Gymnastics is defined as a physical exercise and competition that uses special apparatuses
to develop and demonstrate strength, balance, coordination and body control.
It often involves dance moves, flips, twist, jumps and other skill moves.
It can be performed as a way to stay fit or specifically to compete locally, nationally as well
as internationally.
Gymnastics is unique because it is a year-round sport.
The sport's roots lie in ancient Greece, where gymnastic exercises were part of fitness and
military training. In modern times, gymnastics became an Olympic sport at the 1896 Games
in Athens.

Benefits of gymnastics
Muscle strength: Gaining Muscle strength through tumbling, jumping, static flexing, and
holding one's own body weight in various positions help develop strong and powerful
bodies. Over time, muscle strength builds in.
Flexibility: A by-product of gymnastics is flexibility (the ability to move the muscles
through their full range of motion). Because gymnasts aim to achieve a variety ofpositions to perform skills on each apparatus, Stretching and continuous body movements
over and again makes it easier to move and make the body more flexible. Flexibility is
also important for preventing injuries such as strains and muscle tear.
Bone health: The training involved in gymnastics promotes development of strong an
healthy bones. Since gymnastics is a weight bearing activity, it also helps in promotingincreased bone density. Along with bone density it also improves bone geometry and over
all bone health by reducing the risk of bone fracture later and the risk of developing
osteoporosis later in life.

Other Fitness benefits:
"Gymnastics is one of the best activities around for toning and conditioning the body
Gymnastics moves build flexibility, strength and give you more muscle mass. When there is
more muscle mass, the metabolism increases.
Additionally, flexibility helps lengthen the muscles and make the leg muscles look more
toned and shapely.
Gymnastics offer moderate calorie burning benefits and is often considered for weight
reduction program.

Gymnastics and children
Gymnastics is perhaps one of the most comprehensive "lifestyle exercise programs" available
to children, incorporating strength, flexibility, speed, balance, coordination, power and
discipline.
Along with the physical benefits like increased muscle strength, flexibility and bone health,
there are lot of other psycho-socio benefits for children.
Studies show that children learn cognitive skills more effectively in an environment thatincludes the body as well as the mind. Gymnastics and early childhood movement
education is directly attributed to developing neurological pathways in students and
promoting reading readiness, have longer attention spans, increased communication skills,
general problem solving skills and improved self-esteem.

Exercise recommendations
Gymnastics is considered moderately intense physical activity.
The American Heart Association recommends:
i. Children participate in 60 minutes of physical activity per day.
ii. Adults age 18 and over should participate in 30 minutes of exercise at least five days per
week.
iii. Activities should be moderately intense meaning exercise should cause the participant to
break a sweat and elevate their heart rate.
