Enzymes in Real Life

“Cat”alyze = action of an

enzyme

Page 3: enzymes

Enzymes are proteins that lower the amount

of activation energy

Page 4: enzymes

Activation Energy=energy needed to start a chemical

reactionBlue Line=NO ENZYME

Red Line= ENZYME

Page 5: enzymes

Active Site Folds in an enzyme where

the substrate fitsSubstrate

Molecule that uses an enzyme

Page 6: enzymes

An enzyme does one of two things:

1. Breaks the substrate apart (releasing energy)

2. Puts two substrates together (absorbing energy)

Cells contain thousands of different kinds of enzymes.

Not all cells contain the same enzymes.

Chemical Reactions

The breaking down or building up of

substancesExample of a chemical reaction

Reactant(s) Peroxidase Product(s)

H2O2 H20 + O2

(hydrogen peroxide) (Water, Oxygen gas)

Reactants react, products are produced

The arrow is like an equals signPeroxidase is the ENZYME

3 Things can affect how enzymes work.

1.TemperatureBiology.com 5.5 page 2

2. pH (acidic or basic)

3. Concentration (how many enzymes are working

ex. Cubed vs. Ground up Liver)

Denature Enzymes don’t “die”, they just become unusable

How Beano Works: Complex indigestible sugars found in many plant products such as beans, cabbage, broccoli, onions, soy products, and others can ferment in your digestive system releasing gas in the form of flatulence. The enzyme in Bean-zyme breaks these sugars down into less complex sugars that the human body can digest, thus reducing or eliminating the intestinal gas formed. The enzyme is made from a safe food grade mold.
