You can liken it to that small book store that holdsits own against the super stores.

All of 300-sq-feet and situated on Fourth Ave-nue in Anna Nagar, where new restaurants keep

mushrooming every week, House of Biryani is thesmall store that every one loves, the meat-eaters thatis. From the time it was set shop in 2005, it has been afavourite haunt not just for the average joe but alsosome high profile politicians and even owners of fa-mous restaurants that you can find in travellersguides.

K.Micheal Raj, who owns and runs the House ofBiryani now, joined the eatery when it launched in2005 as a cashier. Preet Bindra, an enterprising leatherdealer, was the person who launched the store. Dur-ing his trade travels to Ambur, he was quite impressedby the reputation for original Ambur Biryani, a spe-cialised preparation of the local muslims there. Thebiryani has a distinct taste and is cooked in the dumstyle of preparation. Its accompaniment, the uber

    tasty yennai kathirikai (roughly trans-

lates to oily brinjal but tastes better than itsounds), made Bindra see a businessplan.

Though the initial plans were for start-ing a Punjabi dhaba, we somehow feltthat a pure Biriyani store would click.

And we were right, recalls Micheal. Bin-dra brought a Muslim cook from Ambur,Mehboo Basha, to help create the taste oforiginal Ambur Biryani. Basha hadmagic in his hands but his lungs were no

good. A chronic alcoholic, he died within a fewmonths of hooking a large clientele. But Micheal Raj

was a quick learner. He learnt the tricks of the tradequickly and when Bindra felt he has had enough of theeatery business, Micheal stepped up to buy the storeand run it himself. He had been saving money forthree years, setting aside a sizeable portion of the sala-ry that the Sardar paid him.

Today House of Biryani has become synonymouswith good taste. There are not enough chairs to seathis clients at times. But Micheal greets every one witha smile. There are of course his VIP customers. Carsthat swerve in front of his shop and the driver runs outcarrying a hot case. Its for Ayya, he says. Lok SabhaMP S.Thirunavukkarasar lives just a few buildingsaway. And House of Biryani supplies are regular forthe family.

Micheal plans to install air-conditioners in his ea-tery soon. And maybe even change the furniture.

House of Biryani undertakes orders for parties. You can

call Michael on his mobile at 98412 49881. ChickenBiryani costs Rs.60 while Mutton Biryani, available only

in the afternoons, cost Rs.75. There are also some killerkebabs for Rs.20.

Resigning a cushy job toserve food for the destitutemay look like the plot forart cinema. Not many

would opt for it.N. Krishnan from Madurai has

been serving three meals a dayfor more than 300 mentally-illdestitute persons for the last sev-en years. The 27-year-old formerrestaurant captain of Taj Hotelsin Bangalore quit his dream jobto take up social responsibility ofa very rare kind.

During my tenure in the hotelindustry I have served a plate offried rice for Rs.1,000 and seenmy guests eat a small portion anddiscard the rest. Now I serve peo-

ple for whom even the leftovers isa feast, he says.Life would have been different

for this youngster had he accept-ed the offer his firm provided to

work in Switzerland.Krishnan, who was ready to go

to Swiss, had gone to Madurai toseek the blessings of GoddessMeenakshi along with his family. On the way to the temple he sawan old man eating his own faeces.Shocked, he bought a pack ofidlies and gave to the man. Againin the noon he went back to thesame old man with a pack of curdrice. The man had eaten everyth-ing without uttering a single

    word.

If he had said thank you, I would have forgotten the inci-dent. But his silence stirred me.

After a weeks time, I made up mymind to serve homeless and re-signed my job.

After reaching Madurai, Krish-nan has told his parents that he

was on a three-month holidaythere. He started searching formentally-ill persons and provid-ed them with breakfast and lunch

with the money he had saved. Buthe couldnt keep it a secret forlong. His parents soon came toknow about everything. They hadtried convincing him to go backto work. But Krishnan did notoblige them. He took them along

with him to see what he was ac-tually doing.

    His parents were surprised to

see what their son did. Touchedby what they saw, they promisedto provide him food until theirlast breath.

Krishnan now has a roomsponsored by like-minded per-sons that he uses as kitchen. As-sisted by six others, he preparesthree meals a day and distributesthe food in an Omni van spon-sored by LIC officials. I am veryparticular that I will not give foodto beggars. Beggars will always bechoosers as they will never eatfood without side dish. I servefood to mentally-ill people

whom cannot distinguish between food and garbage.

    Last year, Krishnan was award-

ed the Real Heroes Award byCNN-IBN in collaboration withReliance Industries.

Krishnan has so far rehabilitat-ed 45 destitute people and helpedto arrange for the adoption of 26kids given birth by women on theroad. He has also performed lastrites for 160 unclaimed bodies.

Apart from serving food, he alsodoes hairdressing for the home-less. Though Krishnan startedserving one person, it has now ex-tended to more than 300 persons. In order to organise the works hedoes, he has formed a trustnamed Akshaya.

Though the initial days weredifficult, from 2003 I started re-

ceiving sponsors. Per day it willcost Rs.12,000 to prepare threemeals a day. The trust has spon-sors for 25 days in a month now.

With the fund provided by SudhaMurthy of Infosys foundation,Mukesh Ambani of Reliance andTVS Groups, the trust has boughtthree-acre land in the outskirts ofMadurai recently.

In future I want to replacethese hapless people from theroadsides and give them a safeplace to stay.

Krishnan can be reached [email protected] or9843319933.

Mahatma Gandhis belong-ings may at last be re-turning to where theybelong and all must

stand up and bow for Vijay Mal-

lya for being such a good philan-thropist. But in all this milieu ofthe Delhi High Court injunctionand American Justice Depart-ments enquiry into the validity ofthe auction, one should not for-get the common Indian whocame out and supported whole-heartedly the cry from Gandhisgreat grandson, Tushar Gandhi,to save Bapus belongings.

Within a week, Tushars Ma-hatma Gandhi Account Fund,04200100021002, Bank of Baroda,Vile Parle (West), Mumbai re-

ceived over Rs. three lakh, withcontributions ranging from Rs. 10to a few thousands. The only bigsum (Rs. one lakh) came from an

unknown patron. While making his pledge, Tush-ar, who runs the Mahatma Gand-hi Foundation in Mumbai, promised to return any unusedamount to the donors. Though atedious task, Tushar says he hasstarted the work in right earnest. We are trying to identify thenames of the donors and will getin touch. Anybody who has thedeposit slip can approach us andwe will try to hand over the mon-ey, he says. I collected the mon-ey for one particular goal andwhen it was not needed I think Iam obliged to return it. But I mustadmit a lot of other ideas arepouring in.

Elaborating on the options, hesays: The amount could be used

for some other charitable pur-pose and issues present in mod-ern India that might have beenclose to the great mans heart. But Tushar is not willing to takethe moral responsibility and says:In a weeks time I want to findout most of the donors and tryhanding the money back but ifthey refuse we can look into otheroptions. I am indebted to everyIndian for his or her support.

Completely appalled by the go-vernments role in the wholematter, Tushar says: Their han-dling of the situation has beenamateurish and shows the confu-sion and opportunism that runsthrough the power corridors in

Delhi. It was a proverbial miraclethat Mallya got it for us but thegovernments one-sided ap-proach of trying to stop the auc-tion without any basis wouldhave never worked.

He now wants to take the cru-sade to the next level and pres-surise the government to comeout with an ordinance that willprohibit transaction on articlesrelated to Indian history in anycorner of the world. An ordi-nance is a must to stop such trad-ing of our national heritage. Theinternational community shouldknow we are serious about it. Inmy personal capacity, I wouldeven lobby to get the Kohinoor

back but I dont trust any Indiangovernment to go anywhere nearthat.

The prospect of a cooperativefund pledged to bid back the her-itages also doesnt seem attrac-tive to him. I dont want to bethe lone crusader on this frontand I wont be happy to buy thesethings back.

This auction has also set thebenchmark high and from nowonwards the bids will be outlan-dish. Without proper backing itsnot possible to generate suchcash, he adds.

Tushar had earlier landed introuble when, in 2001, he handeda U.S.-based licensing company,

CMG Worldwide, the sole cmercial right to use Gandname for $51,000 (about Rlakh) per year. He had defenhimself then saying: He ismy great grandfather. You candeny that. In that capacity Ihave the right to grant such mission. All 54 Gandhi famembers have that right. Tprobably approached me sinam more in the public eye.opposition forced him to bout and return the two chegiven to him by CMG.

He seems to have learnt a blesson and has decided to away from any controversy time round.

The auction of Gandhisbelongings might have gotmuch attention and news

space, but what manydont know is that even thecommon man raised an

amount to buy them back. Now, Mahatmas greatgrandson plans to return it

    Money not spent

As the world gawks inastonishment at the

enormous US$ 1.8 mil-lion paid by Vijay Mallyafor a few earthly posses-

sions of Mahatma Gand-hi, the man himselfmight be laughing so-mewhere up if we are tobelieve in the concept ofhell and heaven.

As critics and scholarsgo over each other tofind a possible frown inBapus face for the mate-rialistic hankering overhis properties, oneshould essentially notforget that he was a ba-nia himself. Books onhim, particularly one by

Anu Bandyopadhyayacalled Bahuroopee Gand-hi, has a chapter on

Gandhiji as an auctio-neer. The chapter quoteshim as saying: I am abania and there is nolimit to my greed. He al-so writes: I have seennothing wrong aboutthese auctions. They setup a healthy rivalry andare innocent methods ofevoking the generousimpulse in man or wom-an for a noble cause.

There are instancesthat show that whiletravelling to England for

the fourth time as a deckpassenger, one of hismany friends bestowedupon him an expensiveshawl worth Rs. 700.Gandhi auctioned it forRs. 7,000 and says: Thatis all that a sole repre-

hensive of the poor cando. From the number ofshawls presented to himby his friends he couldhave run a shop, he adds.He used all such moneyfor Harijan upliftment.

The book also narratesthat once in Calcutta therich Zamindars offeredhim all the niceties of the

world but on every occa-sion Gandhi gave hispersonal belongings tothe highest bidder, saying: Dont you thinkthat in auctioning thingsI am belittling the love

    with which they are be-

ing given. I cannot affordto carry these caskets

with me. For, I carry notrunk with me, nor have Iany provision in the ash-ram to keep them.

He understood the val-ue of money and theneed for it for the down-trodden. Once, he rec-orded a speech God isTruth to a gramophonecompany. In half anhour, he made Rs. 65,000and donated it to HarijanFund.

    Brain sur-gery for

    weightloss? Carol

Poe, 60, mother of two is onlythe second person in the USto undergo deep brain stim-ulation for weight loss aftertrying everything from dietsto having her stomach sta-pled.

Last month, she tookpart in a clinical trial at

West Virginia Universityhospital, in which neuro-surgeons drilled into herbrain and used electricity

to control her feelings ofhunger and satisfac-

tion. Poes story willbe told onABCtelevi-sions Nightline pro-gram on Monday,March 9.Dr Julian Bailes,

chairman of West VirginiaUniversitys department of neu-rosurgery, said Poe was a goodcandidate for the radical treat-ment. This is a frontier ofmedicine...to be able to gen-erate tiny pulses of electricityin these deep nuclei of the

brain, and to see what ef-fect they may have on

behaviour, includingin this case the beha-viour of eating and the is-sue of uncontrolled appetite,he said. Bailes said that the West

Virginia University hospital was theonly one in the United States, andthe only centre he knew of world-

wide, using the deep brain stimula-tion technique specifically on obesepatients. He said the first patientunderwent surgery in November2008. The second, Poe, took place inFebruary. Poe was awake during thethree-hour surgery, in which wirescarrying an electrical impulse wereinserted into her brain in the region

where the stomach is controlled, and linked to two pacemaker de-vices implanted in her chest. Thevoltage going into her brain isturned up slowly over futuremonths to give Poe the sensation offeeling full.

We hope her sensation is a sen-sation of satiety, a sensation of full-ness, a lack of compulsion toconsume excess calories, Bailestold Nightline. Poe told Nightlineshe had already lost three pounds. When I eat, I get full faster. I justdont have the cravings like Iused to have, she said.

Poe, who weighed230 pounds beforethe surgery, said thatat her heaviest she

May I reassure you that the organising committee (CW Games) and government of India are com-mitted to provide an absolutely safe and secure environment for athletes, officials and visiting

dignitaries during the Commonwealth Games. I appeal to you to have full confidence in our preparationsand stand united to defeat any attempt to destabilise global camaraderie and goodwill.

IOA chief Suresh Kalmadis e-mail to all participating nations of the 2010 Delhi Games

Sachin Tendulkar has been ruledout of the fourth One-Day Inter-national against New Zealand inHamilton on Wednesday, boost-

ing the home sides hopes of turningtheir fortunes around. India are 2-0up in the five-match series after thesecond game was abandoned dueto rain and a win in Hamilton wouldseal a series win.

Star batsman Tendulkar hit a bril-liant 163 in Christchurch in leadingIndia to a massive total of 392 forfour in a comprehensive 58-run vic-tory on Sunday. The Little Masterretired hurt with a bruised abdomenand Indian management confirmedon Tuesday he will miss the Hamilton

    game.

Uncertainty loomsThey said it was uncertain if he

would play in the series finale inAuckland at the weekend, althoughhe is believed likely to return for thethree-Test series starting next week.New Zealand coach Andy Moles saidthe absence of Tendulkar in Hamiltonwould be bittersweet. Its great forus hes out but for the cricket lovers itsa sad loss, Moles said. Tendulkar is ex-pected to be replaced by Rohit Sharma, while pace bowler Ishant Sharma mayreturn to the side, subject to a fitnesstest, after suffering a shoulder injurywhile fielding in a Twenty20 match lastmonth.

The talented Indian batting lineupstill includes Virender Sehwag, YuvrajSingh, captain Mahendra Singh Dhoniand Suresh Raina, all of whom have tor-mented the often wayward New Zealandattack.

Hard nuts to crackNew Zealand vice-captain Brendon

    McCullum admitted all the momentum

was with India but his side aredesperate to get back into

the series. We know nowthe only option for us is towin, McCullum told re-porters. Weve got to dosomething pretty specialto turn it around.

New Zealand havedropped young pacemanTim Southee after beingbashed for none for 105off 10 overs in Christchurch.

New Zealand have lost theirtop performing seam bowler

Ian Butler to a thigh injurysuffered in the last match. But

the good news is that captain

Daniel Vettori is back after mis-sing the last game to be with hiswife for the birth of their first child.

All-rounder Ewen Thompson, yet tomake his ODI debut, has been broughtinto the 12-man squad. New Zealandopening bowler Kyle Mills, usually oneof New Zealands best performers, ad-mits he must turn his form around af-ter being battered by India. Ive letthe side down in the last couple ofgames.

I havent started off as well as I nor-mally have, Mills said. These gamesthey seem to have got on top of meand I do feel like theyre targeting mea little bit, so I have to try to stay astep ahead and the responsibility fallson me as leader of the bowling

attack. In the three one-dayers against In-dia, Mills has captured only threewickets at an average cost of 57.60runs, while conceding 7.20 runs anover. Another heavy scoring match isanticipated at Napier, with the pitchexpected to offer little for the bow-lers.

Why is it that no unitmember is ready to tell whatRavaana is going to be like?Abhishek:Because, he (Raava-

na) is not a cool guy to mess with(bursts into laughter).Aishwarya: I will answer

that its because of a few rea-sons. The film is director ManiRatnams dream project and atough one, too. Its not a mod-ern-day Ramayana, but Manisown interpretation of the epicset in todays time. So, all castand crew need to focus intenselyon their roles to understand thecharacter and interpret it on-

screen. There must not be anyinterferences. Besides, its notthe right time to promote thefilm we are still shooting for it.If we talk to media about it now, there are ample chances that

journos will misinterpret the en-tire thing and, hence, it will send

wrong vibes to the audience. And an additional reason for menot talking to the press is be-cause of my tight schedule. If youever work for Mani in future, you

will understand he keeps hisshooting schedules so tight-knitthat you can hardly get time torelax on sets. Even our sleep istime-bound while shooting. Then, I am playing Sita in both

Tamil and Hindi versions, whileother actors will differ in the twoversions. So, I am undergoingdouble pressure and after longhours of lights, camera, sound, action I feel totally drained out.

But, despite your tightschedule, you made it to theDelhi 6 premiere andFilmfare Awards.Aishwarya Thats what love-

makes you do, dear. I wanted tobe with Abhishek my best paland hubby to encourage himon the release of his new film.

And, Filmfare Awards is the Os-car of Bollywood. So, I reallycouldnt afford to miss on that.

So is Aishwarya playing Sitaand Abhishek Raavana?Aishwarya: My name in the

film is not Sita (at least, as ofnow). But the character I play

will have traits of Sita.Abhishek: Yes, I am playing

    Raavana.

In Ramayana, Sita is faithfulonly to Ram. But here at theshoots, we are seeing Sitadancing with Raavana.Abhishek: Actually, I bribed

the scriptwriter so that I am al-lowed to romance my wife on-screen, no matter what roles weplay.

Aishwarya: On a more seriousnote, I told you its a Mani Rat-nam film and to know the truthaudience will have to wait for therelease of the film.

This is your sixth filmtogether. Any complaintsagainst each other as co-actors?Abhishek: Sachch bolke biwi

ke haathon pithna nehi hai!(laughs aloud) No honestly, nocomplaints. Ash is the best co-actor one can ever get. She is oneof the biggest stars of Bollywoodand a name in Hollywood. Still, she is so down-to-earth. Shemakes her co-actor comfortable

from Scene 1, irrespective of thefact whether he is a star or a new-comer.Aishwarya: Abhishek and I

have never been paired the con-ventional way as in, as man and

wife onscreen. Starting fromDhai Akshar Prem Ke, where we

were pretending as husband-wife, to Kuchh Na Kaho, where Iam someone elses wife and stillfall in love with him, or Umrao

Jaan , where its a failed love sto-ry, and Sarkar Raj, where he is amarried man, we hardly got to beromantic on screen. Even in Gu-ru, its all about the protagonistslife story. I really wish someoneto cast us as a romantic pair.

Hopefully, thats going to hap-pen in Rajeev Menons Dhun.

We heard that Dhun is aremake of Amitabh-Jayastarrer Abhimaan?Abhishek: The script is some-

what similar, but its not a re-make. How can one even think ofremaking a masterpiece likeAb-himaan! Its a musical love story.

Abhimaan is often said to bebased on the real-life storyof Amitabh and JayaBachchan Abhishek: Its surprising that

the media knows more about myparents than I do.

Aishwarya: I dont think itsgood to mix reel and real life.

How much chances are therefor an Abhimaan-likesituation in your life?Abhi-Ash: Zero percent.Abhishek: Let me clarify, we

are all grown-ups and hardcoreprofessionals. Be it pa or ma, orme or Ash, we have learnt to keepour work outside before gettinghome. There is no competitionand cant be. We are all differentindividuals with our respectivestyle of work.Aishwarya:We are all very se-

cure about our professional aswell as personal life.

Arent you a little upsetabout not getting a PadmaShri like Ash?

Abhishek: Not at all. I donthink I have done anything to dserve that honour so far. On second thoughts, I have got Padma Shri whatever belongto me is Ashs and vice-versa. Sher award is mine as well.

So, are you happy for her?Abhishek: I wish I could ex

plain my happiness for her. I amso proud that my girl has got thhonour she deserves for years.Aishwarya: Abhishek is m

source of inspiration. He is a

ways so supportive. Wheneveram confused and dont knowhat to do, I look at him and hsolves the duality in me like magic. He is the real Padma Shri anIm his Padma Shrimat(giggles).

There was once a guy who suffered from cancer... a cancer that couldnt be treated. Hewas 18 years old and he could die anytime. All his life, he was stuck in his house beingtaken cared by his mother. He never went outside but he was sick of staying home andwanted to go out for once. So he asked his mother and she gave him permission. He walked down his block and found a lot of stores. He passed a CD store and lookedthrough the front door for a second as he walked. He stopped and went back to look intothe store. He saw a young girl about his age and he knew it was love at first sight. Heopened the door and walked in, not looking at anything else but her. He walked closerand closer until he was finally at the front desk where she sat.

She looked up and asked, "Can I help you?" she smiled and he thought it was the mostbeautiful smile he has ever seen before. He said, "Uh... Yeah... Umm... I would like tobuy a CD." He picked one out and gave her money for it.

"Would you like me to wrap it for you?" she asked, smiling her cute smile again. Henodded and she went to the back. She came back with the wrapped CD and gave it tohim. He took it and walked out of the store. He went home and from then on, he went tothat store everyday and bought a CD, and she wrapped it for him. He took the CD homeand put it in his closet. He was still too shy to ask her out and he really wanted to but he

couldnt. His mother found out about this and told him to just ask her.So the next day, he took all his courage and went to the store. He bought a CD like hedid everyday and once again she went to the back of the store and came back with itwrapped. He took it and when she wasnt looking, he left his phone number on t he deskand ran out...

RRRRRING!The mother picked up the phone and said, "Hello". It was the girl! She asked for the

boy and the mother started to cry and said, "You dont know? He passed away yester-day..." The line was quiet except for the cries of the boys mother. Later during the day, shewent into the boys room as she wanted to remember him. She thought she wouldstart by looking at his clothes. So, she opened the closet and was face-to-face with pilesof unopened CDs. She was surprised to find them there and picked one up, sat down onthe bed and opened it. Inside, there was a CD and as she took it out of the wrapper, apiece of paper fell out.

His mother picked it up and started to read it.It said, "Hi. I think you are really cute. Do u want go out with me? Love, Jacelyn"She opened another one.Another paper, similar to the first one, fell out. It said, "Hi. I think you are really cute.

Do u want go out with me? Love, Jacelyn."Senthil Jayachandran, Wipro

    I drift,

All alone, dreary and desolate,Amidst empty words and broken promises,Forgotten deeds and shattered dreams.Soothing words no longer whisper in my ears,Hear the vultures call instead.Gentle touches no longer caress me,Instead, cruel hands drag me down.Fate has surrendered me to Despair.Thorns that bleed my heart and drink my soul,I have found.Thoughts that curse my mind and feed on my tears,I am left with.

Will you smile, to hear me cry? Will you laugh, to see me die?Victim of situations,Sacrifice, at the Altar of Society, I know not.Oh Sweet Agony!Leave me alone,Give me peace..
