scopeCorrosion is estimated to cost the U.S. electric power industry over 2.3 billion USD/year. A significant portion of this cost is due to corrosion in power plants. A number of factors have renewed interest in both low- and high-temperature corrosion in power generation equipment including traditional coal-fired boilers, gas-fired boilers, natural gas-fired combined-cycle plants, heat recovery steam generators, geothermal plants, environmental control systems, water treatment systems, aging transmission and distribution infrastructure, and new novel power cycles.

The proposed 2½ day conference sponsored by EPRI is intended to promote a robust exchange of information on the latest research between engineers and scientists on an international scale. Invited keynote speakers and submitted papers will be presented and a conference proceedings will be produced.

Conference participants are likely to include utility engineers and personnel, research scientists, universities, corrosion engineers, service providers, and equipment manufacturers involved in materials selection, corrosion phenomenon, corrosion mitigation, and design in power plant systems.

call for papersEPRI invites abstracts to be submitted that address new and emerging technologies or application of existing technologies that have met with success at their owner sites.

Papers are sought in the following areas: Materials selection, corrosion mechanisms, and industry corrosion experience (case studies). Specific areas include:

Low-temperature corrosion• Flue gas desulfurization (FGD) corrosion• FGD wastewater treatment systems materials selection• Zero liquid discharge (ZLD) systems • Water treatment systems• Under insulation and buried pipe corrosion• Effect of fuel and emissions control additives (bromine,

activated carbon, etc.)• Duct-work, casing, and structural corrosion • Fuel/natural gas handling systems

• Duplex and stainless steel experience in geothermal and renewable applications

• Air heater reliability• Coating performance• Repair and mitigation strategies (coatings, overlays, cathodic

protection, etc.)

High-temperature corrosion topics• Steam-side oxidation and exfoliation• Fireside corrosion of waterwall and superheaters/reheaters• Effect of biomass cofiring• Coating and surface modification for improved corrosion behavior• Refractories for gasifiers

Combined mechanisms• Stress corrosion cracking in waterwalls• Dew point or deliquescent salt corrosion impacts• Improper storage and shipment of high-strength alloys• Fouling and pitting in HRSG economizers• Erosion-corrosion in FRP, coatings, rubber, etc.• Combined corrosion and mechanical performance issues

Future technologies and general topics• Novel material solutions and metallic alternatives• Economics of various materials solutions and quantifying the cost

of corrosion• Open and closed supercritical CO2 cycle material compatibility• New equipment: wet electrostatic precipitators (ESPs), CO2
