What do we mean by ethics?

Ethics– Determine Right and Wrong – The Golden Rule – “Do unto others as you would have them do unto

you.”– The Ten Commandments - “ Honor thy Mother and Father”.

– *Norms of conduct that distinguish between acceptable and

unacceptable behavior

Let’s Consider:

-- Why we must follow ethical standards of conduct

-- Professionalism

Ethics and Integrity

Working definitions…

Ethical concepts deal with the norms of society and our ability to understand acceptable and unacceptable behavior. How does our society define right and wrong? (These are unwritten or written rules of moral behavior)

Integrity is a firm adherence to a code of ethics. It is doing the right thing.

“Ethics is a code that guides our choices and actions and determines the purpose and course of our lives.”

— Ayn Rand, Russian-American novelist and philosopher (1905-1982)

“Compassion is the basis of morality.”— Arthur Schopenhauer, German philosopher (1788-1860)

Ethics in EducationProfessional Conduct in Education• NEA Code of Ethics

Preamble:

• The National Education Association believes that the education profession consists of one education workforce serving the needs of all students and that the term ‘educator’ includes education support professionals.

• The educator, believing in the worth and dignity of each human being, recognizes the supreme importance of the pursuit of truth, devotion to excellence, and the nurture of the democratic principles.

• Essential to these goals is the protection of freedom to learn and to teach and the guarantee of equal educational opportunity for all. The educator accepts the responsibility to adhere to the highest ethical standards.

Thus, NEA sets rules and guidelines for professional behavior in our field.

The Unit 9 Discussion Board—

Imagine the following case scenario and then respond to the discussion:

You are paraprofessional working with a student with an emotional disability, and you work and live in the same community. While shopping with your children at a local grocery store, another parent recognizes you and wants to talk to you about a child in your class.

What do you do? Give specific examples of how you will follow professional, ethical, and legal standards.
