Well, the Royal Agriculture Winter Fair is over for another year, and by all accounts it was very successful. The Fair was also a great success for Equine Canada. With our booth moved to a different location, we had a greater response from the public this year. The staff and I appreciated everyone who stopped by to say hi, ask a question or get some information. The Equine Canada Board took the opportunity to meet face-to-face for a day and half during the Royal to catch up on Equine Canada business. I also know that Sport Council and a few of our disciplines were able to do the same.

In recent weeks, the Board has been reviewing the reorganization plan for the administration structure of Equine Canada, which was one of the priorities tasked to our new CEO, Eva Havaris, in her first term. She has done an excellent job of developing a revised structure that, when fully executed in the New Year, will allow us to implement our recently developed strategic plan and enhance our customer service. The Board and I support this progressive plan and realize that change will not always be easy, but with a little understanding, these modifications will put our organization in a better position to accomplish our goals and those that we set for the future. Eva will be communicating this structural plan more broadly in 2015.

President s Message

I have just returned from the FEI General Assembly, Regional Group IV and PAEC meetings held in the city of Baku in Azerbaijan. One of the key functions of the meeting was to elect a new president as HRH Princess Haya has stepped down after completing two very successful four year terms. Her passion for equestrian sport and the FEI family will be sadly missed by all. Her legacy and successes leading the FEI will be felt long into the future. I am very proud to have had the opportunity to represent Equine Canada to the FEI under Princess Haya’s leadership.

In a strong show of unity, five candidates were in the running for the prestigious position of FEI president. Showing unanimous support, the assembly elected Ingmar De Vos of Belgium as the new FEI president in only one round of voting. For more information on Ingmar De Vos, please see the article about him in this issue.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season, and I look forward to seeing some of you again in March at our annual convention in Gatineau, Que.

BelGiuM’s Ingmar De Vos Will lead eQuestrian GOverninG BOdy, Fédération EquEstrE intErnationalE

On December 14, 2014, Ingmar De Vos was elected as the new president to take charge and lead the world governing body of equestrian sport, the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), by an overwhelming majority during the first round of voting

held during the FEI General Assembly in Baku (AZE) December 11–14.

De Vos, 51, who held the position of Secretary General of the FEI since May 2011, swept the vote earning 98 votes out of a possible 131. He took over the reins as FEI President at the conclusion of the FEI General Assembly for a four-year term, and is eligible for re-election for up to three consecutive terms. He resigned as Secretary General as soon as he took over the Presidency and will appoint an interim Secretary General to take over the role until a permanent replacement is found.

Outgoing President HRH Princess Haya, declared the election results before close to 350 delegates representing 91 Federations, stakeholders, sponsors and international media which drew prolonged applause evoking an emotional response from De Vos, “I’m really very honoured and overwhelmed by this enormous support, and I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for your confidence. Baku will be in my memory forever.

“Elections are always difficult, as it splits a little bit the family, but I guarantee that I will be the president of all of you, I will serve all the members of our community and I will work very hard to keep this unity.”

When declaring his candidacy, De Vos clearly stated in a letter to national federations that he wouldn’t campaign for the position, although he did provide an elegant, passionate and concise manifesto built on five pillars that will now underpin his principals as he pilots the organization into their next chapter:

In the next 10 years, De Vos envisions a future where the FEI enables the transition for horse sport to the very pinnacle of top sport, and where the international federation is universally upheld as the leader in good governance, and is a strong example of how to preserve the integrity in sport and the welfare of athletes (both human and equine). He foresees a time in which equestrian sport’s unequivocal success, reach and appeal make our place in the Olympic program an absolute certainty.

about De VosThe newly elected president holds degrees in political science, business administration and international and European law, and started his career as an advisor to the Belgian Senate. He joined the Belgian Equestrian Federation as managing director in 1990, and held the additional role of Secretary General from 1997 to 2011.

During his time at the Belgian national federation, De Vos was chef de mission for the Belgian Equestrian Team at all FEI World Equestrian Games™ from 1990 to 2010 and at several Olympic Games. He was also Secretary General of the European Equestrian Federation from 2010, the year the organisation was formed, until 2011, when he joined the FEI.

The other candidates standing for election were Pierre Durand (FRA), Pierre Genecand (SUI), John McEwen (GBR) and Ulf Helgstrand (DEN). Helgstrand withdrew his candidacy before the vote, and a sixth candidate, Javier Revuelta del Peral (ESP), withdrew from the election process in November.

How tHe Votes were cast Ingmar De Vos (BEL) 98, Pierre Durand (FRA) 21, Pierre Genecand (SUI) 6, John McEwen (GBR) 6. A total of 131 voting boxes were distributed to national federation delegates, with 131 valid ballots cast. A total of 91 National Federations were present for the vote and there were 40 proxies.

The FEI, founded in 1921, is the world governing body for Jumping, Dressage & Para-Equestrian Dressage, Eventing, Driving & Para-Driving, Endurance, Vaulting and Reining, in which last year alone 3,557 events were held around the world representing over 150% growth since 2003.

The FEI, which is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), celebrated 100 years of equestrian sport in the Olympic movement at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The FEI also became one of the first International Federations to govern and regulate international para sport, alongside its seven able-bodied disciplines, when Para-Equestrian Dressage joined its ranks in 2006.

The FEI now governs all international competitions for Para-Equestrian Dressage, which has been a regular fixture at the Paralympic Games since 1996 and joined the FEI World Equestrian Games™ in 2010.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II today became the first recipient of the FEI Lifetime Achievement award in recognition of her leading role as supporter of equestrian sport throughout her reign as British monarch.

The award was presented to Her Majesty by FEI President HRH Princess Haya at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace this afternoon in the presence of former FEI President the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Phillip, and Keith Taylor, Chairman of the British Equestrian Federation.

Horses featured in The Queen’s life from a very young age. She had her first riding lesson in the private riding school at Buckingham Palace Mews in January 1930, when she was just three years old and was given her first pony, the Shetland mare Peggy, by her grandfather King George V on her fourth birthday.

One of The Queen’s favourite horses was the mare Burmese, a present from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in 1969 when they came to perform at the

“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth is a life-long lover of horses who has inspired millions around the world and I am honoured to be able to present the first-ever FEI Lifetime Achievement award to Her Majesty on behalf of the FEI today,” HRH Princess Haya said after the presentation in The Queen’s audience room at Buckingham Palace. “She is a true horsewoman, who still rides whenever State business allows, and her knowledge of breeding and bloodlines is incredible. The bond between The Queen and horses is truly extraordinary, and I can’t think of anyone more fitting to receive this very special FEI award in the Year of the Horse. I am very proud to be giving this award on behalf of the FEI family.”

“Horses have played such a huge part in the life of The Queen, and it is a family passion shared particularly with her husband and the two world-class champions in her daughter and granddaughter,” said Keith Taylor. “The Queen has an incredible in-depth knowledge of breeding, both Thoroughbreds and native ponies, and is patron of the British Horse Society, the Fell Pony Society, the Highland Pony Society, the Shire Horse Society, the Welsh Pony and Cob Society and the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association. It’s impossible to think of the Royal Family without thinking of horses. We are truly blessed to have a sovereign who values the horse and its many types so highly.”

The FEI Lifetime Achievement award was created by Princess Haya in 2014, her final year as FEI President, to acknowledge an individual who has inspired generations across the global equestrian community. Recipients of this award are recommended by the FEI Executive Board, and the FEI Bureau was delighted that the first-ever award has gone to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The award is a stunning white gold and diamond brooch of nine interlinked horseshoes, created especially for today’s presentation, and mirroring the insignia of the FEI Awards.

The FEI Lifetime Achievement Award is part of this prestigious scheme, which was launched in 2009 to reward excellence, commitment, dedication and courage. Other global equestrian heroes were honoured at a glittering Gala Dinner during the FEI General Assembly in Baku, Azerbaijan on 14 December. Royal Windsor Horse Show. The Queen rode Burmese side-saddle for 18 years at the Trooping the Colour ceremony, which celebrates the Sovereign’s birthday. The President’s Trophy, presented by Prince Philip for many years to the winning country in the FEI Nations Cup™ series, was a bronze of the Queen and Burmese.

In the Thoroughbred world, horses bred by The Queen have won more than 1,600 races, and, of the British Classics, only the Epsom Derby still eludes Her Majesty. She also breeds Shetland, Highland and Fell ponies to ensure the traditional bloodlines in these native breeds are preserved and enhanced.

As well as The Queen’s enduring love of racing, breeding and equestrian sport, the British Royal Family has a long history linked to the horse. The Duke of Edinburgh played polo until 1970 and then took up carriage driving the following year, and also played a key role in compiling rules for the international sport early in his 22-year tenure as FEI President. The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, and two of The Queen’s grandsons, Princes William and Harry all play polo. The Queen also plays host to the annual Royal Windsor Horse Show, which features international jumping, dressage and driving, and where many of the Queen’s home-bred native ponies line out in the showing classes.

Equestrian sport celebrated 100 years in the Olympic Movement at London 2012, where The Queen’s granddaughter Zara Phillips claimed team silver in Eventing. Zara Phillips won team and individual gold at the FEI World Equestrian Games™ in 2006 and was also crowned European champion in 2005, following in the footsteps of her mother, The Princess Royal, who won the European title in 1971 on Doublet, a horse bred by the Queen out of one of Prince Philip’s polo ponies. Princess Anne, also a former FEI President, is an IOC Member and President of the British Olympic Association, and competed at the Montreal Olympic Games in 1976, the first member of the British Royal Family to compete at Olympic level.

The Queen’s cousin Margaret Rhodes, interviewed last year for a BBC documentary, The Queen: A Passion For Horses, believes that the importance of horses in The Queen’s life cannot be overestimated: “When she became Queen, she had to sacrifice an awful lot of emotions and thoughts of the future, but with horses it’s another world in that it reduces you to just the person in relation to the animal, and you’re not a Queen, you’re just a human being.’’

Once a year, for 10 days in early November, the country comes to the city with Toronto’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. Included in the Fair’s

program is the Royal Horse Show—one of Canada’s premier horse show destinations, and this year did not disappoint. A number of high profile classes were on the schedule and below are some of the highlights!

Kicking off the royal Horse show — Canadian show Jumping Champion CrownedThe Royal Horse Show started off with a bang when Ian Millar of Perth, Ont., was crowned as the 2014 Greenhawk Canadian Show Jumping Champion on Nov. 8 in Toronto, ON.

The 2014 Greenhawk Canadian Show Jumping Championship opened the 10-day Royal Horse Show on Friday evening, Nov. 7, with a $25,000 speed phase, and riders carried their scores forward into Saturday’s $75,000 two-round final. After posting the fastest

performance on Friday night, Millar and Star Power (Quick Star x Calvados), a 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Team Works, maintained their lead on Saturday evening, adding only one time fault during their two round performance.

“Winning this title never gets boring and it’s never easy to do,” said Millar, who first captured the national title in 1983 and has won it 11 times since it was initially held in 1976 at Spruce Meadows. “The Championship is a great way to showcase our up-and-coming national riders and give them a chance to get in the big part of our sport — in the main ring with a lot of

pressure in front of a full house with great sponsors and some serious prize money.”

“The format of the competition, with the top 10 riders coming back for a final round, adds a lot of pressure and everybody feels it,” added Millar, who has had a fantastic season in 2014 with three Nations’ Cup team victories and a string of grand prix wins including $1.5 Million CP International at the CSIO5* Masters tournament. “And that is how you learn to ride on a Nations’ Cup team.”

Second place went to Jaclyn Duff of Edmonton, Alta., riding her 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, Pater Noster (Parco x Heartbreaker), who left all the rails up over the three rounds but added some time faults to finish with a score of 3.84 faults.

“My horse was absolutely spectacular,” said Duff. “He jumped better and better each round. I feel that every time I go in the ring, my horse gives me everything, and that is an amazing feeling. To come second behind Ian Millar in the Canadian Championship is pretty incredible.”

Elissa Reisman of Guelph, Ont., rode Venadium-R (Calvados x Heartbreaker) 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Taboo International, to third spot with a score of 4.06 faults. Riding Angelstone Partners’ Appy Cara (Guidam x Casco), a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Erynn Ballard of Tottenham, Ont., was fourth with a total of 9.18 faults. Rounding out the top five was Christian Sorensen of Caledon, Ont., and his 13-year-old Belgian-bred mare, Recadis-B (Karioka del Follee x Landaris), with 9.64 faults.

neil Badcock scores a victory in the Jump Canada talent squad FinalHeld over two days, the Talent Squad Final competition opened on November 7 with the $8,000 Alfred Rogers National Talent Squad Series Championship, Phase I, where Neil Badcock, 44, of King City, Ont., and Jessie Bonisteel’s seven-year-old Holsteiner gelding, Corrido, were victorious in the opening speed competition.

The pair returned to the Ricoh Coliseum the following day to come out on top in the $10,000 Alfred Rogers National Talent Squad Series Championship, Phase II. With back-to-back wins and the most points over the two days, Badcock was declared the 2014 National Talent Squad Final Champion.

“It is the first time with this horse at this level,” said Badcock. “He is a very young horse at only seven years old, and I’m just really impressed with how he handled everything, including the crowds. I really have to thank my great support team and owners for making it all possible.”

Susan Horn, 30, of Bolton, Ont., claimed the Reserve Champion title riding Balintore, Kingsfield Farm’s eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding. Finishing in third place in Phase I and second in the Phase II class, earned the duo the honour.

“This is really exciting,” said Horne, who has only ridden Balintore in five classes including today’s competition. “Neil was absolutely unbeatable, but I can’t complain. My horse is eight years old, and I have only had him for a month. This is our second show together, and I had no expectations coming in. I just wanted to go around and be clean, and this result is amazing.”

Haley stradling Makes it two in a rowAfter winning the CET Medal Final just weeks before, Haley Stradling of Aldergrove, B.C., added another

victory to her young career with a win at the Jump Canada Medal Final.

Following the completion of the four Jump Canada Medal Regional Finals, the top finishers from across Canada were invited to contest the Jump Canada Medal Final Championship at the Royal Horse Show.

The Jump Canada Medal Final Championship course, set at a height of 3’6”, rode forward while incorporating three broken lines, two tight rollback options and two two-stride combinations. Stradling, 17, navigated the challenging 11 obstacle course effortlessly riding Ceylon, Toni Hickox’s eight-year-old Holsteiner gelding.

Out of the 22 entries, nine riders were invited back for the flat phase where they were required to show a sitting trot; the three gaits of walk, trot and canter in both directions; counter canter; a turn on the haunches and a lengthening of stride at the trot and canter.

For the final test to determine the overall placings, the top four riders returned to the ring for a ride-off over a shortened course, which included a canter fence to start, an inside turn and a final fence at the hand-gallop followed by a halt. Stradling, who was second last to go, demonstrated all the elements perfectly to be selected as the judges’ top pick.

“This is amazing,” said Stradling, who had only ridden Ceylon three times prior to competing in the Final. “It is a big honour to win the Jump Canada Medal.”

Neil Badcock, 44, of King City, Ont., won the Jump Canada Talent Squad Final on Saturday, November 8, at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show riding Corrido. Peter Cullen, member of the Board of Directors of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Association, presented Badcock with the Championship trophy and ribbon.

“I have always wanted to ride here, so it is a dream come true to compete at the Royal,” added Pavicic.

Jacqueline Brooks of Cedar Valley, Ont. rode her 2012 Olympic mount, D Niro (D-Day x Napoleon 625), a 15-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding owned by Mary Brooks of Brookhaven Dressage Inc., to a second place finish with a score of 67.667%.

Riding Pop Art (Amsterdam X Cabochon), a 17-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding owned by Moreen Nicoll and Rusty Holzer, Jill Irving of Moncton, N.B., finished in third spot with a score of 67.367%. Rounding out the top four was Brittany Fraser of New Glasgow, N.S. riding Countess (Don X Solos), her 12-year-old Danish Warmblood mare, earning a final score of 65.733%.

The next day, Nov. 12, Brooks and D Niro returned to the ring to ride to a custom classical freestyle designed by Kurboom. She had the crowd entranced with the unison of her horse to her dramatic music selection. For their fantastic test, which highlighted their strong piaffe and passage, the pair earned a score of 73.750% and won the Grand Prix Freestyle.

“What a great way to end the season,” said Brooks, who has been working with D Niro for just over three years. “We made this freestyle last fall and debuted the second month we were in Florida this year, and it finally rides for him now. I can really let him show himself off, which he enjoys.”

Pavicic finished in second place in the Freestyle with Don Daiquiri. Using very modern music featuring One Republic, American Authors and Avicii, Pavicic received a score of 73.167%.

“It was such an amazing atmosphere, and the crowd was great,” said Pavicic. “I am really proud of my horse. This was his first time in an indoor ring like The Royal. He is still a young horse at only 12-years-old, and we have had an amazing year and an amazing finish to my year.”

Riding Pop Art, Irving finished in third spot with a score of 70.458%. In fourth was Fraser riding Countess earning a final score of 69.625%.

The officiating judges for Grand Prix test at the Royal Invitational, presented by Butternut Ridge, was Lorraine MacDonald (CAN), Joan Macartney (CAN) and Peter Holler (GER).

“My trainers found Ceylon for me, we tried him once and he is the one we ended up using for the class. I was really lucky to have been able to ride him in the Final. He was perfect,” added Stradling, who won the CET Medal Final on October 30, 2014 at the Royal West Tournament in Calgary, AB and is coached by Laura and Brent Balisky and Laura Jane Tidball.

Finishing in second position was Anna Bremermann of Oakville, Ont., with Eric Bremermann’s 13-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding, Pretentious K.

Lexi Ray, also of Oakville, Ont., earned third place riding her own horse, Big City, while Paige Mawson of Toronto, Ont., and Major Tom, owned by Mawson Sport Horses, rounded out the top four.

dressage invitational delights fansRiding her 2014 World Equestrian Games partner, Don Daiquiri, a 12-year-old Oldenburg gelding sired by Don Cardinale, Karen Pavicic of Surrey, B.C., handily won the Grand Prix test at the Royal Invitational, presented by Butternut Ridge.

The pair received a score of 70.067% for their Grand Prix test, which demonstrated Don Daiquiri’s great gaits.

“Don Daiquiri was a little spicier than I thought he was going to be, but overall I was really happy with him” said Pavicic, who co-owns Don Daiquiri with Jayne Essig. “I’d rather him be a little more on the spicy side, so it worked for me. We had a little spook in the corner, which caught me off guard, but otherwise I was happy with my test and happy with my horse.”

Haley Stradling Wins Running Fox CET Medal Final at Royal West

Haley Stradling of Aldergrove, B.C., emerged the winner of the Running Fox CET Medal Final on Thursday, October 30, 2014 at the Royal West Tournament, in Calgary, AB.

For the first time since the inception of the Running Fox CET National Medal Finals, the prestigious class was held outside of the province of Ontario at the inaugural Royal West Tournament. Four riders from each of the four separate regions — Atlantic, Ontario, Prairie and British Columbia — qualified in their own circuits to compete in the National Medal Finals for a total of sixteen top equitation riders.

Riding Jenna Powell’s 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding, Stanley SM, Stradling won the CET Medal Final which was held over two days and included three phases-Flat/Gymnastic, Jumping and a Final Four test.

In the Flat/Gymnastic phase held Wednesday, October 29, course designer, Peter Holmes, had the riders complete a demanding gymnastic course featuring two changes of lead to the first fence, bounces, trot fence and a jump-off style turn. Chelsea Walsh, 16, of Calgary, Alta., who won the first phase, scored 81 riding Parkmore B, Ainsley Walsh’s 14-year-old Irish Sport Horse. In second was Jessie Jia, 19, of Victoria, B.C.,

with Quidam’s Ramiro, a 16-year-old Holsteiner gelding owned by Uma Oneill, and Stradling finished in third, with a score of 73.

Stradling returned to the ring the following day where she earned the top score in the Jumping Phase with 88, which was enough to move into second place with a combined, two-round total of 161. Walsh has the lead with 168, while Jia was sitting in third with 159. Rounding out the top four was Sarah Barker, 19, of Hamilton, Ont., riding Coeur de Baloubet, Mark Hayes’ eight-year-old Canadian Warmblood.

The top four riders returned for a final test, which included a shortened final course that incorporated a trot fence, four steps of walk, a halt and no stirrup work. Stradling and Stanley SM performed a flawless final test to move up from second place and secure the victory.

“In the flat/gymnastic phase everything rode quite forward for me. I had to change my plan on a couple of lines but they ended up working out,” said Stradling, who is coached by Laura and Brent Balisky and Laura Jane Tidball “I was very happy with my jumper phase. My plan stayed the same the whole way through, and Stanley jumped his heart out for me.”

“I had many flat and jumping lessons with my trainer getting Stanley really listening and it also gave me a bit more of a chance to get used to him, since I just had started riding him in the end of august,” added Stradling. “We schooled complicated courses in preparation for Finals.”

Designed to be a foundation for riders moving from the hunter divisions into jumper competition by CET Medal founder Barbara Anderson, the Running Fox CET Medal is an equitation competition where the riders are judged on their position and riding style, as well as their ability to control the horse over a jumper course. The top 16 riders, qualified from four Regional Finals, were invited to contest the Running Fox CET Medal Final at the Royal West Tournament.

As the winner, Stradling received a new Childeric saddle donated by long-time CET Medal Final sponsor, Running Fox. The top eight riders received coolers and all 16 entries were awarded lovely Walsh halters-all courtesy of Running Fox. Running Fox also sponsors the four regional finals across Canada as well.

Jump Canada Announces Bursary Recipients for 2014

Jump Canada is pleased to announce the young athletes who have been named recipients of the Jump Canada Bursary for 2014.

In recognition of the difficulty that young riders face as they strive to continue their education while also competing at high levels of equestrian sport, Jump Canada developed the Bursary program for athletes aged 14-21 in the hunter, jumper and equitation divisions. Since its inception in 2002, the Jump Canada Bursary Program has been made possible by a leadership donation of $5,000 from the Samuel Group of Companies. Jump Canada matches that donation to offer a total of $10,000 in bursary monies.

“I feel that supporting and empowering our youth is one of the most important things that Jump Canada can do,” said Mark Samuel, who helped found the Jump Canada Bursary Program and is a member of the Committee. “I am proud of the role that the bursary program plays in achieving that goal, and I congratulate this year’s worthy recipients.”

The following young athletes were awarded Jump Canada Bursaries in the amount of $2,000 each.

Kathryn Beunder, 14, of Calgary, Alta., first started riding at the age of eight. Competing in both the hunter and jumper divisions, Beunder has demonstrated her

Acadia University, Phinney is in her third year studying business.

Already a veteran of international competition at 15 years of age, Samantha Starratt of Calgary, Alta., represented Canada at the 2013 FEI Children’s International Classic Final in Brazil where she finished in 11th place individual and was a member of the gold medal winning team all while riding a borrowed horse. Starratt first started riding at the age of two, went to a riding camp at five and first entered the ring at seven years old. Currently, she is competing at heights of up to 1.30m in the jumper ring while maintaining an average at school of 86%. Part of Starratt’s passion for riding involves bringing along young horses and helping riders at the barn. Recently, Starratt was selected at a member of Jump Alberta 1.20m Team competing in a Nations’ Cup style competition in Sacramento, Calif.. With the goal of becoming an equine or human chiropractor, Starratt’s riding goals include the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships and maybe one day becoming a member of Canada’s Olympic Show Jumping Team.

Justine Tainsh, 22, of Calgary, Alta., first started riding on her grandparents’ Standard breeding and training farm. For several years, she successfully developed her skills as a rider in a variety of hunter and jumper divisions on several different horses. Tainsh’s dream came true this year when she was finally able to purchase a horse this April after a five year hiatus as an owner. Christina 14, a nine-year-old Westphalian mare, and Tainsh have earned championships at the 1.20m division this season as well as moving up to the 1.30m level. With the goal of competing at a 1.40m, Tainsh also plans on becoming an environmental and energy lawyer once she completes her bachelor’s degree in psychology.

Each year, Jump Canada selects worthy recipients of its Bursary program based on the strength of applications received. Elements considered in the application process include a transcript of grades and outline of academic curriculum; future educational plans; equestrian experience; commitment and dedication to their sport; a positive image within the sport; achievement of notable competition results, whether at the local, regional or national level; goals within the equestrian industry; and financial need.

versatility as a rider by winning in both rings. From 2012–2014, Beunder has worked at Spruce Meadows in the Special Features Department as a Colour Guard Rider assisting with the ring presentations. In 2013, she was named as the HITS Thermal Rider of the Month for February for her consistent competition results. Also in 2013, Beunder represented Canada at the Sparkassen German Friendship Games held in Herford, GER, competing in the Team Jumping event. With the goal of competing in the CET Mini Medal and the CET Medal classes in the future with her young horse, Beunder progressed from the Childen’s Hunter division in 2013 to the Junior/Amateur Jumpers in 2014. With the long-term goal of participating in the North American Junior and Young Rider Championships, Beunder also has plans to pursue a university degree once she completes high school.

Richmond, P.E.I. resident Lexy Paynter, 16, capped off a very exciting season this year by finishing in seventh place overall in the Jump Canada Medal Finals at the Royal Horse Show in Toronto, Ont., riding Famous, Jennifer Sarsfield’s 12-year-old Warmblood gelding. In addition to a very competitive horse show season which started in Florida early in 2014, Paynter earned exceptionally high marks, in the 90s, in all subjects by correspondence in high school. In 2012, Paynter represented P.E.I. at the Canadian Interprovincial Equestrian Championships, in Bromont, Que., riding Roman K, her 12-year-old Canadian Warmblood gelding, where she was awarded the Junior bronze medal individually in jumping and was part of the bronze medal team. Paynter plans on attaining a university science degree as soon as she completes high school. As far as her riding plans go, Paynter would like to keep progressing up the Junior/Amateur jumper levels with Roman K.

At home in Halifax, N.S., Evan Phinney, 20, joined the Halifax Junior Bengal Lancers at the age of seven. Through the Lancers riding school program, Phinney became a very well rounded horseperson who is knowledgeable about all aspects of horse care, maintenance and riding. Competing at the Gold level since 2011, she has consistently placed in the 1.10m, 1.15m and 1.20m jumper divisions. In 2014, Phinney qualified for the CET National Medal Finals at the Royal West in Calgary, AB, finishing in eighth place in the Jumping Phase and 12th place overall riding Bling, her 12-year-old American Warmblood mare. With Bling, Phinney also won the 1.20m Mini Prix at the International Bromont Week 3. Currently enrolled in

Roberta Sheffield, Canadian Equestrian Team member who represented Canada at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014, recently won the Lincolnshire Disabled Sports Person of the Year award.

Sheffield, who is based in Lincolnshire, UK, was nominated due to all her recent successes in the ring representing Canada. The award ceremony, which was a glamourous affair, was held November 6, 2014.

“I didn’t for a moment think that I would actually win, especially when I saw the videos of the other two nominees,” said Sheffield, who earned a fourth place finish, just out of the medals, at WEG with a lovely Freestyle test for Grade III with a score of 70.200% riding Evelyn Little’s eight-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Bindro T. “We all stood nervously on the stage while the short clips were played. I was gobsmacked when it was announced that I had won.”

“It was wonderful to be honoured with this award for all the hard work put into me by Equine Canada, the team and my personal coaches, the owners of my horses and the rest of the home team. I hope that I have been able to represent Canada well in my local community and to the wider world,” added Sheffield.

This award recognises someone who is aged over 18 as of November 6, 2013 who has displayed an outstanding level of personal achievement at district, county, regional, national or international level.

Jochen Schleese was certified as the youngest Master Saddler ever in Europe in 1985. In 1986, he was asked to be the Official Saddler for the World Dressage Championships held just north of Toronto, Ontario. Dear Dressage Enthusiast, As many of you already know, 2012 was a difficult year for Canadian Dressage, however, we have since dusted ourselves off and have come back fighting!

Dressage Canada started on a new road with the Florida Fortnight in January 2014, which aimed at exposing our riders to a cross section of professionals who could help them improve all aspects of their performance. This approach was successful and our team represented Canada with pride at the 2014 World Equestrian Games achieving strong individual and team performances.

The 2015 Pan American Games will be held on home soil in July, and we have the riders and the horses to bring home a gold medal. To do this, we need to support our athletes as much as possible.

Dressage Canada has built a strong team of experts to assist our athletes. This team includes Dr. Volker Moritz (Technical Advisor), Dr. Geoff Vernon (team veterinarian) and Dirk Stroda (team mental coach). These experts will provide our riders and horses with the support they need to fly our flag with pride and honour in front of a hometown crowd.

Boehringer Ingelheim- Equine Canada Horse Health and Welfare Award

The Boehringer Ingelheim-Equine Canada Horse Health and Welfare Award recognizes an individual or organization that has for an extended period of time, contributed directly

to the improvement of horse health and welfare.

The award will incorporate a recognition plaque to belong to the recipient, inclusion of the recipient’s biography in Equine Canada Annual Awards Gala booklet, a complimentary trip to Equine Canada Annual Awards Gala, and a $1000 donation to an equine charity of their choice. This award is jointly supported by Equine Canada and a donation from Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) Ltd.

Submission Deadline: February 12th, 2015

Criteria» Horse health and welfare will encompass but not be

limited to, population management, development of welfare guidelines, injury reduction, retraining, retirement, general safety, adoption, welfare in processing, disease prevention and enforcement of horse welfare rules and regulations.

» Nominations may be submitted by organizations and individual members of the equine community.

» The award will be given based on the merit of nominations received and might not necessarily be presented each year.

» The recipient (or a representative) must be available and willing to attend the Equine Canada Awards Gala recognition ceremony. The recipient must be willing to participate in other recognition activities as required, such as interviews with the media. In addition, a news

release will be distributed to media across the country and information will be posted to the Equine Canada website and its other communication materials and social media networks.

Nomination Supporting Material Each nomination must include:

» a completed nomination form;

» a detailed letter of nomination, which describes how the nominee has met the award criteria; and

» a minimum of two and no more than five letters of support for the nomination from colleagues, clients or organizations.

Selection Process» A selection committee comprised of representatives

from the Equine Canada Health and Welfare Committee will select the winning candidate.

» At the discretion of the Health and Welfare Committee, an award may not be presented in any given year.

» Award winners will be notified prior to the Equine Canada Awards Gala, which is being held March 25–29, 2015. All travel and accommodation arrangements will be handled by Equine Canada staff.

Andrea Taylor Receives the Prestigious Petro-Canada

Coaching Excellence Award

As 2014 comes to an end, it is time to reflect, celebrate and begin setting goals for 2015. One success to celebrate is the awarding of the Petro-

Canada Coaching Excellence Award to para-dressage coach Andrea Taylor in recognition of her coaching achievements at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014. As a certified Level 3 coach, Taylor was the national team coach of the Canadian Para-Dressage Team and coached Lauren Barwick to individual silver and bronze medal finishes at the Games, riding Off to Paris, Equine Canada’s 13-year-old Oldenburg mare.

“I am really proud to accept this award on behalf of the whole Canadian Team — especially my fellow Team coach, Mary Longden,” said Taylor, who had to be National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) certified to be eligible for the award. “It takes a hard-working, focused group of people to help the team members do their job — in this instance, win — at the world level.”

“I love coaching and trying to figure just what each horse and rider combo needs to be the best at their level. It takes commitment from both sides and that is what we had at these Games. Lauren and Off to Paris’ huge success in France made me proud to be a coach and one of many supporters in this fantastic sport called dressage,” added Taylor.

Petro-Canada Coaching Excellence Awards were awarded at the Petro-Canada Sport Leadership Awards Gala, which took place in Ottawa, Ont. on November 7, 2014. These yearly prestigious awards recognize coaches whose athletes have excelled at world championships, Olympic and Paralympic Games, and at the Special Olympics World Games.

Equine Canada began celebrating all of our certified coaches and instructors with the release of a limited edition toque. These toques allow coaches and instructors to proudly identify themselves as certified through Equine Canada’s NCCP. With just a few toques left, you still have a chance to get yours! Voici que la dernière édition du Royal Agricultural Winter Fair vient de se terminer et, tout compte fait, ce fut un succès retentissant. Le Royal fut aussi une belle réussite pour Canada Hippique. Cette année, le nouvel emplacement de notre kiosque nous a permis beaucoup plus d’interactions avec le public. Les membres du personnel et moi-même avons beaucoup apprécié chacune de nos rencontres. Certains sont simplement venus nous saluer ou poser une question alors que d’autres souhaitaient obtenir des renseignements. Les membres du Conseil d’administration de Canada Hippique ont profité du Royal pour se réunir en personne pendant une journée et demie. Ils ont ainsi pu faire le point sur les dossiers de Canada Hippique. Je sais qu’il en a été de même pour le Conseil du sport et quelques comités de discipline.

Le Conseil d’administration a étudié au cours des dernières semaines le plan de restructuration du cadre administratif de Canada Hippique, qui avait été fixé comme l’une des priorités sur lesquelles notre nouveau chef de la direction, Eva Havaris, devait se pencher au cours de son premier mandat. Elle a fait un excellent travail en élaborant une structure révisée qui, une fois qu’elle sera implantée au cours de la nouvelle année, nous permettra de mettre en œuvre notre nouveau plan stratégique et d’améliorer notre service aux membres. Le Conseil et moi-même appuyons ce plan progressif de mise en œuvre et nous sommes conscients que les changements à venir ne seront pas toujours faciles. Toutefois, si chacun y met du sien, ces modifications vont mettre notre organisme en meilleure posture pour atteindre ses objectifs, présents et futurs. Mme Havaris nous dévoilera plus largement toutes les modalités de ce plan structurel en 2015.

Je viens tout juste de rentrer de Bakou en Azerbaïdjan où se sont tenues l’Assemblée générale de la FEI et les réunions du Groupe régional IV et de la PAEC. L’une des visées principales de ces rencontres était d’élire un nouveau président puisque Son Altesse Royale la princesse Haya se retire après deux mandats de quatre ans couronnés de succès. Sa passion pour le sport équestre et pour la grande famille de la FEI nous manquera à tous.

Le message du président

L’héritage qu’elle laisse derrière elle et ses réalisations à la tête de la FEI se feront sentir bien longtemps après son départ. C’est pour moi un honneur d’avoir eu l’occasion de représenter Canada Hippique auprès de la FEI alors qu’elle était dirigée par la princesse Haya.

L’esprit d’unité étant manifeste, ils étaient cinq candidats dans la course à la prestigieuse présidence de la FEI. Dans un élan d’appui unanime, l’assemblée a élu en un seul tour le Belge Ingmar De Vos au titre de président de la FEI. le BelGe ingmar dE Vos présidera aux destinées de la Fédération équEstrE intErnationalE

Le 14 décembre 2014, une majorité écrasante dès le premier tour de scrutin a élu Ingmar De Vos à la présidence de la Fédération équestre internationale (la FEI), l’organisme directeur des sports équestres sur

la scène internationale. L’élection a eu lieu lors de l’assemblée générale de la FEI tenue du 11 au 14 décembre à Bakou, en Azerbaïdjan.

Agé de 51 ans, De Vos occupait les fonctions de secrétaire général de la FEI depuis mai 2011, jusqu’à ce qu’il rafle 98 votes sur une possibilité de 131 à cette élection. Il a pris les rênes de la présidence dès la clôture de l’assemblée générale de la FEI pour un mandat de quatre ans, avec possibilité de renouvellement pour au plus trois mandats consécutifs. Il devra nommer un remplaçant intérimaire à son poste de secrétaire général devenu vacant, jusqu’à la nomination d’un successeur permanent.

La présidente sortante, SAR la princesse Haya, a annoncé les résultats de l’élection à près de 350 délégués représentant 91 fédérations, intervenants, commanditaires et médias internationaux qui ont offert de chaleureux applaudissements à monsieur De Vos, apparemment très ému. « Je suis très honoré et touché par ce formidable appui et je vous remercie du fond du cœur de votre confiance. Bakou demeurera à jamais gravé dans ma mémoire. »

« Les élections sont toujours difficiles, car elles divisent un peu la famille, mais je vous assure que je présiderai au nom de tous et servirai l’ensemble des membres de notre communauté. Je travaillerai très fort pour maintenir cette solidarité. »

Au moment d’annoncer sa candidature, monsieur De Vos a déclaré clairement, dans une lettre adressée aux fédérations nationales, qu’il ne ferait pas campagne pour le poste, en présentant toutefois une déclaration de principe élégante, passionnée et concise fondée sur les cinq idées maîtresses qui soutiendront la direction de l’organisme vers ce nouveau chapitre de son existence :

CONTINUITÉ – Maintenir la FEI aux normes les plus élevées et préserver l’héritage de SAR la princesse Haya.

SOLIDARITÉ – Entretenir la solidarité au sein de la communauté de la FEI.

RESPECT – Privilégier le respect du cheval et la déférence entre toutes les fédérations nationales et les intervenants.

INNOVATION – Adopter les nouvelles technologies et idées afin de faire prospérer le sport équestre et promouvoir l’organisme.

Ingmar De Vos, élu nouveau président de la FEI

La Fédération équestre internationale (FEI), fondée en 1921, est l’organisme mondial dirigeant du saut d’obstacles, du dressage, du para-dressage, du concours complet, de l’attelage, de l’attelage para-équestre, de l’endurance, de la voltige et du reining, lesquels, l’an dernier seulement, ont donné lieu à 3557 épreuves dans le monde entier, représentant une croissance de plus de 150 % depuis 2003.

La FEI, reconnue par le Comité olympique international, a célébré un siècle de présence du sport équestre au sein du mouvement olympique lors des Jeux olympiques de Londres en 2012. Elle est également devenue la première fédération internationale à régir et à réglementer le parasport international au même titre que ses sept disciplines pour athlètes valides lorsque le para-dressage s’est ajouté à sa liste en 2006.

La FEI dirige maintenant tous les concours internationaux de para-dressage, lesquels sont présentés régulièrement aux Jeux paralympiques depuis 1996 et, depuis 2010, aux Jeux équestres mondiaux ™, avec l’attelage para-équestre.

DÉVELOPPEMENT – Stimuler la croissance de notre sport dans toutes les régions.

Pour la prochaine décennie, De Vos envisage un avenir où la FEI dynamisera l’hippisme pour lui faire atteindre le sommet du sport d’élite et la reconnaissance de chef de file mondial en matière de saine gouvernance. Il deviendra un modèle à suivre au plan de la protection de l’intégrité et du bien-être de l’athlète (tant humain qu’équin) dans le sport. Il entrevoit un temps où le succès, l’envergure et l’attrait du sport équestre assureront avec une certitude absolue notre place au programme olympique.

QuI est Ingmar De Vos?Le nouveau président élu est diplômé en sciences politiques, en gestion des affaires et en droit international et européen. Conseiller au sénat belge en début de carrière, il se joint à la Fédération équestre belge en qualité de directeur général en 1990 pour y occuper le poste de secrétaire général de 1997 à 2011.

Durant son mandat à la Fédération équestre belge, soit de 1990 à 2010, De Vos agit en outre comme chef de mission pour l’équipe équestre belge à tous les Jeux équestres mondiaux FEI™ et à plusieurs Jeux olympiques. Il occupe aussi les fonctions de secrétaire général de la Fédération équestre européenne de 2001, année de la création de l’organisme, à 2011, lorsqu’il entre en poste à la FEI.

Les autres candidats à l’élection étaient Pierre Durand (FR), Pierre Genecand (CH), John McEwen (GB) et Ulf Helgstrand (DK). Helgstrand a retiré sa candidature avant la tenue du scrutin et un sixième candidat, Javier Revuelta del Peral (ES) a renoncé au processus électoral en novembre.

Au total, 131 boîtes de scrutin ont été distribuées aux délégués des fédérations nationales et 131 suffrages valables ont été comptés. Les fédérations nationales présentes étaient au nombre de 91, tandis que 40 intervenants étaient représentés par procuration.

Détenteurs de la prestation la plus rapide affichée vendredi soir, Millar et Star Power (Quick Star x Calvados), le hongre warmblood hollandais de 13 ans appartenant à Team Works, ont conservé leur avance au cours de la soirée de samedi, n’ajoutant qu’une seule faute de temps pour les deux manches de l’épreuve.

«C’est un plaisir toujours renouvelé de mettre la main sur ce titre, qui n’est jamais facile à conquérir», a dit Millar, qui a remporté le titre canadien pour la première fois en 1983 et l’a décroché 11 fois depuis son inauguration en 1976 à Spruce Meadows. «Le Championnat est une belle façon de mettre en valeur la relève canadienne et donne à nos cavaliers prometteurs une chance d’entrer dans les ligues majeures de notre sport; ils montent dans le manège principal et doivent faire face à une importante pression, à des estrades bondées et à d’excellents commanditaires en se disputant des prix en argent substantiels.»

«Le format de cette épreuve, qui invite les dix meilleurs concurrents à revenir pour la manche finale, ajoute beaucoup de pression et tout le monde la ressent», a ajouté Millar, qui a vécu une fabuleuse saison en 2014 avec trois victoires en Coupe des nations et une brochette de grands prix, dont le CP International de 1,5 millions de dollars au CSIO5* Masters Tournament. «C’est comme cela qu’on apprend à évoluer dans une équipe de Coupe des nations.»

La deuxième place est allée à Jaclyn Duff (Edmonton, Alb.) qui montait Pater Noster (Parco x Heartbreaker), son hongre warmblood belge de 12 ans. Le duo n’a renversé aucun obstacle au cours des trois manches mais a enregistré des fautes de temps pour un résultat final de 3,84 points.

«Ma monture a été absolument spectaculaire, a déclaré Duff. Il sautait de mieux en mieux dans chaque manche. Je sens que chaque fois que j’entre dans le manège, mon cheval me donne son maximum, c’est une sensation extraordinaire. Finir deuxième derrière Ian Millar au championnat canadien, c’est tout à fait mémorable.»

Elissa Reisman (Guelph, Ont.) et Venadium-R (Calvados x Heartbreaker), un hongre warmblood hollandais de 12 ans appartenant à Taboo International, ont terminé troisièmes avec 4,06 points. Montant Appy Cara (Guidam x Casco), un hongre warmblood hollandais de neuf ans propriété de Angelstone Partners, Erynn Ballard (Tottenham, Ont.) a pris la quatrième place avec un total de 9,18 points. Une fois l’an, tous les intervenants du milieu équestre au pays convergent vers Toronto où se déroule le Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. L’édition 2014 a plus que jamais confirmé la réputation du Royal comme

étant l’une des destinations de choix au Canada pour la tenue des concours hippiques. Plusieurs épreuves de haut niveau figuraient au programme. Nous mettons ici en relief quelques faits saillants de ce grand rendez-vous.

tout d’abord, le couronnement du champion canadien de saut d’obstaclesL’édition 2014 a commencé par un coup d’éclat avec le couronnement d’Ian Millar (Perth, Ont.) sur le podium du championnat canadien de saut d’obstacles Greenhawk, le 8 novembre.

Le vendredi 7 novembre, le championnat canadien de saut d’obstacles Greenhawk marquait l’ouverture des dix jours de compétition du Concours hippique Royal. Après la phase de vitesse dotée de 25 000 dollars, les résultats des concurrents s’ajoutaient à ceux de la finale de 75 000 dollars présentée en deux manches le

victoire de neil Badcock lors de la finale du Circuit talent squad de saut d’obstacles Canada La finale du Circuit Talent Squad de Saut d’obstacles Canada, qui se tenait deux jours d’affilée, a débuté le 7 novembre avec la phase I du championnat Alfred Rogers, une épreuve de vitesse dotée de 8 000 dollars. Neil Badcock (King City, Ont.), 44 ans, et Corrido, un hongre Holsteiner de sept ans appartenant à Jessie Bonisteel, ont été les gagnants.

De retour le lendemain dans le Colisée Ricoh, le tandem a raflé le trophée de la phase II du championnat Alfred Rogers, doté de 10 000 dollars. Grâce à ses deux victoires consécutives et au plus grand nombre de points cumulés durant les deux jours, Badcock a été déclaré champion de la finale nationale 2014 du Circuit Talent Squad.

«C’est une première pour moi avec ce cheval à ce niveau, a mentionné Badcock. C’est un très jeune cheval, il a seulement sept ans, et je suis vraiment impressionné par son comportement dans ces circonstances, et face à la foule. Je dois absolument remercier mon excellente équipe de soutien et les propriétaires qui rendent tout ceci possible.»

Susan Horn, (Bolton, Ont.), 30 ans, s’est vue décerner le vice-championnat en selle sur Balintore, un hongre warmblood hollandais de huit ans appartenant à Kingsfield Farm. Une troisième place en phase I et une deuxième position en phase II leur a valu cet honneur.

«C’est tellement emballant», a dit Horne, qui ne comptait que cinq épreuves avec Balintore, incluant celle d’aujourd’hui. «Neil était absolument imbattable, mais je ne me plains pas. Mon cheval a huit ans et je ne le monte que depuis un mois. C’est notre deuxième concours en duo, et je n’avais aucune attente à mon entrée dans le manège. Je souhaitais seulement faire un parcours sans erreur et voilà que nous obtenons ce résultat fantastique.»

Deux victoires d’affilée pour Haley stradling Après avoir remporté la finale Médaille EEC quelques semaines auparavant, Haley Stradling (Aldergrove, C.-B.) a ajouté une autre victoire à son palmarès, celle de la finale Médaille Saut d’obstacles Canada.

Après la conclusion des quatre finales régionales qui avaient lieu à l’échelle canadienne, les meilleurs cavaliers ont été invités à disputer la finale, soit le Championnat Médaille Saut d’obstacles Canada au Concours hippique Royal.

Le parcours du championnat, dont les obstacles étaient d’une hauteur de 3 pi 6 po, était assez galopant tout en comprenant également trois lignes brisées, deux options de volte-face et deux combinaisons de deux foulées. Stradling a navigué à la perfection dans ce parcours difficile de 11 obstacles sur Ceylon, l’Holsteiner de huit ans de Toni Hickox.

Sur les 22 couples ayant pris le départ, neuf ont été invités à participer à la phase sur le plat qui suivait, où ils ont effectué le trot assis, le pas, le trot et le galop dans les deux directions, le contre-galop, la pirouette, et l’allongement au trot et au galop.

Les quatre premiers cavaliers se sont ensuite affrontés dans l’épreuve finale qui allait établir le classement, un barrage sur un parcours raccourci comprenant un obstacle à franchir au galop à partir du pas, un virage vers l’intérieur et un dernier obstacle au grand galop suivi d’un arrêt. Stradling, qui était l’avant-dernière partante, a réalisé un très beau parcours, ce qui lui a valu d’être la favorite des juges.

« C’est formidable », a dit la cavalière de 17 ans qui n’avait monté Ceylon que trois fois avant de prendre part à la finale. « C’est un grand honneur de gagner la finale Médaille Saut d’obstacles Canada. »

« Ce sont mes entraîneurs qui ont découvert Ceylon. Nous l’avons essayé et c’est lui que nous avons choisi pour l’épreuve. C’est une vraie chance d’avoir pu le monter en finale. Il a été parfait », a ajouté celle qui a également gagné la finale Médaille EEC le 30 octobre dernier au concours Royal West Tournament de Calgary, Alberta. Ses entraîneurs sont Laura et Brent Balisky, ainsi que Laura Jane Tidball.

Haley Stradling (Aldergrove, C.-B.) a remporté la finale Médaille Saut

d’obstacles Canada le 11 novembre 2014 dans le cadre du Royal Agricultural

Winter Fair de Toronto, Ontario.

Susan Horn (Bolton, Ont.), 30 ans, en selle sur Balintore, a été déclarée

Neil Badcock (King City, Ont.), 44 ans, et Corrido ont remporté la finale du Circuit Talent Squad de Saut d’obstacles Canada présentée le samedi 8 novembre au Concours hippique Royal de Toronto.

La victoire de la reprise de Grand prix dans le cadre du Royal Invitational, présenté par Butternut Ridge, est allée à Karen Pavicic et Don Daiquiri.

Jacqueline Brooks et son partenaire des Jeux olympiques de 2012, D Niro, ont remporté la reprise libre de Grand prix dans le cadre du Royal Invitational, présenté par Butternut Ridge.

Jacqueline Brooks (Cedar Valley, Ont.) était à bord de D Niro (D-Day x Napoleon 625), le cheval qu’elle montait aux Jeux olympiques de 2012, un warmblood suédois de 15 ans appartenant à Mary Brooks de Brookhaven Dressage Inc. Le couple a terminé au deuxième rang avec une note de 67,667 %.

Jill Irving (Moncton, N.-B.) et Pop Art (Amsterdam x Cabochon), le warmblood hollandais de 17 ans de Moreen Nicoll et Rusty Holzer, ont eu droit à une troisième place assortie d’une note de 67,367 %. Complétant le top quatre (65,733 %), on retrouvait Brittany Fraser (New Glasgow, N.-É.) sur Countess (Don X Solos), sa warmblood danoise de 12 ans.

Le lendemain 12 novembre, Brooks et D Niro présentaient leur reprise libre sur un thème classique, une création de Kurboom. La foule a été complètement séduite lorsqu’elle a vu le cheval littéralement porté par la musique. Une admirable reprise ponctuée d’extraordinaires mouvements de piaffer et de passage qui a valu au couple la victoire de la reprise libre de Grand prix avec une note de 73,750 %.

“Quelle merveilleuse façon de conclure la saison”, a dit la cavalière, qui a D Niro comme partenaire depuis un peu plus de trois ans. “Nous avons conçu cette reprise libre l’automne dernier et nous avons commencé à la présenter à notre deuxième mois de participation en Floride cette année. L’harmonie vient de s’installer et je peux désormais le laisser s’exprimer, ce qu’il adore faire.”

Pavicic s’est classée deuxième (73,167 %) dans la reprise libre avec Don Daiquiri. Leur musique très moderne comprenait des extraits de pièces de One Republic, American Authors et Avicii.

“L’atmosphère était formidable et la foule était fantastique, a-t-elle dit. Je suis tellement fière de mon cheval. C’était la première fois qu’il se produisait dans une carrière intérieure. À 12 ans, il est encore jeune, et nous avons connu une super année qui s’est terminée sur une très belle note.”

Irving et Pop Art ont pris la troisième place avec 70,458 %. Fraser et Countess sont arrivées quatrièmes avec un résultat final de 69,625 %.

Les juges en fonction lors de la reprise de Grand prix du Royal Invitational, présenté par Butternut Ridge, étaient: Lorraine MacDonald (Canada) en M, Joan Macartney (Canada) en E, et Peter Holler (Allemagne) en C.

En deuxième position, on retrouvait Anna Bremermann (Oakville, Ont.) sur Pretentious K, le warmblood canadien de 13 ans d’Eric Bremermann.

Lexi Ray, également d’Oakville, a eu droit à la troisième place sur son cheval Big City, tandis que Paige Mawson (Toronto, Ont.) et Major Tom, un cheval qui appartient à Mawson Sport Horses, prenaient la quatrième position.

Don Daiquiri a été brillant et les juges ont octroyé au couple une note de 70,067 %.

“Don Daiquiri était un brin plus énergique que ce à quoi je m’attendais, mais dans l’ensemble j’étais très satisfaite de lui”, a dit Pavicic, qui possède le cheval en copropriété avec Jayne Essig. “J’aime bien qu’il soit plus énergique, ça me convient. Il a fait un petit écart dans le coin qui m’a un peu surprise, mais autrement je suis bien heureuse de ma reprise et enchantée de mon cheval.”

“Je souhaite participer ici depuis toujours. Mon rêve de concourir au Royal vient de se réaliser”, a-t-elle ajouté.

Haley Stradling remporte la finale Médaille EEC Running Fox au concours Royal West Tournament

Haley Stradling (Aldergrove, C.-B.) a été déclarée gagnante de la finale Médaille EEC Running Fox, le jeudi 30 octobre dernier au Royal West

Tournament, de Calgary, Alberta.

Pour la première fois depuis la création de la finale nationale Médaille EEC Running Fox, la prestigieuse épreuve se tenait à l’extérieur de la province d’Ontario, soit au Royal West Tournament. Seize cavaliers, soit quatre par région (Atlantique, Ontario, Prairies et Colombie-Britannique) étaient qualifiés pour participer à la grande finale nationale d’équitation.

EEC Running Fox dont les trois phases (épreuve de plat/gymnastique, épreuve d’obstacle et le test final ouvert aux quatre premiers cavaliers) se déroulaient en deux jours.

Dans la phase de plat/gymnastique du mercredi 29 octobre, dont la conception était signée Peter Holmes, les cavalières devaient passer un exigeant parcours de gymnastique comportant deux changements de pied avant le premier obstacle, des sauts de puce, des obstacles à franchir au trot, ainsi qu’un virage aux allures de barrage. Agée de 16 ans, Chelsea Walsh (Calgary, Alb.) a remporté cette phase avec un résultat de 81 sur Parkmore B, le cheval de sport irlandais de 14 ans

Haley Stradling (Aldergrove, C.-B.), a été déclarée gagnante de la finale Médaille EEC Running Fox jeudi le 30 octobre 2014 dans le cadre du tout premier concours Royal West Tournament de Calgary, Alberta (de gauche à droite : Pedro Cebulka, John Anderson, Laura Balisky, Haley Stradling, Debra Smith et John Taylor).

d’Ainsley Walsh. Jessie Jia (Victoria, C.-B.), 14 ans, était deuxième sur Quidam’s Ramiro, l’Holsteiner de 16 ans d’Uma Oneill. Stradling a terminé au troisième rang avec 73 points.

Le lendemain, Stradling enregistrait le meilleur score (88) dans la phase de saut d’obstacles, ce qui lui permettait de remonter en deuxième position avec un cumul de 161 points pour les deux phases. À cette étape, Walsh était en avance (168) tandis que Jia se retrouvait troisième avec 159. Sarah Barker (Hamilton, Ont.), 19 ans, et Cœur de Baloubet, le warmblood canadien de Mark Hayes occupaient la quatrième place.

Les quatre premières cavalières sont ensuite revenues pour le test final, un parcours raccourci exigeant de franchir un obstacle au trot, suivi de quatre foulées au pas, d’un arrêt, et de travail sans étriers. Stradling et Stanley SM ont tout exécuté sans la moindre anicroche, ce qui leur a valu de se hisser au sommet du classement.

« La phase de plat/gymnastique s’est déroulée harmonieusement pour moi. J’ai dû changer de tactique à quelques endroits, mais ce fut à mon avantage », a dit la cavalière dont les entraîneurs sont Laura et Brent Balisky et Laura Jane Tidball. « Je suis bien satisfaite de la phase de saut d’obstacles. J’ai suivi mon plan d’un bout à l’autre et Stanley a été d’une grande générosité à mon égard. »

« J’ai eu plusieurs leçons au plat et à l’obstacle afin de préparer Stanley. Je voulais qu’il soit à l’écoute et cela m’a également donné la chance de m’habituer à lui, puisque j’ai commencé à le monter à la fin d’août », a-t-elle ajouté. « Nous avons pratiqué sur des parcours compliqués pour nous préparer à la finale. »

Conçue par Barbara Anderson pour confirmer les bases des cavaliers qui quittent les divisions de chasse pour passer à celles de saut d’obstacles, la Médaille EEC Running Fox est une épreuve d’équitation où la position et le style des concurrents comptent, ainsi que

leur habileté à maîtriser leur cheval sur un parcours de saut d’obstacles. Les 16 meilleurs cavaliers qualifiés aux quatre finales régionales ont été invités à disputer la finale Médaille EEC Running Fox au Royal West Tournament.

En tant que gagnante de l’épreuve, Stradling a reçu une magnifique selle Childeric offerte par Running Fox, le commanditaire de longue date de la Médaille EEC. Les huit premières cavalières au classement final ont eu droit à une couverture séchante tandis que les 16 participantes recevaient un splendide licol Walsh. Tous ces prix étaient offerts par Running Fox. Running Fox commandite également les quatre finales régionales qui se déroulent à l’échelle canadienne.

Les quatre autres finalistes sont : la vice-championne Chelsea Walsh, Jessie Jia (troisième) et Sarah Barker (quatrième).

Championnats nord-américains pour Juniors et Jeunes cavaliers et poursuivre des études universitaires après avoir terminé son secondaire.

Lexy Paynter, une résidente de Richmond, Î.-P.-E., âgée de 16 ans, a conclu une saison haute en couleurs avec une septième position au classement général des finales de la Médaille de Saut d’obstacles Canada au Royal Horse Show de Toronto, Ontario, sur la selle de Famous, un warmblood de 12 ans appartenant à Jennifer Sarsfield. Très compétitive tout au long de la saison de concours qui avait débuté pour elle en Floride au tout début de 2014, Paynter a également obtenu des résultats scolaires exceptionnels en étudiant par correspondance, soit des notes de plus de 90 % dans toutes ses matières. En 2012, Paynter avait représenté l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard aux Championnats équestres interprovinciaux du Canada à Bromont, Québec, avec Roman K, son warmblood canadien de 12 ans. Concurrente junior, elle y a remporté la médaille de bronze de saut d’obstacles en individuel et faisait partie de l’équipe qui a décroché le bronze. Paynter prévoit obtenir un diplôme universitaire en sciences dès qu’elle a terminé ses études secondaires. En ce qui concerne ses aspirations équestres, Paynter souhaite continuer à progresser dans les niveaux juniors/sauteurs amateurs avec Roman K.

Originaire de Halifax, N.-É., Evan Phinney, 20 ans, s’est joint aux Junior Bengal Lancers de Halifax à l’âge de sept ans. Grâce au cursus de l’école d’équitation des Lancers, Phinney est devenue une cavalière très polyvalente qui s’y connaît aussi bien en soins des chevaux et en régie d’écurie qu’en équitation. Concourant au niveau Or depuis 2011, elle a obtenu régulièrement de bons résultats dans les épreuves de saut d’obstacles de 1,10 m, de 1,15 m et de 1,20 m. En 2014, Phinney s’est qualifiée pour les finales nationales de la Médaille EEC au concours Royal West à Calgary en Alberta. Elle y a obtenu une huitième place pour la phase de saut d’obstacles et elle a terminé douzième au classement général aux commandes de Bling, sa jument warmblood américaine de 12 ans. Toujours avec Bling, Phinney a aussi gagné l’épreuve Mini Prix de 1,20 m lors de la troisième semaine de l’International Bromont. Actuellement inscrite à l’Université Acadia, Phinney en est à sa troisième année d’études en administration des affaires.

Saut d’obstacles Canada est heureux de dévoiler les noms des jeunes athlètes désignés comme lauréats de la Bourse d’études de Saut d’obstacles Canada pour l’année 2014.

Conscient des difficultés auxquelles font face les jeunes cavaliers qui poursuivent leurs études tout en concourant à un niveau élevé, Saut d’obstacles Canada a mis sur pied un programme de bourses s’adressant aux athlètes de 14 à 21 ans en chasse, saut d’obstacles et équitation. La mise de fonds initiale de 5 000 $ a été obtenue en 2002 grâce à un généreux don de Samuel Group of Companies. Saut d’obstacles Canada continue depuis d’offrir une somme équivalant à celle reçue, ce qui porte le total des bourses offertes à 10 000 $.

« Je suis persuadé que de soutenir nos jeunes athlètes et d’investir dans leur avenir est l’un des gestes les plus importants que Saut d’obstacles Canada peut poser », a dit Mark Samuel, l’un des fondateurs du programme de bourse de Saut d’obstacles Canada et membre du Comité. « Je suis fier du rôle que joue le programme de bourse dans l’atteinte de cet objectif et je félicite les lauréats de cette année qui méritent grandement cet honneur. »

Voici les jeunes athlètes à qui ont été décernées les Bourses de Saut d’obstacles Canada s’élevant à 2000 $ chacune :

Kathryn Beunder, 14 ans (Calgary, Alberta), a commencé à monter à cheval à l’âge de huit ans. Concourant à la fois en chasse et en saut d’obstacles avec grand succès, Beunder fait preuve d’une grande polyvalence en selle. De 2012 à 2014, Beunder a travaillé comme cavalière du Colour Guard au Special Features Department de Spruce Meadows où elle participe aux présentations en manège. En 2013, elle a été nommée cavalière HITS Thermal du mois de février pour la constance de ses résultats en compétition. Toujours en 2013, Beunder a porté les couleurs du Canada aux Jeux de l’amitié de l’Allemagne Sparkassen qui ont eu lieu à Herford, Allemagne. Elle prenait part aux épreuves de saut d’obstacle en équipe. Avec pour objectif de concourir dans les épreuves de Mini médaille EEC et de Médaille EEC avec son jeune cheval, Beunder est passée de la division des chevaux de chasse pour enfants en 2013 à celle de junior/sauteur amateur en 2014. À long terme, Beunder souhaite participer aux

Au jeune âge de 15 ans, Samantha Starratt de Calgary, Alberta, est déjà une habituée des concours internationaux. Elle a représenté le Canada à l’édition 2013 de la finale internationale Enfants FEI au Brésil où elle s’est classée au 11e rang en individuel et où elle était membre de l’équipe ayant remporté l’or, et ce, même si elle montait un cheval qui lui avait été prêté pour l’occasion. Starratt a commencé à monter à cheval à l’âge de deux ans, a participé à son premier camp d’équitation à cinq ans et a fait son premier concours hippique à sept ans. Aujourd’hui, elle concourt dans les épreuves de saut d’obstacles jusqu’à 1,30 m, tout en conservant une moyenne scolaire de 86 %. Dans sa passion pour l’équitation, Starratt aime particulièrement entraîner de jeunes chevaux et aider d’autres cavaliers à l’écurie. Dernièrement, Starratt a été nommée comme membre de l’équipe Jump Alberta pour les épreuves de 1,20 m lors d’un concours à la manière de la Coupe des nations à Sacramento en Californie. Starratt qui souhaite devenir chiropraticienne pour humains ou pour chevaux, a pour objectif une participation aux Championnats nord-américains pour Juniors et Jeunes cavaliers et, qui sait, un jour de devenir membre de l’équipe olympique canadienne en saut d’obstacles.

Justine Tainsh, 22 ans, de Calgary, Alberta, a monté à cheval pour la première fois à la ferme d’élevage et d’entraînement de standardbred de ses grands-parents. Pendant plusieurs années, elle a aiguisé ses compétences de cavalière dans diverses divisions de chasse et de saut d’obstacles avec plusieurs chevaux différents. N’ayant pas été propriétaire depuis cinq ans, Tainsh a réalisé son rêve cette année lorsqu’elle a enfin pu faire l’acquisition de son propre cheval en avril. Christina 14, une Westphalienne de neuf ans, et Tainsh ont été couronnées championnes dans la division de 1,20 m cette saison et ont accédé aux épreuves de 1,30 m. En plus de s’être fixé l’objectif de participer aux épreuves de 1,40 m, Tainsh aspire à devenir avocate spécialisée en environnement et en énergie après avoir terminé son baccalauréat en psychologie.

Chaque année, Saut d’obstacles Canada sélectionne des candidats pour le Programme de bourses aux jeunes athlètes parmi les demandes reçues. Les candidatures sont évaluées au mérite. Jochen Schleese recevait en 1985 le titre de Maître sellier. Il était le plus jeune en Europe à recevoir une telle distinction. En 1986, on lui a demandé de devenir le sellier officiel des Championnats mondiaux de dressage qui se sont tenus en banlieue nord de Toronto au Canada. Cavalier de concours complet sur la scène internationale, il s’est qualifié pour les championnats européens de 1984. C’est sur cette expérience que Jochen a fondé la plupart de ses recherches et innovations au sein de Schleese au fil des années. Liz a occupé le poste de chef d’équipe pour le CDIO3* de 2014 à Wellington.

Comme plusieurs le savent déjà, l’année 2012 fut une année difficile pour le dressage au Canada. Depuis, nous sommes secoués et nous voilà devenus plus forts que jamais!

Dressage Canada a pavé une nouvelle voie vers l’excellence avec l’organisation de la Quinzaine floridienne en janvier 2014, qui avait pour objectif de mettre nos cavaliers en relation avec toute une gamme de professionnels en mesure de les aider à se perfectionner dans tous les volets de leur travail. Cette approche a eu beaucoup de succès et notre équipe a porté dignement les couleurs du Canada aux Jeux équestres mondiaux de 2014, réalisant de solides performances, tant en individuel qu’en équipe.

Les Jeux panaméricains de 2015 auront lieu chez nous en juillet prochain et nous avons dans notre équipe des cavaliers et des chevaux qui ont les moyens de remporter l’or. Pour qu’ils puissent réaliser cet objectif, nous devons tout faire pour appuyer nos athlètes.

Dressage Canada a constitué une remarquable équipe d’experts pour soutenir nos athlètes. Cette équipe est formée du Dr Volker Moritz, conseiller technique, du Dr Geoff Vernon, vétérinaire de l’équipe, et Dirk Stroda, entraîneur spécialiste des capacités mentales. Ces experts fourniront aux cavaliers et à leurs montures le soutien dont ils auront besoin pour nous faire honneur devant nos partisans à domicile.

Nos athlètes ont également besoin de votre soutien à vous. La deuxième édition de la mise aux enchères de Dressage Canada est l’un des moyens grâce auxquels nous amassons des fonds pour le soutien de nos athlètes. Le prestigieux Prix d’excellence Petro-Canada aux entraîneurs décerné

à Andrea Taylor

En ce crépuscule de l’année 2014, il est maintenant temps de réfléchir, de célébrer et d’établir les objectifs de 2015. L’une des réussites à célébrer

plus particulièrement est la remise du Prix d’excellence Petro-Canada aux entraîneurs à l’entraîneure de para-dressage Andrea Taylor, en reconnaissance de ses réalisations aux Jeux équestres mondiaux Alltech FEI de 2014. En effet, en tant qu’entraîneure certifiée de niveau 3, Taylor a dirigé à ce titre l’équipe canadienne de para-dressage et entraîné Lauren Barwick vers les médailles d’argent et de bronze remportées à bord de Off to Paris, une jument oldenbourg de 13 ans appartenant à Canada Hippique.

« C’est avec beaucoup de fierté que j’accepte ce prix au nom de l’ensemble de l’équipe canadienne, et en particulier de ma collègue Mary Longden, elle aussi entraîneure de l’équipe », souligne Taylor, qui devait posséder la certification du Programme national de certification des entraîneurs (PNCE) afin d’être admissible au prix. « Un groupe de personnes travaillantes et concentrées est essentiel pour aider les membres de l’équipe à accomplir leur travail, dans ce cas-ci gagner, sur la scène internationale. »

« J’adore entraîner et essayer de déterminer ce dont chaque couple cavalier-cheval nécessite pour être à son meilleur. Il doit y avoir un engagement réciproque, et c’est ce qui s’est passé à ces jeux. L’immense succès de Lauren et d’Off to Paris en France m’a rendue

très fière d’être entraîneure et de compter parmi les nombreux passionnés de cette discipline extraordinaire de dressage », ajoute-t-elle.

Les Prix d’excellence Petro-Canada aux entraîneurs ont été décernés le 7 novembre 2014 à Ottawa lors de la Cérémonie de remise des prix du leadership sportif. Ces prestigieux prix annuels rendent hommage aux entraîneurs dont les athlètes se sont distingués aux championnats du monde, aux Jeux olympiques et paralympiques et aux Jeux olympiques spéciaux mondiaux.

Canada Hippique a commencé à saluer ses entraîneurs et instructeurs certifiés en créant une toque en série limitée. Celle-ci leur permet d’afficher fièrement leur certification aux termes du PNCE de Canada Hippique. Il n’en reste que quelques-unes, mais vous avez toujours la chance d’obtenir la vôtre! le spOrtif HandiCapé de l’année

Roberta Sheffield, une membre de l’Équipe équestre canadienne ayant représenté le pays aux Jeux équestres mondiaux FEI Alltech de 2014, a reçu le prix du Lincolnshire pour le sportif handicapé de l’année.

Sheffield, qui est établie au Lincolnshire, Royaume-Uni, a reçu cette distinction à la suite de ses récents succès portant les couleurs du Canada. La très chic cérémonie de remise des prix a eu lieu le 6 novembre 2014.

« Je ne pensais jamais pouvoir gagner ce prix, surtout pas après avoir vu les vidéos des deux autres athlètes en nomination », a dit Sheffield, qui a terminé au pied du podium des JEM cette année après avoir reçu une note de 70,200 % assortie d’une quatrième place, pour sa superbe reprise libre de catégorie III sur Bindro T, le warmblood hollandais de huit ans d’Evelyn Little. « J’étais bouche bée lorsqu’on a annoncé que j’avais gagné. »

« C’était merveilleux de recevoir cet honneur, mais il n’aurait pu m’être accordé sans l’aide de Canada Hippique, et sans les efforts de mon équipe, mes entraîneurs personnels, les propriétaires de mes chevaux et les autres membres de l’équipe à domicile. J’espère avoir bien représenté le Canada, autant dans ma région que devant le monde entier », ajoute Sheffield.

Ce prix est décerné à une personne âgée d’au moins 18 ans au 6 novembre 2013 qui a fait preuve de réalisations personnelles exceptionnelles sur la scène locale, régionale, nationale ou internationale.

Prix Boehringer Ingelheim- Canada Hippique pour la santé et le bien-être des chevaux

Le prix Boehringer Ingelheim-Canada Hippique pour la santé et le bien-être des chevaux rend hommage à une personne ou un organisme qui

contribue directement à l’amélioration de la santé et du bien-être des che-vaux depuis longtemps.

Ce prix comprend une plaque de reconnaissance remise au récipiendaire, la publication de sa biographie dans le livret du gala annuel de remise des prix de Canada Hippique, ainsi qu’un voyage payé au gala. En outre, un don de 1000 $ est versé à une œuvre de bienfaisance équestre au choix du récipiendaire. Le tout, grâce à l’appui de Canada Hippique et à un don de Boehringer Ingelheim (Canada) ltée.

Date limite de mise en candidature : Le 12 février 2015.

Critères» La santé et le bien-être du cheval englobe notamment,

mais ne se limite pas à, la régie des troupeaux, l’élaboration de lignes directrices en matière de bien-être, la réduction du nombre de blessures, la rééducation, la retraite, la sécurité globale, l’adoption, le bien-être au moment de la transformation, la prévention des maladies et l’application des règles et règlements relatifs au bien-être des chevaux.

» Les organismes et membres individuels du milieu équestre peuvent proposer des candidats.

» Le prix est remis selon le mérite des candidats proposés. Il n’est pas nécessairement octroyé à chaque année.

» Le récipiendaire (ou son représentant) doit être disponible et disposé à assister à la cérémonie de reconnaissance du gala annuel de remise des prix de Canada Hippique. Il doit aussi être prêt à participer à d’autres activités de reconnaissance selon les besoins, par exemple à des entrevues avec les médias. Par ailleurs, un communiqué de presse est distribué aux médias de l’ensemble du pays et des renseignements
