Petrel TIPS&TRICKS from SCME&P SOLUTIONS

Petrel Studio – Part 1 The Petrel Studio was new to Petrel 2011, was augmented with new features in Petrel 2012 and contains a variety of useful features to help locate data and annotate maps. This is the first of two TIPS&TRICKS on the Studio. The topics covered are:

Favorites pane: The Favorites pane is meant to allow a user to group data, processes, windows, etc. in one location instead of having them spread over all of the Petrel Explorer panes. Data from any other pane may be dragged‐and dropped into the Favorites pane. The default location of the Favorites pane is between the upper and lower Petrel Explorer panes.

It has all the features of the other panes. It can be separated from its location and floated on the screen, deleted, moved to another location, etc. If the Favorites pane isn’t showing, select from the pull‐down menu: View Panes Favorites.

You should now be able to see the Favorites pane. As with all other panes, an alternative way to retrieve the pane is to select from the pull‐down menu: Tools System settings Effects. Now press the Reset layout button. All windows are now returned to their default positions, including the Favorites pane.

You may drag objects from the Input pane to the Favorites pane. Just click on the object and‐‐holding down the left mouse button‐‐drag it to the Favorites pane. The data will appear in that pane and also appear in the original pane. For example, drag Wells and Well Tops from the Input pane to the Favorites pane. Notice that they now exist in both panes.

Note the small arrows pointing to the upper right in the Favorites pane. This indicates the data is a “shortcut” and not the actual data. A “shortcut” is just a pointer to the actual data still located in its original pane.

You may also drag objects from other Petrel Explorer panes. For example, drag the Make/edit surface process from the Processes pane into the Favorites pane. Also drag 3D window 1 from the Windows pane into the Favorites pane. Using this procedure can put all data, which will be used repeatedly, together in one place.

Data may be accessed from either the Favorites pane or the original location. To make the 3D window active, check the box in front of the window name in either the Favorites or Windows pane. Display the wells and tops by checking the box in either the Favorites or Input pane.

Double‐click on the Make/edit surface process from either the Favorites or Process pane to bring up the Settings menu. Enter all parameters as you normally do. When OK is clicked, the new surface is created and placed in its normal location at the bottom of the Input pane.

Again, you may drag things from any other pane to the Favorites pane. This includes templates from the Templates pane, workflows from the Workflows pane, 3D grids from the Models pane, etc. Below is an example of the Favorites pane with data from many other panes.

If you don’t want an object in the Favorites pane any longer, you may delete it from the pane. Two methods are available.

1. If you right‐click on the object and select Delete Shortcut, after confirmation, only the shortcut in the Favorites pane is deleted. The data remains in the original pane.

2. Your other option is to choose Delete. This not only deletes the shortcut in the Favorites pane, but also deletes the data in the original pane. In our opinion, this is a dangerous option as mistakes can easily be made.

The Favorites pane can be very useful to Petrel users. It can be used by new or casual users who aren’t as familiar with Petrel and don’t want to try to find data in all the panes when they need it, by users of large projects who want to consolidate heavily‐used data in one place when they need it so they don’t have to search for it or by anyone who wants ease of use.

Studio Find:

Studio Find allows you to search not only your currently open Petrel project, but also other projects you have indicated you might like to search. The searches are only applied to the Input pane of the indexed projects. The searches may be filtered on specific data and/or parameters and then imported into the working project (currently open in your Petrel session). First, you must configure Studio Find. Then you can use it. The other projects may be on your local computer, on a company intranet or internet or, eventually, the Studio Knowledge Database.

First, you must index all Petrel projects in which you wish to look for data. Open the first project, in the example below, it is called: S‐GF‐Input Only‐2012. Remember to click on the .pet file.

1. Choose File Update search index.

Next, open another project, in this case: S‐GF‐Mapping Data‐2012. 1. Again, choose File Update search index.

2. Repeat for any other projects you will want to search.

Now, return the current working project to your main project. You can check on the indexed projects by clicking on Tools Search Settings.

1. This brings up the Search settings window.

a. Highlight the Default row (StudioIndex in Petrel 2011). b. Click on the View or edit the selected index icon.

1. This brings up a window showing which projects have been indexed. In this case, three projects have been indexed.

2. Assuming all the projects we need are indexed, we can continue. Close these windows.

You may create other searches to look in different sets of Petrel projects. Activate the set to use before using the Studio Find toolbars.

If the Search toolbar isn’t showing, click on View Search toolbar to make it visible.

To search for data, you can type a name to search for into the box on the Search toolbar or, to list all data, just click

on the Search icon . In the following example, we want to search for an object with Tarbert as part of the name. In this case, you type

the name Tarbert into the box on the Search toolbar. Click the Search icon.

1. Petrel now goes out and searches all indexed projects in the active set for any objects with Tarbert in the name.

2. The Petrel graphics area now shows a Search Filter, a 3D window with all the objects displayed and a Table showing the Search results. These results will be all the objects named Tarbert in the indexed projects. (An object will also be displayed if it is in a folder with Tarbert in the name.) Notice how none of the objects tell you which indexed project they are in.

3. All objects will be displayed in the 3D window. This can be very cluttered if many objects are returned. View whichever objects you want by, like anywhere else in Petrel, checking or un‐checking the boxes in front of the object names.

4. You may look at information on any object. To get information on an object, right‐click on the object and choose Details.

5. Choosing Details on the Top Tarbert surface brings up a menu telling you a lot about the object. (You’ll probably have to make the window larger to see everything.)

6. To load only this object into the working project, you may click on Load and the RPT will appear to transfer the data.

7. If you want to load an object or multiple objects without being in the Details window, highlight the name or names in the Search results pane, right‐click on one and choose Load.

8. A window detailing what you have chosen is displayed, this allows you to continue by pressing the Next

button . If you don’t want these items, press the Close button .

9. Petrel will next display a window asking if you want to use Silent mode. Only use this mode when you are experienced with this tool and are sure you have checked the correct objects to transfer. Otherwise, unwanted things may happen.

10. The Petrel project for the first object is loaded into the Reference Project Tool (RPT). This could be the indexed project which contains the interpretation. Note the boxes for the data to load in the RPT are already checked. All you have to do is press the Receive from background project icon.

11. After pressing the Receive from background project icon and closing the RPT, Petrel brings up the next project with data to load into the RPT. This could be the project which contains both the faults and the surface. Again click on the Receive from background project icon.

12. This repeats with other projects until all data is transferred to the working project.

13. After closing the RPT from the last project, you are back in the main working project. Note that the top level folders for the transferred data were brought over.

14. Normal RPT rules apply here. a. The Coordinate Reference System (CRS) must be the same in the projects. b. If the GUID of an object copied over is the same as the GUID of an object in the working project,

the object in the working project is replaced. If the GUID of the copied object is not used in the working project, a new object is created in the working project.

If the box in the Search toolbar is empty, all files from the indexed projects will be retrieved by the search. To do

this, press the Search icon.

All data from the indexed projects is now shown.

You may look at the results in three ways; by Table, by Tree or Tree ‐ grouped by project.

If the results from the search aren’t exactly what you want or you are having trouble finding the object or objects you are looking for, you may filter the search.

1. This is where the Search filter pane is used. To use it click on one of the options. You may filter the results by:

a. Keyword (similar to putting a word in the Search toolbar) b. Data types (Surfaces, Lines, Seismic, etc.) c. Spatial (in a certain X‐Y range) d. Minimum Elevation (only objects deeper than a specified depth or time) e. Data range (objects with a specified depth range) f. User (objects in the projects which were created by certain users) g. Projects (objects from only specified projects, not all indexed projects) h. Data source type (objects from specified sources only, i.e. – Created in Petrel or elsewhere) i. Index (Default search index or change to another; see the Indexed Projects above)

2. For example, you may filter the search results by datatype. a. Open the “Data types” folder under the Search Filter b. In this example, only 3D seismic was checked. This filters the search results to only objects of 3D

seismic type.

3. User allows you to filter only on data created by a certain user. In this example, only the user RRowe is used. The list shrinks to just files created by that user.

4. Project allows you to pick data from only one or more indexed projects. In this example, we are only getting data from the Seismic and Mapping Data projects (not the InputOnly project.)

5. Multiple filters may be used simultaneously. To turn a filter off, click the small X in the upper right corner of the filter.

You must be careful when using Studio Find. If you try to load data from an indexed project that is being used by another Petrel session, as in regular RPT use, the data might be changing as you load. Be sure to contact the other user to ensure it is safe to use the project.
