Creating an effective governance model for your farm doesn’t have to be difficult! Come along to our post-conference masterclass to demystify the challenges of governing your farm and develop a successful farm that profits you today and into the future.PLUS: When you register for the post-conference masterclass, you will receive a complimentary ticket to Central District Field Days, a highlight of NZ AgriFood Investment Week.

Governance and Succession Planning Masterclass 16 March 2017 | 9.00-12.30There is no doubt that NZ farm businesses must continue to evolve in order to maintain relevance in the global food system. Farm ownership structures and management systems are becoming increasingly complex as the seemingly incomprehensible demands of globalisation force primary producers to be better, bigger, branded (or buggered!). This masterclass aims to challenge some of the common beliefs around farm governance and strategy and offer participants alternative options to ensure that a governance function adds value, not cost, to farming businesses.

• Addressing different governance models and understanding what situations need a board (spoiler alert - many farms don’t!)

• Governance verses management and planning• Strategy verses values and culture - or "culture eats strategy for breakfast"• Putting compliance in the right context• Governance tools verses governance systems• Project Governance - a stepping-stone to the adoption of formal governance systems:

Succession planning exampleFacilitator: Tom Skerman, Economic Development Manager, Hawkes Bay Regional Council

A 2016 Nuffield Scholar, Tom currently works as the Economic Development Manager for Hawke’s Bay Regional Council. In addition to farming business interests he has practised Law and also worked as a commercial development manager for the Maori Trustee, Te Tumu Paeroa. Tom is also a director and co-owner of farm financial software business, Figured, and is an independent director of a foreign-owned NZ forestry and commercial property company.
