In this months Information Letter, you can findsome recent findings from the Pharma World,covering a range of topics, which includeasthma pills and inhalers, the relation betweenpain killers and heart attack and promotion inthe pharmaceutical industry.

Dear reader

Exposure to arsenic in drinking water is associated with anincreased risk of mortality from heart disease, especiallyamong smokers. This is the finding of a prospective cohortstudy of 11 746 participants, which measured arsenicexposure from drinking water. The study reveals thatalthough arsenic increases the risk of heart disease onlymoderately compared with other outcomes, cardiovasculardisease is the most common cause of death worldwide,

and even a moderately increased risk means very largenumbers of excess cases.

People with a history of heart attack are at increased risk ofsuffering another attack or dying after even a week of takingcertain types of prescription and over-the-counter painkillers,including diclofenac or ibuprofen, a large new studysuggests.Danish researchers analyzed nationwide records of almost84,000 heart attack survivors and found that those who usedcertain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) forone week faced a 45 percent heightened risk of anotherheart attack.

British scientists.

Researchers tracked 650 patients with

chronic asthma for two years and

found the tablets, leukotriene receptor

antagonists, managed the disease as

well as steroid inhalers.

European pharmaceutical promotion spendincreased by 0.5 per cent in the top fivedeveloped markets of France, Germany, Italy,Spain and the UK and 2.2 per cent in the rest ofEurope in the 12 months up to and includingSeptember 2010. North American promotionexpenditure declined, down by 10.3 per cent,while in the rest of the world expenditureexpanded by 5.6 per cent.In the top five European countries,pharmaceutical companies increased theirpromotional expenditure by 0.5 per cent to$18.5bn in the seven channels that CegedimStrategic Data (CSD) monitors.
