February, the month of love and my personal favourite month of the year. Summer sun and romance, who could ask for a more perfect combination? Also it is my birth month, so perhaps I am a teensy bit biased.

Valentines Day is perhaps the only day of the year that people make a truely magnifi cent effort to express their love to that special someone, but it is becoming more common to try and express that love every day. The mantra ‘live every day like it is your last’ is becoming more widely practiced, with gestures of love becoming more regular, making grand gestures more common practice on the special day of love.

Contrary to belief Valentines day is not a day meant solely for youngsters. Crossing the forty’s should be no reason that you restrain from celebrating the lovers day. In fact after all those years there is an urgency to keep the romance alive in your life. Just remember on this day that your valentine has been your great friend, your soul mate, your supporter in all odd times.

A bit mushy perhaps, but hey, we all love a little love, and I do hope you receive some tenderness this Valentines Day.

This month’s edition tells the ever lasting love story of Pauline and Les Cornwall, a passion that has burned for more than 66 years.

Our epic 6 month weight loss challenge has begun! *gulp! This month meet our 12 brave contestants as they partake in a life changing experience.

The Mid-Canterbury Wine and Food Trail has tantalised our taste buds with four delicious recipes, and don’t miss our latest Barkers giveaway!

I do hope you enjoy February’s edition of Envy, and if you see any of our weight loss contestants, be sure to give them some encouragement and inspiration to help them achieve success.

Stay gorgeous,Amanda and the team at EnvyXOX

Welcome to February

Envy, February, Issue 29 3

The Ashburton Guardian Weight Loss and Fitness Challenge is now underway, with 12 contestants, including myself, undertaking a 6 month commitment to shed unwanted kilos, and create healthier bodies for life.

On Friday 28th January, the 12 of us met for the first time and bonded over our common goal. We all come from different walks of life, mums, a policeman, a volunteer firefighter, office workers and a teacher, but we all share the same desire – to be smaller, fitter and healthier.

As a nervous yet excited group, our first journey was in to Curves. We were given a great run down and demonstration on how Curves can help us achieve a better level of fitness with their circuit work out and nutrition plan. We were able to experience the hydraulic exercise machines first hand, and we were told about their exciting new Zumba circuit, combining the fun of Zumba with the benefit of their machines.

Next we were over the road to Baring Square where Guardian photographer Carmen Rooney snapped some group shots for the front page of Saturday’s Ashburton Guardian newspaper. We knew at this point that there was no turning back, we were in the eye of the public now!

Excitedly we strolled to the Gym Company to meet our fitness advisor Frank Connely, and Nutrition advisor Sally Rossiter. Frank and Sally have given their time and expertise to all of us on a weekly basis, for

which we are all extremely grateful. Frank gave us individual exercise advice based on our circumstances, while Sally had developed an individual nutrition plan for each of us, based on our individual medical requirements. Sally then spoke to us as a group about the theory behind her program, explaining to us the importance of full and complete nutrition to keep our fires burning hot.

Carmen snapped some fun photos of us in the gym, and then we were released back into the world, excited and armed with the knowledge and enthusiasm to guide us through our first week.

This week we say ‘goodbye’ to that number on the scales forever, and ‘hello’ to a brand new beginning. We can’t change our past, but we can certainly shape our future.

Over the next 6 months we will be reporting our progress, including struggles, successes and feelings, each month within Envy. Our readers will keep us motivated, as we are all now accountable to you! So if you see one of us power walking down the street or pumping weights in the gym, feel free to stop and wish us luck and encouragement. As well as announcing a ‘grand winner’, we will also have a ‘peoples choice’ award, so be sure to follow our progress over the next 6 months so you can vote for your favourite!

This month we unveil our 12 contestants. Take a close look Mid-Canterbury, as shortly you will be seeing a whole lot less of us!

The challenge is underway!Story: Amanda Niblett

2011 Weight loss challenge

Introducing our contestants!

Hi my Name is Barbara. I’m a born and bred Southlander (don’t hold that against me)! I moved up to Ashburton three and a half years ago for love after meeting my now husband Brad Rodgers. I’m a mother of

4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls. Dom is my oldest and she is 14yrs, at her second year

of college and special needs. Charli is 10 and is year 5 at Borough. Then we have my 2 boys Noah who is two and a half, and Casey who is 11 months. I work part time and am involved with the parents centre. With having 3 pregnancies in 3 years and experiencing a miscarriage, this did not help the struggle that I already had with Post Natal Depression, that I had developed since Dom was born. The depression only got worse when Noah was born, but is slowly improving. Now I’ve come to a point in my life

where I am at my HEAVIEST, that I need to put my past struggles of losing weight behind me and do something about it. I thought the Envy challenge might be it. With the motivation of my kids and husband and the health benefits (mentally and physically) that I hope to achieve. I hope to lose weight, but also feel good about myself, make the most of my life and have fun with my kids. Having always struggled with my weight even as a kid this is the time in my life I need to make a change!!!!

Right, this year is crunch time. I say this every year, but it’s not every year that you turn 30, and that time is only 2 weeks away for me now.

The startling realization hit me, if I continue to over indulge and abuse my inner body, then I probably won’t live much past 60…which all of a sudden thrusts me to my halfway point in life. Aren’t I too young to start going through a mid-life

crisis? I’ve only recently met the love of my life, and if I plan to live a long and glorious life with my soul mate, then I need to start making some severe lifestyle

changes to become the person that I feel like I am within.I have struggled with weight for as long as I can

remember. I grew up in a small town called Renwick, in Marlborough, and went to Marlborough Girls College. At primary school, I was always one of the chubbier kids, but I certainly packed some power behind that weight. I was strong, fast and very active, playing almost every sport I could manage to fit into my week.

I held South Island records and national titles in Athletics, I played representative Cricket and Indoor Cricket including a match against Argentina, I played top level Table Tennis including some international matches, and played A-grade netball, basketball, soccer and rugby.

When I was 16 I had to have an operation on my back that had been damaged from compaction through playing a lot of sport and sustaining injuries. This shattered my

sporting expectations at a tender age and I was forced to sit on the bench for 6 months. During this time, boys and education took up all of my time, and as I become less active, the weight started piling on quickly.

From a young age I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovaries. Many women can relate to this condition. It creates issues with insulin, making weight loss challenging. More troubling is that it causes difficulties with conception, and to be accepted for IVF you need to be under a certain weight. Now my mission isn’t just about me, it’s about my future family.

I have organised this challenge with my colleagues at the Ashburton Guardian, in the hope that I can help a lot of people like me feel more positive with themselves, and find success in creating a healthier lifestyle for their futures.

Hi, my name is Adelle! When I was born I was a very small baby and my family always said “once she started gaining weight as a baby she never looked

back!” I successfully lost weight in my 20s following

Weight Watchers and Sure slim, but when I stopped my membership to “go it alone” I put the weight back on.

I used to be a “mindless” eater and never realised I had just eaten something until AFTER I had eaten it. That has changed now, as I have been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease, which is an intolerance to Gluten (wheat), I now

have to check everything I eat, one bonus from this is that I can no longer eat fast foods! I have made a full lifestyle change following my diagnosis, and now that I understand what I can (and can’t!) eat I am ready to eat to lose weight.

2011 Weight loss challenge

My name is Jo Wickett, I am 57 years old, married to Gavin, have 4 children (by my first marriage), 5 grandchildren and 2 step children.

I love gardening, which is my main job and gives me great satisfaction.

I am a cheerful, positive person and tend to give, to the detriment of my health and fitness.

I was told I have high blood pressure about 3 years ago and am on tablets. I don’t like it and want to give them up.

I have tried losing weight since having my children. Each pregnancy I seemed to gain more weight. At one stage I was about 120 kg and very unhappy. I have tried Weight Watches several times over the years and tried a variety of diets. I tried the Gym too. I struggle with 4 p.m. munchies, or when I am stressed and tired, and what about fish and chips?

My Dad died at 45 of a heart attack and I know what he has missed out on. I don’t want to. I want

to show my children that I can lose weight and get fitter and so can they. Our quality of life will be so much better.

I have recently started at Curves and have managed to lose 10 kg last year. I would love to lose another 10 kg and why not by doing this challenge to help me keep focused. I don’t know how it will be with the publicity side of it, but if I put myself out there what can I lose....... maybe 10 kg!

Hi, my name is Angela Ross, I am 31 and I am ready for a change!! All my life I have been overweight and have struggled with this. After finally losing a lot of weight in my early twenties, I managed to gain it all back and more with children, PND, a sedentary lifestyle, emotional eating, boredom grazing...

and all the other excuses I can muster up! That has brought me to here. Reading ENVY was like the wake up call I needed. I mean a New Years resolution to lose weight is forgotten by the end of the first week of January isn’t it??!! I want to lose this weight so that I can enjoy my family, so that I have energy to do

anything and everything, and also so that I can avoid all those weight associated health problems - most of these which run in my family. I am really looking forward to this challenge and already the team and our leaders have taught me so much. Good luck to all the contestants - may the biggest loser win... but in the end we all win!!

Angela Ross

Rebecca MillerMy name is Rebecca, wife of my dairy farmer

hubby Brent and mummy of three amazing children (6yr, 3yrs and 9mths). I have battled with my weight for most of my life which started when I was at school. Constantly teased.

I remember going home crying to my parents and telling them, and they would say “sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me” – well it does hurt and

now that I’m an overweight adult, those feelings are still unforgotten. I did lose a lot of weight and was at a normal weight range for many years – until pregnancy. Every pregnancy I seemed to gain more weight and just when I started to get normal again – I was pregnant! With our last child though, my blood pressure and cholesterol was very high and she came 8 weeks early. Since then I have battled internally with having a new baby, shifting, to a new community, new school for our eldest and

supporting my husband run the farm, and felt overwhelmed - weight loss didn’t seem to fit in anywhere.

That’s going to change now and I’m going to do it with this competition. Now is the time for ME - to lose weight, be healthy and feel great. I am blessed to be chosen for this competition and am going to work hard over the next six months to achieve my goals. Watch out Ashburton, you’re going to see a whole lot less of me!

2011 Weight loss challenge

Hi, I’m Rob Stevenson; I moved to Ashburton a little over four years ago having seen the opportunities available in this growing region. I operate a small local Human Resources business, my wife Lynda is a Chartered Accountant and our two wonderful children Joel and Danielle attend Borough School.

I have entered the Weight Loss Challenge partly at the suggestion of the lovely Lynda, but mostly because I have intended to lose weight for some time but have not found

the resolve to actually do it. I suspect my situation would be similar to many men, I have maintained my current weight (or there-about) for years but the muscle has turned to fat. My self-perception has gone from solidly built to obese.

As a younger guy I was a solid 90-92 kg, I worked hard and was fairly fit. Around 16 years ago I undertook six months of intensive physical (and academic) training, gaining an extra 15+kg of muscle, since then however all the muscle has turned to fat. I no longer physically work hard and

the ugly truth is that I am at least 25kg over weight. We are all aware of the consequences if we fail

to do well in this very public challenge. I am determined to succeed in losing a significant portion of weight and in so doing limit my public humiliation to the publishing of unflattering photos and this profile.

I also extend by sincere best wishes to the other challenge participants and look forward to getting to know them a little better over the coming months.

Heath HeavenMy name is Heath Heaven. I am 42 years old and

live with my wife and three children at Mt Somers. I used to work full time as a farm worker up until three years ago, when I became a stay at home dad. Since staying at home, I do less physical work and have struggled with my weight.

My turning point came just before Christmas, at a scrub fire, on the river bank. As a Volunteer

fire fighter, for the Mt Somers crew, we spent much of the afternoon lugging hoses and dampening down hotspots. I was knackered by the end of the afternoon and feeling really unfit.

Always in the back of my mind is my family history of diabetes. I don’t want this to happen to me, and I know that diet and exercise will reduce the risk.

Losing weight for me will mean being able to do the things I want to and becoming fitter. I will be able to enjoy running around and playing with my kids and will be able to take them on the walking tracks around the South Island. My goal is to climb Mt Somers and take the kids to some of the local huts.

My name is Maryann Heaven. I am a 36 year old full time teacher, at Mt Somers Springburn School. I have always struggled with my weight and have always been very conscious of it. During each of my three pregnancies I put on more and more weight and am now feeling pretty blimpy and uncomfortable.

Losing weight for me will mean wearing what I want to wear – not just things that fit. Also, 99% of the things I wear are black, as this is the colour I feel most comfortable in. I look forward to wearing colours again and choosing the things I like but could never fit at this weight.

I also want to be a good role model for my children. I am aware that the eating choices I make impact on

them and I don’t want them to repeat my mistakes.I am currently the biggest I have ever been.

However, I still try to get out on the tennis and netball court, but I am slow and huff and puff like the ‘Little Train That Could’.

Those who know me well know I hate to lose. So, the Weight Loss Challenge, is just the thing to motivate me.

Maryann Heaven

2011 Weight loss challenge

Hi my name is Anna Johnson and I have taken on the challenge to be Ashburton Guardian’s Biggest Loser. I live in Methven with my husband and two children, one aged two years and the other three months. I work at the local pre-school and am on different community groups, as well as the Methven Community Board. So why am I taking on this challenge? Before having my two children.

I was a healthy weight and enjoyed regular exercise, this has all changed. When I got pregnant with Matilda we had a few issues

with scans, this made me feel anxious through the pregnancy and I ate to comfort these feelings. Through a c-section I delivered a beautiful baby girl and for the fi rst three days life was so exciting. But my world came crashing down as I began to suffer from postnatal depression. Once again I turned to food as a comfort to the feelings I was experiencing. A year later I became pregnant with Patterson, and unfortunately hadn’t lost the extra weight. Patterson was born and once again it was great excitement for the fi rst few days but unfortunately I suffered from postnatal depression and

once again I turned to food. The weight went on and on as the viscous cycle of feeling bad because of the weight gain and eating to feel better took over. Through amazing support from family, friends, Methven

Medical Centre and medication, I have been able to beat the depression and am enjoying being a mother. So now it is time for me to look after myself and this is where the biggest loser comes in. I hope to be able to inspire others in a similar situation as me, to get healthy as I work towards achieving my goals. So bring on the next 6 months and size 12 jeans.

I have lived and worked in Ashburton since 2002. I am 51 years old, born a West Coaster.

I Spent most of my youth years growing up in Rangiora.

With my current employment I have moved around New Zealand, working in various cities and towns, before arriving in Ashburton.

Up until last year I was playing football on

a regular basis, and since giving that away have found it diffi cult to motivate myself to train with any enthusiasm.

Since fi nishing with football, I have found gaining weight to be easy and losing it hard.

I fi nd that during the winter, especially the colder months, I tend to eat more and comfort eat.

I want to lose the gut/weight because I know

that the fi tter I am, the less things worry me, it’s easier to cope with stress and my tolerance levels increase – both at home and at work.

I reckon that working as a group, it will give me the incentive to consider what I’m eating, manage the quantity, and also allow me to focus on my goal.

My biggest hurdle is getting out there and doing it, starting is the key for me.

I’m Kelly Mingay, 24, from Methven originally from Newport Pagnell in England. I have lived in New Zealand for 14 months with my kiwi partner.

My main reason for doing this challenge is to become more proportioned. I have always had a large chest and have always seen a reduction as an option, however I know any

procedure would be very painful, expensive and I could always return to my old shape. I hope that I can reduce my chest through the right exercise and diet. It’s hard to fi nd clothes that fi t me everywhere, so I tend to stick to frumpy clothes.

Since joining the Ashburton District Council I have noticed that I have been putting on a little extra around the middle. Whilst I know I am not

very overweight, I know that I live a very unhealthy lifestyle. Whilst in Queenstown over New Year I decided to walk the Devils Creek Track which steadily climbs. I have never had that much of a problem walking but I had to sit down and started to panic as I could not catch my breath. I realised that my health was suffering. I’m looking forward to the challenge and making a real lifestyle change.

MADE. STILL.

Feminine and beautiful.

Our Lives are not simple! Life requires us to be different people at different times!

This I have certainly realized and experienced this year so far … my Sabbatical has taken me on a road trip from Auckland to Wellington…. To Kaikoura to Christchurch to Oamaru to Arrowtown… with my granddaughter Eve (9) as the co-driver…we have flown home to Auckland to celebrate her 9th birthday and to keep the pulse happening within TCD walls…I have flown back to Queenstown to carry on the journey by myself.

I plan to head to Port Chalmers (my birth place) and be still, to sit at the cemetery and absorb the harbour with the tides of my childhood memories… to sit with friends of my parents… to gather cockles and to walk the beach at Aramoana… this is my place to inhale in and be inspired.

I have been wearing my Grandmother hat all month with some occasions I have had to put on my BOSS hat… but mainly I have been just remembering memories from my childhood and making memories for my granddaughter. She is in my ear at times, she is my conscience, she is the child within me, she is the next generation …’Bui Bui you are not meant to be working, Bui Bui please stop talking about the Pop Up Store… ’(Bui Bui is Fijiian for grandmother pronounced Bom Boo)

I am busy pointing out the amazing colours of the freshly rolled hay in the fields, the barley growing and the wheat…. The large spider like irrigation machines that span the vast fields… then into Gold country… tussock and schist on the mountains… the lakes… the blueness of the water… all so demanding of my senses… the fashion world has taken a backseat… but this is what inspires for the next seasons range!

Nature always delights me!My fashion style for now as you all head

back into routine of life… transforming from holiday mode into work mode.

Bright colorful dresses for the girl that loves colour. The versatility of a dress. Can’t get enough of them at the height of Summer… with the secret bloomer or bike pant underneath to relieve the thigh rubbing!

My fashion style for me as I travel around is based on being a tourist travelling everyday, comfort and reflecting about me as a person…. Intriguing interesting and thoughtful..

The base piece that has worked so wonderfully for me this season is the column dress… this has been my Summer staple this year… I have 3 short ones just above the knee… black, black /white with spots, beige. It is tight to the body… so I wear a camisole/tunic piece over it… this look is very good on the eye of people who are looking at us… it creates an illusion… I wear leggings with it when it is a cooler day… my lace trimmed bloomers when hot and gym shoes to keep me casual and practical.

I don’t wear high heels anymore. So I am always on the hunt for flat funky shoes… you need a few pairs of these. Minnie Cooper does some great leather ones, other wise Overland has a selection that I like.

I love a shoe with ankle strap or detail happening… and because my toes are unusual I make sure that they are painted all summer professionally… I cant manage it myself anymore and allow a hour every 5 weeks for just my feet!

It is the little details that others do notice and being bigger with wide feet and ugly toes (in my opinion) I do my best to keep them at their best!

Another fabulous month done… am on the road of life inhaling the beautiful South Island… you are so lucky to live here… it is so beautiful and the pace of life is something that I want!

Take care of you… you are worth it!

This course starts in front of the Methven Resort and riders will ride through the centre of town in a northerly direction and at the 3km mark will turn left into Waimarama Rd. This will take the riders due west until they hit the intersection of Waimarama Rd and Arundel Rakaia Gorge Rd. Riders will turn left into Arundel Rakaia Gorge Rd travelling due south and stay on this stretch of road until the 44km mark. The riders will then turn hard left into Mayfield Valetta Rd in a north easterly direction which then runs naturally into Thompsons Track. At the intersection of Thompsons Track and the Methven Highway (64.5km mark) riders will turn left onto the Methven Highway and ride due north to the finish line outside the Methven Resort.

This course starts right out in front of the Methven Resort on Main Street and riders will head due north through the township and then into the Mount Hutt Station Rd. After approximately 12 kilometres riders will turn left onto the Arundel Rakaia Gorge Rd and ride in a southerly direction along this road. At the 21km mark riders will turn left into Pudding Hill Rd and ride in an easterly direction. From Pudding Hill Rd riders will take an ever so slight right hand turn into Dip Road. Riders will make a left hand turn into Reynolds Rd that then runs naturally into Ledgerwood Rd. At the intersection of Ledgerwood Rd and SH 77 riders will turn left and head due north to finish back outside the Methven resort having completed approximately 37km of riding their bikes.

It takes courage and commitment to dedicate yourself to compete in an event like Girls on Bikes, especially if you’re not normally a cyclist! I think that the weekend warriors that train for such an event are incredibly brave and inspirational, so I talked to one of our local competitors, Rachel Allred from The Professionals in Methven.

Born and bred in Methven, Rachel attended Mt Hutt College, where she met her sweetheart, and now husband Mark. Both competitive and athletic in nature, Rachel and Mark were both the Mt Hutt Swimming champs, and both still share the same passion for swimming today, making sure their three children have learnt to swim from a young age. Rachel was also a brilliant Netball and Tennis player, representing Mid-Canterbury in both sports. Rachel has continued her love of tennis, playing in the social competition in Ashburton on a Thursday evening, and is competing in the Senior Tennis Nationals, representing Canterbury Country.

‘Girls on Bikes’ is running again this year, and Rachel will be competing in the long race for the second year. She hasn’t competed in cycling as a sport, but enjoys the social nature of this special event. “The event last year was fantastic. On the day there were a few nerves, because I hadn’t ridden anything like 76km before! On the day I started with a bunch of girls from Methven and basically fi nished with most of them. We rode as a group for the 76km, and having your friends for encouragement to keep you going was awesome.”

Rachel has recently completed the 12 week body challenge at the Mountain Gym, so entering the Girls on Bikes competition is a great way to keep up her weight loss and fi tness momentum. In preparation for tackling the event again this year, Rachel attends regular RPM classes at the Mountain Gym, and goes for bunch rides with other Methven ladies,

meeting on Wednesday’s from big Al’s – apart from when there is a screaming Nor’ Wester!

Rachel was inspired originally to compete in the Girls on Bikes to help support the local event. She was impressed with the large contingent of local Methven and Ashburton ladies that competed last year, which is important to the success of the event. The social event held afterwards with Robyn Malcolm was fantastic, and this year the party at the Methven Resort is promising to be just as fun.

There are a few technical aspects to riding in a large cycle race, such as learning to ride as part of a bunch and sharing turns at the front. “Organiser Peter Halligan came out on one of our training sessions just before the event. He gave us some great tips on riding in a group”, Rachel said. The biggest lesson learnt from last year for Rachel is to make sure she is well stocked on glucose and water. Last year with 11km to ride, Rachel had run out of water and lollies, and fatigue started setting in. “This year I will be better prepared” Rachel said.

The million dollar question that I asked Rachel was, how does she fi t so much into her life? She is a Real Estate Agent with the Professionals in Methven, she is an accountant for House of Travel in Christchurch, has three gorgeous children and concentrates on her passion for Tennis. “The honest answer is I have a wonderful husband and a great support network through my family. Grandparents can look after the children, and being a Real Estate agent gives me the fl exibility to sneak away for a quick bike ride during the day” Rachel said.

Living proof, that no matter how busy your lifestyle, you don’t need to be a cycling expert to take part in a life changing event like Girls on Bikes. Your body will love you for it!

Each month the team at Envy explore an envious home or renovation project within Mid-Canterbury. This month, we were invited to view a gorgeous new home on the outskirts of Ashburton, built by AB Construction for Janice and Allan Harrison.

The most impressionable feature that this new home exudes is space, and a light, airy decor. From the second that you step through the front door, the wide hallway gives the immediate impression of class and light, with skylights set in the sloped

ceiling to illuminate the space. Rich Persian rugs and classic wooden furniture prevail the home throughout.

The main living and dining area is completely open through to the kitchen, allowing for one glorious room, again giving the feeling of roominess. Janice didn’t want enormous windows, instead choosing smaller, unique windows at the end of the living area that she had seen in an interior design magazine. Their architect was David Shephard, and Janice and Allan were able to work with

him in creating their dream home. They had previously owned a property on the section next door, and had always planned on building new, to incorporate all of the qualities that made up their dream home. By working with David, they were able to make suggestions and alterations to the plan to incorporate their dreams.

One of the unique qualities in the living area is the hidden feature light. The ceiling is fl at the majority of the way across, and then a separate panel slants upward at a sharp angle. The two sections don’t meet

solidly, leaving a gap. In this gap, a long light was installed, that gives the area a gorgeous, soft glow. The light also changes colour for extra effect.

The furniture that gives the home its warmth was all pre-existing from their old home. The house was actually designed with their existing furniture in mind, making sure that each piece had a home that would accentuate its beauty.

The open living area opens out to a spacious, modern outdoor area, with large cut concrete panels. Paveco created the

A sentimental masterpieceThe composite stone bench top is the centerpiece in the elegant, stylish kitchen.

The den is a peaceful sanctuary where Janice and Alan can take time out to read or play the piano.

stunning effect, by giving the concrete a heavy brush to add texture, cut into large panels to give the large tile impression, and then coated to add a sophisticated sheen.

The house is surrounded by a concrete patio, which was a design request from Janice and Allan. Positioned above, the slanted ceiling gives the patio a modern twist. A landscape gardener was consulted for recommendations to the gardens, and then Janice and Alan have put a lot of work in, planting Portuguese Laurel to provide privacy once the garden establishes further.

Back inside, the kitchen is modern and stylish, with state of the art new appliances in stainless steel. The smooth as silk bench top is made from composite stone, coloured a warm, almost golden grey that blends well with the polished wooden fl oor. Janice and Allan consulted with Judith Doig, who assisted in choosing the colour concept of the interior and exterior. Getting a professional opinion

on colouring is a fantastic idea, as the end result produces a spectrum that not many of us are able to envisage.

Janice is a piano enthusiast, and plays the organ at church. Naturally a beautiful piano has been incorporated into the decor of the den. It is an area that is dedicated to relaxation, with comfy furniture, a plentiful supply of books, and other entertainment features.

The sleek home has also been thoughtfully designed with practicality in mind. The individual toilet has a large basin area and mirror, with exquisite fi ttings, making the most of the space and adding the feeling of indulgence for a traditionally simple area. The stunning colours in the tiles have been copied into the main bathroom, which features an impressive and indulgent deep bath, shaped like an old fashioned stand alone tub, but designed with a shiny white exterior. The tiles, installed by Dave Taylor from Warmup, incorporate under

fl oor heating, for the ultimate bathroom experience on a chilly winter morning.

The three bedrooms are all furnished to different tastes. The fi rst has a large double bed, covered in a delightful yellow sunfl ower coloured bedspread, which Janice made herself. It has sliding door access to the outside veranda.

The second has 2 single wooden beds, giving the room a warm, country feeling. Two large cupboards have been built in for added storage, which Janice uses to store for two favourite hobbies, art and sewing.

The third is the Master bedroom, spacious and eloquently furnished. Pale blue colours is against striking black, with matching bedside lamps, and matching feature chairs. The ensuite is beautifully matched to the main bathroom in design, sleek and sophisticated.

Janice loves to paint, and art is a prominent feature throughout the house. One of her favourite pieces is situated in

the master bedroom. It features a Mount Cook landscape scene with sheep, and light blue hands coming from the sky, nurturing the fl ock. It is entitled ‘The lord is my Shepherd’ and was painted by a Brazilian artist, Livia Dias.

Janice and Allan’s favourite painting, which is lovingly hung in the main living area, is by artist Debbie Lambert. A photo was taken by their son while he was mustering sheep, at Birchwood Station, beside the Ahuriri River, Omarama. The photo was captured beautifully in Debbie’s painting, and Janice and Allan purchased it.

Janice and Allan have made praise to AB construction, for their hard work and dedication toward building their dream home. “Cedric was an absolute pleasure to work with, and kept us informed every step of the way”. They can now relax, and enjoy their days surrounded by their very own masterpiece.

The bathroom features a deep tub and underfl oor heating, for blissful relaxation on a chilly evening.

The spacious master bedroom with elegant ensuite, blends delicate pale blue with striking black, enhanced by feature windows.

Safe as houses Pet friendly gardens

Passionate gardeners who are animal lovers can fi nd it challenging to strike a balance between a lush, productive garden and a place that pets, children and people can enjoy. Cats and dogs love garden life and enjoy spending time with you whilst you toil away at your horticultural chores.

When it comes to sharing your garden with pets and the other animals that live in your garden careful choices need to be made about what to use on your garden to ensure you don’t harm your faithful companions and their friends.

Being more environmentally aware of the effects of garden products has numerous benefi ts to wildlife in the garden like birds as well as for your pets. Vets often see animals and pets poisoned by chemicals and garden products from unaware gardeners.

The main causes of pet problems are when cats, dogs or birds eat slug bait or chemical fertilisers, chew chemical bottles or lick or eat wet weed sprays. In some cases, rabbits are fed material, which has been sprayed with chemicals that can make them very ill.

A number of products are now available that are pet friendly and safe to use in the garden for the whole family. Many of these are organic and/or chemically free giving you the knowledge that if you use them on edible crops they are still going to be safe for you to eat.

Slugs and snails are food fi ghters, and they hunt at night, and soon make a mess of fresh salads crops, hostas and other soft leafed plants. Tui Quash is New Zealand’s safest slug and snail bait as it is not a poison, but is very effective in killing slugs and snails. Quash has been a trusted product for years among garden and animal lovers and is safe to use

throughout the garden. Fertiliser is the backbone to any garden. The choice of what fertiliser to use can often be confusing particularly when you have animals and small children to consider. Choose an organic safe option such as Eco Fert to feed your plants. This stuff is a powerhouse of goodies that plants love and quickly respond too; soon your garden will be rewarding you with lush growth and bumper crops. Compost and animal manure both add nutrients to the garden too. Apply in thick layers every few months. If you don’t have access to farm manure or have a compost bin visit your garden centre and pick up super sheep pellets and bags of Tui Organic Compost, both are superb food sources for the soil. What’s more, neither of them smell so no need to worry about the dog coming in smelling of sheep poo.

Insects and bugs can be a real problem. Generally, they arrive when growing conditions are not ideal. The challenge once they arrive is getting rid of the bad bugs and keeping the good bugs. Some insects are predators like ladybirds; they eat the bad bugs hence you want to keep these good guys in the garden. Bees are important too as they pollinate fl owers which help produce fruit and vegetables such as tomatoes and beans. Most chemical sprays kill all the insects in the area, good and bad. Eco Pest is a superb insect spray that only kills the bad bugs (like aphids, scale and whitefl y), leaving the good guys on the job to keep doing all the important jobs in the garden. It’s easy to use, effective, and ideal to use in the pet friendly garden.

Cruising on the Pearl Nathan BarlettTravel Expert

Envy Travel

Cruising is one of the most relaxing ways to explore different countries, unpack once, settle into your cabin and get ready for the most unforgettable holiday experience. There are so many ships among which to choose the task can seem daunting. The range on offer also means you will fi nd the right match that suits you and your budget and House of Travel are always on hand to assist you with this decision. Recently Nathan Bartlett and Michelle Reid from House of Travel Ashburton experienced cruising on P & O Cruises Pacifi c Pearl from Auckland and are keen to share this experience with you.

New Zealand fi nally has a cruise ship based here for much of the year with cruises departing from Auckland – P & O Cruises’ Pacifi c Pearl. With 11 passenger decks, Pacifi c Pearl is a medium-sized ship which carries up to 1800 passengers. The contemporary ship offers fun, affordable cruising and an amazing variety of cruise

holidays from 3 night Food & Wine Cruises where there will be an array of presentations, workshops, activities and events designed especially to enhance your knowledge of food & wine; to longer cruises to the Pacifi c Islands and Australia where each day you will wake to spectacular views and discover a new piece of paradise. Every amazing destination offers something different – you can stroll the shores of crystal clear lagoons, go snorkelling and leave your footprints on white-sand beaches.

We were lucky enough to have a taste of what Pacifi c Pearl has to offer and were very impressed. After completing check-in formalities, we boarded and settled into our cabins which have all the facilities required for a relaxing holiday, upgrade to a Balcony Cabin to further experience your cruise holiday! Leaving Auckland, we sat back and relaxed with a beverage in hand watching as the city disappeared and

everyday stresses were left behind. After cruising for a while, it was time to check out the facilities, fi rst stop, The Waterfront Restaurant for a bite to eat. The Waterfront Restaurant serves a la carte breakfast, lunch and dinner – the dinner menu has two menus which you can mix and match – an every-day dinner menu and a daily special menu – so if there is something you like the sound of on the daily special menu then have it as you can always have what’s on offer on the everyday menu tomorrow night! The food was tasty and well presented. Other restaurants on board include Plantation Restaurant – a casual buffet restaurant with serving hot and cold breakfast, lunch and dinner; and Salt Grill by Luke Mangan (recognised internationally as one of Australia’s leading chefs and restauranteurs) which is an exclusive lunch and dinner venue, a cover charge applies here. There are 5 bars that cater for everyone: cocktails at MIX, the

pub-style Orient and The Oasis located in the adults only area. After dinner it was time to see a show in The Marquee Theatre, we were treated to a Vegas-style performance featuring well-known songs and superb dancing. The next day we further explored the ships facilities which include Aqua Heath Spa for all those spa and beauty treatments; the two swimming pools and spas; The Big Screen which can be seen from the pools, playing movies and music videos; and Pacifi c Cirque – aerial acrobatics shows and interactive circus classes – our show this evening. Before long, it was time for bed again, the next morning waking up back in Auckland and back to the real world.

We at House of Travel are keen to make your dream cruise a reality and always love the opportunity to discuss the many options with you from Cruising the South Pacifi c, World Voyage or Alaska we have the cruise that suits your needs.

In 1943, a brave soldier returns to Ashburton from the war torn deserts of the Middle East. As an engineer, his mission was to build railway tracks to assist the allies in moving important cargo to support the war effort. He was one of the lucky ones that returned home safely. Early in 1944, Les Cornwall went to a dance on a Saturday night, at what was originally known as the Radiant Hall. It was the place to socialise back in those days. He asked

a lovely lady by the name of Pauline to dance, and they haven’t been parted since.

Later that week Les had made arrangements to take Pauline to the pictures on a date. “Boys were two a penny back then, so I wasn’t really too fussed, but my father insisted because he was a returned soldier”, Pauline said. They went on more dates, and in July 1944, Les asked Pauline to marry him. There were no places to go out for a meal in Ashburton in 1944, so there was no elaborate proposal. “I just asked her” Les said.

He didn’t seek her parent’s permission, jokingly he said she was old enough to make up her own mind.

They were married later that year at the

Presbyterian Church in Ashburton, but Pauline’s father had fallen very ill, and couldn’t make it out of the hospital to attend the wedding. Nine months later, their first son Alan arrived, followed by two more, Murray and Judith.

66 years later, they are still together, and are surrounded by a loving family of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Pauline doesn’t describe Les as a particularly romantic man, but she said he has done some really “beaut things” for her over the years. One weekend, Pauline and Les went shopping in Christchurch with friends, and Pauline saw a gorgeous statue that she very much wanted for her garden. Being careful with money, she pondered over the purchase for quite some time, but in the end decided not buy the statue. When she got home, she commented to Les about how silly she had been, and that she should have brought it. On Christmas morning later that year, Les told Pauline that she had a special present waiting on the porch. It was the very same statue. He had discovered the name of the shop, and described to the shop assistant where it was positioned, and left it at his brothers place until Christmas.

Pauline absolutely loved it and named the statue ‘Tabatha’. Tabatha still sits in their garden today.

What is the secret to a long and love filled marriage like Les and Pauline? “Tolerance and a lot of give and take” Pauline said. “It’s never perfect, but marriage is for life. Back then when you made a promise to someone you treasured it.”

This Valentines day, we can all dream of having a lasting love like Les and Pauline.

0800 AORAKI (267 254) or 302 8172

On a chilly, frosty morning, a group of strangers huddled in the Aoraki Balloon Safari office. Nervousness and excitement was thick in the air. We were all given thick plastic covers to put over our shoes to help keep our feet warm while we were up in the air, and at the peak of your flight, you certainly appreciate them!We piled into the van and set off on the adventure, a true safari. The pilots ran a number of wind tests along the way, to pin point the perfect take-off location. We reached a secret paddock deep in the country surrounding Methven, and started to unpack the large balloons. There were two balloons going up that morning, and we all helped to get the large parachute like domes filled with the hot air from the massive gas blowtorches. As the balloons continued to fill, the baskets were almost set to rise, so we all piled in, extremely excited about what was about to happen next. The anticipation is incredible, you are gripping the side of the basket, willing yourself to be lighter so that the basket can rise, then all of a sudden, one last big burst on the gas burners and we can feel the basket lift from the ground. The feeling is exhilarating, as you slowly rise above the earth, heart pounding, knowing that you are now in the hands of nature and your pilot, to be taken to where the breeze blows.Rising higher and higher, the views across the patchwork plains towards the snow capped

Southern Alps is stunning. Rising higher and higher, as far as the eye can see, you can see almost all of Canterbury, from the ocean to the mountains, including a glorious view of Mount Cook! I stopped to try and take in the experience, but it is so magical, words truely can’t describe the emotion. Gliding weightlessly, so high above the earth, you feel like you are in heaven. So peaceful, there’s not a sound other than the occasional blast of heat from the gas burners. The photo opportunities are endless, from capturing the expansive landscape, to detailed shots of the snow capped Southern Alps, to viewing the beautifully braided rivers, from mountain to sea.As we slowly start drifting back towards earth, it is time to take a final look at the beauty of Mid-Canterbury and prepare for the landing. At this point you are totally at the mercy of mother nature and the experienced pilot. A clear paddock is chosen, and we brace for the landing. The basket gracefully hits the ground and bounces along, once, twice, then skids across the earth coming to a complete stop.We made it! The adrenalin is pumping and everyone is grinning and laughing. We are greeted at our destination by a fine gentleman in a suit, ready to serve us a champagne breakfast. Aoraki Balloon Safari’s is truely an experience to remember for a lifetime, and one that I personally will treasure forever.- Amanda Niblett.

It’s time for dessert, but all of the men have disappeared. There’s not a single one of them to be found in the house anywhere. This seems odd, men are always close at hand when it comes to dessert! Then the penny dropped. On this winters evening, all the men could be found outside in the mobile home, watching rugby thanks to the sky decoder installed!

Myra and Bazel Severinsen experienced this exact scenario recently while visiting their daughter who didn’t have Sky installed in the house, so the mobile home doubled as an outdoor men’s bonding area!

Myra and Bazel are now retired, after a busy life of teaching and farming. Myra still does some relief teaching from time to time, and they have both been farming for 40 years. Their children are grown up themselves, and live over various parts of New Zealand and the USA.

Upon their retirement, they discussed different ways of investing for their future. After contemplating different options, they decided to by-pass common “Blue Chip” investment opportunities, and committed to an investment that would give their life great joy and fulfillment. They had always dreamed that owning a mobile home would be fun and exciting, and invested in a newly built motorhome from Lifestyle Motorhomes.

They had both travelled New Zealand extensively on business related trips for the farm, to events such as shows, judging and conferences, but being able to pack up and leave just for themselves had always seemed like a distant dream. With Myra’s teaching, and the commitment of stock on the farm, it was hard to be able to travel away for a lengthy holiday.

The sale of their property allowed them to turn their dream into a reality, and chose to build their motorhome from new, so they could choose the individual specifications that were important to them.

The bus option was the first major decision, as the concept of ‘turning the seats around and they were home’ appealed, rather than worrying about getting out and setting up in all types of weather as you would have to consider with a caravan or fifth wheel.

They were able to specify a separate shower from the toilet, as considerations were made for ease of use, as Bazel had recently had a knee replacement, and has another one due shortly.

Myra loves lots of light, so she was able to choose wall coverings and décor that gave a light and airy feeling to the interior. A comfortable bed was a must, and a welcome luxurious addition. They have both obtained their Heavy Traffic licenses, so driving duties are shared.

“We looked around several dealerships and coachbuilders before deciding on Lifestyle to work with. They were and still are excellent to work with. They advised and helped us through every aspect of the build and listened to our requirements. They were extremely friendly and professional and we regard them and their staff as friends. We also knew before finally signing up exactly what the motor home would cost and throughout the build we were welcome to visit and see every stage. Their five year followup action was a deciding factor”, Myra said.

One of their favourite holiday spots in the mobile home is Lake Ohau. “There’s nothing more relaxing than the mountain scenery, placid lake and the calm, sweet air helping to wash away worries and care”, Myra said.

They also use the motorhome to visit their children. It’s great being able to have their own space and their own comfortable bed, as well as a bit of a hide away when exuberant grandchildren get a little exhausting!

Their advice to anyone thinking about owning their own motorhome, is to talk to other motorhome owners for advice, have a look over a few models to get ideas on specifications you would like – then go for it!

February 2011

Your stars with Madame Latanya...

Aries Mar 20 - Apr 20 It’s really about giving to yourself this

month, it’s not bad to be selfi sh and think of you, after all if you don’t who will? Enjoy being you and others will too! Personal beauty and health care will get you everywhere, infusing a new sense of health and energy. Pamper yourself, and others will join right in.

Taurus 20 Apr - 20 MayThis is a very positive time in your marriage

or closest love relationships. Your need to be together and to share loving feelings is very strong. You want to give to your friends and loved ones, and may spend generously in order to make them happy. You may also meet someone now that is very good for you in the long run.

Gemini 21 May - 21 Jun This is a time for you to shine! This is also

a good time to begin something new, to initiate a relationship or project you may have been considering. You have an extra measure of energy and confi dence now and will make a strong impression on those in your environment. You will be noticed more than usual.

Cancer 22 Jun - 22 Jul Heightened appetites (of all sorts) are a

natural this time of the month, as will be opportunities to fulfi l them. Pick as you would from a smorgasbord and don’t chow down too heavily -- the taste is what counts, volume only slows you down. Variety is the spice, intensity the sweetness, whatever or whoever is involved. This is a good time for just getting out there and getting physical.

Leo 23 Jul - 22 Aug This can be a time for exposing and talking

about hidden, intensely private or secret subjects. It could be about past issues or current fantasies. Conversations and interactions are intense. Just be sure the person you share your inner thoughts with is someone you can trust. Love reigns supreme this month, you will fi nd yourself and your partner fi ring on all cylinders!

Virgo 23 Aug - 22 Sep This month could be like a roller coaster

ride with crazy emotional ups and downs. Positive energy will be coming and going out of nowhere to remind you of your more important purpose. Try not to get so weighed down in the lows of the day that you fail to see the opportunities when they hit the highs.

Libra 23 Sep - 23 Oct Relationships of all types are energetic

now and cooperation, compromise, and adjustments to others’ viewpoints are key issues that require your attention. You may come into contact with a person who will be especially creative or infl uential in your life.

Scorpio 24 Oct - 21 Nov Scheduling time for recreation or to take

care of a personal relationship is a good idea now. Just be aware that the desire to socialize and be friendly, or even to be loved may interfere with getting commitments done.

Sagittarius 22 Nov - 21 Dec Memories and old feelings surface at this

time, things you may have forgotten or wanted to forget. You may wish to visit, email, or make a telephone call to someone from your past. Any closure you can get at this time from past issues will benefi t you in all your other relationships both now and in the future.

Capricorn 22 Dec - 19 Jan You fi nd yourself revealing secrets or

very private matters, and also asking very penetrating questions of others. Superfi cial answers don’t satisfy you now. There is great depth to your conversations. This is an excellent time to learn more about your own inner depths and those of a romantic partner.

Aquarius 20 Jan - 18 Feb Stability, maturity, and cooperation are the

key issues during this time. You feel in tune with your romantic partner on important issues. You could fi nd that others share common concerns about important aspects of your life.

Pisces 19 Feb - 20 Mar You feel especially attractive or friendly,

and the warmth you radiate is noticed and appreciated this month. Love, relationships, beauty, and pleasure are emphasized now for you now. A new romance or friendship may come about, or an old or current one may take a turn for the better.

The most extensive mobilehome show in New Zealand is set to embark at the Ashburton Showgrounds once again this February. The popular extravaganza is in it’s ninth year and has become a must-attend event for buyers and sellers of motorhomes, caravans, campers and accessories associated with living life on the move.

The exceptional feature of this popular showcase, is that any owner of a motorhome can set up their pride and joy for display. Even if it’s technically not on the market, they can list an asking price and see what enquiries arrive upon the day. Most mobilehome owners are fi lled with pride about their home on wheels, so it is a friendly occasion for like-minded mobilehome owners to unite and share their passion. It is said to be more like a giant rally than an exhibition.

The site for displaying a mobilehome is inexpensive compared with traditional exhibiting shows, and because of the shear number of mobilehomes on display, the day attracts a phenomenal number of interested viewers.

The range of mobile homes on display is impressive, and varied for different levels of purchasers, from entry level units at $6,000, right through to the most luxurious units on the market valued at approx $800,000.

Lifestyle Motorhomes, who have been operating in Ashburton for 10 years, will have a strong presence at the show, showcasing a range of mobile homes, from newly built, to second hand. They build motorhomes from scratch and do conversions from buses to motor homes. During the tough times of the recession, Lifestyle Motorhomes were busy developing a new way to build. They have created a Motorhome using a composite fi breglass, instead of the traditional steel. The composite material is lighter and stronger than traditional materials, it doesn’t rust, and it has excellent insulation. An example

of this breakthrough in motorhome design can be viewed at the show.

Another new concept recently created by the Lifestyle Motorhome team is their ‘Lifestyle Versatile Hauler’. It is a custom designed trailer, with the ability to store motorbikes, pushbikes and other equipment within, as well as storing items on top. The inside can be furnished with a bench top and a fully plumbed sink so when you reach your destination and un-pack you have an ‘on the go’ kitchen.

An awning can then be attached to increase the space. It can be designed to your individual specifi cations, making it perfect for travelling sports teams and recreational camping and fi tness enthusiasts.

Whether you have owned many motorhomes, are in the market for a new motorhome or are just curious to have a browse, the Mobile home Extravaganza is a fun day out for all of the family.

As an artist and ex-florist, Jan is cut out to work in her industry. She’s spent more than 10 years making hand-painted, hand-embossed and hand-stamped cards, with the ability to barcode them for the overseas markets.About seven years ago she converted and opened part of her personal premises into Jancraft Craft Boutique and she hasn’t looked back since. She started off by setting up just one room to sell out of but, as the business has expanded, that room has become her year ‘round Christmas room and half of her premises is now dedicated solely to Jancraft.Set in a peaceful cottage garden, Jancraft is true to its boutique name.“I’m an ex-florist so I like everything window-dressed and very visual, I’ve got a big cottage-style garden that my customers absolutely love.”The shop offers keen scrap bookers and card makers all the supplies they could possibly need.“There’s a huge range of stickers and stick-on embellishments, about 30 colours of card for card-making, card liners, rubber stamps and more,” Jan says.

“I’m regularly accessing new products from all over the world so that I’ve constantly got new things for my customers to look at as they come in. One thing Jan prides herself on is being able to provide her customers, many of which come from Ashburton, with “good, old fashioned, friendly, one on one service”.With her business expanding, Jan, who can be seen weekly with her shop on CTV, has decided to turn one third of her premises into Jancraft and rebuild her house for herself. The change will mean a huge upheaval for Jan, however, she is looking forward to it immensely and to offering her customers an even bigger and better one stop shop for scrap booking and card making requirements.“I’m really passionate about my shop and it’s just progressing and expanding more and more as time goes by to the point where I had to expand my premises.“As an artist and ex-florist, this is what I do best.”
