Environmental Performance > Mesurable results of an organizaHons´s management of its environment (ISO 14031:2013 – 3.9)
Environmental Performance EvaluaHon > Process to facilitate management decisions regarding an organizaHon´s environmental performance by selecHng indicators, collecHng and analysing data, assessing informaHon about environmental performance, reporHng and communicaHng, and periodically reviewing and improving this process (ISO 14031:2013 – 3.10)

ISO 14031:1999 (first version)
ü ISO 14031:2013 gives guidance on the design and use of environmental performance evaluaCon (EPE) within an organizaCon. It is applicable to all organizaCons, regardless of type, size, locaCon and complexity.
ü ISO 14031:2013 does not establish environmental performance levels.
ü The guidance in ISO 14031:2013 can be used to support an organizaCon's own approach to EPE, including its commitments to compliance with legal and other requirements, the prevenCon of polluCon, and conCnual improvement.

What is ISO 14031 As quoted in its scope statement, ISO 14031, Environmental management – Environmental performance evalua3on – Guidelines is an Interna3onal Standard that gives guidance on the design and use of environmental performance evaluaCon within an organizaCon. It is useable by all organizaCons, regardless of type, size, locaCon and complexity. ISO 14031 does not establish environmental performance levels. It is not intended for use as a specificaCon standard for cerCficaCon/registraCon purposes or for the establishment of any other environmental management system conformance requirements. The standard is intended to be broadly applicable to all organizaCons wishing to evaluate their environmental performance, whether or not they have established environmental management systems. In addiCon, ISO 14031 is wri=en to be applicable to any environmental management system, including those that are not based on ISO 14001. It describes two general categories of indicators to support the implementaCon of EPE :
environmental performance indicators (EPI’s) environmental condiCon indicators (ECI’s)
(Management performance indicators (MPI’s) and operaConal performance indicators (OPI’s) are types of EPI). ISO 14031 also includes supplemental guidance on :
idenCfying the views of interested parCes in the context of PE consideraCons the organizaCon should take into account when selecCng indicators for EPE examples of approaches for selecCng indicators for EPE examples of indicators for EPE.
