Tashi Delek!

A warm welcome to the third edition of our Annual

Report. ENVISION is committed to paving paths for

young Tibetans to become self reliant, dynamic and

contributing members of the community. Our three

Programmes: Tibetan Career Services, Building Bridges

and Global Tibetan Professionals Network (GTPN)

have been instrumental in enabling us to work towards

achieving our commitment.

Being a small organisation, we have the flexibility to learn

quickly from mistakes, adapt and adopt new initiatives.

During this year, we were able to launch a few small

initiatives. Career Help Desk was set up at Samyeling

Tibetan Settlement, Majnu ka Tilla targeting unemployed

youth around the Settlement and is operational every

Wednesdays. We have also been able to set aside a

small fund to support aspirations and commitments of

Emerging Tibetan Generation. Two Tibetan University

students were supported this year through this initiative

- to publish a book and organise a festival. Another

initiative this year is Celebrating Tibetan Professionals

with the objective of creating platforms for Tibetan

professionals to share their work experience and

learnings with others.

Tibetan Homes School based in Rajpur, Dehradun joined

us as a new School partner under our School Exchange

Programmes. We found an Indian counterpart school for

THS Rajpur in Olympus High School, Dehradun. We also

found another Indian counterpart for TCV Selaqui School

in Cambrian Hall.

Northeast Career Exploration Workshop is another new

initiative of the year. Based on many interactions and

feedback from Tibetans from the North east region in

India, we felt a need to reach out to Tibetan schools in the

region. ENVISION team organised workshops for Class X,

XI and XII students in Sambhota Tibetan School, Sonada,

Central Tibetan School Darjeeling and Kalimpong

covering 117 students.

ENVISION’s external outreach events expanded to

include Tibetan Muslim School students from Kashmir

and University students from Taiwan.

ENVISION has always steered clear of traditional

methodologies of imparting trainings and workshops to

youth relying on interactive and creative approaches.

Through over 15 outreach events including

collaborations, our team was able to reach 697 young

Tibetans of which over 400 were school students.

Our work to serve Tibetan youth has been possible

only with generous support from our core funder,

Tibet Relief Fund (TRF). As TRF celebrates its 60th

anniversary this year, we would like to express our

indebtedness to TRF for its steadfast support and

commitment to Empowering the Vision Project in

particular and Tibetans in general.

We are also grateful for the cooperation and support

received from our Trustees, partnering schools,

organisations, Tibetan professionals and various

individuals. We would like to thank them all for their

generosity and commitment to our work with Tibetan

Youth.

With Best Wishes,

Youdon Aukatsang

Executive Summary Empowering the Vision Project (ENVISION) was set up in New Delhi in 2007 as a non-governmental and non-profit

organisation dedicated to empowering youth of Tibetan origin between the age group of 15-35. It is our vision to have

self-reliant, dynamic and contributing young Tibetans in the community.

Settlement. Not only were youth seeking employment helped with career guidance and job preparedness, we were also

able to connect a few who were unable to continue formal education with skills training institutes.

To support university students in pursuing their passion, innovation and commitment, ENVISION started a small

initiative this year under Emerging Tibetan Generation project. Under this banner, we supported publication of a book

Workshop for students in the north east region with

Sambhota School Sonada and Central School for

Tibetans, Darjeeling and Central School for Tibetans,

Kalimpong covering 117 students. During the feedback

session, many students expressed that they had never

participated in self-exploration activities before and

that it was the most useful session of the workshop.

Tibetan Homes Rajpur became our new school partner

under Building Bridges School Exchange Programme

during this year. The other school partners are TCV

Selaqui and STSS Poanta, and our Indian school

partners are Guru Nanak Mission in Paonta, Cambrian

Hall and Olympus High School in Dehradun. 169

Tibetan students and 312 Indian students participated

in the school exchange programme this year.

2018 Annual Leadership Workshop for class XII

students of STS Poanta and TCV Selaqui focusing on

inner leadership skills had 126 participants. In addition

to having Tibetan artists lead sessions on assertiveness

and critical thinking, the second day’s sessions on

self-exploration and goal setting were led entirely by

ENVISION team.

ENVISION supports 10 Tibetan students each year to

participate in Let’s Make a Difference Conference (LMAD),

an Annual National Youth Conference organised by

Initiative of Change and held at Asia Plateau, Panchgani,

Maharashtra for young people in the age group of 16-30

years from 1st - 8th June.

An interactive workshop on Self Exploration with Tibetan

Muslim students from Kashmir, facilitation of two Tibetan

law students to participate in the International Summer

School programme in Delhi and an Informal interaction with

a Taiwanese students/Teacher group were some external

outreach events of the year.

GTPN Role Model Visit this year was conducted at STS

Poanta and THF Rajpur where four GTPN members from

diverse field shared their experiences with students of

Classes IX, X, XI and attended to their queries. ENVISION

organised annual GTPN picnic, a Delhi by Bike Tour event

for Tibetan professionals in Delhi and also an interactive

session on leadership with Tashi Gyaltsen, TRF Trustee

under our Celebrating Tibetan Professionals Forum to

celebrate successful Tibetan professionals and provide

a platform for learning and networking amongst Tibetan

professionals in Delhi.

Leadership Workshop

ENVISION’s Leadership Workshop focuses on

developing inner leadership of Tibetan school students

through self-exploration, creativity and other interactive

approaches.

For the past two consecutive years, this workshop is

being held at the Tibetan Private Industrial Training

Institute (ITI) Selaqui, formerly known as SOS Vocational

Training Centre for Tibetans. The two-day workshop

began with an orientation and welcome dinner on

Friday, 6th April for 126 students from TCV Selaqui and

Sambhota Tibetan School, Paonta including 12 students

from ITI on the request of the institute. Participants

were divided into four groups to foster better interaction

within themselves through the course of the workshop.

Bhuchung D. Sonam (Poet & Writer), Karma Sichoe

(Tibetan Thangka Painter & Artist) and Tenzin Tsundue

(Writer & Activist) were invited as resource persons.

While Bhuchung emphasized on the need for space

for discussion, debate and critique for any form of

art to excel, Karma opined that education should not

necessary be inclined to conventional methodology but

also should involve students’ participation in creativity,

self-awareness and imaginative activities through artistic

engagements. Tsundue shared his passion for story-

telling and need for critical thinking in our community.

Their presentations on myriad facets of leadership

particularly passion, creativity and critical thinking

enabled students to explore and think out-of-the-box

in leading their career and lives with self-realization of

their core values.

The two-day workshop concluded with ENVISION’s “Let’s

Make a Difference” (LMAD) session during which students

share their commitment to make a difference. This

session is the most significant session as students not only

implement what they learned from the workshop but go

beyond to think how each of them can make a difference.

Students’ commitment(s) varied from becoming less

judgmental to reading books, writing journals, to

reaffirming self-potentials at the end of the day.

During the feedback and evaluation session, students

expressed how they could relate with the speakers, their

“unconventional interest/passion,” the power to express

self through drawing, writing, and theatre.

At first I thought this

workshop would be like any other

workshop, but I am glad it turned out

quite unique and enlightening for me

as I never thought about linking art and

leadership.

Mission Admission Workshop for Tibetan high school

graduates was held on 24-25, June at Tibetan Community

Hall, Majnu Ka Tilla, New Delhi by ENVISION with support

from student volunteers - Students General Improvement

Group (SGIG), Global Tibetan Students Union (GTSU) and

process followed by a session with Tibetan Professionals

in the afternoon. The second day began with an interactive

session with Ashutosh Bharadwaj, Deputy Dean of DU

Foreign Students Office, and ended with a north campus

college tour and a feedback/evaluation session.

During the course of the workshop various topics

including DU college eligibility criteria, top colleges

of DU in corresponding to concerned subjects and

faculties, necessary documents to be prepared, hostel

accommodation facilities, and general etiquettes of a

college-going student in Delhi- challenges, opportunities

and experiences – were covered. Participants were taken

through a demo run of DU form filling practice as well.

An interaction with Dr Ashitosh Bharadwaj, Deputy

Dean of Foreign Students at Delhi University, and

his team is a conscious effort to ensure a first hand

information and interaction on foreign students quota

application procedures and to maintain connection

between the Foreign Students Office and Tibetan

students.

As a follow up to the Workshop, ENVISION in

collaboration with Bureau Education Officer (DOE,

CTA) and Volunteer Student Groups guided Tibetan

students through admission processes at the DU

Foreign Students Office for two consecutive days on

4-5th July, 2018. This was a step towards ensuring

that all Tibetan students aspiring to join DU had

the necessary guidance and support on the day of

admission.

Empowering the Vision Project (ENVISION) held its first Career Exploration Workshop in the North east of India from

October 26-28 in three schools: Sambhota Tibetan School, Sonada, CST Darjeeling and CST Kalimpong. All the three

schools have no assigned Career Counselors except for a North east Career Counselor who visits the schools twice a

year.

North East Career Exploration Workshop

The Career Exploration Workshop had three main objectives:

•Create self-awareness by helping students in exploring their values and interests

•Provide information on college options/career choices/scholarship opportunities

•Share information on ENVISION’s programme

Our workshops covered 117 students of which 35 were Class IX & X students of Sambhota Sonada, 38 were Class

XII students of Darjeeling and 44 were Class XII students of Kalimpong. The workshops were facilitated by Youdon

Gyatso, Class IXSambhota Sonada

I was thinking of discontinuing my studies

but after attending this workshop, I gained

clarity on what to do in life and about

various career options.

Aukatsang, Director and Tenzing Migmar, Executive

Assistant on behalf of ENVISION.

In all the three workshops, students were given ample

space to introspect and explore their values and interests

using various tools and activities. ENVISION team also

dwelled on college options based on streams of study and

emerging careers.

In the feedback session, many expressed that they have

never participated in self-exploration activities before and

that it was the most useful session of the workshop.

ENVISION initiated a Career Help Desk at Samyeling Tibetan Settlement, Majnu Ka Tilla every Wednesdays from the office of Regional Tibetan Women’s Association to reach out to unemployed Tibetan youth living in and near the Settlement which became fully operational in March. Most of the drop ins are young Tibetans unsure of career paths to pursue including some who were not able to continue their formal education after Class VIII and IX. ENVISION team attends to all drop ins and assist them with career guidance, job linkages and job readiness skills including cover letter and resume writing. ENVISON has been able to assist 15 young Tibetans so far through this outreach. While five youths applied for various jobs and are still awaiting confirmation, four needed help with resume writing and two were seeking scholarship guidance. Another two young Tibetans have been enrolled in training programmes with ENVISION’s facilitation- one in Tibetan Private Industrial Training Institute in Selaqui for a one year Cooking Course and the other in Second Chance Programme at Ritinjali where he will be focusing on computer studies and life skills development for two years and also work on completing his class 10th board examination.

Apart from studying various life skills at

Ritinjali, I have also enrolled for a computer

course. It has been more than a month

since I joined and I have adapted well to

the environment here, and have also made

some good friends.

ENVISION has also started a small initiative this year to

support emerging young Tibetan leaders to pursue their

passion, innovation and commitment. The need for such

an initiative was discussed at the Global Vision for Young

Tibetans Conference 2017 held in Bylakuppe, Karnataka.

Bhuchung Kata was a participant of Global Vision

Conference 2017 who approached us last year with his

book project. Bhuchung’s perseverance and commitment

to the project was not only able to pursue young

Tibetans to submit their writings but was also able to find

a publisher and the book became a reality. ENVISION

financially supported Bhuchung Kata with INR 24,000

to publish his book ‘Unfolded Secrets’ which documents

aspirations, challenges, and hopes of young Tibetans in

exile.

ENVISION also supported Lobsang Yeshi, President of

International Student’s House, Delhi University with

20,000 INR in his fund raising project for the 55th

Annual Cultural Fest ‘Milestone – 2019.’ He was not only

instrumental in organising the entire festival but also

led the Tibetan contingents in one of the events “Many

nations in one house” a platform to engage and interact

with students from different countries, background, and

culture, through cultural performances and exhibitions.

Lobsang Yeshi is an ENVISION beneficiary who had

earlier participated in the National Youth Conference at

Asia Plateau.

Building Bridges ProgrammeENVISION has facilitated various exposure and exchange opportunities to bring together youth from Tibetan and Indian

communities with the objective:

●To foster a better understanding of cultures, learning and sharing

●To expand comfort zones and broaden horizons of young Tibetans

●To nurture friendships between young Indians and Tibetans

School Exchange Programme is designed to bring

together young school children from Tibetan and

Indian communities, to foster a better understanding

of cultures, learning and sharing. It is also an effort

toward facilitating exposure and learning for the Tibetan

children.

This year we have a new School partner in Tibetan

Homes School Rajpur in addition to TCV Selaqui, and

Sambhota Tibetan Society School, Poanta. The Indian

school partners are Guru Nanak Mission Public School

in Paonta, Cambrian Hall and the newly added Olympus

High School both based in Dehradun.

140 Tibetan students and 239 Indian students

participated in the exchange programme. Tibetan

students visited Indian schools in the month of

August and September with the return visits in

October and November. In addition to the ENVISION

facilitated school exchange programme, schools are

discussing further engagements including inter- school

competitions.

One of the highlights of the school exchange programme

is the buddy activity wherein a Tibetan student is paired

day from the school campus and classroom tour to

activities and refreshment. Few students have taken

their friendship forward and are meeting each other

during their school outings. Students also interacted

with each other through participation in skits and

basketball and football matches.

This year we did a questionnaire survey with the

Tibetan Students to have a better understanding of

their experiences and also to seek inputs from them to

make the programme more useful and impactful.

Findings based on the survey conducted with Tibetan students during the programme:

More than half of the students have never interacted with Indian Students before

Through this programme, each Tibetan student on an average interacted with 11 Indian students and made five new friends.

Buddy activity was found most useful and engaging.

across India with the purpose of contributing towards

broadening their horizon and expanding their comfort

zones. This year the 10 students including six girls were

from universities based in Delhi, Baroda, Ooty and

Bangalore.

This conference provides them ample opportunity to

deliberate, exchange, share, strategize and present their

individual and collective voice. Through different exercises,

activities and accomplished speakers from diverse fields, the

conference encourages every individual to find his/her own

unique contribution to the transformation needed in the

world.

collaboration with GTPN Member in the form of Delhi by Bike event. GTPN Members contributed their time to mentor

young Tibetans through GTPN Role Model School Visits and Mission Admission Workshop.

ENVISION’s GTPN Role Model School Visit is an effort to engage Tibetan professionals with the community and harness

their skills to inspire and encourage Tibetan students to explore different career choices and make them aware of

opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in the future.

In the last two years, GTPN members engaged with students of TCV Selaqui, Sambhota Paonta, Tibetan Homes

Foundation and Central School for Tibetans, Mussoorie. Sambhota Paonta School and Rajpur Tibetan Homes school were

the two schools where GTPN Role Models visit took place. Rajpur Tibetan Homes School has joined us this year as a new

School Partner.

Four GTPN members- Ms Ogyen Palmo (Chartered Accountant, Deloitte), Ms Kelsang Tsomo(CEO Third Pole Venture

Link), Mr Kalsang Jigme(Photo Journalist) and Dr Tenzin Namdon (Doctor, Delek Hospital) participated in this visit. They

interacted and attended to 168 students of classes IX, X, and XI of the two schools.

Professionals shared their personal journeys from a student to their current positions as professionals including their

struggles, challenges and opportunities as Tibetans. They also encouraged students to always look at the infinite

possibilities that life has to offer. Following their presentations, students were divided into four groups based on their

interest/career choice to join a professional where lively discussions took place on career options, opportunities,

challenges and struggles.
