Modern insulation has a name

The histories of the successful Swiss premium brand and that of Sager AG are closely connected up to the pre-sent. It all started in 1949 in Switzerland in the Aargau community of Dürrenäsch. The family-run company is still an independent and important employer in the region today and a decisive driving force in the field of insulation. Sager AG is a reliable contact throughout Switzerland and a select partner in large parts of Europe.

The three product lines of SAGER

Better insulation is more important than ever these days – and our SAGLAN glass wool made of natural quartz sand is the optimum insulation material for construction in Minergie. SAGLAN has outstanding sound and thermal insulation proper-ties. The SAGLAN cutting service is very valuable and covers large insulation thicknesses up to 300 mm. All products can be lined with different coatings.

After all, each system is only as good as the technical insula-tion of its pipelines. Whether for heating systems, warm water pipes, industrial facilities or air conditioning ducts –PIPELANE ensures thermal and sound insulation as well as fire protec-tion. The outstanding material properties ensure reliable and permanent insulation and allow full utilisation of available energy savings potentials. PIPELANE is available with or without aluminium lining.

The brand SAGEX is the epito-me for expanded polystyrene. The building construction and civil engineering industry cannot do without SAGEX. Its application fields are manifold and it helps to solve almost any thermal insula-tion problem. Besides the white SAGEX, we also produce dark grey SAGEX Nero, an advanced development with even better insulation properties an SAGEX Zebra facade insulation slabs.

the ingenious insulation material

There are probably only very few people that do not know the ingenious insulation material SAGEX, because EPS (expanded polystyrene hard foam) is used around the world as insulation, packaging or filler material. EPS is also used in horticulture as soil improver, in landscape gardening as weight reducer for the soil and as a filler material in roads and bridges. In addition, polystyrene is used for injection moulding parts, lightweight concrete, recesses, decora-tions or as an admixture for recycling products.

In the course of earth history, dead plant and animal matter turned into crude oil under enormous pressure. Only 4 % of the crude oil extracted worldwide is required for the production of polymers of all kinds. EPS is among these and was already discovered back in 1931 but not produced from natural organic substanc-

es until 20 years later.

The groundbreaking invention was made by BASF in Ludwigshafen. In 1954, SAGER was the first Swiss company to produce polystyrene insulation slabs by the name of SAGEX.

SAGEX consists of 98% air, which is trapped in 2% pure hydrocarbon –the polystyrene. 1 m3 expanded hard poly-styrene foam contains approx. 3 – 6 billion microscopically small, air-filled cells.

During production, the polystyrene pearls are first foamed up with steam and then bonded with each other in block shapes in a second step also using steam.

The outstanding properties of SAGEX soon became famous. The white, light,

easy to process material with its optimal heat and cold insulation properties can be applied in many different ways and is 100% recyclable.

Today, the building industry cannot do without SAGEX. We produce insulation and facade slabs but also drainage slabs and 2D/3D cuts. We also produce SAGEX Nero, an advanced development of SAGEX with improved thermal insulation properties. We produce SAGEX in Dür-renäsch – a quality product made in Switzerland!

Production of SAGEX from polystyrene

Pre-foamingRaw materials attuned to the products SAGEX, SAGEX Nero or SAGEX Zebra are

placed in the rougher. By activating the bloating agent with steam, the raw material granulate with a grain size of approx. 1 mm is bloated to 10 times its diameter. Moe or less strong bloating decides the bulk density of the end product. The performance of the rougher is attuned to that of the block form.

Block foamingGranulate from the silo, and depending on the quality, addition of approx. 15 % recycling material, this means homogeneous internal SAGER cuts from the downstream cutting station.

The block form is filled up to the top with dried granulate. By adding steam, the granulate is bonded under slight overpressure and thus turns into SAGEX or SAGEX Nero.

Oscillation / cuttingVia the roller belt, the individual blocks with a size of 1000 x 1000 x 500 mm reach

the oscillator. The SAGEX is cut into slabs with hot wires. It can be melted/cut simulta-neously with 50 wires oscillating.

PackagingFoil packaging with the wrapping machine is the last work step before the SAGEX

slabs reach the storage hall via a 100 m long transport belt.

Post processing of facade slabsBy CNC-controlled post-processing (milling) all sides of the SAGEX facade slabs,

it is possible to achieve a very high degree of geometric precision.

Quality assuranceTo meet the high quality standards of the Swiss «Bundesfachabteilung Qualitäts-

sicherung EPS-Hartschaum (BFA QS EPS)», we constantly check the SAGEX quality in our internal laboratory.
