    Big Story04

Tucked in a corner of Myla-pore is a family like no oth-

er, who attend the Sunday mass at a nearby church andmake a living out of mirudhan-gams.

Surprised? The legacy started atTanjore in the early twentiethcentury and has been carrieddown the generations and foundts way into modern Chennai in

1990s. Walk into Apparsaamy Koil Street (a lane adjacent toSaptaswara Musicals) in Myla-pore and ask for Johnsons Mi-rudhangam Kadai, and you aresure to be directed to a smallspace below one of the houses. A cluster of carved wood can befound lying around.

    Johnson, youngest of four

brothers, was the third person inthe family to set shop in Chennai.

The familys rst shop wasopened by his brother Guna in1991.

Right now, the extended fam-ily, including his brothers and in-laws, own six shops in the Myla-pore area.

Johnson says: We were alltrained by my dad and his broth-er. Before setting up the shops, we used to work from home.Johnson has 25 years of experi-ence in the eld even though he

set up his shop only a few yearsago.

    Rich legacy

The legacy of Johnson and hisbrothers date back to over a cen-tury ago to the shores of the RiverCauvery in Tanjore, where theroots of Carnatic music lay. Tra-ditionally, the family has becomesynonymous with manufacturing and repairing mirudhangams foran exalted list of musicians, in-cluding T.K. Murthy, Umayalpu-ram Sivaraman, Thiruchur

Narendran, Neyveli Narayananand Erode Nagaraj to name a few.

The materials for making theinstruments are bought fromTanjore. There are three kinds of animal skins used: cow, goat andbuffalo skins. Apart from these, the other important materialused is the kittangal a rice mix-ture. This makes the black in thecentre of the mirudhangam.

They accept custom orders anddesign mirudhangams according to the singers voice or their pref-erence. Some people buy the ba-

sic carved wood from Panruttiand bring it to us for the other

effects like adding the skins andthe black centre. When people

get used to the skins we providethey keep coming back to us.

Price listThe price of the mirudhangams

varies with size and ranges between Rs.3,000 for kids Rs.8,000 for professionals. Therare three grades of wood qualityand usually for bhajans and thelike, third quality wood is usedand for concerts rst quality ispreferred. Our labour chargesrange anywhere from Rs. 250 tRs.600 for repair work. For making the entire instrument, thecharge is xed at Rs.1800, sayJohnson.

    Apart from Mirudhangam, they

also do repair work for dholakand tabla.

Tishani Doshi doesnt quitematch the general perception of an author. You are most likely tomistake this 31-year-old writer, poet, journalist and dancer foran actor or model at rst sight.Born in Chennai to a Welshmother and an Indian father, shehad her education from QueensCollege and Johns Hopkins Uni- versity in the US.

Tishani was conferred theEric Gregory Award in 2001, which is awarded to poets, andher rst collection, Countries of the Body , won the 2006 For- ward Poetry Prize for best rstcollection. The opening poem,The Day We Went to the Sea, which is based on the 2004tsunami, won the 2005 BritishCouncil supported All India Poetry Competition.

Her most talked-about work, however, is her contri-bution to Muttiah Muralith-arans biography.

Besides, she has alsotrained in contemporary

    dance under the lateChandralekha.

Tishani on her career, experiences and future

    plans:Cricket connection

I had met Muralitharan inSri Lanka and his enthu-

siasm impressed me. I thenrealised that he hasnt been

given a fair share in the media.I wanted to know about racism

in cricket and he is one of thefew candidates. But Muralitha-ran proves to be a loveable crick-eter and a link between Ceylonand the Tamils.

In the biography I have cov-ered his childhood days and todo the same I travelled to SriLanka. I met his parents and

friends and also visited hisschool and learnt that he was thenaughtiest of all siblings.

He had spent his childhood ina boarding school with a brotherand his other two brothers stud-ied in day school. When I askedhis mother why she chose tosend Murali to boarding school, she said he was the naughtiest.

The biography will take sometime to come out. Muralitharan wants it to be released after heretires and I dont see that hap-pening any time soon as his ca-reer is on a high.

The Pleasure SeekersMy rst novel, The Pleasure

Seekers , should release in 2009 if things go well. It is a love story that involves three generations. It is a story about two children inthe 60s who are in love and how one of them travels to anothercountry for it. The story is very loosely based on the life of my parents. But it is ction.

Tishani, the dancerThe ve years that I spent

dancing became the most im-portant days of my life. After a casual meeting with Chandra-lekha, she asked me to join herand I did so. I was not a dancerbut I surrendered myself to herand working with her gave meimmense satisfaction. Chandra-lekha has always been a sourceof inspiration and I can say thatdancing has made me a better writer.

Future plansRight now I am working on thenal edit of the novel. Apartfrom this, my second collectionof poems is in the pipeline. I would still like to discover myself further and would love to do so-mething other than writing.

Why am I being urged touncover the meaning of life?Is it my plight? Or is it thecurse of being a writer?writes G.B. Prabhat in the

translation of his father G.S.Balakrishnans Tamil shortstory, One Stones Throw,One Thousand Droplets. The short story is one of the27 short stories that havebeen compiled andtranslated into English by

Prabhat called Intimate Moments and Other Stories . It is always special to read a bookauthored by a Tamil writer as their writing stylestands out distinctly from others. Take forexample, R.K. Narayanan, whose style can bedistinguished by a fan even if he just hears asingle sentence from one of his books.Intimate Moments, which is the rst story inthe book, takes the reader to a whole newlevel with subtle hints of irony and its well-written portrayal of divorce. The story revolves

around a sudden coincidental meeting of twopeople, who were once husband and wife.

There are other light reads with hints of

humour that make the readers think, likeHanuman the Fourth and The Night of MyDesire. Then there are those that talk aboutlifes realities like Feet of Clay and Violet. There are also stories that talk about peculiarcharacters in society, like Doting Diktats, whichis about a man who was extremely conservativeand always did the right things. Not only have the stories been well-translated,but the writers avour in each of the stories isleft intact. The writing ows smoothly, allowingthe reader to relate to each of the 27 stories. Some of the stories G.S. Balakrishnan writes areon himself and his family, which is new andquite surprising to read.Having a father who is a literary genius is botha gift and a problem, he says in the forword.Intimate Moments and Other Stories is a must-read for any one who wants to explore Indian

Tibetan antelope popularly known as Chiru, blue sheep,

wild Yak and many other rareand threatened species in thehigh-altitude Himalayan regionhave greater hope of survival withwildlife experts and armed forcesjoining hands for their conserva-

tion. A research project has beeninitiated by Wildlife Institute of In-dia (WII) in collaboration with for-est department of Jammu andKashmir, ITBP and Army in Chang-thang Wildlife Sanctuarys Chang-chenmo valley in Ladakh to identify threats and management issues forthe survival of these animals.

The idea is also to study the hab-itat characteristics and seasonalmovement patterns of these ungu-lates which are on the verge of ex-tinction due to massive destruction

of their habitat and hunting by poachers. For instance, wild Yak

presently exists only in the Chang-chenmo valley in Ladakh in the en-tire Himalayas and are rarely sighted says K Sankar, senior scien-tist at the Dehradun-based WII whoalong with his colleague GS Rawathas undertaken the four-year-study.In other areas in Himalayas, thebulky animals that weigh about1,000 kg and have long black hair with curved horns on their head aredomesticated and their breed is notpure. The wild gene of yak is thusvery important for future geneticstudies for diseases resistance etc.The study aims to evolve a long-term population and habitat mon-itoring protocol for Yak as other fau-na in the region, says Sankar. Out of shape wives beware! Married men arenow spending more on their looks to be-come trimmer, tter and sexier and in themeantime are also attracted to women withsimilar characteristics.

Health experts in the capital city are of theopinion that there is an increasing concernamong married men to look slimmer andsmarter, an obsession they attribute to theevolution of MNCs and increasing westernisa-tion of the Indian culture.

On the ip side, there has been ironically adownward shift in the ever so looks consciousIndian women as they generally get busy withtheir household affairs ignoring their looks, resulting in being out of shape.

Today, the prosperity among Indian menbegins at an early age, where they are slightly balding, condent, mature and wealthy. Atthis prime of their career, they are going for

Ilive with a group of women,

some working and some stu-dents, who are unanimously adamant on receiving gifts from

their boyfriends. What classies as agift varies of course.

What we wantOne of them, lets call her Sakina,

was visibly annoyed and in tearswhen she complained that despitecompleting almost a year with herboyfriend, he had not gifted her any-thing expensive.

Its not about how costly the pre-sent is. Its about saving up enoughmoney to buy me something that Ireally like, she sniffed. And thenthere is Ramya who will bring back asouvenir from each of her vacationsabroad to gift her out-of-station boy-friend and all she wants in return is aphone call or a visit from him.

I know he is working and a stu-dents life is easier, but I dont think it takes much time to SMS.Alsothere is Nalini who just wants to beleft alone. I come home extremely

stressed, more from the ofce gossipthan the workload itself. The lastthing I need is my boyfriend calling up to whine about his work or hisfamily.

    What they say

Why is it that women are forevedissatised with the gifts they getThe men have all the answers. Oneof them said, Whatever I get, itnever enough because a woman re-acts optimistically to a gift accord-ing to her mood.

And to the fact that they never cal when they are supposed to, anothersaid, I completely agree with thfact that SMSs should be replied tophone calls should be returned andall that. But if I do not, then I am justired! There is nothing more to it.

And Nalinis boyfriend respondedto her statement with, Women want everything. If I was the sort toignore her and give her all thspace she needed, I am an incon-siderate workaholic. If I ask how heday was and tell her how mine is, am a weepy romantic. Either way lose.

A fter a series of debacles, ForceIndia is slowly creeping back to win some respectability in theF1 circuit. The elder statesmanof the team, Giancarlo Fisichella, n-

Italy.Happy with his effort, Liuzzi said:

We tried to get a good set-up for therest of the test and the race in just acouple of weeks time, and I think wecan be happy with how it went. Racedrivers Adrian Suti and Fisichella areexpected to take over for the rest of the test sessions scheduled for thenext two days.

We had a difcult race in Hungary,

where the conditions were very hot. We had some problems with the gearbox and our strategies didnt work so-metimes, but we have to keep focusand keep moving forward, ItalianFisichella said about his home Grand

Prix. Scheduled for September 14, theItalian Grand Prix, where MichaelSchumacher had set a track record of 1:21.832m in 2003, is one of the fastestcircuits in the F1 calendar with very few hairpin turns, making it a driversdelight.

The Vijay Mallya-owned team areexpected to continue with their pro-gress and the chief technical ofcer of the team, Mike Gascoyne, alsoechoed Fisichellas view and eggedhis team to look forward. Adrain washonest enough to admit that he madea mistake at Hungary. Giancarlo did well and its a big bonus for us and Iam condent of a better showing atMonza, he said.

Grip levels are low at themoment, and the tyres we areusing are very hard for the con-ditions, but everyone has thesame issue so we will work overthe next days to optimise per-formance, he added.

Music legend Paul McCartney is to stage his rst ever concert in Israel next month, four decades after the Beatles were barred from playing there, he said on his website Thursday.

The former Beatles star will play a Friendship First concert in Tel Aviv onSeptember 25, as part of a series of one-off gigs in places he has never visited before.

Ive heard so many great things about Tel Aviv and Israel , but hearing is one thing andexperiencing it for yourself is another. We are planning to have a great time and a greatevening, he said.

We cant wait to get out there and rock. The Beatles drew up plans to play in Israel at the height of Beatlemania in 1965, butthey were cancelled after sponsors failed to raise enough money, and lawmakers voicedconcern that they might corrupt young Israeli minds.

McCartney also nearly performed in Israel in the late 1970s, when concerts with hispost-Beatles band Wings were cancelled due to problems with the venues, he said.

In January Israel apologized in letters to the two surviving members of the Beatles McCartney and drummer Ringo Starr and asked them to play at the nations 60thbirthday bash in May.

. The Tel Aviv concert will be staged in the citys Hayarkon Park. AFP
