Faith Healer certainly is a testof endurance. The play, di-rected by Mithran Devane-sen was staged over the

weekend at Sivagami Pethachiauditorium, to a not-so-receptive

    audience. Infact, some

    walked out.Faith Healer,

written byBrian Friel is acelebratedaward-winningplay, but didnot work purelybecause of the

weighty socio-geographicalreferences. Theplay is a series

of monologues, in four parts, per-formed by the faith healer FrankHardy (P.C. Ramakrishna), his

    wife Grace (Tehzeeb Katari) and

his manager Teddy (Karthik Sri-nivasan /TMK). Each of themonologues are perspectives ofthe trios travels across Wales andScotland, and their return to Ire-

land. All three speak about thesame places and specific inci-dents. The brilliance in the script

lies in their shifting narratives, which leads the audience to ask: What really happened?

P.C. Ramakrishna is a reliableactor to watch. With very little ef-

fort put in, and the actors domit to mere eight weekpreparation, he brought out aportrayal of Frank Hardy. Whe says with deliberation,

ways knew when nothing wasing to happen, regarding accidental nature of faith heaP.C delivers that line with a tkle in his eye. And of courshelps that the actor speaks sounds like Sean Connery.

The weakest link was TehKatari as Grace, whose burhysteria at the end of her p

was almost laughable. She maged to build up little sympregarding Franks treatmen

wards Grace. Karthik SrinivasTeddy was the only energcharacter on stage, but anypression that showed was puthe immense concentration

    Iam a trained break danc-

er. As of now, self-pro-claimed but if I am calledin for any TV reality

show, I would love to showcasemy dancing skills, says WorldBilliards Champion PankajAdvani.

The 23-year-old cueist also en-joys watching Hrithik Roshan andShahid Kapoor dance on screen.Who knows, some day Pankaj

could be one of the sportsmen-turned dancers on a reality show.

On a professional note After winning against the best

players from across the world in

the IBSF World Billiards Cham-pionship in both formats, Pankajis on a career high. Be it the pointor the time format, he equally en-

joys both. Both the formats are acontrast to each other but eachone has its own importance.Time format is a longer version, more like test cricket and puristsgenerally advocate this format

whereas point is more like 20-20cricket, which is sharper andshorter, explains the Khel Ratnarecipient, adding: I have to ex-plain billiards in terms of cricketto make it easy to understand forthe common masses.

He is the first and only player tohave achieved a grand double of

winning both the points andtimed formats at the IBSF WorldBilliards Championships twice

At the age of 10, Pankaj was in-troduced to snooker by his elderbrother Shree in a parlor in theneighbourhood where he used toplay. Eventually he gained inter-est in the game. For serious train-ing, he later joined Karnataka

State Billiards Association. Therehe was recognised by his coach,

Arvind Savur, a former nationalsnooker player.

In 2000, he played his first in-ternational match and now has 5

world titles to his credit. I wasjust 15 when I played my first In-ternational match in England, atthat point of time; I was too

young to understand anything. When I was younger, there hadbeen times when I cried after los-ing a match but as I grew strongermentally and in my game as wellsmiles Pankaj but, even today Ihave butterflies in my stomachbefore any game. I would be lyingif I say I dont, its just that now I

Remember hanging on the foot-board of the bus or sitting on theroof of the MTC bus celebratingBus Day? Or, from a distance,

seeing rows of trucks transport heavygoods. One pioneer in the automobilesector was Ashok Leyland, which re-cently celebrated its Diamond Jubilee. From a humble start by assembling

Austin cars and trucks to manufactur-ing larger utility vehicles, the companyhas come a long way. We cannot tell thecomplete story of its journey in one ar-ticle, but its a milestone to cherish. Here are some nuggets of informationabout an old player in the Detroit ofSouth Asia.

    Birth of a sector

Raghunandan Saran was the founderof Ashok Motors Ltd. and the nameAshok was named after his son. Thecompany, incorporated in September1948, was established in a fishing villageof Ennore, just north of Madras, whereit acquired 124 acres of land from C.Narayanaswami Pillai.

Varalakshmi Devi, one of the oldestshareholders and daughter of Naraya-naswami Pillai, is in her 80s now anddoes not recall anything about the landher father sold to the Sarans. My father

was working as a station master and we were five children staying in Nellorewhen he sold the land, says Devi, whohas around 2,000 shares of the compa-ny.

Later, in 1950, the company acquiredthe rights to manufacture Leyland veh-icles in India. Thus, the name of thecompany was changed to Ashok Ley-land in 1955 heralding another mil-estone.

Historian S. Muthiah recalls the com-panys strong British connection sinceits origin and a unique record of payingdividends.

    Those were the days

    * Old-timers recall the hands-ontraining Ashok Leyland emphasises on.The staff had to spend three to fourmonths in each place and it was old-fashioned British training which wasimparted in each of the places.

    * R.J. Hancock, Managing Director of Ashok Leyland (1973-76), recalls how

he found that during power shortagesthe workers worked with no fans, andvery little light, trying to save electricity,

while the staff was going back to plushoffices with air-conditioners. The nextday, We suffered like the workers did.But I noticed that one of the seniormanagers had decided to ignore my in-struction (to turn off the air-condition-ing). The next day there was a big holein the wall where his air-conditionerused to be.

    * A. Ramaswami Mudaliar, firstChairman of Ashok Leyland (1955 72)used to call for an almanac (panchan-gam) at the end of every meeting tochoose an auspicious day for the nextBoard meeting. All this rather amusedthe British directors, but they soon be-

gan to appreciate the Indian mindseton matters of faith and they participa-ted enthusiastically.

    * S.G. Subramanian, then one of thetwo sales engineers who needed to onlysit at their desks to find orders pouringin, remembers test driving a rail-busbetween Mambakam and Tambaram

with a horzionatl 680 underfloor enginepowering it. It worked well but the rail-car application was not pursued. It,however, later made an appearance inCeylon, where it was a success for a

while. Compiled by Liffy Thomas with inputs

It is the cost factor that firstattracted them here for edu-cation, with the fee structureabout one-third of that in the

US or UK.But for Indian students, en-

rolled in educational instituteshere, this cosmopolitan city statehas become more than a secondhome.

After living here for almostthree years now, I have realisedthat it is a very safe place, saferthan India. I feel extremely securehere and my parents back homedo not have to worry for me, An-vi Shan, a Mumbaikar who is now

pursuing a course in Hospitalityand Tourism Management inEast Asia Institute of Manage-ment said.Cultural compatibility, proximity to the home-state aresome of the other factors that arepropelling many other studentslike Avni throng Singapore.

As per the 2007 records, Singa-pore has 86,000 students from120 nationalities pursuing vari-ous courses here. Seventy-fiveper cent of the total student-pop-ulation here is from foreign coun-tries and Indian students are onlysecond to their Chinese counter-parts in numbers here.

Initially, it was only the feesthat attracted us to this place. Af-ter coming here, life seems to beso easy here. Finding an accom-modation, or education loan, get-ting a student pass et al is not at aproblem. Thanks to no red tape,

we get our passports and visas re-newed within minutes, PankajKhanna, from the ManagementInstitute said.

To use the system, riders must

It is no surprisethat Barcelona lost here and it

Valencia lead the standings ongoal difference after a late JuanMata goal downed 10-man Osa-suna at the Mestalla. Mata struckseven minutes from time for thebreakthrough after Osasuna hadbeen reduced to 10 men with Ce-sar Azpilicueta received hismarching orders just after thehour for a second booking. Be-ing top is not that significant asthere are various teams with sev-en points, said Valencia coachUnai Emery. The most impor-tant thing for us is that we areimproving and collecting pointsfrom difficult games like this one.

We knew it was a test of patiencebecause Osasuna are hard toopen up.

Indias Independence Cup win inDhaka in 1998 looked highly un-likely after arch-rivals Pakistan, batting first, had posted a mam-

moth total of 314. Saeed Anwar (140)and Ejaz Ahmed (117) made centuriesas the Indian bowlers were pasted allover the park.

But there was some hope as theDhaka pitch was a flat one and looked

a batsmans paradise even after 50overs had been bowled. With the ex-plosive Sachin Tendulkar and SouravGanguly opening the batting, the In-dians needed some quick runs to turnthe tide in their favour. The two puton 71 for the first wicket in 8.2 oversbefore a clever bowling change by Pa-kistan skipper Rashid Latif did thetrick. Shahid Afridi was brought inand he bowled a googly, forcing Ten-dulkar into an expansive drive. AzharMahmood completed the formality. It was a huge total. But Sachin andSourav gave us a great start and all ofus knew the total was achievable, says Hrishikesh Kanitkar, one of themembers of the side. After Sachinsdismissal Robin Singh was sent in to

keep up the momentum and he com-bined well with Sourav and they tookthe score to 250. They literally toyed

with the bowling and scored at will

    PHOTO: V.GANESAN

and we were sitting pretty, but onceRobin was dismissed we lost a fewquick wickets.

India lost skipper Mohammed Azharuddin, Ganguly, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Ajay Jadeja and keeper NayanMongia in quick succession and it

was left to newcomer Kanitkar and Javagal Srinath to see them home.

I had no pressure. Azhar hadasked me to play each ball accordingto its merit and I knew we could win if

we kept our nerve. I just wanted toscore from every ball, Kanitkarecalls.

It was down to the last over, andwith three needed from two balls, Ka

nitkar took guard. Saqlain Mushtaq a bowler who, with Muttiah Muralith-aran, saved off-spin from extinction had the ball. The ball pitched between middle-and-leg and Kanitkaslog-swept it. It was a bit uppish but isailed out of the reach of the mid

wicket fielder. A boundary! The players rushed in and India

had snatched victory from the jaws odefeat. That win brought instanfame for me. I have talked about it somuch. I will try to keep it short thistime. Srinath was batting along withme on the other end. He told me wha-tever happens just dont miss theball. So the only plan was to watchthe ball and make a good connection

with the bat. I wasnt looking for a

boundary or six or anything like that. was just telling myself to watch thball, and the rest is history, he ends

Period drama Mad Menscooped the top honour atthe 60th Emmy Awards inLos Angeles on Sunday as

politics took centrestage at theUS television industrys annualequivalent to the Oscars.

The critically acclaimed cableseries about the workings of aNew York advertising agency inthe early 1960s was named out-standing drama series at a star-

    studded ceremony at the NokiaTheatre.

However the other big winnersof the evening were two political-ly themed productions: the ac-claimed historical drama John

Adams about the second presi-dent of the United States and Re-count about the contested 2000election.

The two Hollywood heartthrobs, who have

We both badly want a particular role and neitheris backing down, News.com.au quoted Clooney ashaving told a friend.

For Pitt, landing the role of Henry Higgins would bea dream come true, as he has been fascinated by thestory since he was a child, and he has even gone so faras to tell Clooney to back down and give the role tohim.

The Troy star is so enthusiastic about the moviethat he wants his wife actress Angelina Jolie to playthe part of Eliza Doolittle.

But Clooney has no intentions of backing down, ashe too is eager to land the role.

Its sort of become an intense competition be-tween us now and it just keeps escalating. For now

    Ilearnt today that giving ad-

vice is not easy and it has avery prolonged effect on peo-ple. I discovered this when I

got a call from a crazed fan in themiddle of the night, waking mefrom my slumber.

In the serial Kana Kaanum Ka-langal, I play the role of a schoolteacher who gives light-hearted,value-based advice to students.People of all ages like them andappreciate me for the same.Once, at around 1 a.m., I got acall from a guy. It took me some

time to realise that there was so-meone on the other line as I washalf asleep. He repeatedly askedif he was talking to the right per-son. Later, when I confirmed it,he told me that he was a diehardfan of mine and that everyone inhis family liked my comedy andthe small anecdotes I gave.

I was really annoyed that he

was telling me all this at such atime. But, I didnt lose my pa-tience and asked him what he

wanted, to which he replied, Ad-vice me on something rightnow. I was totally taken abackby the fact that an almost crazyman was calling me in the mid-dle of the night asking me toshower him with immediate ad-vice.

I told him not to disturb peoplewho are asleep, especially in themiddle of the night. He laughedout loud and hung up. But I was

awake for the rest of the night, wondering how I had affectedhim so much that he had to callat such unearthly hours for thesake of a silly advice. Only thendid I realise the power of my rolein that serial. This is one of themost unforgettable incidents ofmy life.
