Introduction

Wielkopolska has been well known for its long history of stables and breeding facilities that have played a part in the development of horse breeding in Poland. The centres in Iwno, Racot, Pępowo, and Golejewko are a good example. The Stud Stable in Sieraków stands out as an important one, with its be-ginnings dating back to 1828! Whereas the Gostyń area is considered the centre of carriage makers. Also, in the town of Sza-mocin, near Chodzież, to this day it is possib-le to purchase a horse at a traditional horse market which has been in operation since the

th19 century.

Various tours on horseback are available in Wielkopolska. You may take advantage of many opportunities to relax in the saddle, depending on time available, skill level, and particular interests. Besides the scenic riding trails and everything that this region has to offer as part of the equestrian experience, along the way you will find many interesting places to enjoy, relax in, and explore while out of the saddle.

The trail goes through the heart of the Prze-męt Landscape Park including the towns of: Górsko, Radomierz, Osłonin, Nowa Wieś and Perkowo. This trail connects to the Trzebidza Trail in Starkowo. Przemęt Landscape Park – it was estab-lished in 1991 to preserve part of the Lesz-czyńskie Lake District comprising an area of 20,000 ha. Numerous post-glacial forma-tions have formed the diversified topogra-phy of the park with various hills and sand dunes. There are 24 lakes within its bounda-ries, the largest of which are: Dominickie and Przemęckie lakes. This region is attracti-ve both due to its scenery and to its culture since it boasts some outstanding relics of

th thsacral architecture from 17 to 19 centuries, palaces and park-like gardens, as well as a tra-ditional manor and cottages. The park inclu-des some botanical treasures, among them: sundew, Turk’s cap Lilly, and the unique pink Lilly-of-the-valley. It is an outstanding place for bird watching including some rare bird species, among them the bearded titmouse, whose male has a characteristically black co-loration around the beak that resembles a moustache. This bird’s sound is reminiscent of the bell chimes. The Lilly of the Valley Island – this is a landscape preserve on the island of the Radomierskie Lake that connects to the Przemęt Lake. Its rare springtime treasure are the fields of the Lilly-of-the-valley flowers that have pink stamen bases.Bog on the Holy Lake - this preserve on Jezioro Święte is home to some protected species of bog flora such as sundew and bog horsetail.Babulina – this is a hill with the highest elevation in the Wolsztyn district that reaches 112 meters above the sea level.Napoleon’s Chaise – this is a clay hill on which, according to legend, Napoleon took his rest while on his way to Russia.Kaszczor – a post-Cistercian church from

th th18 century and a 19 -century post windmill.

Włoszakowice – it was a hometown of the famous composer and conductor Karol Kur-piński (1785–1857), who wrote the patriotic song “Warszawianka” and the opera “Kra-kowiacy i Górale.” This town also boasts an 18th-century Sułkowskich hunting palace (built on the triangular plan) and an interes-ting Baroque church of the Holy Trinity.

Wolsztyn – it has been known for the Roundhouse and the Skansen of Folk Architecture in Western Wielkopolska. Robert Koch, the discoverer of the tubercular bacte-

thrium, lived and worked here in the 19 century. It is worthwhile to visit the Regional Museum of Marcin Rożek, an accompolished sculptor who among others has sculpted the statues of the Sawer in Luboń, Fryderyk Chopin in Poznań, and Bolesław Chrobry in Gniezno.

Osowa Sień – it is home to a Gothic church of St. Fabian and Sebastian with a wooden tower, a Neo-Renaissance palace, a Classicist manor by the church, and another manor from the same period situated near a mag-nificent chestnut alley.

Wieleń Zaobrzański – visitors may find here a late Baroque church of the Blessed Mary that was built by the Cistersians. Inside the church is a miraculous Gothic sculpture of the Blessed Mary of Wieleń that has drawn many pilgrimages. Near the church is

than eclectic manor from the turn of the 19 thand 20 centuries.

Przemęt – at the beginning of this town’s history, it was in the hands of Silesian Dukes and later of the king Władysław Jagiełło. Before the war with the Tutonic Knights, the king borrowed money pawning the town of Przemęt. In 1409, he permitted the Cister-sians to purchase the town and they have run

thit till the 19 century, which is when it was closed by the Prussians. The Baroque church of St. John the Baptist is all that has remained to this day.

Rakoniewice – this town is proud of its Wielkopolskie Museum of Fire Fighting that was established in the ‘70s in a former church building. Its collection includes both old and modern fire-fighting vehicles. The local archi-tecture includes some beautiful old structures with the characteristic half-timbered walls.

Obra – This is a village where the Cystersian thmonks settled in the 13 century. Since 1926

this facility has been in the hands of the Gathering of the Oblat Missionaries of the Immaculate Virgin Mary.

Since 1926

this facility has been in the hands of the Gathering of the Oblat Missionaries of the Immaculate Virgin Mary.

you may earn a badge called “Horse Lover – Everyone in Poland Rides Horses”?

In 2002, a descendant of General Chłapowski, Antoni Chłapowski, who runs the Equestrian Centre in Jaszkowo has come up with the initiative called “Everyone in Poland Rides Horses.” Following a similar initiative conceived in Sweden, its purpose is to promote horse riding and to spark in people of all ages an active interest in attaining basic equestrian knowledge and riding skills. This badge may be received only after passing a test in horse riding.

Neo-Gothic style was renovated in the be-thginning of 19 century by General Dezyde-

ry Chłapowski. He became a historical fi-gure through his involvement in fostering good farming management approach on his property and has thus been credited for laying the foundation for the development of modern agriculture in Poland. A former Napoelonic soldier, he learned about agri-culture from the ground up at farms in other countries including France. Once he com-pleted his foreign education, he transferred his then-new knowledge to his estate. The Dezydery Chłapowski Landscape Park, founded in 1992, has to this day retained the original agricultural landscape of that area thanks to his transformative efforts. Choryń – there is an old manor dating back

thto the end of the 18 century, a so-called new manor converted around 1820 from a farm utility building. Adam Mickiewicz was hosted here by Józef Taczanowski. Among its later owners was General Edmund Tacza-nowski, one of the military leaders of the 1863-1846 January Uprising.

Worth Seeing:

The Landscape Park of the Barycz River Valley – it is a park established in 1996 covering an area of 87,000 hectares. It is known for a preserve called the Milic-kie Ponds, a cluster of fish ponds that ori-

thginated in the beginning of the 13 cen-tury. It has been regarded as one of the most significant marsh preserve areas with water estuaries. And it has been included in the registry of the international conven-tion RAMSAR, as well as in the UN Living Lakes program for being one of barely ten such areas in the world. It is an excellent habitat for many bird species.Huta Stara – a Protestant church and an old cemetery are located in this village.

thMoja Wola – a 19 -century hunting lodge with an old park.Możdżanów – worthy of attention are: a

thhunting manor from the turn of the 19 thand 20 centuries and an old forest district
