The fashion-starved
residents on the Isle of
Axholme can now find some
of the country’s leading
labels right on their
doorstep, with the opening
of NE1, Epworth village’s
first major menswear outlet.
Founded by local resident Mike Harm, the store

duck and cover, Firetrap, Superdry, Cross Hatch
and Original by Penguin, Kickers and IKON.
With a background in fashion management, Mike believes NE1 is perfectly
positioned to outfit fashion-conscious locals.
“There‟s no other menswear store
within 20 miles,” said Mike, “
and the brands we‟re launching
with are exactly what people are
looking for. We‟re already talking
with other high profile labels, and
we‟ll be adding new ranges for the
Autumn/Winter season.”

Did you know 7th August is Sisters Day?
It is a day to show your appreciation for that
special family relationship. All siblings have the
odd argument here and there, but deep down
there‘s little way around the natural bond of
siblings. Make this 7th August a special day for
your sister, by however you feel is best. If you
don‘t have a sister, you can still celebrate the
friendships of sisterhood by having a girl‘s night
out! Treat your sister to a beauty treatment at
Sunspot or Charlottes Mobile Beauty who are
both regular advertisers.
New to Epworth is ‘Fish n Feet’ at
Sunspot, Station Road, Epworth. Did you
know The Garra Rufa Fish where discovered in
the early 1800's in the coastal rivers in southern
turkey. They are commonly know as the
'Doctor Fish'. Their medicinal benefits were
discovered by chance by a shepherd with an injured foot who stumbled upon a hot spring
and proceeded to bathe his foot. The little fishes
surrounded his foot and nibbled at his
wound. The Shepherd then realised his wound
had healed. Have no fear! the doctor fish do
not have any teeth. Their painless sucking
removes the dead skin off your feet with their
delicate mouths, leaving them softer and
smoother than any cosmetic pedicure. If you
fancy the experience give Sunspot a call, see
main advert on page 5.
Again thank you to all the advertisers and
everyone who sends me articles on a regular
basis; and of course my delivery people who do
a really good job come rain or shine.
Enjoy the read and have a fabulous Summer! The deadline for September issue is
Friday 12h August.

During the period 2nd to 4th June
2012, St Andrew’s Church,
Epworth, will be hosting an
exhibition in celebration of the
Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. To mark
this special event, items of memorabilia, printed
articles, photographs, memories etc spanning
the life of the queen are required by the organising
committee for use during the activity period. We
have already been offered the loan of a medal and
service sheet received by a male chorister for
singing in the coronation choir. He will also visit
the exhibition and share his experiences of the
event.
Any items on loan to the church will, of course, be
cared for and returned to the owners. You may
also be interested in volunteering to help stage the
exhibition and/or perform the duties of stewards.

The Isle Group of the
Lincolnshire Wildlife
Trust are trying a new venture
by having a moth morning instead
of a moth night so that we don‘t
have to stay up late but can have a
leisurely look at moths in the morning. This will
take place on Sunday August 28th from 8.30am –
11am at Chris and Geoff Trinder‘s house, The
Croft, Carrhouse Road, Belton. A number of moth
traps will be set up in various locations in the Isle
on Saturday evening and brought to Belton on the
Sunday morning, where they will be opened up for
everyone to see the variety of species found in our
area.
The light in the special moth traps attracts them
and they settle in the large box, then they are
released the following morning after being identi-
fied and recorded. People who would like to take
photographs of any of the moths will have the
opportunity to do this too. To make the morning
more enjoyable we will be providing breakfast of
bacon sandwiches, toast, coffee, tea etc for every-
one at a cost of £3.
Anyone is welcome to come you don‘t have to be
a member, bring along any friends and family too. It
would be helpful if you could let us know a day or
two beforehand if you would like to come, in or-
der to organize the catering.
Bird food is always on sale at Geoff‘s house in
Belton, at very competitive prices, just ring if you
need anything. For further information about the
local Trust group and their meetings please contact
Geoff or Chris Trinder on 01427 872051.

Beware!! Children’s
Cancer Charity
Telephone Call Scam! I have today been contacted by a
person claiming to be putting together
a calendar to raise funds for a
children‘s cancer charity.
I have been contacted by this company
before and found out that it was a
scam. The telephone number they
called from is 01695 576275 and the
person spoke with a Liverpool accent.
I have contacted the police who have
confirmed that these people are not
from a charity and it is indeed a scam.
They usually ask if you would like to
advertise on the Calendar and usually
aim at businesses. Please do not pay
them any money.

The Lincolnshire Golf Club and Restaurant, Crowle.
A Delightful Sunday lunch Experience.
The winding drive (off the A161) up to the former Hirst Priory estate is flanked by green lush grass incorporating a
charming cricket field on the left and fairways a little further up on the right.
You then approach the car park adjoining the Lincolnshire Golf Clubhouse and within, the restaurant operated by
Shane and Lesley Jarman.
Shane a former winner of Britain’s Pastry Chef of the year, his wife Lesley and
enthusiastic staff give you a warm welcome to their bar and restaurant.
They serve food seven days a week and especially welcome not only their regular
golfers but visitors from a wide area. One lady on an adjoining table Mrs Mavis
Bellwood of Doncaster told me „I follow Shane wherever he goes‟. They encourage
private parties, special events and many discerning diners, all having pre-booked.
We were there for Sunday Lunch in the light, airy and spacious conservatory attached
to the former stables in the old walled garden of the Priory. Lesley told us that they
can seat 50 covers indoors with views of the west face of the Priory through trees,
the small courtyard and even the first tee of the golf course, it is very pretty indeed.
On entering and being seated at our well spaced table, the first thing noticed is the
two fresh roses in a vase on all of the beautifully laid tables and comfortable chairs.
Lunch is served between 12pm-4.30pm, with two or three courses with a remarkable
£12.00 and £15.75 price attached, incidentally no credit or debit cards are accepted.
Turning over the page of the weekly changed inspired menu (all personally produced
by Shane, a nice touch) one is surprised and delighted by the lunchtime fare on offer,
there being six choices of starters, eight mains, and five desserts. Extra sides and main
course supplements are available at a small extra cost.
To start we chose the Air dried ham salad with fresh watermelon, sweet tomato &
basil, and Chef‘s seafood platter with sweet chilli & sherry dressing. They were both
mouth watering and most acceptable to the palette, both beautifully presented.
By this stage you know you are in for a thrill, and after completing your starter you
are filled with anticipation.
One of our choices for main course was the Slow roasted silverside of beef
accompanied by Yorkshire pudding (well done only, there is also sirloin on offer
medium rare only) and Pan fried fillet of lamb, scented with Moroccan spices, sweet onion & Parma ham, served with
cous cous salad this dish being unusual and enchanting, all accompanied with a tureen of fresh seasonal vegetables.
I had difficulty choosing from five appealing desserts in that all the choices were to my liking; however I finally settled
on the Citrus tart with plump raspberries, fruit sorbet and fresh mint. The presentation of this dish stunned me being
laid on oval marble.
For sure one felt relaxed and satisfied whilst dining, Lesley and her staff were most polite, attentive and not
overbearing. It seemed to us that nothing was too much trouble for them and obviously they enjoyed meeting new
people. I did suggest a fan might be an added welcome
addition for the hotter weather being under glass.
Having no previous knowledge this superb Isle of Axholme
restaurant tucked away in the North Lincolnshire
countryside just south of Crowle railway station, it was
frankly the very best of a Sunday Lunch for anyone‘s purse.
Have a look at their website
www.lincolnshiregolfclub.co.uk
or telephone Shane or Lesley on 01724 711621 for
your booking.

AXHOLME CENTRAL POLICE REPORT
Fieldside/Battle Green/Studcross/Thurlow/
Memorial Hall Car Park areas in Epworth –
Youths causing annoyance/anti-social be-
haviour.
The problem with youths causing annoyance con-
tinues around this area. Analysis from reports to
police shows that the main days of complaints are
on a Monday, Wednesday and Thursday between
4pm and 2pm. The main crime being committed in this area is criminal damage, particularly to vehicles.
We are therefore re-iterating the message that it is in your best interest to park, if at all possible, in your
garages or on your driveways, and perhaps review your car security arrangements as an extra precaution.
The majority of criminal damage is being committed on a Tuesday and Saturday between 10.00 pm and
01.00 am.
Update: We are still receiving calls relating to groups of youths gathering in the car park.
We have been given some registration numbers of vehicles involved and have given relevant
warnings to those concerned. Should they not heed to our warning there is the potential for
their vehicle to be seized by police. Patrols continue to monitor the car park and have no-
ticed the groups only gather when the hall is not being used. We are working with our part-
ners and the Thurlow Playing Fields Association to try to resolve these issues. We encour-
age local residents observing such anti-social behaviour in these areas to contact us on 0845
6060 222 with as much detail and descriptions of offenders as possible. It is better to ring
and report when such an occurrence happens.
Stepping Stones Nursery, Epworth – Anti-social behaviour, youths causing annoyance and
criminal damage.
Reports are being received that the building is being frequented by youths and there has already been
some damage caused. The building is in a quiet area and thus is attractive to youths congregating. These
premises are adjoining to the car park, church, and play area and as such make it a particularly favourable.
Neighbourhood staff and incident response officers will be making patrols in the area and any youths
found on these private premises will be dealt with accordingly.
Recent Issues
Drink driver arrested and charged =A man was pulled over in his car by police recently due to his
erratic manner of driving. He failed a roadside breath test and at the police station provided a sample of
breath measuring 82mcg alcohol in 100 ml of breath. The limit is 35mcg. He was rightly punished and was
disqualified from driving at court. Male summonsed for driving offences = A suspicious car was
stopped by police on the Isle. The driver was asked to produce his documents, which he failed to do so as
he did not have any, or a licence. He was summonsed to court. Please make sure your car insurance is up
to date and your driving licence displays the correct details. Suspicious vehicle = A car was observed
by police in Belton driving erratically. He was stopped and his actions caused police to search his vehicle.
Within the car police recovered a number of weapons, and the male was arrested. He was later charged
to court where he will answer for his actions.
Sneak In thieves = Now that we are in the summer months and the weather is somewhat warmer, we
would like to remind residents to make sure that windows and doors are closed and secured. Thieves will
take any opportunity they can to enter insecure properties and steal things like car keys (and cars!), mo-
bile phones, laptops etc, whether you are in your home or garden at the time.
If you see anybody acting suspiciously we would appreciate a call on our non-emergency number 0845
6060 222 or on 999 if you believe a crime is in progress. A description of the offender is always helpful.

Rescue Day 2011 opened with a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, its Rolls
Royce Merlin Engine could be heard before it flew over head, the pilot, Dunc Mason then went on to thrill
the crowd with an absolutely superb display. This really set the scene for the rest of the event with
fantastic Road Traffic Collision extrication displays from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, the EMAS
HART team, Humberside Police and BDV Group Ltd, displays took place in the morning and afternoon of
the event. The Humberside Police Dogs carried out two excellent displays with the dogs showing their
courageous speed and strength and that they were more than a match for an armed robber acted out by
one of the Police dog handlers.
The Red Devils Parachute display team were outstanding as ever and even with a stiff breeze they
displayed pinpoint accuracy dropping into the lake from around 5000 feet.
They were picked up by Humber Rescue, Doncaster Sub Aqua and Watersafe UK Search and Rescue with
equal precision and they received a standing ovation from the crowd as they circled the lake. Once again
we had three helicopters on the ground at Rescue Day 2011, the Lincs and Nott‘s Air Ambulance,
Humberside Police Helicopter and the Mighty Seaking Search and Rescue Helicopter from Royal Air Force
Leconfield. All were on the ground for over two hours and were enjoyed by members of the public who
were shown round the aircraft and talked to the Aircrew. The Seaking once again took off and then
passed over the lake to the thrills of the crowd.
The AA Rescue Team also got into the act and displayed their multi-agency approach assisting the
Emergency Services rescue teams to secure and recover a car that had been ‗driven into the lake‘. North
Yorkshire Police off road teams displayed their skills over difficult terrain and actually navigated one of the
smaller lakes showing real motorbike handling skills. Doncaster and Thorne Sub Aqua Club provided a
display showing procedures for divers in distress and their recovery.
Without doubt the Newfoundland Rescue Dogs from the EMAS HART teams proved a massive hit, these
dogs have big hearts and immense strength which was displayed throughout the day with Watersafe UK
Search and Rescue, during the Grand Finale, these gentle giants hauled in the Humberside Fire and Rescue
Swift water rescue swimmers, the Newfoundland‘s handlers and several more ‗casualties‘ in one go to the
cheers of the crowds. Members of the public were provided with static displays and safety information
from various other Emergency Services such as Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue, York‘s and Lincs Search
and Rescue 4 X 4 Response, The Coast Guard, MFC Survival Ltd, Doncaster and Thorne Sub Aqua Club
and St Johns Ambulance Service.
Members of the public were treated to boat trips throughout the day on Indipup, an old lifeboat which
actually saw action during the Icelandic Fishing furore, and which is now having a much more sedentary life
with Burton Stather Heritage Group.
The Day could not have happened without the tremendous work by the Rescue Day Committee nor
without the generosity of 7 Lakes and our other Sponsors, BDV Group Ltd and Alf Kitchen Ltd.
Volunteer Groups such as FODSA and the Lost and Lonely Scooter club as well as members of the
Emergency Services giving up their time freely also ensured the success of the day and the committee are
truly grateful for their continuing support.
John Armson, said; ―Finally I would like to pass on my sincere thanks to and on behalf of the Rescue Day
committee to all the aforementioned teams and organisations providing displays and assets to make the
day so special and to members of the public for attending this year and for their attention to the Road and
Water safety messages which remains one of the primary aims of Rescue Day. Rescue Day 2012 planning
is already underway and will take place in July , the date yet to be finalised.
Best Regards
John Armson On Behalf of the Rescue Day Committee

Where You Live Your Local History Adapted by Anthony Catherall
TEMPLE BELWOOD
Temple Belwood was occupied in pre-Iron Age days. The Druids about 660 B.C. held a ‘Beltane’ or festival in a ‘grove of oaks’ hence the name Bel-wood. The festival of sacrifice held by the Druids was meant to show that ‘fire purifies’. The festival apparently was conducted as follows: -
The sacrifice was garlanded with flowers by the Druids who are also singing The Druids ceased singing and everyone laid flat on the ground The Druids led the sacrifice to the ‘Circle’ and the Chief Druid led her to the ‘Stone’
Everyone sing: - “ praise be to the oak whose strength is supreme who defyeth the winds the thunder and stream
Accept of the Blood
of that which is goo to atone for the evil that has come to Belwood”. The bodies of good and evil were placed on the stone and the ‘fire that purifies’ was lit
Later in history the Saxons occupied the site and it was raided by the Danes.
In 1144 it was given by Roger de Mowbray to the Knight’s Templar’s, a religious military order. In 1327 the Knight’s Templar’s formed a monastic institution, built a monastery and destroyed all the Druid’s buildings as well as the oaks. In 1536 with the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry V111,
Temple Belwood passed to the Vavasour family. It remained in the family for four generations. Thomas Vavasour, who at the time of Vermuyden’s drainage, acted as legal advisor for the Isle Commoners, had to sell Temple Belwood because of the debts incurred in defending the Commoner’s rights. John Ryther and later the Popplewell family owned Temple Belwood. Robert Ryther was at the head of a mob to burn down Nathaniel Reading’s house during the drainage troubles. Robert Popplewell acted as legal advisor for the Isle Commoners. The Johnson family inherited the estate after the Popplewell family died out; the mansion house was built by the son of Allan Johnson. It is about the Johnson family that this little tale relates: -
“On Jackdaw’s walk there is a mark for people to behold. “Twas Maixe’s mother held the ladder whilst Johnson hid the gold”.
The gold has remained hidden and a mystery has arisen. The estate of 2,113 acres was split up in 1897. Part of it was used as a Borstal, a school and even as a hotel. In the Second World War it became a derelict ruin and was used by the Home Guard as a training ground. Its final demise came when the M 180 motorway was eventually built in 1977. Today the Obelisk is situated close to the Motorway and a walled garden survives. In a nearby patch of wood there is a moated building that may or may not have been part of the complex in ancient times.

Now & Then – Then & Now No.28 by Anthony Catherall
This month and every month; see Epworth in bygone days and compare to today’s images!
A familiar sight in the High Street is the Kilham Chapel, named after Alexander Kilham the founder, of the New Connexion 0ne of the many breakaway movements from mainstream Methodism with the
former manse adjoining and opposite the White Bear public house. Probably an early 1930’s picture the former Chapel having a boundary wall, gates and small shrubbery fronting it. I have often wondered
why and for what reason the porch way was removed, does anybody know? Then, even the telegraph poles had a certain appeal about them and one remains today.
Motorcars were scarce in Epworth in those far off days, but it wasn’t to long after that this junction was to see Traffic lights erected.
Pictured below on25 February 2011, the Chapel is used as a worthwhile youth centre, while the manse is a private dwelling with abundance of security cameras, a reflection of life now everywhere in the
21st century.

Dented Car?
Take the dent out of your car without
denting your pocket
DENT REWIND LTD specialises in paintless dent removal (PDR) which is the unique art of removing dents
from your car using a series of rods and bars to massage the dent out from behind the panel.
With no need for filler or expensive paintwork, it makes this technique a very economical way of getting
rid of those car park and trolley dents. Providing the paint is not damaged, most dents are removable.
Dent Rewind is owned and run by Paul Langridge who along with his highly trained dent technicians take
great pride in their friendly, high quality service.
Paul spent 10 years working in a bodyshop before training in Paintless Dent Removal in 2000. Following this
Paul ran his own business serving local garages and dealerships in the South East before opening Dent Rewind in
March 2007. As from January 2011 we are now offering our services to the Doncaster area on a mobile basis.
Removal of dints, dings, minor creases and hailstone damage can take from as little as half an hour
depending on the size of the dent, and so losing your car for two or three days for work to be carried is a thing of
the past. PDR requires no chemicals or paint so is environmentally friendly too.
Whether you‘re selling your car and want the best price, returning a lease car and want to avoid costly
charges or just want to see your car back to its original condition, without the miss-match of colour from a respray,
then Dent Rewind should be your first port of call.
With prices starting from as little as £40 + VAT per panel (subject to scale of damage) you can often avoid
claims on your insurance so call for a free estimate.

NEWS FOR THE WORLD
The headlines recently have been full of what has happened to
the newspaper the News of the World. II think it was either Mark Twain or
Charles Dickens who said he read the bible to see what God what doing,
and the newspaper to see what the world was doing. Well that particular
newspaper will be read no more.
Different people go to different parts of the newspaper first-some the back page
for the sports, some the letter column wherever that may be, some the births marriages
and deaths, and some the puzzle -page to do their mental aerobics. Some also go to the
classified section for car sales or house sales. It has been suggested that certain readers
have only gone to the News of the World for gossip.
Though the Bible and the newspaper may seem different they are both about
people. They actually share many things. They are for example both about births marriages
and re-marriages and death. They both include gossip and intrigue, and at times they can
both include puzzles and mysteries.
Perhaps the two are not so different. The paper was News OF the World, the
bible continues to be News FOR the World.

EUROFEST 2011 organised by Mrs Sue Scott and the MFL Department at South Axholme School
Students in Year 8 have been busily preparing for the Eurofest Final for weeks. Eurofest is a joint Modern Foreign
Languages and Enterprise project, where students design a product and produce advertising and promotional
material to pitch at the simulated trade fair in French. A panel including members of staff, students from John Leggott
College and business people from the local community judged the groups on their language skills as well as the design
of their product and the quality of their stand. 10 groups competed to win in 4 different catergories: Best use of
French, Best trade stand, Best effort and an overall winning group who won the Eurofest cup, medal and gift
vouchers. The winning team was called Minuit Gaterie Jellybaby
Minuit Gaterie Jellybaby
Ruth Gatecliff
Rebecca Gofton
Josh Myhill
Their main product was a giant jellybaby, which they raffled off at the end. They were certainly very enterprising,
giving away goody bags to all the judges full of products they had made.
Mrs Scott said ―Their effort was outstanding and totally surpassed my expectations, as did many of the other
finalists‖. Mr Paul Barratt, chairman of the Goveners at SAX commended Rebecca on her excellent use of French.
Many pupils said they had learned a lot from the experience and that their French had greatly improved.

Cornering
Dear readers,
Superb cornering is a skill to master. Here‘s how to do it.
Many aspects of Advanced Driving are exhilarating, but smooth, progressive, and safe cornering is arguably
the most enjoyable. Advanced Drivers handle corners in a prepared and precise way, with superb obser-
vation, great planning, a good line through the bend and a progressive exit. These are crucial elements that
raise driving standards above those of the everyday motorist. Even the innocuous corner requires real
concentration.
What is the limit point of vision?
The limit point is the furthest point ahead at which you have a clear view of the road surface. On a clear,
level road this is the point at which the right and left-hand sides of the road appear to meet. Advanced
Drivers always drive at a speed that allows them to stop (on their own side of the road) within the dis-
tance they can see is clear- that is the distance between them and the limit point
This determines how fast you can drive. The further away the limit point is the faster you can go, as you
have more room to stop in - and vice versa. This applies to junctions as well as bends.
Match your velocity to the speed the ―limit point‖ moves away from you, providing you can stop in the
distance that you can see is clear.
If you watch the limit point as you approach a bend or a junction, you‘ll notice that it may move. If it
moves towards you, slow down, as the bend or turn is tightening.
If it moves away from you, it means the road is opening up. This ‗Limit point technique‘ involves matching
your speed, to the speed the limit point moves, accelerating or slowing your vehicle accordingly.
Using this method ensures the right choice of speed and the correct gear selection. This will enable you
to maintain your vehicle‘s balance throughout any turn or curve.
The vehicle will be on the correct side of the road in a balanced and controllable state, and you will be
able to stop in the distance you can see to be clear.
If you are interested in the courses that we offer, you‘ll be able to find this information on the Institute of
Advanced Motorists website at www.iam.org.uk or Tel: 01302 886 276

Epworth Primary School News letter
Cooking in School
We have now raised the £3500 needed for our new cooking area.
This will be used each day by the Breakfast Club and by the children in
Food Technology lessons. I am sure the children will enjoy cooking in
the area from next term.
I hope lots of parents and children will join us to raise lots of money
for our new cooking area.
Canopies in School
This term we have had two canopies built. These replace the canopies damaged in the exceptional
weather we had last winter. One canopy in the Foundation Stage Outdoor area will provide useful storage
for outside play and improve our provision in this area. The Gazebo outside classes 4 and 5 will have lots
of uses. It is for the children to have some shade on sunny days, a place for teachers to take children to
read stories to and for parents to shelter in bad weather while waiting for the children.
Both canopies are already well used and improve further the school grounds.
Summer Fair
Last month we held another very successful Summer Fair raising almost £1900 towards our new cooking
area. The Fair was held after school on the school field. We had lots of stalls including Strawberries and
Cream, Welly wanging , Games organised by the older children, Cakes, Face Painting, Bouncy slide, burger
bar and many more. The children also entertained parents by performing a Wake Up Shake Up exercise
routine.
I am very grateful for the parents and friends in F.O.E.‘s for organising our biggest event of the year and to
parents and staff for manning all the stalls.
With best wishes for a happy holiday.
