such wonderful staff and students.”

News/Trips/Events

Christmas ConcertThe Xaverian College Christmas Concert was held at the RNCM on Tuesday 19th December and was performed in front of a full house; including the honourable mayor of Manchester and the Bishop of Salford Diocese. The concert consisted of 125 Xaverian students, music staff, peripatetic staff and some of the college’s finest former pupils. On show were the highly acclaimed Xaverian ensembles; already attracting media attention via their very own Xaverian Music Department YouTube channel.

The evening began with the college big band, directed by Neil Bowden. They performed ‘Spain’ by Chick Corea, followed by ‘Beartown Beat’ by Gwilym Simcock. Following this the flute group, directed by Jennifer Dyson, performed the festive classic ‘Troika’ by Prokofiev, and two of our talented pianists, Ben Attfield and Miles Lavelle-Golding, teamed up to perform the rousing duet ‘Slavonic Dance No.1 Op46’ by Antonin Dvorák. The college’s brass band performed the traditional march ‘Cross of Honour’ composed by William Rimmer (which was featured in the film Brassed Off); conducted by one of the college’s brightest students and conductors, Megan Bousfield. This was then followed by ‘Breakout’, by Ronan Hardiman, from Michael Flatley’s Lord of The Dance’. The band closed with the dramatic tone poem ‘Rufford Abbey’ composed by Drake Rimmer. The jazz group stirred the audience into a festive mood with a medley of Christmas tunes, arranged by their director Kyran Matthews.

The concert continued with the clarinet group, directed by Jessica Tomilinson, performing Mozart’s overture to ‘The Marriage of Figaro’. Duncan Reid directed the string group in a performance of the wonderful ‘Libertango’ by Piazolla. The first half concluded with the college choir, directed by Andrew Levendis, which was made up of music and music technology students, non-music students and several staff. The choir performed three movements from the highly acclaimed ‘Armed Man – A Mass for Peace’ by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. The second half opened with the vibrant and flamboyant percussion group, directed by Ged Marciniak, performing the uplifting music of Kevin Tuck and Ed Argenziano. Following a busy schedule of performances for college masses, the chamber choir, directed by Dan McDwyer, performed ‘Eatnemen Vuelie’ by Norwegian composer Frode Fjellheim along with traditional Christmas music; ‘Carol of The Bells’ by Mykola Leontovych and ‘Away in a Manger’. The college orchestra made up of 120 musicians concluded the concert, Andrew Levendis conducted the ensemble with an ambitious programme, ‘Mars’ from The Planets by Gustav Holst, ‘The Firebird’ by Igor Stravinsky and ‘Indiana Jones’ from the legendary film composer John Williams. To end the evening, the orchestra performed its traditional rendition of ‘Sleigh Ride’ by Leroy Anderson. The concert was a huge success and the audience gave a standing ovation to end the proceedings.

Andrew Levendis is a graduate of The Royal Northern College of Music, studying the violin under the tutelage of Professor Richard Ireland, and has been the Director of Music at Xaverian College for 17 years. He has been at the forefront in the development of the Music department, increasing the number of students from 13 to 140 studying both A Level Music and Music Technology. Andrew gives private theory lessons and teaches the violin. He is also a freelance musician/conductor, regularly performing in string quartets, Greek bands and orchestras. Andrew has recently taken the role of the musical director of the Trafford Music Service Philharmonic Orchestra.

Neil studied composition under Professor Peter Graham; winning The Elgar Howarth Composition Award. He also studied conducting under Professor David King. Neil obtained a Masters in Conducting from the University of Durham. Neil teaches piano, trumpet/cornet, and theory. Neil’s compositions have been performed at The Great Northern Brass Arts Festival, The RNCM, Brass Festival, at the National Youth Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, at the European Youth Brass Band Championships, broadcast live on BBC Radio 3, and performed by such bands as YBS, Black Dyke, Fairey’s, Foden’s and EYMS. Neil has also played with some weird and wonderful people including (in no particular order): Edwin Starr, Diane Shaw, Jimmy James & The Vagabonds, Odyssey, Go West, George McCrae, Goodfellas, Mark Owen, Leo Sayer, Lewis Gates, Andrew Browning, Jane McDonald, Vic Reeves, Hale & Pace and Ken Dodd.

An eclectic and dynamic musician, Kyran is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, where he studied under Rob Buckland and became the only saxophonist to win all of the colleges major soloist competitions, including winning the Gold Medal. Whilst completing his undergraduate studies, he also became one of the youngest wind players to ever be awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Schools of Music. As a classical artist, Kyran has performed concertos at the Bridgewater Hall, World Saxophone Congress and Haden Freeman Concert Hall, in addition to solo recitals at the South Bank Centre and numerous other venues across the UK and South Africa. Kyran also regularly freelances with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and has commissioned and premiered over 40 works for saxophone. Kyran’s jazz playing has seen him perform at festivals and clubs across Western Europe and South Africa as both a sideman and a leader. He has also performed with such prestigious groups as NYJO and Beats n Pieces.

Ged is a teacher, musician and composer. He has worked in a variety of genres ranging from choral, musical theatre, orchestral, modern christian music through to performing, writing and producing popular indie and house music. He enjoyed a teaching position with the award winning Manchester Music Service for over ten years specialising in teaching music technology, directing city-wide senior ensembles and teaching classroom music curriculum to pupils with varying special educational needs. He is a professional choral director having directed such choirs as the Manchester United Youth Choirs, national Magic Voices Choirs and the Manchester Consort. As well as his teaching role at Xaverian, Ged works closely with the renowned theatre company ‘Ten Ten Theatre’ writing innovative drama and music products which are launching into over 2000 schools and colleges in the UK. Ged recently directed a full recording session at Abbey Road Studios for an upcoming “Children In Need” charity single.

Thomas is a freelance Bass Opera Singer and Vocal Animateur and Musical Director. As a Musical Director Thomas has worked with Feelgood Theatre Productions (Midsummer Night’s Dream 2017 and Romeo & Juliet 2018), RNCM Young Company (AMD Singin’ in the Rain 2017), The Academy Singers (2015 – present) and Nottinghamshire Scouts (Gang Shows 2010, 2012 & 2015).

As a Vocal Animateur he has worked with RNCM Young Company, Leeds Youth Opera, Xaverian College and Bishop Grosseteste University. Thomas is the Vocal Animateur in Residence for The Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra projects including; Friday Afternoons (Vocal Animateur & Chorus Master 2018), Collyhurst Sings (Vocal Animateur & Chorus Master 2016), The Planets (Chorus Master 2016) and Jason Manford Christmas Carol Concert (Chorus Master 2015).

Thomas has sung with Opera North, Grange Park Opera, Longborough Festival Opera, Wexford Festival Opera, Westminster Opera, The Royal Northern College of Music, Clonter Opera, Opera on Location, The Halle, The Philharmonia and multiple choral societies.

Born and bred in Manchester, Alison Farshi is a performer, accompanist and teacher working in Manchester and across North West England. Alison graduated at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. She returned to Manchester to study at the Royal Northern College of Music and completed her post-graduate studies in Piano accompaniment. Alison teaches ll levels, privately, in schools, colleges and universities. She has a busy schedule as an accompanist in recitals and concerts, auditions and exams combined with a thriving teaching practice.

Gemma Salmon, originally from South Devon, studied piano at the Royal Northern College of Music with Paul Janes and graduated in 2009. In addition to teaching at Xaverian College, Gemma works for Yorkshire Young Musicians at Leeds College of Music and at The Music Place, an independent music school in Altrincham. She is also a deputy teacher at Junior Royal Northern College of Music. With over ten years of teaching experience, Gemma enjoys helping students overcome challenges and developing their musical understanding and creativity. She has also worked for a specialist music theory website developer, writing content and recording scripts for educational videos. Gemma has a keen interest in music marketing, having worked with The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, at the RNCM and on other musical projects.

Jamie runs and performs in the Manchester based band Gypsies of Bohemia - a gypsy jazz ensemble specializing in arranging contemporary songs in a Gypsy Jazz style. The group regularly make appearances at most of the UKs leading festivals Including Glastonbury, Latitude, Boomtown, Green Man, Shambala, Kendal Calling, Womad, Secret Garden Party and are the regular house band at Festival No.6 as well as performing at functions and private/corporate events. He has taught guitar extensively from beginner to advanced levels in schools, colleges, music centres and privately around the North West and has extensive experience in preparing students for both Rockschool and ABRSM grade exams as well as teaching music theory, general musicianship and improvisation.

A graduate of both Manchester University and the RNCM, Duncan Reid is a busy chamber musician, orchestral musician and soloist. In addition to working with orchestras such as Opera North and the National Symphony Orchestra, Duncan has led various chamber orchestras, including guest-leading the European Chamber Orchestra for engagements throughout the UK. As a soloist, Duncan has performed several concerti by Vivaldi, and with the award winning Ryebank Trio has performed the Beethoven Triple concerto. To date, Duncan has performed in 29 countries. Duncan has always had a passion for teaching, and has over 10 years of teaching experience in both primary and secondary schools, as well as in a specialist music centre.

Daniel McDwyer is currently studying vocal and opera studies at the Royal Northern College of Music under the tuition of Thomas Schulze. He is a vocal mentor and assistant musical director for the Manchester United Foundation Choir, where he has performed with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and sang solo at Old Trafford Stadium. Daniel is the musical director at East Cheshire Musical Theatre and is currently working with Leeds Youth Opera as an Assistant conductor and vocal coach.

Jennifer studied at The Royal Northern College of Music. During her time at the RNCM, Jennifer received awards such as the Pat Barney Flute Prize, Trevor Wye Prize for Chamber Music, the June Emerson Wind Music Launchpad Prize and finalist in the Cross-School Chamber Prize. She was also a finalist in the prestigious RNCM Gold medal soloist competition in 2013, selected externally by the chairman of EMI records. Jennifer was introduced, inspired and taught the flute, by musician Graham Tear, musical director of the Brixworth Music Festival. As an orchestral player, Jennifer is an extra for the Welsh National Opera and the British Sinfonietta. She has played principal flute with established orchestras such as the Manchester Consort, Liverpool Mozart Orchestra and works as a session musician in the Kaleidoscope Orchestra performing as principal flute, recording for albums for chart artists such as Flux Pavilion.

Ellie has played in masterclasses with renowned cellists such as Miklos Perenyi, Steven Doane and Hannah Roberts, Ellie has a wealth of orchestral experience and has played in workshops with Manchester Camerata and BBC Symphony Orchestra, as well as leading the major RNCM orchestras and Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra at Bridgewater hall. One of Ellie’s main passions is chamber music and is the cellist of the Vandepeer quartet, who are recipients of the Lawrence Turner/Sir John Barbirolli memorial award and recently gained a place in the final of the RNCM’s ‘Weil Prize’. The quartet perform regular recitals around the UK in venues such as the Buxton Pavillion and Whitworth Art Gallery. They have performed in the RNCM concert hall as part of the 2017 chamber music festival, ‘Budapest’ and as part of the 2016 ‘Day of Song’.Ellie is passionate about sharing her love of music through both performing and teaching and as well as teaching in Xaverian College.

In June 2016 Michael graduated with First Class Honours from the Royal Northern College of Music under the tutorship of Professor Steven Mead and Dr. David Thornton. Whilst at the RNCM Michael was a co-founder of the award-winning A4 Brass Quartet and developed into a distinguished chamber musician. 2015 saw the first mainland European excursion for A4 Brass as they accepted the invitation to perform in the Trakai Fanfare Week in Lithuania. In February 2017, they toured the Channel Islands, performing in Jersey, Alderney and Guernsey and in the same month were selected for the highly respected Tillett Trust Young Artists’ Platform. A4 were also finalists in the 2017 Royal Over-Seas League Chamber Music competition, receiving the Elias Fawcett Award for an Outstanding Ensemble. In addition to this the quartet released their debut CD featuring new, original music composed specifically for the ensemble. Released at the RNCM Brass Band Festival in January 2016, it features composers including Martin Ellerby, Edward Gregson, Oliver Waespi and Nigel Clarke to name a few.

David begin his piano studies at the age of five, getting lessons from his grandmother, Margot Henry, before receiving scholarships to study with Dr. John O’Connor in the Royal Irish Academy of Music, and Dr. Mabel Swainson at the Leinster School of Music. He has since performed in numerous venues throughout the UK and Ireland, including the National Concert Hall (Dublin). He has won prizes in major competitions in Dublin, Sligo, Belfast, Derry, Ballymena, Arklow, and Moville. David is a graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, which he attended with the help of the Dora Gilson Scholarship, and studied with John Gough. David enjoys a busy performing schedule, where in the past few years, he has played in Thailand, America, Scotland, Ireland, and throughout the UK, as well as having his performances broadcast on national television and radio stations.

Michael Power is a young musician based in Manchester. Currently studying bass guitar at the Royal Northern College of Music, he is pursuing a career in the music industry as a versatile session player. Michael has been involved in an eclectic mix of different projects, working with the likes of Craig Ogden at the Bridgewater Hall, Martin Allcock of Jethro Tull, the Gibraltarian band Frontiers and the RNCM Session Orchestra.

As part of her masters training, Jessica has played with RNCM Symphony Orchestra and Concert Orchestra as well as undertaking a placement with LIME: Music for Health, a music therapy organisation that brings music to the wards of Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital. She is a founding member of Chameleon, a multi-instrumental wind quintet that formed at RNCM. They have won the June Emerson Launchpad Prize, the Trevor Wye Chamber Music Prize and were Highly Commended and won the audience prize for the Chris Rowland Chamber Music competition. Outside of her studies, Jessica has an active freelance career, regularly playing as a reed player for pit bands around the North West and previously in London. Recent musicals have included Legally Blonde, Guys and Dolls, Hairspray and 9 to 5. Her orchestral playing takes her all over the country, playing with Amadeus Orchestra, Piccadilly Symphony Orchestra, EC4, Notting Hill Orchestra and Liverpool Mozart Orchestra, allowing her to play in venues such as the Barbican Centre, Royal Festival Hall, Cadogan Hall and Exeter Cathedral.

Joshua is a freelance electric and upright bassist with vast experience in a wealth of genres of music. After graduating with a first class honours degree in music, specialising in jazz performance and composition, Joshua now plays professionally for a living. Having performed, toured and recorded extensively in a range of musical environments, ranging from jazz to classical to musical theatre, Joshua is well equipped to give well informed instrumental lessons. Playing/deputising on pro-tours of ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ and ‘The Last Five touring around Europe with 80’s pop star Carmel McCourt. Playing for Broadway composer Frank Wildhorn at The Palace. Performing with Manchester Camerata. Opening up Steve White drum clinics, playing with Chris Potter and the Inner City ensemble. Joshua also fronts his own Jazz ensemble; playing at Manchester Jazz festival, Marsden Jazz festival, Southport Jazz festival, and Kendal Calling.

A graduate of The Royal Northern College of Music, at the age of 24 he has toured Europe and the UK frequently and played at most of the UK’s and European major festivals. He has established himself firmly on the UK hip hop and Bass music scene through touring extensively with The Mouse Outfit, Jenna G and UK rapper Skittles. As well as touring throughout the year, Joe has performed and recorded with artists such as: Terri Walker, Shola Ama, Mahalia, Ghetts, Kevin Simm (The Voice winner), Bam (Jungle Brothers), Level and quite recently sat in with Kendrick Lamar at a reebok sponsored cypher. He has recording credits for Warner Brothers and featured on BBC Radio 1, 1xtra, BBC Radio 2, Channel 4 and Maida Vale studios. Most recently he has performed with the “Garage Classical” for LIMF 2017, where a 40 piece orchestra performed a selection of garage hits from the past 20 years. The event was broadcast live on Radio 1 and 1xtra. Some of the acts he performed with include: Kele Le Roc, Master of Ceremonies, Sweet Female Attitude and Richie Dan. Joe has a BA (hons) and an MA in popular music from the Royal Northern College of Music.

Cara Houghton

Cara is currently in her second year of study at the Royal Northern College of Music, under the tutelage of Laura Jellicoe and Josh Batty. Cara is principally a Flautist performing with the Dolce Flute Quartet, The Venus Trio and the Lumos Wind Quartet frequently, alongside larger ensembles such as the RNCM Wind orchestra and baroque ensemble. She completed her A levels at Xaverian in 2015 and has now returned as a Music Theory and Composition tutor available for one to one teaching.

Joseph Starbuck In 2014 Joe was invited to play first trombone for Verdi’s Requiem at the Worcester Cathedral with personnel from the BBC Symphony and National orchestra of Wales and the CBSO. Joe moved to Essen in Germany to study for a masters in performance under Christopher Holding. Joe toured the North of Germany with the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker, performing live on German radio. This led to him playing with the Duisburg Philharmonic and Dusseldorf Sinfoniker in a joint 2 year opera production of Verdi’s Aida. As part of an international trombone week, Joe and his trombone quartet were invited by Jamie Williams (Berlin Philharmonic) to play as part of his festival in Lausanne-Switzerland which also involved performances from trombonists such as Abbie Contant and Justin Clarke.

Graham South Graham leads a versatile musical life as a trumpeter and trumpet tutor. Since graduating from The University of Manchester in 2005 he has established a busy orchestral career, working with orchestras such as the BBC Philharmonic, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Manchester Camerata whilst also performing frequently in the jazz world, notably with the award winning Beats and Pieces Big Band and various small groups. Graham has been teaching and leading ensembles for over ten years and has experience with young beginners right up to advanced students, with several successful music college applicants among his pupils.
