LESSON SURROUNDINGS.

Intervening Events. — The lamentationof the women of Jerusalem; the replyof Jesus; the arrival at Golgotha; therefusal of a stupefying draught; thecrucifixion, — Jesus between the »tworobbe*; the flrst word from the cross("Father, forgive them"), probably ut-tered as the end of the cross was ele-vatedr the placing of the title; the ob-jection of the 'Jews; the casting of lotsby the soldiers for the garments ofJesus, the reason of this being assign-ed by John (John 19: 23, 24).

Place.— Golgotha, Cranlon (Luke),means "skull," as does the Latin Cal-vary. The name was probably deriv-ed from the shape of the Itnoll. Thotraditional site (the Church of the HolySepulchre) can scarcely be tho trueone. Opinion now Inclines to tho knollnear the so-called Grotto of Jeremiahnortheast of the Damascus gate.

The nest, to build an iron bridgeto connect the two Central buildings,to serve as a fire escape from either, was the cause of long and earnest

-debate^-but-the^Board-were-author-ized to make the improvement, at acost not to exceed $300.

The third proposition was to builda school house near Thirteenth "St.and First Koad, to cost not over$1200. 'An explanation of the needfor this additional accommodationwas nui/TeT and the necessary author-ity giVeuibr its construction.

The Hoard virtually withdrew itsfourth proposition, — to furnish anadditional room in Central buildingfor the Primary Department, andthis was laid on the table.

The appropriations for maintainingthe schools came next. The Boardasked $3000 ' for teachers' salaries ;but as it ; bad been ^decided not toprovide an additional room, and theemployment of another teacher wouldnot bo 'necessary, they consented toa reduction of $360, and the meetingvoted $2040.

For repairs and refurnishing, theBoard asked $600, but voluntarilyreduced the amount to $400, whichwas voted.

For hooka and supplies, $500 wereappropriated.
