‘Achievement has risen dramatically’ – Ofsted 2015 1

Spring Term April 2016

The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day this year was ‘Don’t stand by’ and Year 7 students crafted some incredible pieces of work in remembrance of the Holocaust as part of a homework project.

Some of them made superb models, like the ones shown here, and others wrote poems or drew pictures. Year 9 students also enjoyed a

visit to HOME in Manchester to watch some short films about the

Holocaust. They found them extremely moving and it really

inspired them to learn more about the tragic events that happened.

MEA’s Sixth Form Common Room is the envy of the school after undergoing an incredible transformation. The design and redecoration work was funded through the John Lewis ‘Community Matters’ charitable giving scheme and the furniture was very kindly donated by Halo through their charitable work with John Lewis.Sixth Form student, Jordan, commented, “It’s so lovely now and feels really welcoming. Shake up your wake up

From granola and yoghurt, to a variety of breads and fresh fruits, there was something for everyone to try during National Breakfast Week at MEA’s FREE breakfast club. Some of the students even ‘pimped their porridge’ with different toppings. A big thank you also to Duerrs for donating a variety of jams.

Congratulations to Teri in Year 7 who beat hundreds of other students to be crowned winner of the ‘Breakfast like a King’ smoothie competition run by Joe’s Kitchen & Coffee House at Manchester Airport. Her creation has now been added to the menu.

UK Maths ChallengeEvery year, schools across the country can enter their students for the UK Maths Challenge. Last year a group of Year 7 and 8 students took part in the Junior Maths Challenge answering 25 (very challenging!) multiple choice questions. Six of them qualified for a Bronze or Silver award which was a great success! This year MEA also entered some of the Year 10 and 11 students (pictured here) for the Intermediate Maths Challenge and 10 have qualified for an award. Seven achieved a Bronze, two achieved a Silver and one achieved a Gold. Fantastic stuff!

Cool Fuel 2 comes to townMEA’s ‘Cool Fuel’ initiative in conjunction with children’s illustrator, Gabrielle Dow, has been hugely popular with children in our local primary schools. As part of Cool Fuel 2 ‘Secret Agent Hamster’ has now been helping children crack the codes on food labelling as part of his mission to uncover ‘sneaky sugars’. Here he is with some of his new friends at Ringway Primary School.

And now the boys! The Female Entrepreneurs Programme, which was set up by MEA and Lloyds Banking Group around 18 months ago, has been a huge success with students describing this unique mentoring programme as ‘life-changing’ or ‘the best opportunity I have ever had’. The mentors from Lloyds are also finding it incredibly rewarding. There are currently 60 female students on the FEP and 30 female Lloyds mentors. However, on both sites, the Lloyds and MEA boys have been asking when it will be their turn. So what happened next? Well, we have just held our first introductory meeting with 20 new male Lloyds staff who will be mentoring our MEA boys. We are eternally grateful to Lloyds for their unending support, it is making such a huge difference.

Our kind of World Book Day!

Principal’s message: Fantastic Future coming soon!So much is going on at MEA every week that it is sometimes hard to digest all the wonderful opportunities available to our students. One of my key roles though is to try and look to the future and make sure that MEA continues to thrive and offer a world class education to our students. Much is changing in secondary education and it is vital that we adapt and remain agile so our students are always able to achieve amazing things. This year nearly 50 local children did not secure a place at MEA, despite putting us down as their first choice preference. We have expanded our intake to 210 students for September 2016 but need to grow further to make sure we can accommodate all the children who want to join us.

I am very excited to announce that in the summer we will start building a new extension on our campus. This new building will offer fantastic new facilities for Performing Arts, Science and English and will be called ‘The Durie Building’ after one of our Governors, Peter Durie, who was one of the most important leaders in making sure

MEA was built and offered excellent education. ‘The Durie Building’ will start to be built this summer and be open for September 2017 – allowing us to take 240 children every year. Alongside the new building we are planning to redevelop our sports facilities even further, so that our students get access to fantastic facilities across the curriculum. We are so proud that so many local children want to join the MEA family and are determined to provide a world class school for these children.

MEA is also honoured to have been chosen to open a new school in Manchester where our students will get further opportunities for student leadership and partnership.

On the wall in my office I have a sign that says ‘Yesterday’s home run doesn’t win tomorrow’s game’. We will not get complacent, we are determined to continue to offer a fantastic education to all our students.

Getting Fit Our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award programme is making great strides with students currently taking part in fitness sessions to achieve the 12 hours ‘Physical’ attribute of the award. Students also have to successfully complete 12 hours of ‘volunteering’ and 12 hours dedicated to a ‘skill’. All

need to be completed over a period of no less than 3 months. We are aiming to complete the final expedition in July once two of the other attributes have been completed.

Thank you so much to Lloyds Banking Group for supporting us with helping to raise funds, the expedition, volunteering and offering to teach new skills.

It was our usual mad, eccentric but wonderful celebration for World Book Day again this year. As is our tradition, all the staff are in costume and provide great entertainment for the students! Miss Bamber, the Drama teacher, was even ‘in character’ for most of it asking for us to speak to her agent about photographic rights! All the lessons were themed around World Book Day with a fancy dress competition, quiz, illustrations of Gangsta Granny, designing book tokens, writing a Spanish version of Mr MEA (like Mr Men) and Dropping Everything and Reading (DEAR) at intervals throughout the day. The atmosphere was brilliant and the students were over the moon to be given a book as a gift. Huge thanks to our disturbingly scary ‘Woman in Black’, aka Miss Smith, for organising such a fantastic day!

MEA’s Principal, James Eldon.

Song interpretationsWell done to all our Year 8s who produced some outstanding song interpretations in their art lessons. Here is just one great example by Maisie.

More Awards! We are delighted to announce that MEA has received the Discovering Democracy Award for investing in democracy at MEA and helping develop youth participation in society and also a Silver Award from the Teacher Development Trust Network for the quality and culture of professional development at MEA.

Giant Tetrahedron & Disaster ChallengeYear 8s demonstrated great teamwork when they built a giant tetrahedron from 64 individual

ones and also built shelters, bridges and vehicles for a disaster challenge. Thank you to the Royal Institute of Great Britain for funding this Maths enrichment day.

Gurdwara Visit Year 9s had a great time learning about

the Sikh tradition of ‘langar’ where food is served to visitors in their place of worship known as a Gurdwara. The hospitality shown was tremendous.

LGBT Ambassadors. We consider ourselves as a family at MEA, we support each

other and do not discriminate. During LGBT History Month there were some excellent discussions about this and all our students

signed a pledge to support the ‘educating out’ of prejudice.

Mosaic Enterprise ChallengeYear 8 students worked hard to achieve the highest net profit in this online Enterprise Challenge. Working in small groups

with mentors from the university the students had to complete 6 modules – market research and product choice, sales channels, preparing, beginning and completing trading.

Ferry ‘cross the MerseyYear 11 students enjoyed their ‘Pastoral Pledges’ trip to Liverpool taking in the

sights on a boat trip and having a great time at the Liverpool Museum.

Eagle-eyed studentsYear 10 students experienced a wonderful ‘Pastoral Pledges’ trip to Chester Cathedral

and a Birds of Prey centre where they had the opportunity to see and touch

a number of different birds.

Meeting the authorThirty Year 8 students met Alan Gibbons,

the author of the book ‘Hate’ at Manchester Central Library recently. They got chance to

pick the author’s brains on writing, being creative and avoiding the blank page!

Literacy LeadersA group of Year 7 students have been trained as ‘Literacy Leaders’ and are

demonstrating a very mature and professional approach as they mark their colleagues English and maths books for presentation, spelling of key words and effort.

Congratulations to Year 7 students who are working really hard and gaining lots of reward points – so many Bronze, Silver and even Gold Reward Certificates have already been presented this term.

Aye aye Captain!MEA Students had a great trip to the Regional Skills Event at Event City where

they were able to get ideas and information about future career pathways.

Birdboxes from palletsYear 9 students have made some lovely, rustic birdboxes from old wooden pallets.

Some are using them as gifts for family and friends and some have decided to put them up within our grounds to encourage more birds to visit us.

Fruit spaghetti – really?STEM club is still attracting great crowds with its fantastic range of activities. Who

ever knew you could make spaghetti from liquid fruit or even soup – yet another example of molecular gastronomy!

A Taste of SpainYear 8 Spanish students had a great time

tasting ‘something different’ recently – from Spanish favourites such as olives, manchego

cheese and Spanish omelette to serrano ham, chorizo and other meats and herbs.

Just because!Year 11 BTEC drama students

smashed their performing arts practical assessment. The theme ‘Just Because’ explored the themes of young people, stereotypes and perceptions in society.

Wythenshawe Women Can.. and that includes our female students from Years 8 & 9 who enjoyed lots

of activities, listened to talks from inspiring women and learnt about healthy lifestyles at this amazing event at the Forum as part of International Women’s Day

celebrations. Our Year 10 girls also enjoyed networking and speaking to successful business women at a workshop at William Hulme Grammar School.

Valuable experiencesSixth Form students, who are taking accredited Business Enterprise courses with Manchester United Foundation in addition to their main course of study, have also been volunteering at Ashgate Specialist Support Primary School for a 6 week period each Wednesday.

The same students chose a Dementia charity as the beneficiary of their ‘Business Enterprise-related’ project work. So far they have raised £100 from a Tea & Cake Sale.

Manchester Histories CommendationSixth Formers, Ben, Hayley & Bradley (pictured here) were delighted to collect their Commendation at the Manchester Histories Awards for having taken part in the WOW Zone’s ‘Wonders of Wythenshawe’ heritage project. If you didn’t get chance to see this amazing project you can download the free ‘Wonders of Wythenshawe’ app to your device.

Mentoring via BW3All Sixth Form students at MEA who have requested a mentor have now been matched with one. Pictured here are the final group of Mentors who have very kindly volunteered to support our students. The results we are seeing already from the mentoring process has been incredible. Students have commented how they have felt far more confident, particularly with job or university applications, CV writing and interview techniques. Some have also benefitted greatly from the network of contacts their mentor has been able to introduce, even if it is just to secure a work experience placement. Thank you so much to all our wonderful mentors and to BW3 for recruiting, training and supporting the mentors.

‘Effectiveness of 6th form provision is good’ – Ofsted 2015

A special occasionIn February MEA students who had demonstrated academic success, good attendance and good behaviour were rewarded with an opportunity to attend the Europa game v FC Midtjylland at Old Trafford. The Foundation kindly donated 50 seats for the game and MEA provided the coach. It was fantastic for the students to see local Wythenshawe lad, Marcus Rashford, score two goals on his MUFC debut.

A great time was had by all, particularly those who had never been to Old Trafford before.

Come on you girls! Girls’ football is booming at MEA every Wednesday, and numbers are also increasing at the Foundation’s Street Reds sessions on Monday and Friday evenings.

Big thanks have to go to Foundation coach and former MEA student, Lily Cullen, who provides endless support and encouragement, including at tournaments and fixtures. The girls are now getting some great playing experience and congratulations go to Cody (pictured above) for being voted one of four ‘Players of the Competition’ at a recent Hub tournament. For more information about girls football please contact Nick Bradshaw or Lily Cullen.

Charlotte’s Youth Exchange in IsraelMEA Sixth Former, Charlotte (far left in photo), recently had the opportunity of a lifetime when she represented Manchester United Foundation and MEA on a Youth Exchange trip to Tel Aviv through the European Football for Development Network, a network for professional clubs and their associated National Government Organisations, who use football as a tool for social development programmes. Three weeks prior to Charlotte’s trip, Hub coach, Nick, had also visited Tel Aviv as part of a forum for coaches around disability in football. Nick was able to highlight some of the great work carried out by the Foundation and MEA students at schools in the community such as Ashgate Specialist Support Primary School.

When it was Charlotte’s turn to go to Israel she met lots of other young people from different European cities and they worked together through an action-packed week of activities also based around disability in sport. What an experience!

Volunteering at BW3At a recent BW3 business networking event three of our Sixth Formers did a great job of meeting and greeting the visitors and generally supporting the running of the event on the night. They also made some excellent contacts and learnt more about the work of BW3 who are a local business networking organisation.

Stepping into Business MEA Sixth Formers are getting the opportunity to find their inner entrepreneur through a joint project with Manchester social enterprise, Stepping into Business, and Sugarman Education. The ‘Enterprise Essential’ workshops are being sponsored by Managing Director of Sugarman Education, Eddie Austin, who is originally from Wythenshawe and who wanted to support young adults in fulfilling their aspirations.

The programme provides hands-on fun, practical experience of problem solving, presentation skills and being creative, all vital skills for running a business.

RAF Careers As part of ongoing careers support and advice for Sixth Formers the Royal Air Force recently came in to talk about the vast range of opportunities available within the RAF. It was a real eye-opener for quite a few of the students as there were many roles which they would never have associated with the Air Force. The presenter also explained about the recruitment process and the personal skills and character needed to get through.

Half assist in the classroom and half in the delivery of sport with Nick Bradshaw from Manchester United Foundation. Nick commented, ‘The group is amazing and their confidence is increasing all the time’. Thank you also to Miss Brown who has been a great support with these sessions and with activities such as the Tea & Cake sale shown below.

In our last edition we introduced MEA Year 9 student, Lewis, who went through a selection process at the start of the year to become a Manchester United Ball Assistant. Here he is at a recent game (bottom right corner) as a flag bearer. Great pic Lewis!!

A taste of Yoga

Year 10 and 11 girls have recently been introduced to the wonderful world of Yoga and are discovering the many benefits it can bring – improving flexibility, building muscle strength, perfecting posture and many more.

Rugby is being embraced in Wythenshawe since the launch of Wythenshawe RUFC and the appointment of head rugby union coach, ex Sedgeley Tigers professional, Sam Simpson (pictured far left). History was made when the first ever formal rugby match was played against East Manchester at MEA’s grounds at the end of last year. There are now over 80 players registered with teams at five different age groups: U12, U14 and U16 Boys, U13 Girls and a Men’s team.

CBRE mentoring for Year 7s Mentors from CBRE are working with a group of Year 7 students to demonstrate how maths, literacy and life skills are hugely important for the future: in the workplace and in day to day life. The first session involved students being tasked with building structures from newspapers. They also came up with a set of values to always keep in mind. The key values came under the headings - Respect, Attitude & Contribution.

Tournament winners

Year 10 MEA boys were crowned the Manchester United Foundation Hub Tournament Winners in February. The tournament included all the partnerFoundation schools and was played at BroadoakHigh School in Partington. The boys played brilliantly and the final against The Albion Academy couldn’t have been more dramatic when it went to penalties. Well done lads!

Keep it up boysThe Year 10 football team has been producing footballing masterclasses recently with two further wins in early March – 2-0 against Cedar Mount and 3-2 against Burnage High. They are currently joint top of the league with East Manchester Academy with 2 games remaining. Keep up the great work boys!

Parent, Darren Thomasson (far right) was so enthusiastic about the introduction of local rugby that he has undertaken training and now has a rugby coaching qualification. He is also now Chairman of Wythenshawe RUFC.

MEA RugbyAs club rugby is launched in the local area by Wythenshawe RUFC it is also gaining great momentum at MEA. Pictured here is the MEA team in blue in a recent tournament. It has been particularly great to see players in the squad who have never played for any sports team before, even at primary school. Rugby is certainly breaking barriers for many of our students and their confidence is definitely growing.

A first for Wythenshawe Rugby

Training takes place every Thursday at MEA for the Boys, every Monday at St Paul’s RC High School for the Girls and every Tuesday for the Men’s team at MEA. Training will carry on throughout the year and the club will offer rugby camps during school holidays. Prospective players and parents are encouraged to contact Sam on 07546 216136 or by email to [email protected], for further information. You can also find out more on Facebook at Wythenshawe Community Rugby Union Club.
