Environmental Products of Biotechnology
By Jorge Rodriguez and Success Ndalama
Enviro- Pig
• A genetically modified pig that is special in enzyme in its salivary glands that mixes with food. • giving the pig a special ability to
digest phosphorus in plants so it doesn’t pollute the air
Ethanol
• Ethanol is converted from cellulosic biomass• Cellulase break the cellulosic biomass to
biofuel• Fungi also produce the cellulase
Biodiesel
• Alternative clean fuel made from renewable resources
• Made through the separation from fat or vegetable oil which leaves behind methyl esters which is a name for biodiesel
Composting
• The process of which minerals get broken down further to improve the growth of plants.
• One way of composting is when worms eat the soil and break it down more making the soil richer
Methane Gas
• Methane is about 50% of the price of the products.
• Methane is a colorless and odorless gas. It is also lighter than air.
• It is contributing to Earth’s Global Warming. It is found in landfills.
Biodegradable Products
• Reduces the amount of waste being sent to the landfills.
• Examples: trash bags, cups, cutlery, tableware and containers.
• They break down quickly.
Plastic Products made from Corn
• Plastic cups made from corn break down quickly along with plates, cutlery, tableware and containers
Microbes used for Bioremediation
• Anaerobic respiration. Gives many microbes the ability to exist without oxygen.
• Removes toxic and non- toxic from the environment.
The 5 questions about the products.
• 1. What do people do to enviro-pigs ?• 2. What are biodegradable products? (name
at least two examples.)
