THE RAGAMUFFIN GOSPEL by Brennan Manning

Many believers feel stunted in their Christian growth. We beat ourselves up over our failures and, in the process, pull away from God because we subconsciously believe He tallies our defects and hangs His head in disappointment. In this newly repackaged edition Brennan Manning reminds us that nothing could be further from the truth. The Father beckons us to Himself with a “furious love” that burns brightly and constantly. Only when we truly embrace God’s grace can we bask in the joy of a gospel that enfolds the most needy of His flock—the “ragamuffins.” The world assigns value to people using measurable standards. Someone is a successful student if she receives A’s. Someone is a strong athlete if he runs five miles a day. The Lord, however, knows nothing of standards. The Ragamuffin Gospel was inspired by Brennan Manning after he discovered firsthand what it means to live by grace instead of performance. His words bring new life and sweet refreshment to Christians who are tired of never measuring up.

The Real Definition of Submission A Life of Memories

by Sharon Reidenbach

The small lamp gave a warm glow to the room, but his hands felt cool.

Sitting by his bed, Betsy tried to embrace the moments they had left. She hoped and prayed in the

recesses of his spirit he’d hear her.

“Hi, Will, it’s me, Betsy. The family said, “rest,” but I couldn’t. My mind flooded with memories, and

thought, ‘why not share those Cinerama shots together’.

Her fingers traced the outline of his face. “The first time I saw you riding your magnificent

stallion, my heart leaped right to yours. My little chestnut mare seemed fragile next to your big

steed. But it didn’t matter. We were hooked. Romantic love filled us leading to a late fall

wedding.”

Betsy adjusted the blinds capturing the late afternoon light. Looking out she smiled. “Starry-

eyed our counseling began with our pastor. But . . .” Betsy quickly sat back down grabbing Will’s

hand. “But to this day I’m still embarrassed how I flew out of my chair when he read Ephesians 5

and I heard, ‘Submit all to your husband!’ ”

“Oh, how I shouted, ‘You mean now I’ll have to muck your stallion’s stallh plus mine, and whatever

else you want?’ And what did you do? You wrapped me in your arms and whispered, ‘No way.’ And I

relaxed.”

“The pastor reassured me, and us, with Romans 12: 6-8, on how we each bring unique gifts to the

marriage table as helpmates. And said it doesn’t matter what nationality we are or if we’re male

or female, for we’re all one in Christ. (Galatians 3:28)

“Hard times? With my exuberance and your calm, we had more than our share. But thank you,

sweetheart, for your strength in bringing us back to center, our Christ. It’s my anchor today.”

“How we loved to ride. But you never faulted my abilities in front of our companions. Rather,

you’d ask me equestrian questions valuing my opinion.”

“And, when the culmination of our deep love arrived, little Ben provided another dimension to

the word, ‘helpmate’! Then honey, I confess, after Ben graduated from college, I overheard you

preparing him for his first job with 1 Peter 2:18 how ‘Whether married or a working single, in

any capacity, we are submissive servants’. In my heart you stood 9’ tall!”

Adjusting his blanket, a tear grazed his face. “And remember,” she chuckled, “Our arguments over

me learning the finances, investments and insurances? Thankfully you saw my reasoning. Now, as

hard as it is, unlike some of my friends who don’t know what bill-pay is, I’m prepared—for this

next step.”

“We had a good ride Will. With God holding the reins, our journey of love, whether up or down,

never lost its stride. And—forever—my heart is yours until the end of time.”

With the evening dusk, silence filled the room, and she held him.

* * * *

“What greater thing is there for two human souls, than to feel that they are joined for life—to

strengthen each other in all labor, to rest on each other in all sorrow, to minister to each other

in silent unspeakable memories at the moment of the last parting?”

- George Eliot

COLLEGE STUDENT ROOM WANTED My name is Caitlin and I am a student at Whitworth University. I am in need of a place to live for the next school year. If anyone has a place they are renting out or knows someone who has an opening or room available, I would love to get more information. It would be great if I could stay within a 20 minute radius of Whitworth; also female roommates, if it is a shared house. Please contact me at [email protected] if there is a place available and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Thank you!

DRESSES FOR GHANA AND GUATEMALA Pictured are 74 dresses that will soon be going with missionaries from Northview Bible Church to the schools

they sponsor in Africa and Guatemala.

The dresses are made of 100% cotton fabric because they are going to hot climate countries. The dresses are sizes X-LRG, LRG, MED, SML and TODDLER. Lace, buttons and other trim make every dress unique. There are no two alike.

With donations, we can continue this program. We can put to use material you bought but never used or a donation of floral, child oriented or patterned material in bright basic or pastel colors which are best. A piece of material several yards long will make multiple dresses. Colorful and pastel Extra Wide Double Fold Bias Tape is used to make the ties. 1/2” woven or knit elastic is used at the top of the dress to help each dress fit. All are needed items or with a donation of a few dollars.

You’re welcome to join those of us that make the dresses. Please call the Rockwood Hawthorne Activit ies Department (466-0411). Leave your name and phone number and you’ll be contacted. It’s a fun and encouraging activity.

6-MONTH HOME FOR SWEET KITTIES We are moving and our rental does not allow pets. :( We have 2 sweet cats that need a home while we are in transition for 6 months.

Gus Gus is a long- haired maine coon cat who is almost 2 yrs old. He is beautiful, easy and latches on to one person. He does not prefer to be held but to be near you and have you pet his beautiful fur. He is neutered.

Jack Jack is a 6 month old all black,“cross eyed” (his eyes are so black he looks cross eyed when he is a tired, kitty). He would

love to be held and coddled all day long. He is truly the sweetest thing.

They are litter box trained and indoor cats. They are not declawed. I would love for them to be housed together, but if that doesn’t work out obviously that has to be

alright. They would be fine separated. Cole & Wendy Speer Wendy cell - 509-714-5366 Cole cell - 509-475-5180
