    Introduction

In the last hundred years, we have done

great damage to the environment, and

until the last ten years or so, we havent

cared or thought about theconsequences. Nowadays, a lot of

countries have finally begun to take

    action and consider the environmental

    issues we are facing.

Like the rest of the world, Australia has

its share of the environmental problems. The main problems are deforestation

    and pollution.

    DeforestationDeforestation

Deforestation is cutting, burning anddestroyingtrees andforests

This has become a causeforotherenvironmentalproblems likeclimatechange, airpollution andloss of animals andplantation.

Deforestationhas become a problem, because itreduces the amountofoxygen inthe airforushumans to breathe.

    Itcan alsoleadtothedestructionofnatural

habitats, causing animals andplants to becomeendangeredorextinct

Medicine is found intropicalplants, andAustralia is hometoone millionofthese species

    Here are somecauses fordeforestation:

This graph compares the amount of land clearing to the re-growth of trees in Australia fromthe year 1973 to 2004.

As you can see, the amount of land clearing is much larger than the amount of trees beingre-grown, and so we are losing trees every year. However, the net change is getting smaller

and smaller so we are getting close to re-growing the amount of trees lost in that year.

    AirPollution

Urban and regional air pollutionis a significant environmentalthreat. Industry, power generationand motor vehicles release

pollutants that can lead tophotochemical smog, haze andacidification.

    LandPollution

    Land pollution can be

    caused by poor agricultural

    practices, pesticide use,

    mineral exploitation,industrial discharges and

    indiscriminate disposal of

    urban waste.

    WaterPollution

Poor water quaility and sediment quaility

are the most serious pollution issues

    affecting our coastal and marine

    environments.

In Australia, it has been estimated thatland-based contaminants contribute up to

80% of all marine pollution, and pose amajor threat to the long-term health of

    coastal waterways.

    Conclusion

If we want to hand on our world to

    our children and grandchildren, we

simply cant continue to misuse the

    worlds natural resources and keep

polluting our Earth as we are at themoment. We need to do something

while we still can. All big things are

made of smaller things, so by you

making a small change to help our

world change, things will spread to

    make a big difference.
