About this manual This manual provides a description of all databases, tables and fields provided in EPV for z/OS Plus Version 11. Changes Technical changes or additions to the text are indicated by a vertical line to the left of the change.

EPV Technologies

1. Introduction Enterprise Performance Vision (EPV) for z/OS Plus (EPV for z/OS) is a product designed to provide performance analysts, capacity and systems managers with a complete vision of their companies systems and workloads. EPV for z/OS allows quick identification of anomalies, performance problems and abnormal resource consumptions; it is also an efficient tool for capacity planning. The product uses auto discovery techniques that are completely transparent to the user, aggregates and correlates the useful metrics, producing valuable information ready to use. EPV for z/OS architecture is based on three tiers: Data load interface; Correlation and aggregation engine; HTML pages production engine.

The data load interface is designed to optimize performance and resource consumption during the loading phase, avoiding duplication or data loss. The correlation and aggregation engine populates a set of databases (DBs), including the metrics used for the reporting phase, aggregated by hour, day and month. The HTML production engine creates a set of correlated static pages which allow rapid identification of anomalies, performance problems and abnormal resource consumption. These EPV for z/OS reports will usually provide all the information needed for Performance Analysis and Capacity Planning activities, however it is sometimes useful to get information directly from the EPV for z/OS DBs. The goal of this document is to provide clear and exhaustive documentation of the DBs so that customers can fully exploit the power of EPV for z/OS.

2. EPV for z/OS input EPV for z/OS uses the following SMF records:

Software; TAR records, produced by the IMFLEDIT3

the utility (see Attachment A) provided by the Mainview for IMS product, developed by BMC Software, that correlates the 2 above sources.

EPV supports all these sources, but, if they are available, we suggest using FA or TAR, because they provide more accurate and complete information.4

EPV uses disk volume space statistics produced using the IBM utility IDCAMS with the DCOLLECT input option. These measurements must be gathered daily for all the systems.5

EPV also supports tape volume space statistics produced using the SWSADMIN STK utility with the QU MVCP NAME(ALL) option. These measurements must be gathered daily for all the systems.6

3. Databases Starting from the input data described in the previous chapter, EPV for z/OS, by using auto discovery techniques completely transparent to the user, aggregates and correlates the most useful metrics, producing valuable and ready to use information. All this information is stored in a set of DBs. A short description of each DB and its content is provided in this chapter. MCONF collects information about the z/OS hardware and software configuration. The retention period of all the tables in this DB is determined by the DETAIL parameter. The default value is 60 days. For the configuration changes tables (SHRCHA and SYSCHA) the retention period is controlled by the CCDAYS parameter. The default value is 720 days. The IPLS table doesn’t have any retention parameter. MWKLA collects information about the z/OS workloads aggregated at the hour. The retention period of all the tables in this DB is determined by the DETAIL parameter. The default value is 60 days. MWRMF collects information about the z/OS workloads aggregated at the RMF interval. The retention period of all the tables in this DB is determined by the DETAIL parameter. The default value is 60 days. MRESA collects information about the z/OS resources aggregated at the hour or at the RMF interval. The retention period of all the tables in this DB is determined by the DETAIL parameter. The default value is 60 days. For the LPARAAP, LPARCPU, LPARIIP and LPARIFL tables, the retention period is controlled by the TREND parameter. The default value is 25 months. MTRND collects trend information about z/OS workloads and resources aggregated at the hour. The retention period of all the tables in this DB is determined by the TREND parameter. The default value is 25 months.
