Importance of Number Sense
and Mental Math
Number Sense includes understanding of number
meaning and numerical relationship (ex. 13)
Place value, (de)composing numbers, properties,
order of magnitude
Teaching for understanding is crucial for
computational fluency and long term retention
Apply mathematical skills to many situations
Solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals build the foundation to successfully apply more demanding math concepts and
procedures, and move into applications.
Stress not only procedural skill but also conceptual understanding, to make sure students are learning and absorbing the critical information they need to succeed at higher levels
KINDERGARTEN
Tens Frame
Breaking numbers apart
GRADE 1
Part-Part Whole relationships
Involves seeing numbers as being made of two or more parts
Major conceptual achievement of the early years
Increases understanding of subsequent work with:
place value
number concepts
word problems
distributive property
GRADE 2
Subtraction on a hundreds chart
Number sense development to break numbers apart
GRADE 3
Partial Products
strong emphasis on place value
it can be used for all number types (whole numbers, decimals and
fractions)
it is later useful in multiplying algebraic terms (t +2)(t+3) = t2 + 2t + 3t +
