Roman Catholic vs. Protestant Conflict

Page 4: EQ: Why did Northern Ireland want to be controlled by UK?

The Republic of Ireland was colonized by England.

Ireland created the Irish Republican Army (IRA) planning to rebel against England.

Government of Ireland Act: This act created two governments that each control a part of Ireland.

Northern Ireland wanted to stay under the rule of England because Northern Ireland is majority protestant as well as England. However, Ireland is majority Roman Catholic.

The Troubles The Catholics that remained in Northern Ireland were discriminated

against by Ulster Defense Association (UDA). They were forced to live in separate areas, they weren’t hired for certain jobs that were only available for protestants, they weren’t allowed the same voting practices, etc.

War began between IRA and Protestant for the right to access political power, social provision, and cultural recognition.

Bloody Sunday A crowd of Irish protesters stormed towards the British army troops and the

British felt threatened. 26 of the protesters and bystanders were shot by British army.

Hunger Strike IRA Prisoners were arrested because they were rebelling against the North. IRA prisoners wanted to not be seen as criminals. They refused to work, wear uniforms, and they wanted a ‘special category

status’ in the prison.
