EPACC Athletes’ Handbook 2017/18

WelcomeWelcome to St Mary’s University Endurance Performance and Coaching Centre (EPACC) in partnership with Virgin London Marathon.

Over the past decade St Mary’s has established itself as the best endurance programme in the country, with athletes such as Mo Farah, Jo Pavey, Andrew Osagie, Charlie Grice, Beth Potter and Steph Twell, along with groups from Kenya, Australia, New Zealand and the US choosing to base themselves in the area. Part of the EPACC’s remit is to make a difference to British endurance running by creating a critical mass of elite, emerging elite and developing runners who can work together with high quality coaches to raise standards.

The EPACC provides students with a unique opportunity to continue your studies within a dedicated environment designed to support your athletic development.

Student athletes already benefitting from the support that the EPACC can provide include Ellis Cross, Emily Moyes, Theo Blundell, Petros Surafel, Paulos Surafel and Tom Hook.

You have joined the country’s most successful and prestigious university for endurance running – it commits itself to you and expects your commitment in return.

This handbook outlines not only our expectations of you as an athlete at the centre but also the support that you can expect from us.

Training Sessions and Group RunsSquad training sessions take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Sessions are held on the St Mary’s track, on the grass pitches at the University’s Teddington Lock site or in nearby Bushy and Richmond parks. To make the most of the opportunity that the centre provides athletes are expected to participant in squad sessions.

There will also be scheduled group runs and strength and conditioning (S&C) sessions at other times during the week. EPACC coaches will work with existing coaches to discuss training plans and how best you can use the resources available to you. Please ensure that when running to Bushy and Richmond parks you run in groups of 3 or 4, splitting up if required. Just remember to be courteous to all members of the public and remain mindful of your responsibility as an EPACC athlete.

Coaching SupportSt Mary’s EPACC employs two full-time professional coaches; both have a wealth of experience having coached many athletes through the endurance pathway to major championship success. The centre coaches are responsible for coaching EPACC athletes.

Although some athletes will want to be entirely centre coached and some will have existing coaching relationships. Both are absolutely fine, but every EPACC athlete must link into the centre to receive the support available to them and that the EPACC coaches will coordinate with home coaches to arrange this. Regular contact and good communication between the EPACC coaches and all athletes is essential.

We have one EPACC squad that consists of two training groups; sometimes the squad will train together, sometimes alongside each other and sometimes separately. The coaches will coordinate this and all athletes will be advised of the training sessions and times. Although there are two coaching groups, it is encouraged that athletes take advantage of training together, such as for steady running, drills and S&C.

Communication is a vital part of any coach/athlete relationship and is a two-way process. Issues may occur but the key for coaches and athletes is to communicate as early as possible to work out what can be done to improve the situation. The coaches recognise that athletes may sometimes question their coaching setup; this kind of discussion can be challenging, however the following is the appropriate procedure to follow:

} The athlete needs to arrange a meeting with their respectiveEPACC coach. When dealing with any issue a solution canonly be made through communication and with an agreedaction plan.

As part of this process it is vital that the athlete reflects on their commitment to training and that their lifestyle is conducive to realistic ambitions and performance goals. The coach will also reflect on the situation.

*Please see Appendix 1 for all expectations that are requiredto become a member of the Endurance Performance andCoaching Centre.

Competition RequirementsAt the beginning of the academic year your EPACC coach will meet with you to discuss your training and performance goals for the year.

EPACC student athletes are expected to compete for the University in a range of appropriate competitions. This is important in terms of your own personal athlete development, but also with regard to a range of outcomes including the squad’s performance and creating a profile for the EPACC programme. You will be expected to represent the University at one or more of the following championships each year: BUCS Cross Country Championships, BUCS Indoor Championships and BUCS Outdoor Championships. Your EPACC coach will discuss this requirement with you in more detail depending on your event. You may also be expected to compete at the London Colleges Cross Country League, Varsity and other competitions, which will be defined as your training plan unfolds. The EPACC coaches may even look to target events such as the BUCS duathlon, triathlon and orienteering that are complementary to the programme and provide appropriate competitions for some athletes.

Last and certainly not least, competing alongside and supporting your peers in the ‘blue and white’ of St Mary’s will provide some of your best experiences at university.

EPACC Athletes’ Handbook 2017/18

EPACC Altitude Training StrategyIn 2016/17 EPACC athletes attended some of the UKA altitude camps in South Africa, Font Romeu and US. 65 athletes at St Mary’s also attended an altitude camp in Font Romeu in April. The EPACC-run altitude training trips have been hugely successful and have proved to be a great build up for the summer season. When you can focus on your training and recovery like you can out in Font Romeu the results start to show and it is no wonder the world’s best endurance athletes base themselves at altitude for periods through the year. We would highly recommend you make the most of these excellent opportunities/experiences. The plan for the coming year is for athletes to again attend the UKA camps and for St Mary’s to organise another three-week altitude training camp around the Easter break. Venue and costs will be communicated to athletes at the end of October.

EPACC Athlete LifestyleAthlete lifestyle is an important factor in performance. Being a successful athlete will often mean balancing a number of different aspects of your life with your training. During the first weeks of term you may find that there are a lot of distractions as you acquaint yourself with the campus, your academic timetable and training schedule. Allow yourself time to adjust into your new routine, ensure that you are getting enough sleep and eating regular healthy meals. If you have any problems or concerns feel free to discuss them with your EPACC coach or another member of EPACC staff. Your queries will be taken seriously and in confidence.

We will throughout the year be holding EPACC social events such as going bowling. These have proved very popular on our altitude training camps and are something we will be introduce during term time. Team cohesions is a major priority for the EPACC and we enjoy being able to bring everyone together with events like these.

EPACC Drugs PolicyThe EPACC and St Mary’s University has a no tolerance policy on the use of performance enhancing and recreational drugs. Athletes should familiarise themselves with the University Clean Sport Commitment (see appendix 3), the 100% Me programme and prohibited substance database (globaldro). It is the athlete’s responsibility to seek advice if they have any doubts about any medication or treatment they are receiving.During the first week of term there will be a drugs awareness talk which is compulsory for all EPACC athletes to attend. Details will be sent out closer to the time.

MembershipsFitness and Conditioning Suite and Running TrackThe EPACC programme has scheduled sessions in the fitness and conditioning suite on a weekly basis, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 9am-1pm. If you wish to use the fitness and conditioning suite outside of these times then you must become a member.

If an athlete is to become injured they will be placed on an injury list held at Sport St Mary’s reception, enabling the athlete use of the fitness and conditioning suites out of EPACC hours so that they can complete their cross-training sessions.

These meetings will also give you an opportunity to raise any issues or concerns with us. Throughout the year you will also meet with your coach on a one-to-one or small group basis. Your coach will liaise with you about this if you need to talk about something.

Academic RequirementsAs an EPACC athlete most of you will have made a commitment to a course of study within the University. It is vital to stress that you must complete required assessments and be successful in your degree to continue to be part of the EPACC programme. Your EPACC privileges may be revoked if you fail to pass the required assessments or do not actively seek the support available to you as a student. Your coach will place as much importance on your studies as they do with your training.

Being a good student is likely to be reflected in your approach to running and other areas of your life, and for those doing sport-related degrees it may even directly inform your development as an athlete. Also it may provide some thinking time when you are not training, providing a healthy balance as each area will feed off the other.

As an absolute minimum it is important that you attend all of your scheduled lectures and seminars, and complete assessments to the required deadlines. If any issues arise, academic staff are there to help you pass your degree and the EPACC coaches will support this. If you have any issues or clashes you should approach your academic tutor and/or EPACC coach as soon as these arise so that they can be resolved.

Living in Athlete AccommodationCurrently, dedicated on campus athlete accommodation enables some EPACC athletes to live together as a community, within a performance environment that places emphasis on athletes leading a lifestyle that is conducive to training, development of performance and academic achievement. Being onsite means that the EPACC athletes are located near to the facilities and services that are available to them.

The EPACC athletes currently housed in student accommodation are in Clive U, Clive S, Clive T and 35 Waldegrave Park. In addition 5 Waldegrave Park is an elite performance athlete house for student athletes and non-student athletes who are Great Britain qualified or highlighted as an athlete who could potentially make a future GB team. Athletes living in University accommodation are subject to the Terms and Conditions outlined in the on campus student accommodation licence agreement 2017-18. All EPACC athletes in the halls are expected to behave in a way that develops and supports a performance environment.

For first year EPACC student athletes, Clive S and T halls provide a unique opportunity to live and train together in an environment that supports and develops training ethos and performance.

Accommodation for EPACC student athletes cannot be guaranteed beyond level one. In 2018/19 a limited number of places may be available for EPACC student athletes studying at level two. Final consideration regarding accommodation is at the discretion of the EPACC coaches and is subject to the athlete adhering to the below criteria:

} Regular commitment to training

} Being a member of the St Mary’s Athletics Club

} Subject to injuries the athlete has competed for St Mary’s

} Previously demonstrated behaviour in a manner that meetsthe EPACC performance and coaching ethos as well as atall time show consideration towards other athletes within theuniversity environment

Athletes wanting to be considered for accommodation beyond their first year will be required to submit their application (appendix 2) to the EPACC by 30th March 2018, outlining how they have met the above criteria.

} Please note: whilst the decisions on Athletes eligibility foraccommodation lay with the EPACC, any sanctions issuedby the University resulting from previous breaches of theAccommodation Licence and/or misconduct will also betaken into consideration and adhered to.

The EPACC coaches will endeavour to inform formally all athletes of the outcome by the end of April 2018.

Continued support from Virgin London Marathon enables EPACC athletes, students and non-students, to reside at 5 Waldegrave Park. It is only possible to include this hostel in the programme through the support of Virgin London Marathon. Consequently, the EPACC coaches and Virgin London Marathon will jointly decide which athletes remain in residence on the basis of commitment to training, contribution to the performance environment and the EPACC programme. After joint consideration the EPACC coaches will formally notify athletes of the outcome by the end of April 2018.

At the beginning of each semester there will be an official halls meeting held by the Accommodation Service which will outline the rules, regulations and general expectations of you during your time in university accommodation.

It is essential that EPACC athletes living together have respect for each other and those around them. You must not make excessive noise late at night nor have guests in your room as you may disturb other athletes who are trying to sleep.

Page 8: EPACC Athletes’ Handbook 2017/18€¦ · competitions, which will be defined as your training plan unfolds. The EPACC coaches may even look to target events such as the BUCS duathlon,

8

You are expected to live a lifestyle conducive to athletic performance and support the commitment of others living in the athletic communities. Students who have received any disciplinary sanctions related to behaviour in halls will not be considered for accommodation both during term time and the summer holidays.

University Vacation/Summer Accommodation AgreementThe University requires students to move out of their accommodation during closures at Christmas and over the summer period. Sometimes special arrangements can be made for EPACC athletes to remain in their accommodation during the summer in order to minimise the impact on their training. If you would like to be considered to remain resident during this time please inform your EPACC coach at the beginning of semester 3. The EPACC coaches will decide which athletes will be considered to be in halls over the holiday periods on the basis of meeting the criteria mentioned in the accommodation section. Please note that places in accommodation during the summer are very limited so this is subject to the University being able to accommodate your request.

Media Training and CommitmentsAs an EPACC athlete you act as an ambassador for the EPACC and the University at all times. It is important that we promote the centre and encourage athletes to come here so that the centre can continue to develop. When you are interviewed by the media, we encourage you to mention the coaching, facilities, accommodation and support services at St Mary’s EPACC and how this has benefitted your progress. Athletes are not expected to make statements that are unfounded and that they don’t personally believe in, but we would ask you to reflect on what the EPACC programme offers, the support that the partners involved provide and to highlight this in an appropriate manner. The EPACC can provide you with training in this aspect if required.

In particular, note that intentionally misrepresenting the University, inappropriate use of internet social networking sites, which demeans individuals or groups, and inappropriate use of internet sites that adversely affects the reputation of the University are all examples of gross misconduct and will be sanctioned. EPACC athletes should be familiar with the University College General IT Policy and Student Disciplinary Procedures (available on the e-portal).

On occasions you will be expected to represent St Mary’s at external events such as speaking at schools, presenting prizes or local press sessions. This is important to the University and very good experience for you. The runners who have done

this so far have presented an excellent picture of themselves and St Mary’s. Without doubt the best advert for the EPACC is the athletes themselves. The following statements provide examples of what our athletes have said:

“The London Marathon has played a huge part in the success of my career to date. Their support through the St Mary’s EPACC started with a full scholarship in 2005 while studying for my degree and has branched to medical backup and a room in the athlete house where I am currently living. Support like this is fundamental to increasing the upward curve in performance to any athlete’s career and I wouldn’t be where I am today without the London Marathon and EPACC.”Andy Vernon – EPACC athlete

“Everything an athlete can ask for is given to you on a plate here at St Mary’s. With athletes all living in the same halls next to the sports centre and the track, running is just constantly around you, greater enforcing the athlete lifestyle.”Richard Goodman – EPACC athlete

“I came to St Mary’s University for the great Strength and Conditioning science degree on offer along with the success associated with the EPACC and the environment it is in and surrounded by. The area is second to none for endurance running, the abundance of trails and parks for runs and sessions provide the ideal place to carry out what is necessary to become a successful athlete. The EPACC helped me overcome the endless injuries I was encountering with the opportunity to use the discounted physio rates to find out what the problems were. The use of the gym then enabled me to rehab effectively whilst cross-training. The depth of the training groups enables top quality training sessions by two of the top endurance coaches in the country and has brought me on as an athlete, helping me achieve my first international vest for England.”Sarah Astin – EPACC athlete

“London Marathon and EPACC gave me the opportunity to experience altitude for the first time in November, which was really beneficial. Moving into the London Marathon performance house has relieved financial pressure, due to the support, and has allowed us to be surrounded by athletes of a similar standard. The EPACC Centre has helped further my progression this year by making regular physio and gym facilities accessible, which has helped with injury prevention.”Adelle Tracey – EPACC athlete

“London marathon and EPACC have helped me so much this past year. It is a real privilege being in the athletes house with some of the best guys in the country and being so close to great facilities on the St Mary’s Campus. I’ve had so much support from the physio team at the St Mary’s clinic, helping to get me on the start line for the Commonwealth Games and

European Championships in one piece. As well as that, the S&C coaches and psychologists have really helped me out with my training programme. I’ve spent some time doing training sessions in the lab in the altitude chamber. It’s also great having my own coach based at St Mary’s as well as a great group of people to train with!”Beth Potter – EPACC athlete

Volunteer and Paid Coaching OpportunitiesSIMMSport, St Mary’s sports programme for children, is looking for enthusiastic and reliable athletes to help deliver its junior athletics club, SIMMSAthletics.

Sessions are during university term-time on the track:

} Monday 5-7pm

} Tuesday 5-7pm

} Wednesday 6-7pm

} Saturday 10am-1pm

Coaches are able to gain qualifications, experience and paid roles (depending on experience) from being involved with SIMMSport. All our coaches begin with a trial period.

The coaching at SIMMSport is provided by students from St Mary’s many of whom are studying sport and teaching subjects. The programme gives students a chance to develop their coaching skills by leading sport sessions each week.

SIMMSport coaches are led by the Sports Development team at Sport St Mary’s. A development pathway is in place for all our coaches – whether you are a volunteer or a qualified coach. All coaches are supported in developing their coaching qualifications (e.g. NGB Qualifications, First Aid, Safeguarding Children, etc.). This improves the coaches’ competency and raises the quality of the sport for those young people in the sessions.

Many students also utilise coaching on SIMMSport to earn credit for their degree programmes. This allows them to gain experience of working with young people, National Governing Bodies and other sports organisations. They can then apply this experience to their degree and then in their career after graduating. Research shows that students who chose to get involved with programmes like SIMMSport during their degree increase their chances of employment after graduating.

How we support Clean Sport.

By delivering high quality opportunities for sports performance and participation, supported by high quality sports facilities. To create a culture of high expectation within sport and enriching experiences through sport, for all University communities: through excellence, collaboration and innovation. The University takes pride in developing students as the next generation of elite sportspeople, future coaches, sports therapists, sports scientists, nutritionists, and teachers.

Sport St Mary’s and St Mary’s Students’ Union work closely together to offer a comprehensive sporting package to both students and staff, working and studying at St Mary’s University.

Providing a rich and varied opportunity for sport, either recreationally, or by representing the University in, individual, league, or cup competition. St Mary’s also supports our elite student athletes representing the country on the National and International sporting stage. Sport is an essential part of the student experience.

At St Mary’s University, athletes have the right to compete in sport knowing that they and their competitors, are clean, from beginner to elite level. The University is committed to clean sport

This means we help to educate athletes so they understand what substances they can and can’t take. Sportsmen and women want to know that other athletes are competing fairly, that it is a competition of talent and that all performances are natural. This is the spirit of sport.

St Mary’s University works in partnership with UK Anti-Doping, delivering their prevention programme for athletes called 100% me, which provides information and education to support athletes, to compete fairly and keep up-to-date with anti-doping information

100% me is about being a true athlete. It's about being able to say my performance is 100% me. There is no secret to my success - just hard work, determination and talent. It is about being successful, confident and retaining the values of clean, fair competition.

St Mary’s University is a clean sport university and works in partnership with UK Anti Doping (UKAD) to uphold these values.
