Technology in the Health and Physical Education Setting

Although many people assume Health and Physical Education is all fun and games, there are important things to learn

To be able to learn in the Health and Physical Education environment there are different technology tools one can use

These pieces of equipment can be things on the computer or something as small as a stopwatch.

In the following slides you will learn about some products that should be put to use in our classrooms

Building Endurance

Building one’s endurance is not as easy as just running out side everyday for minutes straight; it takes knowledge, commitment, and variety to have good endurance

What is endurance? the ability for a human to exert himself for a

long period of time, as well as have the ability to resist, withstand, recover from, and have immunity to physical trauma, wounds, or fatigue.

Stopwatch and Pedometer

Everyone knows one of the best ways to build endurance is to run

However one should be able to run for different time periods at different levels of speed

Using a stop watch and a pedometer is the best way to measure your speed and time running

They are small and some are even inexpensive, especially when sold in mass amounts

What to do  For how long  Intensity (1-10)

Warm up at 4 mph pace

 5 minutes  3.5

Jog at 5.5 mph pace  4 minutes  5

Jog at 5.8 mph pace  8 minutes  6

Jog at 5.5 mph pace  8 minutes  5

Jog at 5.8 mph pace  8 minutes  6

Jog at 5.5 mph pace  4 minutes  5

 Cool down  5 minutes  3.5

 Total Workout Time:  42 minutes

Pedometers are used to count the number of steps a person takes; this tool is a

great way to show students how far they have walked and to also compare their number to other students.

A stopwatch is used to measure the time spent doing an activity. It is a great way to accurately time yourself and push yourself to get better

results each time.

The Wii Fit Video games have overwhelmingly taken over many

children’s life and have even prevented them from doing other activities; such as building their endurance

Investing in a Nintendo Wii is a great way to introduce and get children involved in building their stamina. The Wii's motion-sensor controls give children a workout while they have fun.

Nintendo also offers the Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus, two games designed for the purpose of working out with the use of a television.

The Wii is the real deal. When you hit a tennis ball, you can feel the impact of the ball on the racket. When you steel a car or bike in Mario Kart, you feel the vibrations of a crash or the acceleration.

A Step Machine

Step machines are used for muscular endurance due to the combination of endurance and strength training.

This piece of equipment forces the muscles to adapt to an increased workload. Each step or repetition causes your muscles to contract and then relax.

They also come in all shapes and sizes, so they can be flexible when using them in a classroom setting

Multi-Stage Fitness Test

Also known as the bleep test, this product is used to estimate a persons VO2max (maximum oxygen uptake)

The test involves running continuously between two points that are 20 meters apart from side to side. These runs are synchronized with a pre-recorded audio tape, CD, or laptop software, which plays “beeps” at set intervals. As the test proceeds, the interval between each successive beep reduces, forcing the person to increase their speed over the course of the test

This test is a great way to increase endurance and can be easily used in the gymnasium where Physical Education is taking place

In conclusion… Over all I believe that these products would

benefit our students by promoting and enhancing their health and physical traits

Even though some are rather expensive, they are worth every penny Products such as a stopwatch and pedometer are

inexpensive and should be bought in mass amounts for our classes

On the other hand the entire school can share the more expensive products such as the “bleep test”, step machine, and Wii
