Izabella:Wow.SoHashimoto'sisthemostcommonautoimmuneconditionintheworld,anddefinitelyintheUnitedStates.It'soneofthoseconditionsthatsoundsreallyexotic,butit'sactuallyvery,verycommon.So,asmanyas20%ofusmighthaveit.Whatitis,isbasicallytheimmunesystemstartstorecognizethethyroidglandastheforeigninvader,startstoattackthethyroidgland,whicheventuallyresultsinusnotmakingenoughthyroidhormone.

Forwhatalotofwomen,what'sinteresting,it'sactuallysomethingquite,Iguess,youknow,Ilaughat,tosayit'sabitsuperficial,becausethiswasoneofthefirstsymptomsforme,washairloss.WhereIwasinmy20sandIjustthought,"Okay,maybebeingtiredisnormal,maybegainingweightisnormal.ButwhyamIlosingsomuchhair,thisjustshouldnotbehappening?"Solossofhairaswellasalossoftheeyebrows,dryskin,thesearesomeofthebigtelltalesignsthatyoumighthaveathyroidcondition.AndIknowforalotofwomen,thisisgonnabetheveryfirstthingthatwemightnotice.AndsometimesI'lllaughbecauseit'llbethehairdresser'sthat"diagnoseus"insteadofourdoctors.

Katie:Thatisfunny.

Izabella:Yeah,withme,withmystoryisIwaschronicallyfatiguedforalmostadecade.SoIwouldbasicallygotoworkinthemornings.I'ddragmyselfoutofbed,andI'dcomehomeandI'dbeexhausted,andthenI'dfallasleeparound9:00p.m.Andbasically,Iwouldsleepforanywherefrom10to12hoursandstillfeelexhaustedeveryday.AndthenIwentontohavemoresymptomslikeirritablebowelsyndrome,carpaltunnelsyndrome,Ihadhairloss,Ihadpanicattacks,Ihadcoldintolerance,whichisanothercardinalsymptomwhereIwaswearingtwosweatersinSouthernCalifornia.Andallofthesethingswerejustsortofhappening.

IfeltlikeIwasn't,"seriouslysick."Allthedoctorsweresayingeverythingwasnormal,butyetIfeltlikemybodywasbreakingitselfapart.Thiswaslike,asImentionedinmy20s,alotoftimespeoplemightgetdiagnosedwhenthey'reabitolder,usuallyaftertheyhavebabiesorevenduringperimenopause,pregnancy,pubertyandperimenopausearesomeofthemostcommontimeswhenwomengetdiagnosed.

Andso,Iwasjustwalkingaroundnotknowingwhatwasgoingon.Iwasveryforgetful.And,finallyIgotsometestingdonethatrevealedIhadHashimoto's.AndatthatpointIdecidedtoseeiftherewasanythingIcandotogetmyselfbetter.Istartedonmedicationswhichwasgreat.Asapharmacist,Ithoughttheywouldbe,thethingthatcuredme,andwouldbetheoneanswer,theonesolution,butunfortunately,themedicationshelpedmefeelalittlebitbetter.Iwentfromsleeping11hourstolike10hoursanight.Sothatwasahugeimprovementforme.ButatthesametimeIwantedtofigureoutiftherewasanythingIcandotogetmyselftofeelbetteraswellaspotentiallyfigureoutwhatwascausingorexacerbatingthecondition.Andthat'skindofhowIbecameaHashimoto'sexperts/humanguineapig,wastryingtofindmyownhealthwiththerootcauseapproachandtryingtofigureoutwhatmytriggerswere,andiftherewerelifestylechangesthatIcouldutilizetomakemyselfbetter.

Katie:Iknowyourworkhasbeensohelpfultomeandsomanyothers.Whataresomeofthecommontriggersthatyouseethatcan...thatarejustareallyprevalentinHashimoto?

Izabella:Someofthebiggesttriggersaregonnabefoodsensitivities,andtherearegonnabenutrient-deficiencies,therearegonnabeimpairabilitytohandlestress,impairabilitytohandletoxins.Alotoftimes,wemightalsoseethingslikechronicinfectionsaswellasissueswithgut.Sothesemightbethingslikeimpaireddigestion,alackofdigestiveenzymesaswellasintestinalpermeabilityoraleakygut.Andwecouldgointoalittlebitmoredetailsonallthoseifyou'dlike.

Katie:Yeah,I'dlovetospecificallytalkalittlebitaboutthegutconnection,becauseIknowthatwasakeyforme,isrealizingnotjustonlywhatIatewassoimportant,butmyguthealthingeneralreallyimpactedmythyroid.Socanyoutalkaboutthatconnection?

Izabella:Wow.Yeah,sowhat'skindofinterestingisthatthegutandthyroid,theysharethesamefetalorigin.Sotheysortofdevelopalltogether.Andalotofthethingswedothatimproveourguthealtharegonnaalsoimprovethehealthofourthyroidgland.

We'relookingatsomeoftheresearchonautoimmunediseaseingeneral,whichstatesthatbasicallyeverysinglepersonwithanautoimmuneconditionisgonnahavethreethingspresent.Andthosearegonnabethegeneticpredisposition,somesortofatriggerthatinitiatedorperpetuatedtheconditionandthenintestinalpermeabilityoraleakygut.

Andwhenwehavethisleakygutourimmunesystemdoesn'tfunctionproperly,andwedon'tdigestourfoodsproperly.Andourbodymayactuallymakeantibodiesagainstthefoodsthatwe'reeatingonacommonbasis.Itcouldmakeantibodiesagainstthingsthatarenormallypresentinourphysiology.Andso,whatwe'llseealotoftimesisapersonwillhavemultiplefoodsensitivitieswhentheyhaveHashimoto's.There'soneparticularantibodyknownasIGG,wherepeoplewillhaveantibodiestotheirthyroidandthefoodsthatthey'reeatingwithHashimoto's.Andalotoftimeswhateverfoodsthey'reeatingthatareIGG-reactivewillcauseareactionforthemwithintheirthyroidaswell.

Someoftheotherthingsweseearegonnabecommonly,verycommonlyaregonnabenutrientordigestiveenzymedeficiencies,specificallyindigestiveenzymesthatthebreakdownacidsorthatbreakdownfatsandproteins.ThisisgonnabeverycommonlyseeninpeoplewithHashimotos,andthatkindofcontributestotheviciouscycleofpoordigestionandthenwe'renotextractingnutrientsfromourfoodproperly.Thenwe'realsogonnabe,Ialreadyalludedtothat,we'regonnahavenutrientdeficiencies,andalotofthesenutrientsaregonnaberequiredforproperthyroidfunctionaswellasforpropergutfunction.

Andanotherbigthingisgonnabeanimbalanceofthegutflora.SopeoplewithHashimoto,abouthalfofthemmighthaveaconditionknownasSIBO,smallintestinalbacterialovergrowth,wheretheyhavetoomuchofbacteriainonepartoftheirintestines.Theymighthaveanimbalanceofgoodbacteriaversusbadbacteriaintheirgutandthatcanperpetuatetheautoimmunity,theleakygut,andinsomecases,theymightevenhavedifferenttypesofinfectionswithintheirgut.Parasiticinfections,theysoundreallyrareandexoticlivingintheUnitedStates.Unfortunately,they'revery,verycommon.I'vebeentestingtheguthealthofpeoplewiththyroidissuesformany,manyyearsandwilltellyouthatmajorityofthemwillhavesomesortofagutinfection,thatisiftheydon'timproveonjustnutritionalprotocolsalone.

Izabella:Sure.SowhenIwasinpharmacyschoolIlearnedabouthowtinysubstancescanimpactourphysiology.Andatfirst,Imean,Ithoughtitwasjustdrugs.Ithought,like,iffoodcoulddothis,thenIwouldhavesurelylearnedaboutit.Andeventhingslikelactoseintolerance,Iwasalmostskepticalofthem.Iwaslike,"Oh,well,it'sjustatinybitoflactose,whatcanitreallydo?"Wherereally,foodcanbeaverypowerfulally,toourhealing.Food,medicine,pharmaceuticals,herbs,allofthesedifferentsubstances,theysendtinymessagestoourbody.Andthey'llgiveourbodymessagesto,forexample,toourgut,it'llsay,"Sealyourself,right,andkeepallthisstuffinormakeyourselfleaky."Andthiscanbejustonaday-to-daybasismessagesthatweget.

Iknow,they'rekindofcontroversialinthepaleoworld,right,becausetheycanbe,"Youknow,aretheypaleo?Oraretheynotpaleo?"Andalotoftimes,we'llseethatpeopleintheinitialstagesofhealingmayneedtoeliminatethem.Andthenastheyhealtheirgutsmoreandhealtheirbodies,they'regonnabeabletoreintroducethembackin.

Cornisanotherinterestingfood.Oneofthechallengeswithcornisthatisthatit'sgonnabegeneticallymodified.Soifyouaregonnabelookingforcorn,makesureyoueattheorganicpine.Theotherissueisgonnabethatit'sveryhighinsugar.Andso,wemighthaveproblemswithitifwehavebloodsugarissues.Andthenanotherthingis,theproteinsincornunfortunately,aregonnabereactiveforsomepeople.So,cornisgonnabeoneofthetopfoods,oneofthetopgrainsthat'sgonnabereactiveforpeoplewithHashimoto's.

Alotoftimeswillsay,let'seliminateitifwehaven'tgottentheresultsthatweneedwiththeintrodiet,let'strytoeliminatecornandsomegrainstoseeifthatgetsridofadditionalsymptoms.Itissomethingthatcanbereintroducedback.IknowIusedtohavealotofproblemswithcorn.Iwouldlook18monthspregnantwheneverIhadjustlikeacornchip.Andeventually,Iwasabletointroducethatwithoutanykindofissuesnow,whereIcanwork.Ofcourse,I'llalwayschoosetheorganickinds,butIcaneatcornwithoutanyissuesnow.

Katie:Yeah,Ithinkaboveallthatsuchanimportantpoint.AndIthinkbookslikeyoursandyourworkarereallyhelpingtoraiseawarenessaboutthat,andnotjustraiseawareness,butalsogivepeoplethetoolstofigureoutwhatthatactuallylookslike.Andyougodeeponindividualizationandfiguringoutyourownbodyandallthenutrientswetalkedabout.AndIthinkthat'ssokey.
