Katie:Yeah.That'swhyIlovesomuchwhatyoudobecauseIfeelthatthenaturallivingsiteissomethingIhadresearchedsomuchandimplementedinmyownhome.AndIsawsomanyreadersimplementthesethings,andtheywouldseedrasticimprovements,asyouknow,inaspectsoftheirchildrenortheirownlives.Butitalsoseemedlikeifthishadbeenalongtermproblemwhereachildhadbeenhavingtofacetheseenvironmentalstressorstheirwholelife,therewasstill...eventhoughthechildwas,youknow,alotbetterandwasn'tstillhavingtofacethose,therewaslikeacatchingupthatneededtohappenorsomethingthatwasbeyondjusttheenvironmentandthefoodandallthethingsthatIhadresearched.AndsowhenIfoundyou,itwaslikeallthepuzzlepiecescameintoplace,andIrealizedthatyouwereabletodosomethingsounique.Sotalkusthroughthat.Howareyouabletoaccelerateoutcomesinsuchadrasticway?

Carol:Well,we'reabletodothatbecauseweuseveryspecificmodalitiesthatdoveryspecificthingsforthebrainandthecentralnervoussystem.With23yearsofexperience,Ihavefilteredoutandcreatedthecliffnotesofthemostorganizingprotocolsandmodalitiestochangethebrainforthebetter.Andweusesoundfrequenciesandboneconductiontomaketheconnectionsinthebrainthateitheraren'tthereoraren'tthereverywell.

WealsouseprotocolssuchasthesafeandsoundprotocoldevelopedbyDr.Porges,whichspeaksdirectlytothevagusnerve,whichispartoftheparasympatheticnervoussystem.Anditcanprovidethecalming,relaxingeffectanddecreasethestressresponseofthesympatheticnervoussystembystimulatingthesmallbranchofthenerveasitemergesontotheanteriorsurfaceoftheeardrumandearcanal.Virtuallyallchildrenwhohavealearning,attention,orbehaviorproblemorunderconsiderablestress,andinturn,theyoftenlacktheresiliencyandhavelittleabilitytocalmthemselves.Soweprovidetheirbrainwithorganizinginputwithfrequency,duration,andintensitywiththesemodalitiesanditiscalmingthesystem.Andthenwecanactivateandpinpointwithsoundfrequenciesconnectionstoveryspecificpartsofthebrain.

Forexample,withahertzbetweenzeroand750filtrationintheclassicalmusicthatwewillexposetheindividualto,thatspeakstothezone1sensorymotorportionofthebrainresponsibleforbalance,rhythm,coordination,muscletone,that'saverybigone.We'reseeingmany,manyMTHFRfriendswithsuper-lowmuscletonethat'sgonnanegativelyimpacteverythinggloballyfromhead-to-toe,themusclesoftheface,musclesinsidetheinnerear.Andifthoseareflaccidornotactivatedverywell,you'regonnaseeaplateauindevelopmentandyou'regonnaseeatypicaldevelopment,andforwhateverreason,thatissignificantlyontherise.

Sowewilldefinitelyexposethemtothesensorymotorfrequenciesinthatarea.Italsoconnectsthebraintobodyawareness,laterality,whichisinnatelyknowingtherightsideandtheleftsideofyourbody,yoursenseofdirection,behaviorandemotionalregulation.Oncewebuildthoselowerfrequencies,wecanthenmove

theindividualandexposethebrainintosomeofthehigherfrequencies.MyfavoritezoneisZone2,whichiscommunicationthat'sbetween750and3,000hertz.That'swherethespeechandlanguagebandwidthsareinthatarea.Themusicspeaksandstimulatesthespeechpartofthebrainwheretheindividualcanbetterdophoneticdecoding.

Wehaveseenchildrenincreasereadingskillstwoorthreeyearsbydoingalisteningfolderinthiszone.Theyhavebetterpitchdiscrimination,intonation,theirspeedofprocessingimproves.Oncewecangetthatbase,thatzoneismyfavoritebecauseoftheoutcomesthatweareseeingthataresodrastic.Forexample,wehaveadultfriendsfordifferentreasonswhohavenotspokenintheirentirelives.Thisonecaseinparticularisanadultwithanautismdiagnosisandhebeganourprogram.Westartouractivationprotocol,thesafeandsound,weexercisethemusclesofhisinnerearwhichhelphimprocesshumanspeechbetterbecausethemouthcannotproducewhattheearcannothear.Inthatactivationprotocol,itconnectsandstimulatesdifferentpartsofthebrain.

Oncewe'veactivatedtheinnerearandthebrain,wethenlayerinthosesensorymotortrackstogroundthatindividual,andgettothespeechandlanguagebandwidths.Itismuchdifferentthansittingacrossfromanindividualandtryingtomanuallycreatethosechangesinthebrainortryingtomanuallygetthemtomakesounds.It'sanold-fashionedwaytogoabouttryingtogetspeechdevelopment.Andthisfamilyhastriedallofthatallofhislife,andtheyhaven'tbeenabletostartthespeechprocess.

Butonceweexposehimtothespeechandlanguagebandwidths,henotonlybegantomakesounds,henotonlybegantosaywords,hecameoutwithacompletesentence.Andthecompletesentencewas,"Iwillgointhere."Anditreallyis...youknow,itdoesbringtearstoyoureyesbecausewhatachangefortheindividualandforthefamily.Theywerestunned.Motherandfatherweretherewhenhesaiditalongwiththefull-timecaregiver.

Andfromthere,youbegintounderstand,thebrainiscompletelyneuroplastic.Wecancreatechangesinthebrainthatproducefunction.Thebraindoesnotmatter,doesnotknowhowolditis.Itdoesnotknowwhatdiagnosisit'sbeengiven.Allitknowsishowtochangebasedupontheinputit'sgiven.Sowegiveitthemostorganizingandthemostintenseinputovertime,anditcreatesthehighwaypassofefficiencybetweenallpartsofthebrain.

Sothatindividualhadstagnated,buttherewerepartsthatwerestillpayingattention.Otherwise,youwouldn'tbeabletocomeoutwithacompletesentence.Youwouldhavestartedwith,youknow,theindividualsoundsofaninfant.Hisbrainwasabsorbingandprocessing,butitwasn'tabletofunction.Andnowknowingwiththelawsofneuroplasticity,wecanchangeallofthat.It'sjustveryexcitingandthrillingtobeabletoprovideittosomanyfamilies.

Katie:Yeah.Ittrulyisamazing,andIlovetheapproachverymuchtakesthemindsetthatI'veoftenheardmomssaying,thatIbelievemyself,thatwhenachildismisbehaving,they'renotbeingaproblem,they'rehavingaproblem.Certainly,thereis,youknow,timeswhenchildrenjustbehave.Butwhenthesechildrenwhohavethesestrugglesand,likeyousaid,theycan'tcalmthemselvesortheycan'tfocus,it'snotthat

they'retryingtobeaproblem,it'sthatthey'rehavingaproblemandnowthereisawaytoactuallyaddressthatthat'snotdifficultorpainfulorjust,youknow,likeyousaid,talkingorsomethingthat'shardforthemanyway,butit'scalmingandthattheycandointheirownhomeeven.

Andyoumentionedthewordneuroplasticorneuroplasticity,I'dlovetogoalittledeeperonthatbecause,Ithink,youknow,somanyofusarereallyonlystartingtounderstandthatandjusthowdrasticandwhatthatmeansforallofus,really,notjustchildrenwhoarefacingastruggle.Whatisneuroplasticity,andwhatdoesthatmeanasfaraswhatwe'reabletodowithourbrain?

Carol:It'smyfavoriteword.Iuseitalldaylong.Neuroplasticityisadiscoverythatthebraincanchangeitselfdependinguponthetypeofinputthatit'sgiven.Theideaoriginatedaroundthe1940withHead'sLaw,whichstatedthatsimultaneous,synchronousfiringofneuronsindifferentareasofthebrainpromotesincreasedneuralconductivitybetweenthose2areas.It'sneuronsthatfiretogetherwiretogether.Andwhatthatmeansisifyoudon'thavetheconnectionsinyourbrainforwhateverreason,it'sokay,wewillbuildit.

MyfavoritebookthathasreallybroughtneuroplasticityintothemainstreamisbyDr.NormanDoidge,a"NewYorkTimes"bestseller,andhisbookis"TheBrainThatChangesItself."AndIlovethisbook.It'ssoinspiringashegoesaroundandmeetswithallkindsofneuroplasticians,that'sactuallyatermthathetaughtmethatIuseformyselfandthetherapiststhatworkwithourclients.Andit'sthestoriesoftransformationthatarehappeningthatareoutsideoftheconventionalmedicalmodels,evenabilitytoconceive.Sowiththatbook,IloveitbecauseIactuallymethimseveralyearsago.AnditwasatanadvancedtrainingandintegratedlisteningsysteminDenver,Colorado.

Andhewasspeakingtoaroomfullofneuropsychologists,psychiatrists,therapists,andhebegantopullupdifferentcasestudiesofbeforeandafterwithneuroplastictherapyinbetween.Andhepulleduponefriendwhowasseverelyonthespectrum,verywithdrawn,verytypicaltypeofcharacteristics,lackofeyecontact,monotonevoice,verylimitedinterest.Andthenheshowedtheafter.Andthisindividualwasableto...becauseofcertainpartsofhisbrainthatwereactuallyverywelldeveloped,hecouldspeakwithgreatinflectionandanimationinhisvoiceandhisfaceasherecitedworksfromaplay.Andasheshowedthisonthescreen,Iwatchedthefacesandyoucouldheartheindividualsgaspingwithamazementat,"Wow,whatkindofchangestheseare."Itwasn'tasurgery,itwasn'tamedication,itwasjustneuroplasticintervention.

AndatthetimeIgaspedtoo,notbecauseIwassurprisedattheoutcomes,butIturnedtomysisterwhoisalsomybusinesspartnerandIsaid,"Waitaminute,that'sGray.Graydidthatyesterday.Andwaitaminute,Sister,isn'tthatLiam?Liamdidthesamething."Aswesatthereinthebackofthisroom,hebegantoshowanothercasestudyofagentlemanwithParkinson'swhowasverylimitedandhewasjustbecomingintothathardshellwithlimitedmobility.Andthenhewasexposedtocertainneuroplasticinterventions,andthentheyshowedhimskippingoverrocksonabeachthatwereslickandwet.AndwatchingasthisgentlemanwithParkinsonwouldtiptoeovertherockswithgreatbalanceandsmoothmovements.

Again,mysisterandI,welookedateachotherandwesmiledbecauseatthatmomentwerealizedthatwewereatthefrontiersofbrainscience.Whatweweredoingwasproducingthosetypesofoutcomeseveryday

forallofourfriends,dayinanddayout.Itwasamindexplodingtypeofexperience.Andfromthatpointwedecidedwe'resogoodatwhatwedo,wehavetogetthisouttoasmanyfriendsaspossible,asmanyfriendsinthecountry.Sowhatwedidiswesetoutandwenowhavetherapistin47states,certifiedoccupationaltherapistsandoccupationaltherapyassistants.Andweshiptheseprotocolsandmodalitiestoyourhome.Wewilltrainthecaregiversortheindividualthemselvestousethemintheprivacyoftheirownhome.Youdon'thavetoleavetogettoaclinic,you'renotdependentuponcliniciansorleavingyourhomeforthesetypesofchanges.Weteachyouhowtorollitintoyoureverydayexperiencebecauseovertime,that'showyou'llbuildthoseconnectionsinthebrainthatwillovercomedysfunction.

Strokeisanotherfavoriteone,right?Youhaveastroke,thehospitalsavesyourlife,yougothroughacoupleofrehabilitationweeks,yougettomaximummedical,theydischargeyouandtheysaygoodluck.Andyou'releftwithastagnatedbrainanddevelopment.Wehaveanolderclientwhowasinthatsameexperienceandoncehewasdischargedfromthehospital,hejustsatonthecouchalldaylongwatchingTV.Andhiswife,who'sarockstarwife,reachedoutandshewaslookingforeverythingthatshecouldfindbecausethetypicalmedicalmodelhadjustsaid,"That'sallwecando."Butsheknewsheneededtofindsomethingandshewasn'tgonnastopuntilshedid.

Andwhenshefoundus,ofcourse,weexposedhisbraintotheactivationprotocol.Weawokenhisbrainwithfivedaysoflistening.Thenoverathree-monthperiod,thisindividualwasexposedtothosesensorymotorbandwidthsthatItalkedabout.Thenweexposedhisbraintothecommunicationinspeechandlanguage.Thisindividualisnowabletohavegreateyecontact.He'sdoingthingsmorequickly.He'srememberingthingsfrom7to10yearsago.HecanrecognizehisgranddaughteronSkypeandengageinconversation.Ifhedoesn'thavethewords,atleasthecanreflectinhisfacialexpressionsandcontinuetoconnecttoher.Hecannowgotothebathroominpublicareaswithnoaccidents.There'slessdrooling,andhe'sinitiatingdoinglaundryforhimself.Thathislife,thatispurpose.Andthat'swhatthesetypesofmodalitiesaredoing.

Katie:Yeah.It'sastounding,thebrain'sabilitytoadaptlikethat.AndIguesswhenyoulookatitinaholisticway,likeyouwouldlookatthebodyinaholisticway,thebodyalwayswantstomovetowardastateofhealthandthebraininthesamewayprobablyalwayswantstomovetowardastateofhealthandfunctionandallthethingsit'ssupposedtodo.It'sjustsoencouragingtoknowthatevenifthere'sbeenatraumaorlackofnutrientsfromanMTHFR,orwhateverthecausemaybe,thatthere'sawaytohelprebuildthebrainevenifthat'salreadyhappened.BecauseIthinksomanyparents,especially,canfeelthathopelessnessoflike,"Oh,well,IthinkIfiguredoutwhymykidmaybehasthestruggle,"butthatdoesn'tfixthefactthatthechildhasthestruggle.

AndsoI'dloveforyoutospeakalittlebittosomeofthemostcommononesthatIgetquestionsabout,youknow,momsbothwithyoungchildrenandolderchildren.AndthosewouldbethingslikeADDandADHDandsensoryprocessingandbehavior,especiallythoseseemtobeverybigissuesformoms.

Yourollthesetoolsintheprivacyofyourownhomewithlicensedtherapists.Andyouwatchasanindividualbeginstoorganizeandtofeelbetterandtofunctionbetter.Andthat'swhenwegettoseemoreofthatuniqueindividualthatthey'reintendedtobeandtheycanfindtheirpurpose.Sowedefinitelysuggestthatthecaregiversdotheirlisteningbecausethey'vebeencarryingthedeficitsortheinjuriesandillnessesoftheirfamilyunit,andtheycanbeinasmuchdistressasthepeopletheyarecaringfor.Sotogether,theyallmoveintoanewchapteroffunctionandbettercommunicationwitheachother.

Carol:Well,thatwecandowhatwearedoing.Thephysiciansdon'tknow.Now,theonesaroundherewhereIlive,they'relearning.They'relearningbecausefamiliescomeinandtheycomplainoftheseissues,attention,behavior,learning,differentscarydiagnoses.Andthephysicianssay,"Well,okay,youcantrythisOT."Sotheycometousandtheystartworkingthroughtheseprograms.Butit'snotlikeanythingthatthefamilyorthecommunityortheworldhaseverseen.Andthentheygobacktothisphysician,andthephysicianislike,"Waitaminute,what?"Likelookatthisperson,youcanseeitclinicallywhentheywalkin,fromtheirbalancetotheireyecontacttotheirsocialskills.Andthen,ofcourse,whentheparentsarebringinginthestandardizedassessmentsofacademics,thenthephysiciansbegintoreferclientstousbecausethey'veseenitfirsthand.

Butthere'sawholeworldouttherewherethephysiciansdon'tknowaboutus,don'tknowaboutwhat'shappening.Butthat'swhat'ssowonderfulaboutyourpodcastandwhatyoudoisbecauseyou'recollectingnotonlypractitionerssuchasmyself,butallkindsofdifferentareasandgivingthefamiliesaccessandthepowertobeadvocatesforthemselves,tofindoutwhat'sgonnaworkforthem,andtostartgettingtoworktohealandrecoverbecauseit'soutthereregardlessofageandregardlessofdiagnoses.
