2014 November ~ Letter from our Director of Music Moving to Rehoboth Beach has always been a dream of mine. I thought it would be in about 25 years— after Retirement. I never dreamed I would be living here and working here in such an amazing Faith Community. I applied for this position in August of 2013 when I first saw it posted on Choral.net. I connected with Chris Berg, through mutual friends when I was down here on a family trip in October. I toured the church, met Kenny Mahan and Glen Pruitt and absolutely fell in love with the church. Chris kept me informed on the progress of the search committee and my interest remained. I finally heard from Chris in mid July inviting me to come interview on August 15, exactly a year from when the position was posted. I was invited back to audition with the Chancel Choir and Bell Choir on September 3 and 4. Steve Elkins phoned me on the evening of September 9 offering me the position. I immediately accepted and then fell into panic mode. I had a house to sell/rent, I had to find a place to live here AND I was going to Italy to celebrate my partner’s 50 th birthday for 10 days. As is always the case, God made it all happen. I had a fabulous trip to Italy, was able to rent my house to a reliable friend and I found a place here in Five Villages in Lewes. Church music has always been a part of my life. I joined the Cherub Choir at my home church, St. David’s U.C.C. in Hanover, PA and had my first solo at age 8. “The Lowly Little Jesus” out of a Children’s Christmas Cantata we were doing. In Hanover each Sunday a different church’s service is broadcast on the local radio station on Sunday evening. The day of my solo was our day!!!!! Imagine the excitement of an 8 year old hearing his voice on the radio. I know then this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I graduated from Westminster High School in Carroll County, MD in 1989 and immediately matriculated to Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ where I graduated in 1993. I always joke that my parents couldn’t afford another sweatshirt so I had to go to Westminster. Fortunately there was a U.C.C. Church immediately across the street from campus. I went the first Sunday and during the announcements they invited everyone to join in fellowship to honor Joanne who was retiring as Organist and Choir Director that morning and that the search was on for a new Director. Guess who started the following Sunday? I remained in that position until my graduation. I began as Organist and Choir Director at Messiah United Methodist Church in Lafayette Hill, PA which coincidentally was the home church of my mentor, Scott Fredericks, who was my musical and inspiration to attend Westminster Choir College. I was “recruited” by another local UMC, Asbury United Methodist Church in 1999 where I built a huge Community Outreach Choir of 75 to 100 voices performing FREE concerts twice a year for an underprivileged community. Our concerts were standing room only. In 2011 I accepted the position of Director of Music and Organist at Arch Street UMC in Philadelphia, just two doors up from City Hall. I built a large program and they are still in the process of filling my replacement. The position I applied for originally is not the position they are now advertising. They realized how important music is for ALL. And ALL means ALL. Among other things I formed a Homeless Choir made up of men and women who were struggling with finding permanent housing. This was a very transient group but we provided music during the worship service for them every Sunday evening. I’m looking forward to all the possibilities that lie ahead for me, Epworth and the Music Ministry. We have already hit the ground running and I’m beyond thrilled to be part of this staff and Community of Faith. -Andrew Monath In This Issue Letter from our Director of Music Worship Page Youth Page Pathway Pages Special Announcements Epworth Classifieds Birthdays & Anniversaries Epworth: a United Methodist Church Newsletter E-NEWS ~ November 2014 Letter from our Director of Music

We are beginning to plan a large event to Celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. This event will include a live nativity, music from Crimson Letter (our youth group band), a rummage sale and refreshments.

While this is a youth led event we need church wide support and want to make it a community event for all. There are many ways you can help. We need people to help plan and set up the stages of the nativity as well as people with animals they would be willing to donate to the nativity scenes. We need people to make cookies and other Christmas refreshments as well as helping running the tents of hot chocolate and hot apple cider. We also need people to donate Christmas decorations, ordainments, and other items that can be sold as part of the rummage sale. Christmas will be here before we know it so let’s get a jump on this planning so we can not only make it a great event for this church but also the entire Community.

If you are willing to volunteer in any capacity please contact Rev. Kody at [email protected].

Faith Development

THE FIRST CHRISTMAS: WHAT THE GOSPELS

REALLY TEACH ABOUT JESUS’ BIRTH

by MARCUS BORG and JOHN

DOMINIC CROSSAN

Save the dates: November 30, December 7, 14 and 21

Christmas is one of the two most sacred seasons of the Christian year b u t i t h a s s o m et i m e s b e en sentimentalized, romanticized, and therefore domesticated into only a holiday. Christmas is certainly a season for comfort and joy but it can also be a time to be challenged into growing spiritually. Christmas can be more than what we have made it. In the preface of this book the authors write:

“The stories of the first Christmas are both personal and political. They speak of personal and political transformation. Set in their first-century context, they are comprehensive and passionate visions of another way of seeing life and of living our lives.

“They challenge the common life, the status quo, of most times and places. Even as they are tidings of comfort and joy, they are edgy and challenging. They confront “normalcy,” what we call “the normalcy of civilization”—the way most societies, most human cultures, have been and are organized. “These stories are about light in our darkness, the fulfillment of our deepest yearnings, and the birth of Christ within us. They are about us— our hopes and fears. And they are about a different kind of world. God’s dream for us is not simply peace of mind, but peace on earth.”

We will explore together this engaging book to get a glimpse of the possibility of experiencing Christmas as more deeply transforming. You do not have to read the book to enjoy this study but it can add immensely to your experience. Several copies will be available for loan.

This Advent class will meet: From: 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm In: Scott’s Chapel (except December 7—in the Music Room) Led by: The Rev. J. Thomas Ledbetter, Pastoral Psychotherapist, Brandywine Pastoral Institute, Lewes, DE Sign-up sheets are in the Narthex on the Faith Development table .

Living the Question Class:

What’s it all about? Who is Jesus and what is his message? How about Creation, Nativity and the Passion—what do they mean? What do we as Christians have to say or do with our messed up world of 2014? What is relevant about Church? Do you ever have these questions or others? If so, you might

have much to offer and to participate in this class.

The class will meet Monday nights from 7:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.—no later than 9:00 p.m.—in the Branford Lounge. We will begin on November 10 and continue through December 1. We then will take a break for the December festivities and resume January 5 through the 26. There will be materials to read and think about preceding every class. so on or after November 1 you can pick up a copy of the readings in the church office. The class format is video and discussion led. Theologians and biblical scholars such as Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, Tex Sample, John Shelby Spong and Helen Prejean contribute to the readings. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Narthex on the Faith Development table.. Questions about the class, call Nettie at 302-227-2595.

Hospitality:

How do we think of Sunday morning Fellowship time? For some it is a time to catch up with our Epworth family, for some to get some church business done and for others perhaps just refreshment. Looking around on a Sunday morning, all seem to enjoy this time. How do we think of helping with Sunday morning Fellowship? Have you ever thought of Sunday morning Fellowship as a mission??? Lots of folks think of the ISOP meals, the Sunday Soup Meal and food service at the cold weather shelter as mission. But the apostle Paul in his writings to the early church encourages us to care for one another, i.e., mission. Why help with Fellowship? Those of us who help with Fellowship feel like this is a mission. We meet and get to know people. We have fun too. This summer there have Sundays when there has only been one person to prepare and clean up Fellowship. That is not fun. I would like to have new people involved so that maybe a person would only have to give 1-1/2 hours a month. The shifts are 7:30 to 9:00 or 10:30 – 12 noon. I am always happy to orient people to the kitchen and what is involved with Fellowship. Won’t you please consider helping? For more information call Linda Bruce -- 226-1108

Worship Pathway “Everyone Has a Story to Tell...What's Yours?"

Rev. Vicky is asking you to think about your own personal story of what Jesus Christ has done in your life and how your life has changed especially as it relates to your time here at Epworth. Here is what we're looking for: Brevity: your story should be brief,

able to be read in two (2) minutes or less.

Presentation: a willingness to present it live or record it for showing at one of our services. (If you want to share your story but you don't want to present it yourself, we can provide a proxy presenter for you.)

How do you share your story? First, write down your testimony. Read it aloud to check your time (less than two minutes). Second, send it to John Hammett, our Story Coordinator. H i s e m a i l a d d r e s s i s

[email protected]. Or drop your story off in the Church Office in an envelope with his name on it. Why are we doing this? It's all about connections. Sharing our stories will connect us with others and them with us. We discover the many ways that God is working in the lives of our Church body. Our stories will inspire many others in their walk with the Lord. Our faith will grow stronger; our improved connections will become bonds tying us together in the Lord. Epworth will grow stronger and attract more people. "Everyone has a story to tell." We can hardly wait to hear your story. If you have questions, contact John by email or call him at 302-227-1078.

Social Justice:

Fair trade coffee, tea, chocolate, and olive oil items are sold by the Social Justice Pathway the first Sunday of every month in Fellowship Hall. Look for the display table from 8:30 am to 11:30 a.m. It’s November already! Chilly mornings cause some of us to return to a routine of coffee after switching to other beverage alternatives in warmer weather and some of us increase coffee intake at this time of year. This might be a good time to explore some new flavor experiences. In order to prepare green coffee beans for customer consumption, the beans are roasted, but there is more than one way to roast a coffee bean! Our fair trade product supplier, Equal Exchange Coop, offers four different roasts with further flavor variety added by sourcing

beans from different coffee-growing regions of the world. Equal Exchange roasts include: Medium: The sweetest, brightest

and most accurate flavor profile. It reveals the bean’s true characteristics.

Full City: The sugars caramelize a little longer, offering new depth to the flavors without covering up acidity. Taming the tart, while highlighting the sweet.

Vienna: Dense caramelized sugars and smokiness for more bittersweet flavors. Think cooked fruit or maple and mesquite or dark chocolate.

French: The beans offer something more: heavy mouthfeel, smoky flavors and a sweet, refreshing aftertaste.

Generally, as the roasting time increases (from medium to French) depth of flavor increases. Also the flavors associated with the country or region of origin decrease – that is why a medium roast is said to reveal the bean’s true characteristics. There are other roasts in the coffee universe (American, City, etc.); these are the roasts available from Equal Exchange Coop and, combined with a number of source countries, provide a range of coffees to suit almost every taste.

Holiday Gift Giving The Social Justice Pathway will prepare some gift baskets for sale at our regular December 7th sale in Fellowship Hall and also at December’s Cookie Walk. In 2014, we are offering parishioners the opportunity to order gift baskets with a selection of fair trade products made to your order and invite you to place an order at our Fellowship Hall sales on November 2. We also invite customers to peruse the Equal Exchange Coop catalog to order gift items in case lots that will be available to pick up on December 7 or at the Cookie Walk in December. Don’t let the “case lot” requirement scare you off. For example, case lots of regular coffees, teas, and cocoa consist of only 6 bags, boxes or cans. Cases of chocolate bars, though, do include 12, 3.5 ounce bars. Special case lot orders for the holidays will allow customers to explore Equal Exchange products not regularly available through the Social Justice Pathway, such as almonds, cashews, dried fruits, rice cakes, as well as additional coffee roasts and tea blends. And, why use the Christmas holidays as an excuse to order case lots of items you want? You can place a case lot order from the Equal Exchange catalog any time during the year. Just visit the Social Justice Pathway sales table on the first Sunday of every month in Fellowship Hall.

As Tom puts it, “Some of us “oldsters” are going to start meeting to talk about that—not as a study group, but as a support group. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, November 11, beginning at 10:30 a.m.; we’ll meet for an hour. We’ll share our experiences, our strengths and our hopes—and perhaps some less positive things as well. “Many of us learned Robert Browning’s lines in school: “Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be.” Many whose school days can’t be seen even in the rear view mirrors of our minds would tend to agree with the poet. Old age has its plus side, not the least of these pluses being that we are still here. In our honest moments, though, “best” does not seem an ap-propriate tag to hang on all of our days. Old age has its down side: health challenges, losses of energy, mobility, and inde-pendence; deaths of friends and the facing of our own.” Want to explore all these aspects of aging with Tom and other “oldsters”? You’re welcome to join!

A sign-up sheet is in the Narthex.

The Best is Yet to Be Really?! The Rev. Tom Starnes invites you to join a

new group which will explore that question.

Epworth’s First Annual Reconciling Sunday To Take Place November 9 We started a new Epworth tradition Sunday, November 9, 2014, when each morning service will officially recognize and celebrate our status as a Reconciling congregation. To be known as Reconciling Sunday at Epworth, each future second Sunday of November will host similar services and celebrations. Supported and sponsored by Epworth’s FIRE (Faithfully Inviting and Reconciling Everyone) group, the services will feature guest preacher, David Garrett. David serves as chairman of the FIRE group, previously known as the Reconciling task force. Epworth became a Reconciling Church in April 2006 through a vote at the Church Conference to affiliate with The Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) of the United Methodist Church. This affiliation means that Epworth is intentional about

mobilizing United Methodists of all sexual orientations and gender identities to transform our Church and world into the full expression of Christ’s inclusive love. In addition to David’s special messages during the services, there will be a FIRE table in the Fellowship Hall, providing those interested with the opportunity to learn more about Reconciling Ministries. The FIRE group meets monthly to plan events for Epworth and for the community at large. Over the past few months, the group sponsored the visit of Rev. Frank Schaefer in June and a September potluck dinner, where they featured the video, “For the Bible Tells Us So.” The group is planning a number of special events during 2015. David notes, “It is our hope that all visitors and members of Epworth find our church an open and inviting place to worship.

Cookies Needed For Kairos Prisoners The fifth Kairos weekend will begin on Thursday October 30 and go to Sunday November 2. We need above all else your prayers that God's will be done and the message of agape love and forgiveness be received. We also need cookies. We cannot take home- made cookies in but we can take store bought and wrapped in packages and we need several thousand dozen cookies. Please consider buying several bags and bring them to Epworth for collection. In addition it cost us about $150 for each participant for the weekend. If you are able to make a tax deductible contribution to cover all or part of this cost please make a check payable to Kairos of DE and bring it to the church office or call Bill Young at 302-945-3445 or Sterling Green at 302-245-1828. If you are able to sponsor more than one participant that would be greatly appreciated.

Special Announcements ~ November 2014

Mark your calendars: Falling this year on December 2, UMC’s 2014 #GivingTuesday provides us with an opportunity to both support worldwide missions AND further benefit those missions through the receipt of matching funds! The United Methodist Board of Global Ministries has committed to matching, dollar-for-dollar, the first $1million donated online to Advance projects on that date. Example mission projects: The selection is vast! You can support

individual missionaries, such as Stephen Copley, who works in Arkansas with Justice for Our Neighbors. Or an international project, such as Wings of Caring—a Democratic Republic of Congo transportation service seeking to purchase a larger plane. Or support Red Bird Mission—opportunities span spiritual, educational, housing, health and food outreach in remote Appalachia. UMC #GivingTuesday is an international movement which builds on the US holiday shopping traditions of Black Friday and Cyber Monday (but is far more gratifying). It focuses on enabling Methodists worldwide to start off the holiday season with a gift to any of the 850+ United Methodist projects listed in The Advance. All projects have been researched and approved by the UM Board of Global Ministries, and 100% of all gifts made through The Advance go directly to the donor’s designated project. In 2013, a record $6.5 million was raised online through The Advance on #GivingTuesday. Want to know more? Ctrl/click here: Matching Funds!

Want to choose a project and part ic ipate in the UMC’s #GivingTuesday? Ctrl/click here: Remember: You may donate at the site at any time, but only the first $1 million in donations made on #GivingTuesday qualify for matching funds. If you’re facing Black Friday and Cyber Monday with more dread than eager anticipation, there’s another option available! North Katanga Wings of the Morning

Travel Opportunity

Next year, at this time (10/30—11/9), you could be exploring the wonders of Italy with friends and members of Epworth. Rev. Bob Paulen is leading the tour party that will discover the wonders of this intriguing land from the ruins to the Renaissance to contemporary life. Feature sites include Venice, Florence, the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and Rome. For details, contact Bob by email ([email protected]) or phone (226-2269).

days a month.

“The Bus” on Sunday Morning using

Epworth’s newly donated Shuttle Bus! Our goal

is to pick up members and friends from local

assisted living facilities. If you have a CDL

license you may be able to drive. We also need

CO-PILOTS who don’t drive but help folks

getting on and off of the bus safely. If Service is

at or near the top of your Spiritual Gifts list, this

could be the opportunity for you.

RUNNERS needed... What’s a “runner”, you ask? A runner is a much needed person to help the Office Staff and Communications Team distribute posters around town promoting Epworth happenings. It is a one of a kind volunteer opportunity that doesn’t have any set hours. We call, if you are available, you run. Call Kenny on ext 101.

YOUTH LEADERS! Do you ever wonder why our Youth Group is

having so much fun? Why not volunteer and

join the fun. Call Rev Kody to discuss the

possibilities at 302.227.7743 x105.

Help Wanted: The wonderful gardens surrounding the church need people to adopt them. In adopting a garden you will agree to weed it regularly and help keep it in good growing order. This will include helping with the mulching crew when we need to spread mulch, pruning as needed and care of the ground cover and bulbs. If this sounds like a job for you, please contact Kenny Mahan at [email protected] or 302.227.7743 ext 101.

There are still a

few openings in the

Preschool availa-

ble. Call Ms. Betsy

at 302.227.7120.
