Overview

Created for practitioners from diverse healthcare fields and with varying levels of experience, this Teaching and Assessment for Nursing and Allied Health Educators online programme of courses will enhance the quality of clinical education. It will help those with teaching and mentoring responsibilities to become more proficient in adapting and structuring their teaching according to learner preferences and diverse educational settings; in facilitating effective learning both in planned and unplanned situations; in designing appropriate assessments; in delivering and receiving feedback; and in addressing potential challenges.

Throughout, this course encourages participants to review their profession-specific standards and domains, and underlines the fundamental role of service users within clinical education – whilst highlighting the issues of safety and consent.

Ultimately, this course will help educators ensure that the practitioners of tomorrow are fit to practise

This programme is developed for full and part-time lecturers and graduate teaching assistants in nursing and allied health schools including all practitioners with teaching, mentoring and assessment responsibilities.

Learning outcomes:

By completing this programme, participants will be better equipped to:

1. Reflect on how your skills correspond to official guidelines and standards specific to your field of practice

2. Adapt your teaching according to learner preferences and needs, curriculum and programme requirements, and diverse teaching and learning settings

3. Prepare both students and service users for the process of teaching in clinical and healthcare environments

4. Structure your teaching logically, and facilitate both peer-to-peer and interprofessional learning

5. Utilise learner (and other stakeholder) feedback in order to inform and enhance your own practice as an educator.

6. Explore the different types of assessment design, assessment management, associated record-keeping and the clinical teacher/mentor's role in student assessment

7. Investigate the themes of competence development and competency-based assessment

8. Mark assessments with the assistance of rubrics, and have a better understanding of how to document assessment activity

9. Explore the issues surrounding professional integrity and reflect on assessment challenges, such as 'failing to fail' students

10. Discuss the different types of assessment in clinical settings, including OSCEs, simulation and gaming activities

11. Examine ways to provide targeted and effective feedback, and utilise decision-making as a tool.

Clinical teaching and learning

Looks at how nursing and allied health educators should involve patients in the teaching process in order to enhance learning and inspire students. Participants will understand the value of patients in the learning process, how to prepare students and patients for the teaching and learning encounter, and how best to facilitate both planned and unplanned learning (including peer and interprofessional learning) and record-keeping.
