Izabella:Thankyousomuch.Katie:I'dlovetojustjumprightin.Iknowthatyou're,inmymind,you'reoneofthetopexpertsinthisbyfar.AndsoIthinkyoucanreallyhelpgiveusanunderstandingofthyroiddiseaseandhowtoknowifyouhaveitandhowtofindanswers.Ithinkthat'sabigstruggleforalotofwomenismaybetheyhaveresearchedandfoundthattheythinktheymayhavethyroiddiseasebutactuallygettingtotherootofitandfindingaclinicianoradoctorwhocanhelpthemisawholedifferentstory.Solet'sstartfromthebeginning.Whydoyouthinkweareseeinghigherratesofthyroiddiseaseandespeciallyinwomen?Iknowyou'vewrittenaboutthis.Izabella:Youknow,it'saverygoodquestionandalotofithastodowithtoxicityinourenvironment.Soweknowthatoverthelastyears,we'velookedattheratesofthyroiddisordersandtheykeepincreasing.Andit'snotjustbecausewehavebetterdiagnosticmethodsbutit'sbecausewehaveallthesetoxins.Andsovariousstudieshavefoundthathowcloseyoulivetolikeachemicalplant,childrenwhowereexposedtotheChernobyldisasterandalltheseotherplaceswherewewerebasicallyexposedtotoxins,we'regonnaseehigherratesofthyroidantibodieswhichindicatethatthethyroidglandisunderattackandthatthepersoneitherhasHashimoto'sorGravesdisease,whicharetheprimaryreasonswhyapersonwouldhaveasluggishthyroid.SojustoneexamplewouldbeduringtheChernobylincident,childrenwithincloseproximityoftheincident,80%ofthemhadthyroidantibodies.ComparingthattoUkrainianchildrenthatwerealittlebitfurtheraway,youknow,thosechildrenonlyhadmaybe10%,15%ofthemhadthyroidantibodies.Sowhywomenhavethyroiddisease,thisissomethingthatkeepsmeawakeatnightandhaskeptmethinkingaboutthisquiteabitbecauseweknowthatforeverymanthat'sdiagnosed,wehavefivetoeightwomenthatarediagnosed.We'renowlookingatabout27%ofourgeneralpopulationwithHashimoto'santibodies.AndSynthroidwasthenumberoneprescribedmedicationforliketwooutofthelastthreeyears.Itwasnumbertwolastyear.Vicodinfinallybeatitout.Thepointis,SynthroidissyntheticthyroidhormoneandmostpeoplethattakethismedicationactuallyhaveHashimoto's.Andlookingthroughallofthethingsthatcouldbecontributing,soweknowthatpregnancy,puberty,andperimenopausearethreepeaktimeswhenawomanismorelikelytobediagnosedwiththyroiddisease.Andsoweknowthathormonesseemtoplayarole.But,youknow,hormonesalonedon'texplainthebigchangesbecausetherearesomewomenwhomaybenevergothroughpregnancyorwomenwhohaven'tevenbeenthroughpubertyandthey'regonnabemoreaffected.Andthenwehavethetheorywithpersonalcareproducts.Onaverage,everywomanuses12orsopersonalcareproductswheremenuseaboutsix.AndIknowthatyoutalkaboutthisthroughyourworkandyourblogthatalotofthepersonalcareproductsaregoingtobefilledwithtoxins.Sothey'regoingtobefilledwithendocrinedisruptors,they'regonnabefilledwiththingsthatdisruptthyroidhormones,thatupsetestrogenlevels.OneexampleisTriclosanwhichhasbeenaddedtotheanti-bacterialsoapsandit'salsonowaddedtoourtoothpaste.Andsothisissomethingthat'srecentlybeenbannedbytheFDAbecauseofthyroiddisruption.Andwehavethousandsofchemicalslikethatthatwe'repotentiallyexposedtoonaday-to-daybasis.Makeup,forexample,wefoundthatwomenwhouselipstickaremorelikelytohavelupus,anothertypeofautoimmunecondition.

Sure,nostudieshavebeendone.Butagain,thisisanotherfactorthatcanbecontributingtowhywomenhavehigherratesofthyroiddisorders.Andthen,youknow,whenIkindofthoughtaboutthisandIwentbackandIthoughtabout,like,okay,sowhywomen...whysomanywomen?BecauseIdon'tthinkpersonalcareproductscanaccountforallthis,Idon'tthinkhormonescanaccountforallthis.Sowhatelseisthere?Andgenerally,whenwethinkabouthowdiseasedevelops,fromanadaptivephysiologystandpointit'sgonnabefrompotentiallyawaythatitcouldbeprotective.Sothetheoryisthatpeoplegetautoimmunethyroiddiseasebecauseatonepointitwasprotective.Now,weknowthatintimesoffamineandwar,peoplewhodon'tneedasmanycaloriesandpeoplewhoarenotasadventurousandmorelikelytoretreatbackintotheirhomesweretheonesthatweremorelikelytosurvive.SooneexamplewastheIrishpotatofaminewherepeoplewhosurvivedtheIrishpotatofamineweremorelikelytobehypothyroidbecausetheydidn'tneedasmanycaloriestosurviveandgetby.Andsoinaway,hypothyroidismputsusinahibernation-likestate.Ithelpsustogetthroughtoughtimes.Sobackincavewomantimeswhenwewereallrunningaroundwith...runningawayfrombearsanddangerousanimalsandwerehidingfromthecoldweatherinourcavesandthathelpedoursurvival,itwaspossiblethatthyroiddiseaseplayedaprotectiverole.Also,weknowthatwomenhave,youknow,theprimarydutyofbringingnewlifeintothisworld.Ofcourse,mencontributebutwomen,we'retheonesthatcarrybabiesandwe'retheonesthatfeedandnourishthem.Andsoweknowthatintimesofwarandfaminewherethere'salotoftoxicity,there'snotgonnabe...forhelpingoursurvival,it'sprobablynotbesttobepregnantatthattime.Soitreallygoesbacktohowourbodieshavesortofadaptedtohelpingussurviveandhelpingourspeciessurvive.Sothat'skindofthewholetheorybasedonadaptivephysiologyisbasicallyanythingthatisthreatening,womenaregonnabeabletodialintothatandwomenaregonnabeableto...ourimmunesystemsaregonnabemoreresponsivetothatcomparedtomen'simmunesystemsbecausewehavetheimportantjobofbringingnewlifeintothisworld.Solongstoryshort,reallyanythingthatcouldbesettingoffyoursafetyalarm,makingyoufeellikeyou'renotsafe,whetherthatisanutrientdeficiency...so,youknow,incavewomantimesifyouwerenutrientdeficient,youwouldlikelynothaveenoughfoodsaround.Foodsensitivities,soanythingthatcausesyouinflammation.Incavewomantimeswewereprobablynoteatinggrassesandtheseotherthingsthatwe'reeatingnowthatarenotevenconsideredfoods.Infectionscanalsotriggerautoimmunethyroiddisease.Andifawomanhadaninfection,itwouldmakesenseforherprobablynottoreproduce.Andweknowthathypothyroidismissomethingthatslowsdownfertility.Andsothat'sanothermechanismthere.AndanotherthingthatIdon'tthinkalotofpeoplepayattentiontoorthinkaboutbuttrauma,aswellasstressfulevents,canactuallytriggerthyroiddiseaseaswell.Andwehavesomanydifferentstudiesoftraumaticevents,childhoodabuse,sexualabuse,beingprisonersofwar,anythingsthatreallycausetraumainourlivescancontributetothyroidhormoneabnormalities.So,youknow,inanutshell,anythingthatreallymakesusfeelunsafeisgoingtobecontributingtohigherlevelsofthyroiddisease.Andgenerally,beingawomanisnotassafeasbeingamaninourmodernworld.
