AndIguessapartofmerealizedinthatmoment,thisisprobablytrue.Like,I'mahealthprofessionalwhohasnotbeenveryhealthyinatruesense.AndsoIfollowedtheprotocolthattheyprescribedandcompletely,radicallychangedmylifestyle,myapproachtohealth,whichispartofthecatalystforcreatingthe131Method.AndthenIwentbackandscannedagain.Ididafollowupscanatexactlythetwoyearmark.AndKatie,Ireally...I'vesaidthisbefore,andit'sjustbeinghonest.Idon'tknowifIwouldhavebeenasmotivatedorasstrongofabelieverifIhadn'tseenthescantwoyearslatertoseelike,howremarkablydifferentmybrainwaslikebecauseit'syourbrain,like,youdon'tfeelthatdifferent.Idon'tlookthatdifferent.Andit'ssogradualforsomanyofuswhenwe'remakingthesehealthchoices,youhavetomakecertainsacrificesandsometimesyouhavetogiveupthingsanddothingsthatarehardthatyoudon'tfeellikedoing.Andyouwondersometimeslikeisthisworthitbecauseit'shardtomeasurehealthinareallyspecificmeasurablewaydaytoday.Buteventually,thatscan,it'snotcompletelyhealed,butlikemybrain,nightandday,they'rejustnotevensameasDr.Amen,youknow,says,"Youagedinreverse."Andthatwasenoughformetogolike,"Oh,thisstuffislikelegit,likethebodywantstohealitself,"whichmademeveryexcited.AndIthinkmyattitudeabouthealingmyhamstringreallyhelpedtheprocess.

Chalene:Sure.Soitwaspartofmyjourney,ifyouwill,thismajorhealthscare.Idon'twannasayhealthscarebecauseitwasn'tlikeitwaslifeordeath,butIwaslookingatwhattherestofmylifewasgonnalooklikebylookingatmybrainknowingthatIhadthegeneticmarkersforAlzheimer's,thencoupledwiththemistakesIwasmakinginwhatIthoughtwasahealthylifestyle.AtthetimethatIhadthatbrainscan,andIhadanumberonefitnessinfomercial,IwasintheGuinnessBookofWorldRecordsforhavingdonethemostexerciseworkouts.Peoplegivenmetheirtrustandtheylookedtomefordietandlifestylethingsthatwouldmakethemhealthier.AndwhatIwasdoingwasreallybasedonwhateveryoneelsewasdoing,whateveryoneelseissaying.AndIacceptedthingsasfactwithoutevergoing,"Iwonderifthat'ssubstantiatedbyastudyorarewejustsayingthis,like,andwhat'sthesciencebehindit?"

SoitwasneverthatIintendedtomisleadanyone.ItwasneverthatIknowinglywaslivinganunhealthylifestyle.Ijust,inthatratracethatwecangetsoeasilycaughtupinandthatweneedtoexerciseharderandlongerandwithgreaterintensityandnotrecognizing,like,ourbodiesweren'tmeanttoexerciseforfourhoursadayandsurviveonfivehoursofsleepandaninsaneamountofstress.Andjusttheamountofstressthatlikeourphonesandnotificationsandsocialmediademandsandallofthesethings,like,wedon'trealize,like,wewerenotbuiltforthat.Ourbodieshavenotevolvedtohandlethatkindofstress.Soyou'reinthisconstantstateofstressandoxidativestressandthetollthatthattakesonyourbody,andthentocouplethatwitheatingfoodsthatarejustfake.

Iwouldtellpeople,andIbelievedit.Itwasn'tlikeIwaslying.IbelievedIwould,peoplewouldsay,"What'syourdiet?"AndI'dsay,"Oh,it'sjustaverycleandiet.Ieatveryclean."Idefinedcleanthenas,aslowcalorieandaslowfataspossible,nocheats,notreats,nofriedfood,butcertainlysugarfreejello,whichisallfake,isfine.AndDietCokeisallfine.Like,that'scleaninmymind.AndasIcontinuedtoexercisemore,Ifoundthatmymetabolismwaslessandlesscooperative.Like,Iwasalmostlikeridingabikeandsomeoneeverydayisslowlytighteningthebackbreakandyoudon'trealizeit.SothenmyworkoutshadtobelongerjusttobeabletomaintainthesameweightthatIwasat.Beingoncamera,there'ssomuchpressureandtheseweirdconversationsthatarejusthorrible,andsomedayI'llwriteabookaboutthem.Butit'sjustsofreakingunhealthy.Like,"Gosh,ifwecouldjustgetyoudownalittlebitmoreinyourbodyfat,Oh,Chalene,itwouldbesoinspirational."You'relike,"Shit,I'mnoteveneatinganythingrightnow.I'mexercisingfourhoursaday.Howamgonnadothat?"AndIwouldjustkeeptrying,like,"Okay,okay,okay,itmustbesome...It'smygenetics.I'llcutbackmore."AndthemoreIdidthatwaslikethisviciouscyclewhereIwasdevelopinga

slowermetabolism.AnditwasjustmybodytryingtoaccommodatewhateveritwasIwasdoing.Ourbodieswannabeinhomeostasis.

AndthroughthatprocessofeatingallthosefakefoodsandthestressthatIwasunder,Istartedhavingthebrainissues,andthebrainandthegutconnection.AsIstartedtohealmybrain,IrealizedifI'mgonnahealmybrain,Ihavetostartwithmygut.Andthat'swhenIdiscovered,holycow,Ididn'tknowwhatleakygutwas.AndI'vebeensufferingfromitforyears.IhadnoclueandIwasvitamindeficientinalmosteveryessentialvitaminsandminerals.AndIjusthadtostartoverandgolike,"Okay.Let's...IguessIknownothingreallyabouthealth.Let'sstartoverandbecomeastudent."AndIbasicallyjustwentcrazydeeppassionateintothescienceandthestudyandmeetingwithexperts,andnotwithpeoplewhoaretryingtosell,booksorlikesellyousomething.Ijustreallywantedtoknowkindofatfirstjustforme.Andthenaswithmostthings,I'mlike,"Ihavetorightthiswrong."Imean,alotofpeopleneedtoknowaboutthis.Anditdoesn'thavetobesohard.Andthereisawaytoliveahealthier,happierlifeandhavefreedomfromfood.Andactually,weneedtoredefinehealthoutsideoftheseridiculouslyphotoshoppedimagesthatweseeonInstagramthatmakeusfeelhorrible.

Katie:Yeah.Oh,absolutely.Ithinkthat'ssokeybecausewe...onsocialmedia,especially,weonlyseeeveryone'sbestside.Butwhenyouseethatalldaylong,youassumethat'swhateveryoneactuallyislike.Andaswomen,especially,Ifeellikeyouputsomuchpressureonyourselftoliveuptoallofthosestandards.AndIhearsomuchechoesofmyownstoryandyourstoryaswellofjustpushingmyselfsohardincollegeandverylittlesleepandjusteatingwhatwasavailable,terriblefoodandatonofstress.Anditturnsoutthat'sactuallytheperfectwaytocreateanautoimmunedisease.AndthatwasmystoryandhowIgotintohealth.AndIfeellikeyoukindofhadthatsamething.Eventhoughyouwereinsomewayswhatpeoplewouldthinkofasthepictureofhealthbecauseyouwereinthefitnessworldalreadyandyouaredoingsomuch.SoIthinkthattakesatremendousamountofcouragetoadmitthatevenwhenyoulookedlikewhatmanypeoplewouldthinkwouldbeInstagramperfect,youstilldidn'thaveitallfiguredout.Andyoutookthatsteptoreallylook.

Chalene:Absolutely.ItwasprobablytheleasthealthyI'veeverbeenand,butyetstillbeingpraisedforit.Byanymeanspossible,that'skindofhowthefitnessindustry...Idon'tknowifyou'veevertalkedtopeoplewhoevendofitnesscompetitions.ButIcan'tthinkofanythinglesshealthythananindividual,andthereareexceptions,butfortheoverwhelmingmajorityofpeoplewhoareinthatstate,thatstateofmind,Imean,it'slegalizedeatingdisordersforthemostpart.Imean,it'sjustsounhealthy.It'snothingtodowithhealth.Bodyfatisonemoniker,onetinymeasure,butIthinkwhatworriesmethemostaboutwhatweseeinsocialmediaisthatweassumethatpersonishealthymentallyandphysically.Andtheymightnotbe.Theonlythingyouknowistheylookleaninthatphotoortheylookmuscular,whateveritis,butwereallydon'tknowmuchaboutwhat'sgoingonwiththeirhealth.Andsothat'swhatreallybecamethecatalystformecreating.Soittookmemorethantwoyearstofigureoutthesystemformyselfandwhatisthepaththatyouwouldwanttofollowandhowdopeoplesolvetheirownhealthproblemsandintheprocess,balancetheirhormonesandhealtheirgut.HowdoIdothatinsuchawaythatit's...itdoesn'tfeellikeyou'rebeingpunished?I'vealotoffriendswhohavedoneplentyofeliminationdiets,allthepopularones,whichIwon'tname.Butyouknowtheoneslike,thosearephenomenal.They'resogreatandthey'resohelpfulandsouseful.Butthey'resounrealistic,like,mostofthembecauseyou'retellingpeopletoeliminateeverything,insteadofgivingthemthe
