Reckless Love Jesus answered, “The first is, ‘Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, ‘You shall love
your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” Mark 12:29-31 NRSV
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done for love? I took a trip to Saskatchewan.
This girl I was dating in college (Yes, it’s Aimee) was invited to a wedding in Canada. I believe my invitation was along the lines of “you can come, too, if you want.” The groom was the former roommate of some friends of Aimee’s that were becoming friends of mine. As these friends had offered me the opening in their suite when the groom moved out, I accepted the offer of a place in the caravan of vehicles and the chance for a college road trip.
We drove to Southey, Saskatchewan, in what I have just looked up was a seven and a half hour trip. We both had a great time with friends, and the trip is a life-long memory. I’m not sure that I even brought a gift, but the reception and time with his family was a lot of fun. The relationships I made on that trip are still going strong.
In our Lenten study this year, Reckless Love, the author, Rev. Tom Berlin, will ask us questions about how willing we are to love like God, to love recklessly. We are called to do our best to share the love of God with our neighbor, but what if that love leads us to crazy things, to crazy ministries, to radically draw the circle of God’s love wider?
We like to share love with those we know. It’s easy to say yes to a crazy road trip when friends encourage us and offer to lead the way. It’s easy to show radical love to those we already know, to those who have been part of our community for a long time.
That’s not the challenge of this passage of scripture, however. Not only are we to love God so completely that it will encompass our heart, our soul, our mind, and our strength, we are to share that same love with our neighbor.

The next funeral will be served by the August
serving group.
Your serving group provides fellowship for Sunday mornings and the comforting presence that all need following a
funeral service. These are important ministries that we provide for one another within the community. It is a way to reach out to those who have not found that gift of the Holy Spirit as being real in their own lives.
If the month is not a fit for you, please contact VirLyn Hoff, Carol Peterson, or leave a note in the office with Anita.

Memorials For the Glory of God—We continue to shape our ministries at Epworth around a vision that calls us into relationship with our community and within our congregation. There are four areas of focus within that vision: Spiritual Growth, Signature Ministries, Radical Hospitality, and Collaborative Leadership.
Collaborative Leadership
Our new Servant Leadership Team has begun meeting, and their work is beginning to show fruit. They are studying the book Canoeing the Mountains; Christian Leadership in Uncharted Territory by Tod Bolsinger. Copies of that book are available from the office for $16. It uses the difficulties faced by the Lewis & Clark Expedition to illustrate the uncharted territory faced by the Church in the 21st Century. We invite you to read along with us and to pray for these leaders.
Signature Ministries We Love Washington School For the February meals for teachers during Parent/Teachers Conferences, the PTA of Washington School
purchases pizza and Subway sandwiches for the teachers and staff. Epworth is collecting donations to support these professionals and help care for their needs. Share your gift on a Sunday or with the Church Office.
Spiritual Growth
We have two studies available during the Lenten Season.
Our main study for the season of Lent will be based on the book Reckless Love by Rev. Tom Berlin. This study will form the basis for our Sunday and Wednesday worship. We will also have opportunity to see the videos shared by our Dakotas Conference leadership, including Bishop Ough.
The Monday Night Study will begin on March 2, and the book will be available from the Church Office shortly.
The Grace of Les Miserables by Rev. Matt Rawle will be the study of our Wednesday Theology Lunch. This study uses the themes of the novel, musical, and movie versions of this classic of French literature to dig into the ideas surrounding Social Justice and the Gospel. You are welcome to join us for lunch at the VCSU Memorial Union on any Wednesday, and the study of Les Miserables will begin on Feb. 26.
Radical Hospitality
Epworth’s Holy Grounds will be celebrating its second
anniversary in February. This ministry, which shares the mission of “Building relationships, one cup at a time” is still growing in impact and in revenue. We invite you to buy and wear a new t-shirt or grab a new travel mug to support this work.
2020 Lenten Suppers—
Its not too early to think about Wednesday evening Lenten Suppers! If you have a ministry you would like to
raise funds for by providing one of our Lenten Suppers, please call the office for dates and availability. Suppers are served at 5:30 pm for a free will donation.

Then it’s on to planning & organizing for our VBS to be held on May 26-29. We are gearing up for a whole lot of fun & excitement!

Rachel “Kay” Sauer—Jan. 17, 1938—Jan. 8, 2020 Sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Kay Sauer. Kay was a very active member of Epworth for many years and served in many roles of leadership. Please keep daughter Connie and son Randy and all of her family and friends in your prayers. Kay’s life was celebrated on Jan. 16, 2020.
Frances Snyder—Oct. 10, 1928—Jan.19, 2020 Sincere sympathy to Barb & Jon Owen and family for the loss of Barb’s mother Frances. Frances’s Celebration of Life service was held Jan. 23 at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dayne presiding.
Kathleen “Katie” Wright—May 20, 1930—Jan. 21, 2020 Sincere sympathy to the family and friends of Katie Wright. Kay was a very active member of Epworth. Ministry was very important to her and she participated in many roles within the church, conference, and community. Katie always had a kind word and a smile for everyone. Her Celebration of Life service was on Sat., Jan. 25 at Epworth UMC.
Annetta Hansen—Oct. 6, 1925—Jan. 24, 2020 Sincere sympathy to Perry Roorda and family on the death of Perry’s sister Annetta. Annetta was Perry’s oldest sister and the oldest of the six siblings. She enjoyed cooking large meals for family gatherings and it is told that “her gravy was never lumpy and her pie crust was always flaky!” Annetta’s life was celebrated on Jan. 31.
Harold Fick—March 31, 1928—Jan. 25, 2020 Sincere sympathy to Dennis & Liz Fick and family on the death of Dennis’ father Harold. Harold had a full and adventurous life which included military service and trucking cross country. Harold’s love of horses led to being a founding member of the Fort Seward Wagon Train and to participating in the Winter Show Horse Pull. Harold’s life was celebrated with a time of sharing and prayers on Jan. 30.

Much has been said, lately, about the “self-sorting” that Americans are living into politically and culturally. It can be much more comfortable to gather with those who share similar political views, or similar education levels, or similar work.
Reckless love calls us to break down those boundaries. If we are new to the community, it invites us into relationship with those who have been here for generations. If our friendship circle all has the same type of job, it invites us to create relationship with those with a different type of work. If our relationships just reinforce what we already know, it is harder to learn new things, to be shaped by others, to reach out in community to a hurting world.
If we would try to emulate Christ in this season of Lent, we need to be willing to share with those who seem to be on the outside. The reckless love of God calls us to question our own limits, and to reach out to transform lives, and to transform the world.
In Christ,
Join us on Ash Wednesday, February 26. We will both create and share the ashes that mark the beginning of the season of Lent. There will be a supper served at 5:30, with worship in the Sanctuary to follow at 6:30. Please join us for this time of prayer and self-dedication.

Hello Everyone,
We have met a few times since the beginning of the new
year. We have about a dozen or so youth that come each
week to youth group. I think that it is awesome! We
started doing a LinC series, which is weekly youth-based
curriculum about today’s issues. It is fun and interesting
to hear what they have to say on the topics we talk
about.
We had a small group of youth go to Winter Connection
at the end of January in Bismarck. We went and hung out
with youth from around North Dakota and had fun while
doing some service projects for the area. The youth that
went had a great time and will be able to tell you about
the trip if you ask them. I am honored to have a youth
group that likes going to events like this and show active
participation in conference level activities.
God’s Grace,
Rydel Samuelson

Dear Friends in Mission,
Thank you!
The dear people you just helped with your gift to UMCOR may never have the opportunity to meet you, but if they did, I am certain their response would be Thank you!
And through your financial support you are serving within a vital network of interactive relationships in the U.S. and in more than 60 countries in which UMCOR and partnering agencies engage in direct ministry to persons in need.
May we continue to reveal the love of God for men, women, and children of all ethnic, racial, cultural, and national backgrounds and to demonstrate the healing power of the gospel with those who suffer.
Grace and Peace,
Thomas G. Kemper, General Secretary
Roland Fernandes, COO and General Treasurer

Let Your Light Shine! Thank you to all who helped with the worship service for our
United Methodist Women Sunday held January 26. Thank you to Pastor Dayne for his support of the ministry of the United Methodist Women.
Our 2020 program theme is Let Your Light Shine. In the month of February, United Methodist Women observe the Call to Prayer and Self Denial offering. First, we meet God in meditation and prayer. Then we give of our resources so that God’s vision of abundant life can be realized. In 2018 nearly $600,000 was raised through this offering. 100% of these funds go directly toward ministry for women, children and youth.
This year’s offering will go toward the work of national mission institutions, international partners and regional missionaries. Projects will include child development and afterschool programs; GED and ESL programs; job readiness and life skill training; scholarships and microenterprise projects for economic development. This offering is taken at circle meetings or can be given to Treasurer Dorothy Schroeder or placed in the UMW mailbox in the church office workroom.
Paul writes to the church in Corinth with encouragement to be generous to improve the lives of those without enough. Paul reassures them that in giving, they will not be destitute themselves. We can be reassured ourselves that doing the will of God will enrich our own lives.
The January / February issue of the Response magazine has several stories about the impact of United Methodism. As we “let our light shine” through our giving, sacrifice, and advocacy, we change the world. But, also, we are changed ourselves as we grow in love of God and neighbor.
Circles meet Thursday, Feb. 20. Sunny Circle meets at 10 am at church. Circle of Faith is considering meeting afternoons during winter. Watch for an invite.
God’s economics – “The one who had much did not have too much, and the one who had little did not have too little.” ( 2 Corinthians 8: 15 )

“Open Table” Served on the last Tuesday of every month, this ministry is something to look forward to for many in our community. Planning meetings are held on a Sunday after
worship and dates are on the calendar and in the bulletin. All are welcome to attend and help!
Donations of food items, cookies, funds, and helping hands are welcome.
Our January Open Table meal was held on Jan. 28. Pastor Dayne, with the help of Brenda & Paul Lint, and Rydel Samuelson, served a meal of chicken pot pie, 7 layer salad (thanks to Michelle and Becky), and cake. Thirty-five people joined this night of food and fellowship.
Our next Open Table meal will be on Tuesday, Feb. 25th. We will be serving breakfast for dinner—pancakes & sausage. —The Open Table Team
Dear Friends at Epworth UMC Women’s Group,
“I just wanted to take a moment to tell you how grateful I am for your December donation. Cold weather and the Christmas
season both opened several doors of opportunity to minister to people who needed warm clothing, fellowship and free gifts. Your December donation of $250.00 contributed significantly to the success of our efforts in December. For example, we had a successful Christmas event and Toy Mall with each child receiving two free gifts instead of one this year. Also, I learned after the event that a mother with five children was not able to attend. I invited her to come to the thrift store to pick up free gifts for her children. I also made arrangements to have boxes of food and household supplies from the food pantry delivered to the store so she would take home plenty of free gifts and food for the Christmas season. It’s important you know just how much your financial donations make it possible for us to give people what they need when they need it. Thank you for equipping us to further our mission to help folks feel at home in Watford City!” God bless you richly,
Dwayne W. Keener, Director Bakken Oil Rush Ministry
