Biography 2009-2014 With a name born out of a dream had by bandleader Mishkin Fitzgerald, Birdeatsbaby personify the idea of drama, theatrics and the UK alternative music scene. Formed in 2008 when pianist, vocalist and songwriter Mishkin met bass player and guitarist Garry Mitchell at university in Brighton, the two shared a love for contemporary artists Muse, Queen, Tool, Patti Smith and Nick Cave alongside Mishkin’s appreciation and study of Chopin, Debussy, Mozart, and Liszt. This led to a thriving musical partnership that led onto to writing of Birdeatsbaby’s early material. Other band members Keely McDonald (violin) and Philippa Bloomfield (drums) were brought in and the band’s first lineup was established; Mishkin (piano/lead vocals/songwriter), Keely (violin/backing vocals), Garry (bass/guitar/double bass/backing vocals), and Philippa (drums). The band began making music and performing live around Brighton and the surrounding area, attracting reviews from various local press including Brighton’s Source Magazine , who described their music as "an orchestral maelstrom that burrows ever deeper into the brain...scary stuff - but in a good way”. Soon afterwards, the band released their first recording, the three track EP China Doll, that sold well amongst their local followers, and got picked for review by tastemaker publication The Stool Pigeon, plus the indie fanzines; Noisy and Bubblegum Slut, who all noted the band’s unusual image and distinctive musical mix in their reviews of the release. The first EP was an early expression of the band’s theatrical ideas, which has now gone on to evolve into the distinctive, progressive and darkly tinged ‘rock noir’ sound that Birdeatsbaby are known for. In live appearances they have a huge stage presence that captivates the audience and leaves them wanting more – “The crowd seemed to be completely fixated on their performance,” observes Finola Doran of Artrocker at a gig in London. London’s promotion/record company, Moose Factory, stated, “Think what Queen would have done if they had been absinthe drinking pals with Van Gogh at the Moulin Rouge," describing China Doll. Clearly, Birdeatsbaby had managed to form a sound unlike any other. In 2009 they released their first studio album, Here She Comes-A-Tumblin’ , inspired by a period in Mishkin’s life when she was taking sleeping medication that gave her chronic nightmares. With profound and poetic lyrics, the listener is taken through the album in an almost dream-like state from the opening lines of the fairy- tale ‘Seventeen’ to the closing hospital ballad ‘Letter to Charlie.’ The album was picked up by the alternative music press with The 405 describing it as, “the work of a cohesive band, a group of folks clearly on the same page and intent on finishing the story together.” During this album release Philippa the drummer, directed the band’s first video for the single The Trouble. With currently nearly a quarter of a million views on YouTube, this video captures their innovative, artistic talent and gained them the support of their cult-like fanbase from all over the world. It was played at many film festivals around Europe including the Birds Eye View Festival at the ICA London. In 2010 their second EP, Bigger Teeth (produced by Marc R Norris from Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster) was released, which evidently showed the evolution of the band’s sound and led to a string of shows across Europe including support slots with Gabrielle Aplin, Bitter Ruin, Jason Webley and Thomas Truax. Having got a taste of video directing, Philippa then decided to further pursue her career in videography which resulted in the band recruiting their current drummer, Katha Rothe. In 2012 the band released their second album, Feast of Hammers, to critical acclaim. “Playing out like a self-contained gothic opera, Feast of Hammers is burlesque classical in every sense, driven by Sondheim-esque piano melodies, Brecht / Weill song structures, a chamber-rock rhythm section and a recurring psychosexual obsession with water and drowning,” says Ben Graham of tastemaker music blog, The Quietus . The Guardian hailed the album as “the

sound of 2012” and The Independent gave it a 4**** review. Shortly afterwards the band they toured America and Europe extensively. Throughout their career, Birdeatsbaby have accomplished playing countless gigs across Europe, America, and Mexico. Furthermore, they have recorded interview sessions for Tom Robinson of BBC 6Music as well as plays on Amazing Radio (Simon Raymonde, Ruth Barnes, Kathryn Tickel) and BBC Sussex with Simon Price and Phil Jackson. From BBC 6Music, Tom Robinson describes Birdeatsbaby as “howling mad.” and Chris Hawkins pioneered their single The Bullet on his morning show for several weeks. In addition, they were selected by German metal band, ASP, to open for them in Leipzig, and were asked to tour with Coppelius in Germany. Their latest album, The Bullet Within, was funded via Kickstarter and received support from Amanda Palmer and Neil Gaiman as well as their ever-growing devoted fans, now aptly named ‘The Flock’. The band sailed passed the £10,000 target and chose to work with friend and local Brighton producer Forbes Coleman (Radiohead, Stereophonics) at his award-winning Audiobeach Studios. “…The Bullet opens the album with a dark piano based track that is melodic and allows Fitzgerald to display a very impressive vocal range,” says Gordon Johnston of Glasswerk Magazine where as Q Magazinedescribed it as “a touch of class”, and music blog LouderThanWar called it “one of the finest albums of the year”. Their latest single, “Spiders,” features Gabby Young from Gabby Young and Other Animals - a song in which Mishkin and Gabby’s voices combine to create a dark and beautiful electronic masterpiece. Also featured on the album is Melora Creager of cello rock group Rasputina, who has also worked with iconic names such as Nirvana and Marilyn Manson. The Bullet Within has received a multitude of brilliant reviews that validate Birdeatsbaby’s growth and their ongoing desire to stay original. Their haunting, delicate, progressive and classical sound can be heard in every piece of music they have released, staying true to their imaginative vision and their non-compromising musical independence.
