BASIC CHOICES TO BE MADE

Abasic choice to be made by allcitizens is to ensure being reg-istered to vote by May 24,

2010. The election on Tuesday, June 8th iscoming up very soon, so be certain to takethe time to review the official voter infor-mation pamphlet mailed by the Registrarof Voters. It is best to review the officialinformation presented on the Registrar ofVoter's web site: www.sccvote.org.

Recently, the California Secretary ofState's Office mailed out the 'CaliforniaStatewide Direct Primary Election, Tues-day, June 8, 2010 Pamphlet,’ which is theofficial voter information guide. Make achoice to read it because it does contain of-ficial information rather than the politicalrhetoric presented by candidates’ directmail pieces.

Everybody faces many basic choiceswhich need to be made. So many choicesthat it is easy to become unable to do any-thing. Especially when one doesn’t dosome prior preparation. An essentialchoice is to spend the time and effort to be-come acquainted with all election issues. It is very easy to decide nothing can bedone about the global economy andweather, the national debt, the need forWall Street financial reform, and a regu-lation system for all insurance firms. These are all very complicated big issueswhose costs eventually trickle down to theconsumer who pays. And there are moreissues such as home mortgage foreclo-sures, lack of credit for small businesses, the need to upgrade our infrastructures(roads, bridges, etc.), our drinking watersupply systems, the transition to alterna-tive energy, and comprehensive immigra-tion reform, etc.

So let's begin at the local level. Justknow that basic choices pertaining to allthese issues are being made by yourelected representatives

In the City of San Jose, for the firsttime ever, the Hispanic community hasfour Hispanic candidates vying to repre-sent District 5. They are J. Manuel Her-rera, Magdalena Carrasco, XavierCampos, and Aaron Resendez. In District7 candidate Rudy Rodriguez is trying tounseat Madison Nguyen, the incumbent.

In District 9 Donald Rocha is a candidate.Sam Liccardo (District 3) and Pete Con-stant (District 1) deserve re-election.

In the County of Santa Clara, Board ofSupervisors, District 1, Dr. Peter Arellano(Gilroy) and Teresa Alvarado are the His-panic candidates. Arellano has served as amember of the Gilroy City Council and isan expert in health care issues which is abody of knowledge needed by the Boardof Supervisors. Teresa Alvarado is thedaughter of former Supervisor Blanca Al-varado; former Executive Director of theHispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley andmarried to Jesse Morales.

Another county level election choiceto be made is whether to elect a Hispanic,Richard Calderon as Sheriff. The currentDistrict Attorney, Dolores Carr, a Latina,is being challenged by Deputy District At-torney Jeff Rosen.

At the State of California level, for As-sembly District 23, Nora Campos is a can-didate, who, if elected, will replace thecurrent incumbent, The Honorable JoeCoto. She is the sister of Xavier Campos,a candidate for the seat of District 5, Cityof San Jose. An unexpected candidate forAssembly District 23 is Patricia MartinezRoach, a teacher and ESUHSD boardmember.

A former local superintendent,Franklin McKinley School District, LarryAceves, is a candidate for State Superin-tendent of Public Instruction. He deservesyour support.

Abel Maldonado (R) is a candidate forLt. Governor and whose interim appoint-ment by Governor Schwarzenegger washeld up for weeks by the State Assembly.Of great interest to Hispanics is the contestfor Attorney General which has AlbertoTorrico and Rocky Delgadillo as candi-dates.

It would be best for the Hispanic citi-zen to actively participate by registering tovote (deadline: May 24th). That ensuresthat your cultural values will be at the tablewhen public policy is being debated andestablished. It also establishes you as aconstituent whose opinions will be heardby politicians who want to stay in office. Those are the basic choices to be made.

Ihave a reasonable suspicion that per Ari-zona's new SB 1070, police will unreason-ably suspect many Latinos living in

Arizona of being undocumented. I believe my sus-picion is reasonable because legally, to reasonablysuspect someone of being undocumented requiresarticulable facts that cannot be based upon color ofskin, race, ethnicity, or language spoken.

This leaves us primarily with dress code andmannerisms as the only articulable ways to identifya person's legal status in this country. When Ari-zona's police are trained (at taxpayers' expense) todetermine that a hat, a belt, shoes, the use of handsin speech, etc. amount to undocumented status, weare clearly going down a path that casts a wide netof cultural customs that will include many U.S. cit-

izens.

When I worked at Catholic Charities in theearly 1990s, indiscriminate Border Patrol sweepswere a common occurrence at Story and KingRoads. After a young legal male Mexican wearinga distinctive hat from the State of Michoacan wasunlawfully arrested in a sweep, I recommendedthat he carry a tennis racket to break the stereotype. It worked-he never had a problem with his civil lib-erties again.

Millions of persons of Latino descent in Ari-zona had better start carrying tennis rackets.

Unreasonable Suspicion in Arizona

When community members inSanta Clara think of Jim McEn-tee, they remember a kind,

warm-hearted, and caring individual, who'swork has and will continue to improve the livesof those living in Santa Clara County.

On Friday, May 7, county residents and of-ficials will pay tribute to McEntee by unveilingthe James P. McEntee Plaza at the Santa ClaraCounty Government Center.

"Jim was a wonderful person who workedhard to bring people together to solve issuespeacefully," said McEntee's wife Ann. "Heloved everyone no matter who they were.Everyone was important to him."

McEntee served as Director of Human Re-lations for the County of Santa Clara for over27 years. He also started food banks andworked with various religious and ethic groupsthroughout the county.

"He stood for peacemaking, nonviolenceand social justice, respect for diversity and allcultures, and civil and human rights for all,"said Andrea Villasenor-Perry, Vice Chair of theJim McEntee Legacy Committee. "He was aman of deep religious faith, a servant leader, passionate in his love for his family and com-munity."

Prior to working with Santa Clara County,McEntee was a priest serving migrant farm-workers in Morgan Hill, working closely withCesar Chávez and the UFW.

"I believe his dedication to peace and social

justice came from his deep faith in God and hisdesire to live out gospel values. His life's workwas so much more than a profession/ career - itwas a ministry," Perry said. "He understood hisrelative position of privilege in society andknew that he was called to stand courageouslyas an ally, by the side of those with less powerand privilege. He understood the evils ofracism, classicism, homophobia, etc. and hepreached a gospel of inclusion, unity, and re-spect for all, even and most importantly in thecourse of diametrically opposed communityopinions and viewpoints."

The plaza dedicated to McEntee is a re-minder of all the hard work that he did for thecommunity and a reminder that the communityas a whole must continue to work hard to bringjustice to all.

"We desperately need reminders, especiallyhere in Silicon Valley, of what is most importantin life - not status, wealth, power, consuming -but, love for family, love and service to others, fighting for peace and justice for all. Especiallyat this time of economic and political recession,we need to celebrate what represents the best ofwhat we can be as human beings," Perry said.

The Jim McEntee Legacy Committee alsooffers scholarships to community college stu-dents who have been accepted to four-year col-leges.

"The students selected have all had to overcome difficult situations in order to make theirlives better," Ann McEntee said.

Over 200 people showed up in an ef-fort to prevent the WashingtonUnited Youth Center from perma-

nently closing its doors. The center was originally scheduled to close

on June 30, but with summer around the corner

the center was granted two more months, movingthe closing date to August 31.

"I can now say that thanks to the WashingtonUnited Youth Center, I have a scholarship to goto UCLA,” said Vanessa Romo. “A big part ofmy success was due to them."

Romo has been going to the center since age13 and is now 17 and is very grateful for the cen-

ter. She hopes that her sisters can be able to takeadvantage of the same opportunities.

People go to the center for different reasons, but the main reason why people are fighting forthe center is because it saves the lives of manyteenagers that otherwise would be running offand getting in trouble.

"Everybody is safe here, in the good timesand bad there's always somebody to talk with andtrust," said Aaron Carrera. Carrera has beengoing to the center for seven years and sees allthe benefits the different programs provide. Heknows the importance of having the centeraround for youth in his shoes.

It takes $400,000 a year to run the center. The center has self-defense classes, it offers Eng-lish classes and it also has a computer center. It'snot just a place to play handball or pool, it's con-sidered a home to many people.

"I have received many trainings from whichI have benefited so much," said Ana Maria

Ramirez. Ramirez considers the center a home and re-

members when it started out as a single officeand how the area in general had the worst repu-tation in the neighborhood. She hopes that every-one comes together to fight to keep the centeropen.

In an effort to keep the center open, en-velopes were given to people who wanted tomake any donation. They want to show the citythat they don't want free services, they are willingto help in any way they can.

"I want to encourage everyone to come andparticipate," said Councilmember Sam Liccardo."We'd love to see you at city hall to demonstrateyour support for this community and its center."

There is a march being organized for May18. People will be meeting at 5:30pm at theWashington United Youth Center and will marchto City Hall and share personal stories. Everyoneis invited to take part of the protest.

It's been a week since Gov. Jan Brewerof Arizona signed the bill on illegal im-migration into law. And over the past

few days people have been protesting all overthe nation and in San Jose as well.

The Silicon Valley Alliance for Immigra-tion Reform and MAIZ organized a small vigilon Monday, April 26, over 150 people protestedon the corner of Story and King Road in eastside San Jose. The people are outraged aboutwhat's going on in Arizona and voiced solidar-ity with the people of Arizona.

"Immigrants are a vibrant force in our cul-ture, economy and society. They come here towork, to be reunited with family or to avoidpersecution. The recent passage of SB 1070 isout of tune with our American values. As Amer-icans, we believe in family, equality, the rightof allegiance to this great country, and prosper-ity through hard work. NOW is the time for theObama administration and Congress to step upto the plate and fix our broken immigration sys-tem in a thoughtful, well-reasoned and humanemanner. By stalling immigration reform we areundermining the fabric by which the UnitedStates was formed," states Patricia Diaz, Exec-utive Director of SIREN.

The law requires officials and agencies ofthe state and political subdivisions to fully com-ply with and assist in the enforcement of federalimmigration laws and gives county attorneyssubpoena power in certain investigations of em-ployers. It establishes crimes involving tres-passing by illegal aliens, stopping to hire orsoliciting work under specified circumstances, and transporting, harboring or concealing un-lawful aliens, and their respective penalties, asstated in the fact sheet provided by the Arizona

State Legislature. Opponents of the law have called it an open

invitation for harassment and discriminationagainst Latinos regardless of their citizenshipstatus. Not carrying the proper identification orrequired papers is now a crime and anyone sus-pected can be stopped.

The law will take effect in August, but be-fore that, demonstrators remind people to attendthe march on May 1. Everyone will meet atStory and King Roads in San Jose, and themarch will begin at 4pm.

On Wednesday, April 21, AngelaDavis spoke to a group of studentsand teachers at the Morris Dailey

Auditorium at San Jose State University whereshe discussed current events and her thoughtson them.

The theme of her discussion was the cre-ation of new terrain that has brought more free-dom and everything that follows.

"45 years ago people were convinced theywere going to witness a revolution in the U.S.,"said Angela Davis. "And that revolution didn'thappen. We're still fighting capitalism andracism."

She remembers having the urgency to or-ganize to overturn capitalism. She revealed howhard it was to organize nationwide, how expen-sive a call would be and now everything is eas-ier. She urged the students to use thoseinstruments to their advantage and continue or-ganizing.

"The issues remain, the challenges remain, and we have to continue to build the kinds ofmovements that will allow us to make someprogress, at least in the direction of educationalreform," said Davis.

The latest example of organized youth wasthe result of the latest presidential campaign.Davis believes that young adults made the dif-ference in Obama's victory. She noticed thatmany Latinos and Blacks weren't too optimistic

and that all changed once young adults em-braced Obama's message of hope.

The night also gave all the listeners a betterunderstanding of who Angela Davis is. Daviswas hired at UCLA to teach Marxism and didn'tthink that joining the communist party wouldcost her job. She was wrong. She currently livesin Oakland and continues to be a feminist andis an advocate for change.

"The most important civil rights movementtoday, is the movement to abolish all of the lawsthat proclaim people who simply want to havea better life, and they want to have a better lifelargely because their home countries have beendestroyed by transnational capitalist corpora-tions," said Davis. "So they're fleeing the ef-fects of global capitalism."

The new terrain has people struggling fortheir identity because of gender roles. Peopleare struggling to live in a place where they arenot welcomed, but are willing to risk it all. Thenew terrain is filled with homophobia and theenvironment also needs attention.

There is more freedom now, but manyproblems as well. Davis asked her listeners tocontinue to organize, to use those social net-works her generation didn't have and to organ-ize even more effectively.

Davis also believes that young people aremuch more willing to understand the connec-tions between ideas and that's key to a success-ful revolution.

A New Terrain on Which to Struggle

or No smoking”? y yo le dije, no, no traigo traje”, dice Carlos Mesa.

Healthincentives to lure kids to meals that are high in fat, sugar and calories.

Restaurants encourage children to choose spe-cific menu items by linking them with free toysand other incentive items, and research shows thatparents frequently make purchases based on re-quests made by children. In 2006, the FederalTrade Commission estimated that restaurants sold1.2 billion meals accompanied by toysto children under 12. While there arecurrently no nutritional standards formeals marketed to children, a2008 study by the Center forScience in the Public Interestfound that 10 out of 12meals exceeding the rec-ommended caloric limitsfor children came with toys.

"This ordinance levelsthe playing field," said Yea-ger. "It helps parents makethe choices they want fortheir children without toysand other freebies luringthem toward food that fails tomeet basic nutritional standards."

One in four youth in Santa Clara county areeither overweight or obese, and one in three low-income children in Santa Clara County betweenages two and five are overweight or obese. Na-tionally, childhood obesity has tripled since the1970s. Obesity is a risk factor for cardiovasculardisease, diabetes and cancer. Thirty percent ofboys and 40% of girls born in 2000 will be diag-

nosed with Type 2 diabetes, which can result in theloss of, on average, 10-15 years of life.

The ordinance imposes very specific, com-mon-sense restrictions. Restaurants cannot usetoys as rewards for buying foods that have exces-sive calories (more than 120 for a beverage, 200for a single food item or 485 for a meal), excessivesodium (480 mg for a single food item or 600 mg

for a meal), excessive fat (more than 35%of total calories from fat), or excessive

sugar (more than 10% of caloriesfrom added sweeteners.) The cri-teria are based on nationally rec-

ognized standards forchildren's health created by theDepartment of Health andHuman Services (DHHS) andthe Department of Agriculture(USDA) and recommenda-tions for children's food pub-lished by the Institute ofMedicine (IOM).

The ordinance affects allrestaurants in the unincorpo-

rated areas of Santa Clara County. Before going into effect, the ordinance

requires a second reading that will happen at theMay 11 Board of Supervisor's meeting. Restau-rants will then be granted a 90-day grace period.During that time, restaurants will be given the op-portunity offer alternative measures to meet thegoals of the ordinance. If no suitable alternative iscreated and adopted by the Board of Supervisors, the ordinance will go into effect.

featuring artists that workwith clay was fantastic, particu-larly because among the artistsparticipating I can name friends, colleagues, and professors I stud-ied with as an undergrad at SanJose State University.

EO: What inspires you to doart?

Scharaga: The themes I use inmy work are based on my ques-tions, insights, doubts, hopes, frus-trations, worries, and conclusionsabout the world around me. I havealways been fascinated by the con-nections between social and cul-tural phenomena and personalpsychological experience. Humanstories inspire me, fill me with ad-

miration, and also terrify me. Mywork is at times painful, at timesjoyful, and always viscerally at-tached to the realities of contem-porary life, mine, and the peoplewho share this planet with me.

When creating a new pieceI'm hoping to be able to establisha connection with the viewerthrough our common humanity.Events and situations of our dailylife can sometimes trigger power-ful emotions difficult to articulate. In my work I aim to express the in-effable, and to find visual means tocommunicate concepts, feelings, and experiences that are verballyelusive. I consider myself a wit-ness and recorder of my time andexperiences, both at the personaland societal levels.

EO: Where else can peoplefind your art work?

Scharaga: My website: tbsart-studio.com and my Facebookpage: Tessie Barrera-Scharaga ArtStudio.

EO: How long does a ce-ramic project usually take andhow do you plan it?

Scharaga: An installation can

take from a few weeks to a fewmonths to complete. It depends onthe complexity of the piece. It maystart with an image in my head thatI need to see realized, or a piece ofnews that caught my attention, orsome situation I've experienced orwitnessed, or a passage from abook or article I've read. Mostpieces require a combination of

media and technology that may in-clude clay, wood, fabric, photog-raphy, video, and sound. I createmy own ceramic objects, videofootage, and soundtracks.

EO: What's next for you?More art exhibits?

Scharaga: As long as I cancontinue making art, I'm satisfied,

and hopefully, there will always bemore opportunities to exhibit mywork.
