Mrs. Parks, a 6th grade science teacher, asked herclass, "Which human body part increases to 10times its size when stimulated?"No one answered until little Mary stood up, angry, and said, "You should not be asking 6th graders aquestion like that! I'm going to tell my parents, andthey will go and tell the principal, and you'll getfired!" She then sat back down.Mrs. Parks ignored her and asked the questionagain,"Which body part increases to 10 times itssize when stimulated?"Little Mary's mouth fell open, and she said to thosearound her, "Boy, is she gonna get in big trouble!"The teacher continued to ignore her and said to theclass, "Anybody?"Finally, Billy stood up, looked around nervously, and said, "The body part that increases to 10 timesits size when stimulated is the pupil of the eye."Mrs. Parks said, "Very good, Billy."Then she turned to Mary and continued, "As foryou, young lady, I have three things to say:"First, you have a dirty mind.Second, you didn't read your homework. And third, one day you are going to be very, verydisappointed."

ALL THE NEWS THAT ISN’T THE NEWS
When I first found the Dominican Republic 30 years ago I found what became an amazing family of weird andwonderful expats that adopted me and really kind of raised me. They looked out for me and guided methrough the perils and pitfalls of life in the DR. They know who they are. Oh yeah, and some fun was had alongthe way! Well, in July, we lost one of those special people. Our beloved Photo Mike lost his battle to cancer - abattle he waged with so much spirit and good humour that we were all left in awe. He made it easy for us tosee him go through this. But that was Mike. Every struggle or hurdle was to be laughed at - he found humourin even some of the more daunting aspects of DR life. He was one of those rare stories of someone cominghere with very little and making it - maybe not in a financial aspect - but in terms of a life well-lived - Mike wasa true success story. As I’m writing this, my computer has reminded me that it’s Mike’s birthday and I don’twant to be writing this - I want to be sitting in a gringo bar on the Malecon or the beach buying Mike birthdaygrandes and being entertained by his endless stories. Stories that were often not just told but acted out.Stories that made your stomach hurt with laughter. Stories that often taught you how to live life as an expaton the North Coast or just how to live life. I will miss Mike’s stories. I will miss Mike’s spirit. I will miss Mike. And to honour him, I will try to live up to the legacy of humour and spirit and a life well-lived. And every time Iraise a glass I will toast Mike and smile! And to leave this on a happier note my partner in Costambar Monthly, Colin, wanted to recount an oh sotypical Photo Mike story:I need to go back to yesteryear, when the iconic gringo hangouts like Uncle Dicks (Sam’s Bar), The Boar House(No Name Bar) and Yellowbeards were thriving.Photo Mike was often seen on beaches doing a photo shoot of mainly Brits getting married or maybe having abeer in one of the bars after work. He was also the founder and self-proclaimed captain of the English cricketteam. Positioned as wicket keeper our captain led us through many defeats when we played the Colonials(England vs the rest of the World) once a month at the Star Hills polo field. We were mainly defeated by lackof numbers, we only had about 6 in our team and one of them was Fat Pat but we had a lot of fun trying toteach the Colonials a proper sport. Mike at that time was co-owner of one of the bars in town so he coulddrown his sorrows at cost. These are the stories we all have. And these are the stories we will all share over and over again for years tocome.I won’t say Rest In Peace - that wasn’t Mike’s way. Wherever he is, he’s being entertaining or getting up tountold shenanigans. So to all of you who knew Photo Mike, and even those who didn’t, I say go forward andlive life boldly. That’s what Mike did, that’s what we should all do. That’s what he would have wanted. Andlaugh - laugh a lot!! Even when it seems you can’t.Adios Mike and gracias for being a part of my life for so many many years! Save a place for me at your tableand keep the beer cold!
Next month we will resume our regular hearsay and North Coast updates. Thanks for indulging me this month.
CM’S DEFINITELY NOT THE NEWS!Because rumour, gossip, hearsay and anecdotes are just sooo much more fun!
This page is basically tidbits about life here on the North Coast. Things that affect us. Things that amuse us. Things that annoy us.None of it is hard core journalism. It’s what we’ve heard, seen and experienced. Feel free to email us [email protected] with updates, clarifications, corrections or whatever. And keep in mind - we are not claiming that this is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth! It’s just a glimpse ofwhat’s happening and sometimes a bit of fun! Don’t take it too seriously!
Don’t forget to check out our website at costambarmonthly.com and our Facebook page@costambarmonthly to keep up with all the latest news that isn’t news! Except to us!
